PRV's How do Pressure Relief Valves work? Altecnic PRV

  • Today we look at Pressure Relief Valves (or Safety relief valves) otherwise known as PRV 's or SRV 's, all supplied by Altecnic. MASSIVE THAKS! They're a very important component on a sealed or pressursied system. They are used on heating systems and hot water supply systems AND cold water supply systems. So it's time to get your head around them! Thanks to Altecnic for sending me out the cutaways and damaged products, it's not everyday a manufacturer will do that. Their website is below!
We use pressure relief valves to dump pressures of water we deem too high or dangerous. That's why they often leak outside to a safe place (and sometimes not!)

Learning so much from your channel - many thanks. I've just replaced my potable expansion vessel due to the SRV leaking down the tundish but it's still doing it. The pressure in the vessel was ZERO so I replaced it. I now think that it must be the SRV which has failed so I'll be replacing that next. At least I now know that my vessel is working correctly! Many thanks.

I Fully understand what you are saying about not giving the homeowner a way to bypass the pressure vessel but adding a shutoff valve makes sure the job much easier. The homeowner in the end in response if they bypass it and don't call you to fix it. I know one job I did not to long ago and I added a bypass as I always do and for some reason, the tank lost pressure and the homeowner used the bypass as they did not want to call me even though it was a free fix as it was under guarantee. It blew one night they had the heat up high. Costing them nearly 9K in damage they tried to say it was my fault we went to court and it was proven that they caused the damage. For me I still fit them I just wire tie them open so there is no way they can accidentally be closed.

Hello ! I really enjoy watching your videos and I must say thank for many tips you gave me so far ! On this valve subject my super naive question will be .... can I install one pressure relief valve on may main inlet system and set a pressure that will be kept constant on the whole system ? I have an old house with a messy pipe system and I can’t adjust my pressure to a good point so that I have good pressure when I open two taps or just one it’s either too low or too much... that is why I got this idea but I’m not sure the valve can be fitted that way. Thanks in advance

SRV’s can also release pressure due to a failed PRVs aswell I’ve been to jobs before where the customers complaining of water trickling down her gutter then when I’ve gone up to look I traced the pipe back and it was D2 from the tundish. I Checked the vessel and and it wasn’t perforated I used a pressure gauge on the SRV it was showing 4 bar then when I checked the PRV the dial was showing 3 bar so then I knew instantly the PRV was knackered

Love your video's they are brilliant: I've got a system with a pumped water supply coming in at 4 Bar. The PRV is failing every 5 to 6 months and the Pressure release vessel is losing its air fill in the same time frame. Is it possible that the water hammer from the pump is creating dynamic pressure which shortens the life of the PRV? Any ideas on a fix? Thanks in advance !/ Mike

Hi, a quick question. I recently had to drain the boiler to clean the DHW sensor. Did this via closing the boiler isolation valves and then opened the discharge valve as directed. Now it seems that the boiler is losing pressure, possibly through the valve. In the manual it says that the valve seat should be cleaned to ensure it seals. Any advice on what is a valve seat or how to clean it?

Had to keep topping up my system as the PRV was letting out water a lot. Turned off 2 rads and it slowed and at times stopped the boiler PRV letting out the water. Assuming I probably need an expansion vessel. Thin k it started happening since a couple of rads were added to system.
The in built Boiler vessel seems to be working, no water coming out of vent, only air, would it be that its just not a big enough vessel anymore now more rads were added?

Question: My PR valve is situated above the boiler which is on the wall in our kitchen, The outlet pipe (copper) runs down inside the boiler casing then out of the bottom of the casing, extends about a foot below the boiler before exiting through the wall then drops down outside the wall and terminates just above ground level.
My missus wants to put a Kitchen cabinet around the boiler and the pipe sticking out of the bottom of the boiler is in the way.
Can I simply change the exit pipe to run straight out of the wall above the boiler then down?

Beware guys, just because you get water out the Schrader doesn’t mean the vessel is burst. Sounds like this guy is on commission from the vessel manufacturer.

I'd love to know what water out of the shrader means in euan land...?

plumberparts you can get quite a lot of water out of a schrader and it’s just condensation build up, its not always burst.

I guess...but it’s never happened to me. Usually it’s manky water coming out, often under pressure, with a full expansion vessel and a PRV dumping. That’s usually when I think this probably a bust membrane...not a tiny bit of condensation! 😂. So anyway into your other point. Explain to me how I can make ‘commission’ from this video? Because I can’t and I’m not! 😂

Such as? By all means qualify your comment. Otherwise it's just... nonsense.
