super useful video!! I have a question is it best to put a automatic air valve on both the incomming and outgoing side of the radiator system? Or is it ok just to have it on the outgoing side? cheers!
at around 25:43 in the video you show a 'temperature gauge' on the manifold. Do you know the name of that part as I want to get one for my heating system. Thanks
Did you add the new pump, on the flow pipe or return, and does it matter if you add the pump on flow or return feed?
I have been subscribed to you for some time now you have replied to my comments. I ask again that new pump you added is that on the flow or return. Also does it matter if the pump goes on flow or return?
@@mohana.6185 mate, sorry I can't reply to everyone - I'm on my own and have over 100 a day to reply too! Anyway it's on the flow and in this particular situation it doesn't matter which way round it is.
Even with your Dad helping it should not be underestimated how much it takes to film a video while you are up against it to get the job finished and heating up and running by the end of the day. You did great mate keeping your sense of humour throughout.

Seriously, one of the best vids you've done for ages! Real life plumbing is a great learning opportunity for me and its great to watch over your virtual shoulder on a real life problem. Having just done a Baxi Heating controls course it would be great to see more on how the pump was added into the wiring centre, but appreciate why you don't or cannot really show it. Thank you for taking the time to film and put this together. 👏🏻
HaHa, I get that all the time when responding to burst rads or leaking valves on sealed heating systems, “I’ve turned the water off and it’s stopped leaking” customer not realising that the system has just lost pressure and it’s nowt to do with them turning the stop tap off. They’ve been sitting for hours without being able to have a cup of tea or go for a dump for no reason.

Thank you very much for making this video, in an ideal world the system would have been designed properly from the beginning but it looks like they simply added on the annex and upped the pump size to overcome the totally undersized plumbing pipes.
One thing I did notice was the return temperature of the underfloor heating, 50+ degrees c is a bit on the hot side so if a valve failed you'd end up with a 50+ degrees C floor!
Should that not have had a thermostatic mixing valve on it and the radiator moved off the underfloor heating manifold?

You must have saved them a hell of a lot of money trying to push the system up trying to heat a few radiators, well done 👍
I must admit I like low temperature flow systems ideally 50°C & less if all underfloor for sure far less,
I'm not a plumber by trade, although soldering is easy many years as a Aerospace Defence Hardware Test Qualification Verification Consultant been in Electronics industries including boiler analysers repair service & calibration, I must admit planning a system layout is prime importance before installing, that system running 22mm pipe up & down must have lost so much heat especially if it was never lagged, I do feel they will be having a party when their next gas bill is far lower, good video & yes I've purchased parts etc from you guys before great quick service 👍
Before I even see the rest of the video im guessing you could tee from the boiler to the manifold and possibly a small pump on the correct pipe.
Jesus man... I can see how you get a head wrecking with someone else's responsibility to do a job simply and effectively.

One of the best I’ve seen. Would like more info on the relay’s. I take it you can just patch in on the existing pump power feed and or install a pressure activated switch?

Excellent job there, seemed like quickest way to fix without ripping things up. Still can’t get my head around why pipes the pipes were run from the airing cupboard to the annexe 👍

I’m not a boiler engineer, but I am a designer by profession, and even I can see what a bum job this is that you have taken on. Love the banter, and keep up the good work. Me I’ve just fix our 18 year old Grant Oil boiler which popped a leak in the water jacket. I only want it to run for another winter, before we find a competent government certified boiler engineer who can fit a air source heat pump system.

Great video and super workmanship, as always. Damn Robocals always leak. I have 9 of them in my loft (bungalow), cap on every one is now turned tight. Not a single isolating valve. Fortunately not a full drain down to replace them all but so annoying.
James your dad looks very happy working with you i believe you did the best you can to get that system working properly and that's all the matter enjoyed the video.
Great vid. admittedly I have skipped a bit. What I couldn't get was if this has a heat store or a conventional hot water system, which would maybe indicate to why they decided to plumb it in such a way (rightly or worngly). Also for a house and heat load of that size, surely 28mm pipe flow and return from the boiler would have been more appropriate (for the original installation).?

James, have you checked the 4 drainage channels? (assuming it's a factory sunroof). 2 run to back wheel arch and 2 to front wheel arch via A pillar behind the trims. They get gunked up in the arches and water can't get away from the roof 👍

Took a long time, finally starting to see Wilo pumps in my area. usually Grundfos and Taco. Will have to give it a go next boiler change out

Hey buddy, what size is that boiler ? I can see that you have reduced the boilers 28`s to 22`s before the t`s you are cutting in. Would it not have been a bit better to have used 28 t`s, reducing from these ?
I must admit although it can be a pain in the backside, getting a shoddy system to work properly is one of my favourite things in plumbing. The customer thinks you're a magician. It takes time and for you to do what you did, you and your dad must have been motoring. It takes time to figure someone elses work out, and you're even thinking about it in the days before you start the job.

Yes! AAVs with out a valve are a nightmare to change as they never seal like there supposed to.

Nice job, probably would have done it a bit differently (personal style), not a fan of AAVs I prefer it if the air naturally vents to an open vent or radiator, no mechanical part to fail, self sufficient. With that said, sometimes your hands are tied. All in all good job, you just gained another subscriber
I get you! Unfortunately this system is pressurised so you can’t use an open vent and it was a high point in the system 😭😭😭

Does this system have two pumps that are not hydraulically separated?
Closely spaced Tee may also helped allot cheaper than a hydraulic separator.
Thanks mate. Currently it's not hydraulically seperated. Often I do other minor tweaks afterwards so just waiting to see what happens. Can always add a non return valve if needed. Doing a video on the wiring later.
Hi James I'm looking for a good quality fibre washer kit e.g. 15mm 22 mm tap washers also other sizes and also a waste trap washer kit I have look on you store but could not find any only tap cartridge washers could you please point me in the right direction to some good quality ones thanks

I think you should tell them if someone's done a bad job. Maybe in a diplomatic friendly way without slagging off unnecessarily. If it was me, I would want to know who did what to my house and would thank you for the advice. If nothing else it would teach me not to use them anymore and/or to get a second opinion in future. Also, I would want to know why it's not perfect after you worked on it. Without the knowledge that the foundation is flawed, I would be blaming you. You are helping no one by keeping this knowledge to yourself, but maybe that's just me. I guess some clients are willfully ignorant of such things and don't want to know. Guess you have to judge on a case by case basis.
Guess so...but most customers just want it to work and don’t really want to hear you going on about it - which is annoying because they all should care! 😂😂

Mum and Dad installed the all the heating and the plumbing on a renovation self build in the 70s (It only came witha Victorian pump and no mains drainage in rural Essex) so when she moved to a new build in the 90s she has always asked whichever plumber comes in about the long pipe runs and 'returns' on radiators. xD And she would agree with you James as everyone should care about what's gone on in their home. How else do you know what you are dealing with?

There is a screw-fix link for the clips head and back plate
They are called Munson Rings.
What the flux? In the USA we use a tobacco tin of paste flux and flux-up the copper joints before adding solder. How do you flux down-under?
Seal that sunroof with SIKAFLEX mate, its permanently flexible so won't crack under being jiggled about by our fantastic roads.

It’s great stuff. Used it to glue my door seals back on my old (2010) fiesta, worked a treat.
Even though it’s probably not the sunroof to body seal that is leaking, those aftermarket sunroofs always leak and it’s normally the rubber seal losing flexibility against the glass, trying cleaning the edge of the glass and get some gummi flege (rubber rejuvenator) to put on the rubber seal
One of the few gooduns. Just easier, sorry, more profitable, to install a new system and tell the customer it's the only way. Well done for doing an "easy" fix.

Great video and I bet the customer was ecstatic. One question from a non-professional - how do you know that taking off the hot feed early to the manifolds would not "rob" heat from the rest of the system?
Good question. If unbalanced it will rob flow and heat. Thats why balancing is so important!
@@plumberparts But by capping off that original run you have made the system a shorter run and that's why you were able to turn down the pump speed as that big pump did not have so much work to do once you completed the alteration, Jobs a goodon,

I do quite a bit of service and repairs, and I see (and fix) messes like this job fairly often. Video title says this is the worst you've seen. I've seen far, far worse. There are some guys in this part of the world who should NEVER touch this stuff.
