any idea how this kind of music is called? i know it's alternative rock but thats a wayyy too diverse an ambiguos genre, i'm looking for a more specific name
I've never played the games intimately, always watching my older siblings take on the challenges of Silent Hill. One thing of the franchise that has stuck, even stronger than the fog of Silent Hill, is the music. I appreciate all the hard work of the artists to really capture the melodramatic feeling of hopelessness while also trying to break out of their cycles. These songs are simply amazing.
Thats true. Other game that have a memorable soundtrack is Alan Wake. Songs like "The Poet and The Muse" and "War" are really worth hearing, it reminds me a bit of Silent Hill.
Oh, and the three elements composing the Trinity that made Silent Hill a legend among legends in the horror genre are, IMHO, the couple Fog/"Snow" (for real it is ashes), its OST (ambient AND vocal titles), and... the Alarm Siren! This so scary siren, is engraved in the memories of millions of players. I made the initial trilogy, among others pop culture trilogies in videogames and movies, Silent Hill one, the one I made, is probably my favorite one ever, being a big fan of the horror genre.
@@gustavogus692 Oh gosh - totally agreed. Alan Wake and those tracks have shaped a lot of my life and creative ideas (even inspired my first indie game Rainswept)
I'm 18 atm and wish I grew up with silent hill, metal gear, halo, etc. I guess I was just to young at the time to be fair. Idk, I feel like I can always play them now, but I wish I was there with the og console playing it late into the night and having those fond memories till this day. Even if I didnt grow up with it, I can still marvel at the beauty of this OST while slowly feeling more and more hopeless.
I'm 42 right now and I was lucky enough to discover, and enjoy, the initial trilogy day one. But don't despair! Silent Hill 2 remake has just been announced! So, knowing that many say this one episode is the best in the franchise, you'll be able to discover this masterpiece (hoping they won't mess it up; Bloober being the dev studio, I'm kind of confident), with nowadays standards. Somewhere, I envy you.
Depends what you were doing at that time in your life. I'm 23 and grew up with Silent Hill and Resident Evil, both of which some of the best franchises in the genre in my opinion.
Even If You can't turn back time and play the games when more people cared about the SH series, it's cool that You're part of the community that know how to appreciate the OST, the games, the deep haunting and beautilful story, You're awesome! We have to have hope that Silent Hill 2 Remake will make SH games popular again, I think it's underappricieted, the hidden game of horror games and games overall, when graphic wasn't as important as story, gameplay, music etc. There are still good games, but it was just... different, today's world is fucked up and it affects everything, even gaming industry. O.R.T.
I notice one of the tracks I think it was 12:21 (note: not the beginning) background melody is almost similar to sacred line song from Silent Hill: Homecoming. 23:43 I'm guessing is connecting to Silent Hill: Origins. Great vocal compilation; especially the ones I never heard before which due not playing the whole series. Hope one day a video game Silent Hill collection gets made that both long time and new fans can enjoy including Silent Hill: Shatter Memories.
That melody is from the Silent Hill theme from the first game. Listen to it and you'll catch it right away, there are a couple more tracks in the series that reuses that very same melody. It's a juice touch to tie in between the games.

sure, but the songs lose a lotta their impact without appropriate context - they’re all amazing, but when you have both the scene and the song in your mind, it forms a very strong bond that remains beyond either just a song or a scene from a videogame.

it has no specific genre, it goes from pop to rock with electronic and alternative styles in the middle.
Sometimes, is just a grunge from 2000's, or like a pop rock with metal riffs.
