He was Irish and was one of the first irishmen on British TV. It's not that he wasn't appreciated in Ireland but being big in Britain was to have made it. My father loved him and we kids would watch with him because his comedy was clean if irreverent. We were proud of his success.

A father and son went fishing one day. After a couple hours out in the boat, the boy suddenly became curious about the world around him. He asked his father, "How does this boat float?"
The father thought for a moment, then replied, "Don't rightly know, son." The boy returned to his fishing, then turned back to his father, "How do fish breath underwater?" Once again the father replied, "Don't rightly know, son." A little later the boy asked his father, "Why is the sky blue?" Again, the father replied. "Don't rightly know, son."Worried he was going to annoy his father, he says, "Dad, do you mind my asking you all of these questions?" "Of course not son. If you don't ask questions, you'll never learn anything!"

Dave Allen also did another couple, Brian - 1 was about when his son was a teenager and they appear to lose the power of speech . . . I think it was just called "Teenagers"? . . . 2nd one was called, "Airplanes", I think? . . . But, don't forget the comedic writing talents of Victoria Wood and her sketch, "2 Soups"! as well . . . they are all Gold!

I first saw Dave Allen when I was 7? Seems right, but it was when Dave Allen had the show where there was skit comedy interspersed with him sitting in a VERY mid-century chair smoking and drinking what looked like whiskey and telling great stories.
My first stand-up, at such a tender age I had comedic taste.

Dave Allen, Irish, drinking a whisky, smoking, telling it like it is about religion etc, we Brits absolutely loved him!! One of a kind. And I was brought up religious (but Northern Irish protestant aka "son of a preacher man"). Still making me laugh. Try Father Ted next. There may be comedy that rips off protestant/evangelical religion, I just can't think of any, but many of the same jokes equally apply). This sequence isn't about religion, but I highly recommend some of his other content...

Dave Allen's attempt is like that for every parent explaining the world we live in. Very much every parent has tried this clock teaching and its hard to do. Parenting is all about communication and failures happen.

I went to see him live at the Portsmouth Guildhall, UK 42 years ago. He was massive at the time and we were so lucky to get tickets but I had a relative that worked at the box office that sort of swung it for us. The Guildhall only has 2000 seats so we were lucky he even came here in the first place as he was selling out big venues elsewhere. Hilarious man, my parents loved him.

This story is so funny. It brings back anxieties at junior school, I think - might have even been infants' school, we went to, and countless exercise books where you had an ink pad and a rubber stamp of a clock face, that you stamped in the book, and had to draw the hands-on countless times, telling different times.
Then they taught me the 24-hour clock! My head blew off by then, lol!

I recall a newspaper article in the 1970's, at a public swimming pool many children were unable to read their large analogue clock as they were all used to digital watches. A digital clock was put up but that was a 24-hour clock so caused more confusion.
I grew up in Australia and was taught by the Brothers of St Patrick; Dave Allen was on television Friday nights and the brothers rarely missed him.

5:45 I Just love the pauses he gives for us to imagine what the child is saying, probably _'But how do I know if it's 12 in the day or the night?'_
The guy was a genius enough to give the audience enough credit to fill in the blanks...great comedian!
I'm sure you're only 'partially' joking about your anxiousness about bringing children into the world because of this video! But tbh, it's actually a GOOD thing that you are anxious. It's not a small responsibility, but Allen is vastly exaggerating minutia in order highlight the obvious _overall stress_ that parenting can give...you might say that the _stress_ he's portraying is more over years or perhaps months (lol) instead of over the course of one conversation.
And a short temper is CERTAINLY not a good characteristic for a good parent, but you're self aware, so behaviour can be learned pretty quickly when circumstances warrant it. You have a partner who will encourage you. So, much more than likely, you'll be fine.
I think you have no problem with being a great dad...if such a thing has ever existed! And I know you've probably heard it before countless times...but it WILL change your life for the better! Just always remember; changing this nappy (diaper), trying to control this unruly child in this public place, enforcing rules on this teenager... _'This isn't pleasant!'_ ...but over the course, it's enjoyable...and ABOVE ALL, _meaningful._

Dave was a great Irishman he grew up in Dublin, but Ireland was rather repressive back in the day and his humour wasn't appreciated at the time so he went to the UK. But I remember my late father watching him on UK TV channels back in the 80s he would be in convulsions laughing. Ovcourse I was too young to get half of the jokes at the time, and it wasn't until years later and UA-cam came along that I was able to reacquaint myself with his comedy. Now I'm in convulsions laughing and my kids don't get half the jokes.

7:19 It's legitimately difficult to single out any portion of this routine, but this is utter genius. Not sure if it's totally meant this way, but here's my take, for what it's worth!
Dave is pointing out the incontrovertible inconsistency of '1=5', but he's also highlighting nuance and context, not only in 'reading time', but also in life in general! It's a juxtaposition and it's utterly hilarious.
My favoutite part of this set BY FAR.

2:19 I'd go far further and say that children are FAR more likely to question things.
Everything should always be questioned. Children know nothing, so they explicitly HAVE to question, adults 'think' they know everything and rarely question. And I don't set myself apart, we all take things for granted. We can get deep into philosophy, psychology and sociology, but I'll leave it there for now!

Short temper? I thought that too (about myself) until I became a father. It was the other way around. First (with all due respect) your wife cannot 'instruct' you away from who you are. No perceived behavior problem is an 'instruction problem'. What I did"? I, at first bit my tongue (instead of reacting). Looked into my son's eyes and saw his feelings... and realized that he was 'me' thirty years ago. Also, my wife was right in all her instructions. But my wife's instructions were harder to deal with than my son's expressions. Was lucky enough to manage to separate the two, as well as allow myself to be who I am... as a true role model for my son. Lucky? My wife? Me? My son? A combination of everything, as well as a little will, actual will on my part.

  • @carlhartwell7978
    @carlhartwell7978 2 роки тому +1

I think you're spot on about 'learning' from children'. And though I'd be hesitant to totally dismiss an individual child at all times on specific issues, I think I'm actually not going to listen to a 16 yr old on the very complex issue of global warming...for instance, just because _awww, look at that innocent child, muh feels!'_
There's a balance, and I think it lies within mostly learning from the way children are able to question, as well as listening, really listening, to their personal (and this is where nuance is needed the most) un-indoctrinated thoughts on certain subjects.

Teaching and temper and teaching is weird.
I have/had a reputation when I'm driving about temper and what I say in car. I don't speed or drive badly but swear a LOT at those that do. Wife and Son hate it.
I chose to take over my son's driving tuition near completion (as it was taking too long) have him drive to and from school and do practice in supermarket carparks, etc.
Son couldn't believe it. Totally cool. Never a raised voice. Nailed it (second time).
In all things a bad ranty person CAN be a good DAD when you need to be - as IT MATTERS.

The thing that makes no sense about time is that the AM and PM don't rollover at the same time that the numbers do. My logical mind really hates this. The numbers wrap around at 12:59 to 1:00. But AM and PM wrap around at 11:59 to 12:00, an hour earlier.
The AM, PM system is basically operating as if 12 was really 0. Which would make way more sense. 11:59 to 0:00 right when the next half of the day starts.
This messed up system comes from people inventing this clock nomenclature before Europe understood zero, so the 12 is acting like the zero.
I constantly mess up whether noon and midnight are AM or PM because of this illogical system.
