When I create a country, I'll set the time zone to GMT-72. That way, if a country tries to attack us, we know everything they'll do three days before they do it.
No, say we are declared war on on a Friday. For us, it's Tuesday, which means that we have three days advance notice before Friday, when they declare war. If it were Kiribati, we'd have 5 days advance notice. I get what you're saying, and that may have been the case a century ago, but now information can travel at lightning speed; the word would reach us almost instantaneously, while the war wouldn't begin for us until Friday.
Daniel L. Unless the invader says fuck you and attacks anyways, completely disrespecting your time zone.
Sparky_ Jolt Yeah but then there's a massive problem for them: they'll be jumping back in time. It's like Y2k, but for real. All those spreadsheets ruined, all those jet-lagged soldiers, their country is ruined!
Whoa, for a second I thought that it'd actually work. Ehhhhh
Daniel L. Except changing the time arbitrarily doesn't do shit to the actual time. If they decide to go to war with you on Friday, your Tuesday- they'll still invade on Tuesday your time, Friday theirs. Time is dictated by the sun and the moon. It's just humans that arbitrarily think they can control time.

You forgot to write “time zones”
You can add North Korea to the list of "Countries that have their time set on the half hour" with the introduction of Pyongyang Standard Time last year.

As a Samoan I can say you were spot on with the time changes. In 2011, most Samoans celebrated the switch by hosting sci-fi parties and the biggest one was called "Time warp" which was hosted by Bluesky a local Telecom company.

Why are people bitching about his accent? English isn't my first language and I understand him perfectly, I don't see the problem.
I know right, he spoke very clearly in my opinion.

Indeed, should just let time be time. So what if i start at work at 0300 or 0900. And this summertime nonsense. Adjust workhours instead of time. World is quite global now, and its not rare to get into a confusion about time and timezones. If i say lets meet up at 3pm, a person should be able to get that info. Without having to ask where i am, what my timezone is. Then convert into his time. Not rare to get mixups with my internet friends from across the globe.

I would like to know the presenter's area from which his Scottish accent originates, as I've heard similar versions where it sounds like the other speakers are talking through mouthfuls of saliva.

Excellent stuff. I always found the Australian time zones pretty strange. To complicate matters further, I think that some parts of Northern NSW follow Queensland time when Daylight Saving applies in NSW (but not in Queensland).
Lol I'm from Kiribati and didn't realise how complicated time zones were til watching this video lmao
came here _only_ to hear if kiribati was pronounced correctly; narrator does not disappoint
I knew nothing about the pronunciation of Kiribati until I watched this (apparently unlike you) so it appears I may have learnt something else as well. Thank you.
It's "Kiriba*s*," and that's just how the "ti" is pronounced in the Kiribatese language because there is no "s" in their language's alphabet. It isn't all that intuitive to English speakers, but who cares, they don't need to accommodate us.
Also, accents. It's just the way they sound, big deal. We probably sound like morons to people from foreign nations. Calm down, guy.
DarkEye22 It's ironic that someone would use a load of verbal diarrhoea like this to complain about the way something is spelt.
You can neither spell nor punctuate. Until you learn to do both, I suggest you refrain from criticising anyone else's spelling.
Dennis Fluttershy They don't have to throw away centuries of culture just to accommodate our language. There are places in the world with "weird" pronunciation that are older than English itself; why should they care about how lazy people on the Internet who can't be bothered to learn the proper pronunciation?
Besides, there are plenty of places in the UK that have weird pronunciation; should we change them? Should we change all the names in Wales? Ireland? Should we rename Greenwich to Grenich? Reading to Redding? Worcestershire to Woostursher? Leicester? Marylebone? Holborn?
Maybe I sound a little peeved. But culture is so important, and we're already losing a ton of it every day…
I pronounce it Kitty's Back because that's how I say it in my culture of laziness. It's spelled that way just to mess up kids in spelling bees and on Jeopardy.
And I thought time zones were confusing before, holy shit.
Me too. I didn't know there were quarter, half hour, 3 quarters time zones. That's weird, ain't it?
I wanna die
Tse Penny 🗡
They are tank, tame, team zones...
Because of the background music, I just keep imagining these timezones designed by Kerbals.
That would indeed be very kerbal lol
The single timezone at 45 minutes past the hour in Australia is in the locality of Eucla, Western Australia. The reason for the unique timezone has to do with the telegraph station that used to be there. The distance between Perth and Adelaide was too far for a telegraph signal to carry so they built a telegraph station half way between the two. 1 operator would receive the transmission then pass it to the other operator who would re transmit it to the destination. As they were working in between the two cities it didn't make sense to adopt any one timezone so they halved the 90 minute difference and created the UTC +8:45 timezone.
There is no 8:45 timestamp. The length of video is 8:39
Not the single. 5:45 in Nepalm8:45 Eucla 12 r5 chatham

+R.J. Arsenault You had insomnia and needed to get properly zoned out in order to fall asleep.
hahaha
What I learned in this video:
Timezones are just choices made for trading and aren't that complicated. It's like grammer: 90% follows the rule, but the deviant 10% makes it look like an untangleable mess.
The real evil is daylight savings time. (seriously, why does it still exist? It should have been abolished 30 years ago)
There are more hours of daylight during the summer than the winter, but without DST quite a bit of that extra daylight would be early in the morning when most people would be in bed! Basically, Daylight SAVING Time 'saves' some of that daylight for the evening when most people are still going to be awake to make use of it! Basically it's designed to give most people as much daylight as possible in their waking hours - though whether there's necessarily any advantage to that is disputed
Inkyminkyzizwoz yeah, I know, but how is this useful in the globalised age of the light bulb and the computer? It's more of a nuisance than an aid.
PrimaPunchy Well, the idea was that if people get more daylight during their waking hours they won't use as much artificial lighting and therefore it'll save on electricity!
ua-cam.com/video/84aWtseb2-4/v-deo.html
Try this CGP grey video. It has a great amount of arguments against daylight saving time
Idk I live in Texas and I have lived in Arizona, which does not follow daylight savings time.
It wasn't much different not having daylight savings time tbh
I absolutely love this video. Thanks! I also love the Fable-esque background music.
I love your channel!!! I really like the way you present the material and the great map work you do!!! As well as being entertaining, you learn something too! Great channel buddy!! Keep up the great work that you do!
IT ROCKS!!
Accent or no, can we all just take a moment to appreciate that he pronounces "Kiribati" correctly (sounds like "Kiribas")
John Dee
This is the shit I don’t get. If it’s pronounced “Kiribas,” why is t spelled “Kiribati?” That’s the most stupidest shit ever. That’s like instead of America being pronounced Ah-meh-ri-kah, it’s pronounced Ey-ma-ra-ya-ri-ka-me
Hyumanggis Fatsou I don’t know Kiribati phonetics, but I remember the pronunciation by thinking of it as similar to - not the same as - “ti” in English words like “aviation.”
Brooke King
It’s the same with Chuukese. I was speaking with my Chuukese friend last year, she said that “thank you” was “Kirisou.” The spelling is “Kinisou” in Chuukese, but the pronunciation is like “Kirisou.” Makes nonsense at all like wtf.
Well the words queue and comfortable are way more stupid
The Pacific island of Kiritimati... by their pronunciation (and who's to say they're wrong?) is Christmas Island. See it differently, it only takes a minor readjustment of your understanding that we are not all the same.
Go look at all the (to us) weird pronunciations of letters and letter groupings just in the European languages - everything from Finnish to Albanian to Catalan to Hungarian, where they all have their own rules of how it is spelled and spoken. Are they all stupid too?
I'm gonna go play KSP now

But I missed something about time zones at the poles.
it is "keer-i-bas"? i always said "keer-i-bah-te"
umidontno082230
nope, in Gilbertese (their official language) "ti" is pronounced "s", so "keer-i-bas" indeed :)
***** huh, i wonder how many other country names i am pronouncing wrong...
Surely one "day" at the poles is just the length of the year?
Kevin Casey
I don't know, that may be how it works, but that's why I would've liked to hear something about that.
I’ve learnt more from this brilliant dude than I have from GCSE Geography. Keep it up bro, your videos are always fascinating and fun to watch!!
I was born aised raised in Eastern Tennessee (central time), north of Chattanooga, TN (eastern time). It took us 1 hour to drive to Chattanooga - leave at 2pm and arrive at 4pm (setting your clock ahead, obviously). Driving home, leaving at 5pm and one hour later pulling into our driveway at (you guessed it) 5pm. 2 hours to get there, 0 to get home.
This makes me glad to be living in a country with one time zone and nothing too complex in any nearby countries either.
is it Britain
This video taught me that I've been mispronouncing Kiribati for years.
Is it something that comes up a lot in everyday conversation?
Bassam zubedi I guess it's a lot of work finding a topic, doing internet research, writing the script, recording it, finding images, producing the video and uploading it! ;)

What do you mean? One time zone is the best solution. It would greatly simplify online schedules for live streams and planning meetings with people on the other side of the world would be so much easier. What could possibly be a downside to this?
"Morning", "Noon", "Evening" and "Night" would just have different times in different parts of the world and people would universaly understand that "Noon" is that certain hour in this part of the world if you're just planning things localy.
It all works, time zones are idiologcal and will be gone with more and more advancements in communication and the increased simplicity and speed of travel. 12 does not have to be Noon, it's dumb to restrict yourself to that thinking.
Why would you not got rid of them?
Lets all use Beijing time then XDDD
timothy yap I rly dun mind which one. As long as we all manage to agree on one.
TBH you can still do that with the time we have now. Just set your watch (or a watch) at zulu time (GMT). NATO does this to a large extent already when coordinating between different countries.
Taeerom
That's a start, now web streamers need to start anouncing their schedule with that too xD
Maybe some already are, but I've never seen it.
***** The hours are just numbers. You can get used to them no matter what they are.
And the weekdays only really affect what days you work and which you don't.
The days will switch in the middle of the day in some places in the world, that will prbly take some getting used to. But you'd have a universal understanding for the term "5pm on Friday". So when there's an online event at that time, everyone will easily schedule into it.
This will become increasingly important as we globalize more and more. Especially in the not too distance future when it will be possible to travel anywhere in the world within an hour. Then having only 1 global time zone will be even more important.
At the moment the current time zone system does work. You just constantly need to do the math in your head, and keep multiple clocks on your cell phone.
We might just come up with an entirely new ingenious time system that will be more comprehensible on a global scale.
Them weekdays do cause some problems without time zones actually xD
The sun was at its highest point at 12 noon. This is known as HIGH NOON.
Is that an overwatch reference?

In North Dakota, in the USA, a timezone line used to go right through the twin cities of Bismarck and Mandan. They had to move it because at 2AM in Bismarck, when all the bars closed, there would be a mad rush to Mandan by all the bar patrons to get another hour of drinking in. It caused so many accidents.

As if North Korea made any sense anyway.

+Napalm Yeah. The funny thing is, now that South Korea and North Korea have different time zones, North Korean delegates always arrive 30 minutes later than the South Koreans. Both sides hate each other so they just keep using their own time zones.

From 5am-6:59am Eastern Standard Time (N. America between early November and early March), there are 3 different dates observed in the world. That always kinda fascinates me more than it should.
I’m here on behalf of my state of south Australia and I would like to just say daylight saving time is absolutely stupid and we’re all in a constant state of confusion
weirdest time zone in the world: Township Time.
My school has its own time zone.
In EDT, it is 3:00. This is when our school is supposed to end, but it really ends at EDT 3:06, when it is 3:00 Township Time...
This is UTC... -5 hours... 6 minutes?
*****, probably they just have their clocks "turned forward" (always putting attention to YOUR time clock, 'cause that's from where bosses pay employees, even if they're wrong...).
Oh, and EDT is -4 (EST is -5).
We in Puerto Rico, since we don't follow DST, only have to deal with that sort of thing when watching American TV or when figuring when our plane lands or gets off on a trip...
Why don't the time zones in the U.S. just run along the borders of its states? (0:30)
Wouldn't this be a lot easier to handle?
Yes, but people are stupid.
Generally they do, with a few important exceptions. For example the state line between Illinois and Indiana separates Eastern time and Central time but in Gary, IN the time zone swings easterly to keep Gary in Central time so it stays with Chicago's time. This is important because Gary is a bedroom community to the Windy city and things like bus and rail schedules would get screwy if the time zone stayed at the state line. Other examples include western panhandle of Florida, Eastern Oregon (which is actually in Mountain time not pacific) and eastern Tennessee which is Eastern and not Central time.
Justin Poland Ah, that makes sense! So it's the same reason why we switch the clock forward and backwards in the night...to avoid problems with public transport! :)
it would actually cause some more oddities. for example, i live in the western part of michigan's upper peninsula, and ideally, i would live in the utc-6 time zone, but, due to an oddity, i live in utc-5. there are small parts of the upper peninsula that are in utc-6, but making the time zones run along state lines would just fuck up the upper peninsula's time zone even more. i think time zones should be set by longitude alone
Atlanta was changed to EST because of stupid state border. Now Sunrise and dusk are late.
Very interesting!
Why is everybody hating on his accent? When I first found this channel, all of the topics looked really interesting, but when I clicked, I had no idea where the accent was from. He was hard to understand at first, but just watch more of his videos! All these comments about 'tame zones' and 'the laen islands' are unnecessary. You know what he's saying, so just try to enjoy the video. I've watched all of them so many times that I barely notice his accent. It's easy to understand after a while. Just stop being haters and ignore the way he sounds? It's not that hard.
You're absolutely right. They are just simple and close-minded
Omdat hij vreselijk praat
