Derek, I watched this show with my 91 year old dad. Now he has a bit of a memory issue but he perked up and told me story after story about the Model A his family had when he was a kid. Thanks for making his day which in turn made my day.
I'm going to show this video to my 95 year old dad. He had a model A way back when he was young. I've heard many stories already, but the new stories will be worth it.
My mother learned to drive in a model T.. she would be saying you should have a water and fuel jug or 3 for this adventure.. and that if the hill is too steep, turn it around and put it in reverse.. the oil leaking is less conserning then when it stops

This man’s tolerance level is off the charts. All that stopping and filling and packing, and knowing it was leaking like a sieve through every mile, just waiting for it to let go: amazing. I must be getting soft in my old age, because the thank you message toward the end brought a tear to me eye. Rest assured, I will always watch every second of these videos. They’re that good, and so are you and your family.

I know this video is old and the comments are as well. But I watch this video probably once every few months. It’s one of my favorites that Derek has made and to be honest it’s sort of a dream of mine to travel cross country with avoid highways on. I’m glad to see you do this Derek. My grandfather drove from Indiana to Alaska then took a fairy from somewhere in Alaska and landed in Washington then drove across the US back to Indiana. Took about 6 months in total. I flew into Alaska and went fishing with him. That trip was all he talked about until the day he passed. So keep using the back roads!!
Out of all the shows out there, and I’m not just talking UA-cam, I’m talking tv also, Derek has the best one hands down. He’s found a way to connect with so many different people and the reason why is because he’s one of us. Just a regular guy with skills to fix just about anything with an engine. And he’s relatable! There’s more than one time I’ve seen in a video where he’s come across something that I’ve experienced to lol. He’s the real deal, down to earth, and humble. I can watch him with my kids and the worst thing I’ve heard him say is ‘Moses sandals’ lol. When I saw this 90min+ video I knew I was in for a treat! Thank you Derek for taking the time in all that editing and hard work videoing to give us such good entertainment and history to!

In my humble opinion this car deserves a ground up restoration. Making a 700 mile road trip at it's age and condition I think it earned it. Love your content, hope you never stop making it.
She Just Need a mechanical rebuilt and Paint, the car Is actually already in very good conditions and complete, Just an overhaul to give her reliability back, i bet the engine was never been done since the car was new other than maybe some gasket and was still all original to just blow like that😂

Dear Derek and Jessica, I found your VGG channel a few days ago and I'm hooked. I'm 69 and my husband is 93. He watched the '28 Ford Model A episode with me this morning. He had a '30 Ford Model A in the 1940's. He has told me so much about it and said yours is a fancier model than he had. We travel in a 2020 Honda Accord and my Minnie Winnie motorhome. If I could afford to buy him a beauty like yours for him to drive, I would in a heart beat. Yes, he still drives at his age. We take our boat fishing pulled behind his Chevy PU or the Minnie Winnie. I drive most of the time, as I drive well at night and I'm a defensive driver, with zero accidents or tickets. My Daddy taught me well at age 15. Anyway I want you to know how much I enjoy your channel. My oldest vehicle was the 56 Chevy Bel Air I drove all through high school and up to 1979 when my Dad sold it forgetting I would have bought it. Oh well. God bless you and your family. I've been watching your videos for a couple of years and enjoy them all immensely! However this one with the Model A is an absolute treasure! My grandfather had one and use to give me a rides in it . I'm 71 now and to tell you the truth I was getting a little emotional. And for everything you went through to get it back home was phenomenal. But one of things that impressed me the most was how you were almost kid like on enjoying the ride home driving those back roads and your love of our country! So much good can be said about this trip. I'm 87 and it brought back memories of our yearly trips between New Bedford MA. And New York city. Talking during 40s and 50s. Dad had a 1930 Ford 2dr, we lived in NB and family lived in NY city. We got to know every Ho Jo s between. The old girl ran great during 40s, she got kinda tired during 50s. But she never left us by the road side . Keep up the good work you guys are great.

Imagine it's 1935, and you've gotta load the family, the dog, and everything you own in, on, or behind that ol' girl, and drive it all the way from Oklahoma or Kansas to California. My wife's Grandma, 97 and going strong, made that trip at age 11, from Kansas.
When Dirk was telling about these things running on just about anything. It reminded me of a story my dad used to tell about him and his buddy when they were in the Army Air corps during World War II driving from North Dakota to Bakersfield California in a Model A. They put two y's in the intake pipe going to the carburetor with a choke valve and cable assembly on the air cleaner y the Y lead down to a pipe just above the exhaust manifold and back up to the carburetor they had a tank that rested on top of the gas tank where they can reach a valve with a steel tube feeding to a drip nozzle in the top of the pipe that ran past exhaust manifold. Dad said it works best going down a Long Hill. The tank on top of the gas tank held a half-and-half mixture of burner Fuel and kerosene. As the passenger slowly shut the gas off and open the vaporizing oil mixture valve, until it ran smooth but a little rich. Then the driver would regulate the mixture with the choke valve lean for cruising Richer mixture for pulling a Hill. He said it was amazing how far they could get on a tank of fuel.
@B Back during the great depression California was the only place you could earn a living and feed your family, and most of this state isn't how you think it is. The commie part of California is basically from SF down the coast to LA, everywhere else is farmland and people that actually love their country. We just don't outnumber the big cities in population so they get to decide how we live our lives. That's why a lot of us pushed for "The State of Jefferson" a bill that was going to divide California into 3 separate states and make all the liberal folks live in their own state, unfortunately since we lack population numbers it never saw the light of day. You can look it up if you want to though.

You know, this feller really appreciates a feller who can find a rig like this and not only drive it 65,341.9 miles, but be willing to pour more water in the radiator than the Atlantic Ocean. I watch every episode and this one is by far my favorite. And another thing, all us fellers and fellers will be waiting to see this old girl get restored in the fall. To any of us mere mortals, that engine was dead. It took the will and skills of a master like Derek to push it beyond its normal breaking point. I know, I've had my share of sketchy cars where I know very well that you can push a small block chevy on a 1 000 mile road trip with only 8lbs of oil pressure. Just got to keep the revs up at red lights.
@@NomadismeExperimental Heh, same with a Ford 3.8, probably got a couple thousand with the oil light flashing at low idle. Then #5 spun, and I still drove it roughly 25 miles home and shut it off in the driveway. Nothing left of it, biggest part of the bearing shell found was the size of a nickel, thin as foil and robin's egg blue. Think I was lucky enough to partially plug the oil hole in that journal so the rest stayed alive, and a 1984 engine apparently has enough crown clearance that it didn't beat the piston apart or bend the valves.
I love the way this man calls things the funniest names, like “lightning whirler” and “ice cube juice”. I’m never going back to calling them their normal names. Keep on trucking man, we need more people like you turning wrenches in this world.
This may be my FAVORITE episode so far. I loved the comments Derek made about his grandpa and I think Derek actually became a little emotionally attached to this old girl by the time she got him all the way back home. Never had a doubt. In all likelihood, barring any unforseen breakdowns from a car almost 100 year-old, this car could beat a Tesla in a race of a similar distance. A similar race was run between a 1913 Model T and a 2013 Tesla S from Chicago to Long Island ... Tesla Museum ... The Tesla won by 45 minutes but the Model T had to stop and rebuild it's 100 Year old Carburetor along the way
Indeed that 94-year-old car is in pretty good shape. I'm almost the same age as that old Ford and my suspension is worn out, my headlights barely work, all my gaskets are shot, my head is definitely cracked, my exhaust is unreliable most of the time, and my radiator leaks constantly. I normally can't crank before noon on warm days, I can run on anything too, but bourbon keeps me from skipping as much. I don't turn over at all when it's cold. I was red too when I was newer, but I've faded to a light gray with no shine at all, my glass is all fogged and my mechanic said it looked like I am gettin' a Cadillac. He'd also told me I was important years ago....
Hope you’re still reading these comments, Derek. From my Dad (now 84): “What a great video!! Enjoyed it all. It brought back a flood of memories of Dad's 1931 Model A. I can remember Dad having to pull over coming back from Grandma's in Doe Run to add water and reset the timing, Mom having to pour hot water from her tea kettle over the gas lines and settling bowl (ours was a cast iron bowl) to thaw it out in winter. Ours had brown leather seats. Dad or Mom would have to paint the top with "Top coat" to waterproof the top.”

My Grandfather was one of the early Ford Mechanics in Western Pennsylvania back in early 20s. I grew up watching him restore T's and A's and helping his friends restore Model A's and T's. He would get letters and phone calls from across the country asking for his help. People called him Mr. Ford for his knowledge. We'd be at car shows and once people found out who he was, here came the questions and request for help! I thought he must've been some kind of celebrity. Thanks for bringing back those memories.
there is a guy with last name Kaiser over in Glenshaw and I asked him why did you buy those model A's, IDK, I just like them. He's a nice guy and loves these A's in Western PA. He took a pick up and made an slightly extended cab, very subtle, but well done. He made a C cab over based on the Revell model ! Handy guy. He had a truckster which I think was my favorite. Said he bought them as a basket case.
Thanks for another wonderful episode. This one was close to my heart. My father and mother drove a 39 Model A back from Chicago to Berthold North Dakota following his discharge from the Navy as newly weds back in 1944. I still have the car squirreled away in a shed on my farm although it is in rough shape from spending 30 plus years sitting in the trees. I would almost bet my dad and your grampa Allen knew each other back in the day as there farms were only about 15 miles apart. I am still living on the same farm although my dad has been gone for over fifty years. Would love to meet you if you ever have time when you are back in ND. Didn't know your dad but was good friends with Tom Stave. PS saw my farm out the window of the blue Scout as you cruised it past in that episode. I cried more than once watching this old girl drive down the road. Watching you tinker on that car brought back so many memories of my dad and grandpa, and memories of my own time in mechanic school. As far as I'm concerned, this is one of your best videos ever. My two separate thoughts: First, my suggestions about your Model A. Keep it as original as possible. I had a co-worker who restores A's and T's as his hobby. He keeps them stock and they are a beautiful "living history" window to the past--something that young people today need to see more than ever. As to paint, the Model A's, unlike the T's, were available in several colors. My favorites are a dark green and a medium brown--both really handsome. Once you get it rebuilt--don't be afraid to drive it. A friend of mine had a "A" similar to yours. He would frequently drive it to work or to the store. Second, about your trip and your comment about it--more than anything, metropolitan Americans need to get off of the Interstates and actually see rural America. It has been rural America that created most of this country's best people and best leaders. And rural America, the best part of America, still exists, but one has to get off of the Interstates and slow down to see it. Rural Americans still believe in the ideals of freedom, personal responsibility, community, and helping one another that has been lost in most of the cities. I'm thankful that you commented about what you found in rural America. May God bless you and your family.
Love your points about urban Americans. They need to get out and see where their food comes from, and if you drive the “blue highways”, a reference to a book I once read, and the color that used to be used on maps to designate back roads, you will see where your food comes from, where your building materials come from, where your energy really comes from, how it gets to market, and how hard it is to grow food, keep a roof over people’s heads, and keep the lights on. Loved this episode, Derek. My dad, before he passed away, told me a story about the Model A. He was at one time a Model A salesman in Decorah, Iowa. When he moved from Iowa to Colorado, he took his dad (my grandfather) with him in his 1930 Model A. Somewhere in western Iowa my granddad looked at mu dad and said, "Everett, take her up to 60 miles an hour," which my dad did. My granddad had his pocket watch out and watched it for exactly one minute. Granddad then said, "I just wanted to travel a Mile a Minute once in my life Everett, now slow down!" Dad never drove Grandad that fast again...
Testing and engineering back then must have been largely based on faith. I would be hesitant to take something that old and 'untested' to 60mph. Fun story: In the early 90's our family was quite tight on the finances and happened across an early 1980s Toyota Tercel. That thing was a hoot to drive in a period when cars were already well on their way to being much safer and more importantly, bigger in every facet of the car design. This thing was diminutive in size and every manner of operation. I don't think we ever got it to 100KM/h aka 60mph in our time of ownership. It was a very, very white knuckle affair operating that car.

Thank you Derek! You have inspired me to take on my own "Nebraska field for 23 years" dream car, a 1970 Opel Kadett Rallye, on a 432 mile road trip on Tuesday. Avoid Tolls, Avoid Highways. I did spend the last 3 weeks using brake rejuvenation spray, the mouse sucker 9000, the steel wool with the soap in it, and the shine juice. Lets hope the chrome air cleaner will do the trick. @@charlesklass4209 there is one in my fathers neighbour's yard. Was in a barn until a few years ago. They dragged it out and let it sit outside for years. Now they seem to just dumped stuff onto it :( i will never understand why people will do that to a classic car

You have to realize it’s an act of his character. You can tell when things frustrates him by his tone. I’m sure when the camera is off and something happens he cusses like a sailor. Then after he calms down he turns the camera on. He is funny how he acts and talks and that vocabulary anyone who works maintenance has done the same.

This was an excellent episode. When I used to run around down there I really enjoyed the back roads and would take those routes whenever possible from North Dakota to Texas and Florida to California. It's a great way to see the real USA and it's beautiful and friendly. I met some of the nicest people I've ever met out in the less travelled areas. Thanks for the reminder and for reawakening some old memories.
This is one of the best and most entertaining UA-cam video I've seen. The fact that you had a blast while fighting all those battles with an engine that wasn't meant to go that far, seeing all the countryside and towns, and that you never gave up. It made for a spectacular video that was never boring. We all thank you for this ride!
I watched every second. What a journey. Imagine the shade tree/roadside patches that happened to this car during the depression. Looking at the world over top of those headlamps made me think of the moonshine runners. What if it was all dirt roads? I too found myself smiling pretty big. 714 miles. Who else can say they did that?
I'm right with ya. I smiled and chewed off more than one finger nail. I thought if ANYONE can get this ol gal home, its Derek. This was truly a delight.
Those old cars had seen those very roads 50 years before VWs, Toyotas, Hondas and other brands. Those roads weren't fully paved until after WWII. Imagine driving through that mess. Its why they have such road clearance. There was no road maintenance unless someone wanted to take it upon themself and fill in the potholes.
My father passed away a couple years ago, he was in his 80’s. Needless to say he grew up tinkering on Model A’s, doing the same kind of temporary forever fixes Derek used to get home. This trip made me think about him, and miss him. I wish he could have seen Derek’s adventures, he would have loved them. Thanks Derek and keep making memories your kids will cherish.

I imagine that the person who assembled that engine 94 years ago never in their wildest dreams imagined that in the year 2022, an expert mechanic would be fixing it in front of an audience of over a million subscribers. Of course back then the idea of landing on the moon was equally far-fetched.

Yep. I’m at an hour forty minutes in on this, and still watching! It’s that I just gotta see this car make it home. I grew up with a ‘28 Ford A coupe stashed in the back yard. When I was little I used the fenders as slides. Climbed on the top and stepped through the soft top. Stuffed all kinds of vegetation on the gas tank. When I was 16 my dad said “let’s clean her up, get her running, fix the roof and you can drive her to school”. By golly we un-did all the vandalism I had done, put a new battery in her and she stated right up. What an amazing (and forgiving) machine! Thank you for the journey!

That was amazing to watch - just seeing those over-the-hood shots of a nearly century-old car cruising the highways was so gorgeous. And yeah, I very much agree; taking country roads is 100x better than highways because you get to _see_ places and appreciate the drive. I can only imagine how much more gratifying that'd be at the slower pace of a Model A.
The downside is that every little _podunk_ town that's low on funds is just waiting for you to come through at 5mph over their limit! I speak from experience.

That was an epic documentary on the brilliant simplicity and ingenuity of Ford engineering, and your ingenuity and skill in hauling your butt home across 700+ miles in a 94 year old car! Really enjoyed every minute, and I was cheering you on through the whole episode.

Been there, I have a ‘29 Tudor. Everyone waves when I drive it, it’s truly history in real life. I installed a leak-less water pump from Bert’s Model A in Denver, way easier and more reliable. Also, the note with “if you’re still watching?” - dude, of course we are, and thank you back to your family!

Wow, what an epic adventure! Loved, loved, loved it!! I'm an old retired fighter pilot and not sure if I'd had the stones to do this. Probably when I was young and bullet proof. I dare say, a 700mi trip would not have been a cake walk 80 years ago. This simplicity of the design made it rock solid, BUT....700 miles long ago was an adventure then. Congratulations on a job well done. Please keep us in the loop! We don't want this story to end!!
a number of years ago - I had just gotten my " new " '51 FORD Panel back on the road , after a 20 year hiatus . . . . . Needless to say that first voyage out of town was a bit more than the usual , adventure - but ! I was determined to go back home ........ For me , it was an untested ( to me ) engine that had not been ran at all for the past 20 years , and so on .......From Twin Falls , Idaho ---- up over Cabbage hill * Down the other side into Oregon . . . . .With a fully loaded trailer , in tow . . . . In my own defense : I had driven the truck around town for a few miles first . . . But I had also replaced the Worst of the two kingpins ;) That trip usually takes about 10 - 12 hours , depending upon how many sight seeing stops I / WE made ,,...... that time it took a full 24 hours on the road . . . . . I could just go on and on about that adventure , needless to say - I agree with Derek ; it's not about much besides the smiles per mile *
@@Bronco_Billy_Jack_Hills Oh yes, new tyres and a top speed of 40 (barely twice that of a lawn mower), baby cast iron engine barely coughing up maybe 30 horsepower when he set off and likely down to 20 by the end. You can survive leaping out of a car at those speeds as long as your head doesn't hit first, and the Model A barely weighs one ton while modern compacts weigh several hundred kilos more, an el-cheapo base Civic weighs about 1450 and the Model A comes out at around 1020. Since it had a top speed of 65 back in the day when it had horsepower, with its light weight those drum brakes were plenty, as Derek noted when he first set off surprised at how well it stopped. Don't be a fatalist when he plans his route, makes provisions for a lot of things going wrong, and makes sure his route has parts stores along the way just in case something does go more wrong than he was anticipating. The man is smarter than I'll ever be.
I came to see some excitement and watch a feller patch coolant hoses on the side of the highway or something, but I'm 1/3 of the way into this and so far I've learned how Model A ignition, cooling and fuel systems work, the controls, how to set timing, how to start it and how to drive it. This is why I love your channel. The amount of knowledge you impart is incredible. Thank you for what you do!
@@chuckstith838 You practically have to have an expert behind the scenes for something like this. Very few of the modern-ish tricks are going to work on one this old and keep it running so you need a person who can tell you where your good ideas will and won't work.
I did route 66 last year, used a 1939 road atlas and ran as much of the original alignment that I could. Ran a total of 189 miles of interstates in all eight states, I understand very well what you said about running the back roads, meeting folks that live in those small towns, taking your time running 35- 45 MPH. Took me seven weeks to do that journey, it was by far the best trip I have ever done! I am going to retire from truck driving in less then two years and I am going to do the route 66 trip again, this time with a side trip to the Bonneville salt flats for Speedweek. Only this time I am going to do the complete trip in my 1930 Original FORD ROADSTER! Happy motoring buddy! By far your best video yet!👍

When we moved to the country in 1947, Dad had a 1939 Plymouth which he soon traded for a 1929 Model A and a cow. So I know what it's like to ride around in a Model A. The phrase 'zero creature comforts' doesn't go nearly far enough."
@@skgate Ford cars were designed to be cheap and easy to repair. Their simplicity also meant that they were easy to mass produce on a large scale. Before then cars were luxury items. Just four wheels with an engine was good enough for most people. It was better than driving around looking at a horse's butt all day. I still wish they made cars like that now. Just a simple vehicle to get from point a to point b. I know that India tried something like this recently but I don't know about other countries.
VGG is my favorite program to watch overall and Derek is the best mechanic I know. I appreciate how light hearted you stay when a car breaks down on the road because I flip out and I'm trying to learn from you to stay calm in those moments in life. Thanks for being you bud.
So for future reference when a packing leaks on a steam boiler a quick fix we do is take Teflon tape twist er up and roll her around then send the packing nut down. It'll hold 300psi of steam back should work for a ~16psi rad system.

Excellent episode. When I was a teen back in the 70s, a friend of mine and I drove across country and back in his ‘31 Model A pickup. What a blast! I’ll never forget that experience. Those cars in original condition get harder to find every year. It breaks my heart when people cut them up. Peace
You know people dont realize how good they have it when they can just get in their car and go. Back on the day you had to be somewhat mechanically inclined to go somewhere very far in a model a. Heck I grew up as a teen in the 60,s..We all drove 50,s or older cars because they were cheap and easy to fix,,,I always had a trunk full of spare pares and plugs and just about any thing that bolts on ya had a spare one..lol..And a what I use to call the road tool box..Every thing ya need on side of the road..Those were the days..lol
I drive these Cars all the time! I drive a F150 ford truck to work only because we have a large deer population that believes they should run out in front of you most every night! But if I had a choice! Give Me a GREAT model A ford or at least a car that looks like one any day! New Car styles are 😖 AWFUL! My 1925 Dodge Brothers gets me around pretty great, and has since 2003!
This was the first vice grip garage video that I ever saw. I stumbled across it looking for videos about the Model A. Since then I’ve been a fan and member of the show and watch every video. The fact that Derek can get 7.3 million views on a video that’s an hour and 45 minutes long is testament to his show.
That is one of the best videos you have put out in a long time. For an old codger like me that has owned and driven a Model A it was a blast watching you drive it home. Even new this trip would have been a hard trip for a Model A. There were very few roads in 1928 the could have allowed a sustained speed above about 40 MPH. These cars were driven to the feed store and to church probably only a thousand miles per year. Henry Ford would be very proud of his creation and you for making this happen Thank you

I watched every second of this masterpiece with joy and a smile on my face. My face was hurting as you ticked off the miles one by one. What a nostalgic walk back in time. My earliest memory of riding in a car was in my father’s Model A Coupe. He had three A‘ s; one was a Phaeton which I dearly loved. Full disclosure - I actually teared up when you pulled her in the garage. What a video!!! It pulled on my heart strings.

Reminds me of my 31A when I was desperate for a car and my Mom found the car in Washington DC 5 blocks away for $150. I had it apart in one week. No coolent because seller scammed us and block and head were cracked. Dad and I arc welded up all the cracks. The cast iron expanded fast and exploded sending a piece of iron into my forehead! It’s still there from 65 years ago. Many other surprises as kept fixing and made it run. 45 mph top speed but your’s should go faster because the 1928-29 had larger tires. River Side was from Monkey Wards? Have fun with paint and bearings!

My mother learned to drive in a model T.. she would be saying you should have a water and fuel jug or 3 for this adventure.. and that if the hill is too steep, turn it around and put it in reverse.. the oil leaking is less conserning then when it stops

I know this video is old and the comments are as well. But I watch this video probably once every few months. It’s one of my favorites that Derek has made and to be honest it’s sort of a dream of mine to travel cross country with avoid highways on. I’m glad to see you do this Derek. My grandfather drove from Indiana to Alaska then took a fairy from somewhere in Alaska and landed in Washington then drove across the US back to Indiana. Took about 6 months in total. I flew into Alaska and went fishing with him. That trip was all he talked about until the day he passed. So keep using the back roads!!

Out of all the shows out there, and I’m not just talking UA-cam, I’m talking tv also, Derek has the best one hands down. He’s found a way to connect with so many different people and the reason why is because he’s one of us. Just a regular guy with skills to fix just about anything with an engine. And he’s relatable! There’s more than one time I’ve seen in a video where he’s come across something that I’ve experienced to lol. He’s the real deal, down to earth, and humble. I can watch him with my kids and the worst thing I’ve heard him say is ‘Moses sandals’ lol. When I saw this 90min+ video I knew I was in for a treat! Thank you Derek for taking the time in all that editing and hard work videoing to give us such good entertainment and history to!

Dear Derek and Jessica, I found your VGG channel a few days ago and I'm hooked. I'm 69 and my husband is 93. He watched the '28 Ford Model A episode with me this morning. He had a '30 Ford Model A in the 1940's. He has told me so much about it and said yours is a fancier model than he had. We travel in a 2020 Honda Accord and my Minnie Winnie motorhome. If I could afford to buy him a beauty like yours for him to drive, I would in a heart beat. Yes, he still drives at his age. We take our boat fishing pulled behind his Chevy PU or the Minnie Winnie. I drive most of the time, as I drive well at night and I'm a defensive driver, with zero accidents or tickets. My Daddy taught me well at age 15. Anyway I want you to know how much I enjoy your channel. My oldest vehicle was the 56 Chevy Bel Air I drove all through high school and up to 1979 when my Dad sold it forgetting I would have bought it. Oh well. God bless you and your family. I've been watching your videos for a couple of years and enjoy them all immensely! However this one with the Model A is an absolute treasure! My grandfather had one and use to give me a rides in it . I'm 71 now and to tell you the truth I was getting a little emotional. And for everything you went through to get it back home was phenomenal. But one of things that impressed me the most was how you were almost kid like on enjoying the ride home driving those back roads and your love of our country! So much good can be said about this trip. I'm 87 and it brought back memories of our yearly trips between New Bedford MA. And New York city. Talking during 40s and 50s. Dad had a 1930 Ford 2dr, we lived in NB and family lived in NY city. We got to know every Ho Jo s between. The old girl ran great during 40s, she got kinda tired during 50s. But she never left us by the road side . Keep up the good work you guys are great.

Imagine it's 1935, and you've gotta load the family, the dog, and everything you own in, on, or behind that ol' girl, and drive it all the way from Oklahoma or Kansas to California. My wife's Grandma, 97 and going strong, made that trip at age 11, from Kansas.
When Dirk was telling about these things running on just about anything. It reminded me of a story my dad used to tell about him and his buddy when they were in the Army Air corps during World War II driving from North Dakota to Bakersfield California in a Model A. They put two y's in the intake pipe going to the carburetor with a choke valve and cable assembly on the air cleaner y the Y lead down to a pipe just above the exhaust manifold and back up to the carburetor they had a tank that rested on top of the gas tank where they can reach a valve with a steel tube feeding to a drip nozzle in the top of the pipe that ran past exhaust manifold. Dad said it works best going down a Long Hill. The tank on top of the gas tank held a half-and-half mixture of burner Fuel and kerosene. As the passenger slowly shut the gas off and open the vaporizing oil mixture valve, until it ran smooth but a little rich. Then the driver would regulate the mixture with the choke valve lean for cruising Richer mixture for pulling a Hill. He said it was amazing how far they could get on a tank of fuel.
Nice work getting that old girl over 700 miles. Better you than me though, that is way too much tinkering and improvising for my ability.

@B Back during the great depression California was the only place you could earn a living and feed your family, and most of this state isn't how you think it is. The commie part of California is basically from SF down the coast to LA, everywhere else is farmland and people that actually love their country. We just don't outnumber the big cities in population so they get to decide how we live our lives.
That's why a lot of us pushed for "The State of Jefferson" a bill that was going to divide California into 3 separate states and make all the liberal folks live in their own state, unfortunately since we lack population numbers it never saw the light of day. You can look it up if you want to though.

To any of us mere mortals, that engine was dead. It took the will and skills of a master like Derek to push it beyond its normal breaking point. I know, I've had my share of sketchy cars where I know very well that you can push a small block chevy on a 1 000 mile road trip with only 8lbs of oil pressure. Just got to keep the revs up at red lights.

@@NomadismeExperimental Heh, same with a Ford 3.8, probably got a couple thousand with the oil light flashing at low idle. Then #5 spun, and I still drove it roughly 25 miles home and shut it off in the driveway. Nothing left of it, biggest part of the bearing shell found was the size of a nickel, thin as foil and robin's egg blue. Think I was lucky enough to partially plug the oil hole in that journal so the rest stayed alive, and a 1984 engine apparently has enough crown clearance that it didn't beat the piston apart or bend the valves.
I believe you put it back together for the kids that’ll run that thing across country in 50 years. Original as possible

Never had a doubt. In all likelihood, barring any unforseen breakdowns from a car almost 100 year-old, this car could beat a Tesla in a race of a similar distance. A similar race was run between a 1913 Model T and a 2013 Tesla S from Chicago to Long Island ... Tesla Museum ... The Tesla won by 45 minutes but the Model T had to stop and rebuild it's 100 Year old Carburetor along the way

Indeed that 94-year-old car is in pretty good shape. I'm almost the same age as that old Ford and my suspension is worn out, my headlights barely work, all my gaskets are shot, my head is definitely cracked, my exhaust is unreliable most of the time, and my radiator leaks constantly. I normally can't crank before noon on warm days, I can run on anything too, but bourbon keeps me from skipping as much. I don't turn over at all when it's cold. I was red too when I was newer, but I've faded to a light gray with no shine at all, my glass is all fogged and my mechanic said it looked like I am gettin' a Cadillac. He'd also told me I was important years ago....

I can remember Dad having to pull over coming back from Grandma's in Doe Run to add water and reset the timing, Mom having to pour hot water from her tea kettle over the gas lines and settling bowl (ours was a cast iron bowl) to thaw it out in winter. Ours had brown leather seats. Dad or Mom would have to paint the top with "Top coat" to waterproof the top.”

My Grandfather was one of the early Ford Mechanics in Western Pennsylvania back in early 20s. I grew up watching him restore T's and A's and helping his friends restore Model A's and T's. He would get letters and phone calls from across the country asking for his help. People called him Mr. Ford for his knowledge. We'd be at car shows and once people found out who he was, here came the questions and request for help! I thought he must've been some kind of celebrity. Thanks for bringing back those memories.
there is a guy with last name Kaiser over in Glenshaw and I asked him why did you buy those model A's, IDK, I just like them. He's a nice guy and loves these A's in Western PA. He took a pick up and made an slightly extended cab, very subtle, but well done. He made a C cab over based on the Revell model ! Handy guy. He had a truckster which I think was my favorite. Said he bought them as a basket case.
Thanks for another wonderful episode. This one was close to my heart. My father and mother drove a 39 Model A back from Chicago to Berthold North Dakota following his discharge from the Navy as newly weds back in 1944. I still have the car squirreled away in a shed on my farm although it is in rough shape from spending 30 plus years sitting in the trees. I would almost bet my dad and your grampa Allen knew each other back in the day as there farms were only about 15 miles apart. I am still living on the same farm although my dad has been gone for over fifty years. Would love to meet you if you ever have time when you are back in ND. Didn't know your dad but was good friends with Tom Stave. PS saw my farm out the window of the blue Scout as you cruised it past in that episode. As far as I'm concerned, this is one of your best videos ever. My two separate thoughts: First, my suggestions about your Model A. Keep it as original as possible. I had a co-worker who restores A's and T's as his hobby. He keeps them stock and they are a beautiful "living history" window to the past--something that young people today need to see more than ever. As to paint, the Model A's, unlike the T's, were available in several colors. My favorites are a dark green and a medium brown--both really handsome. Once you get it rebuilt--don't be afraid to drive it. A friend of mine had a "A" similar to yours. He would frequently drive it to work or to the store. Second, about your trip and your comment about it--more than anything, metropolitan Americans need to get off of the Interstates and actually see rural America. It has been rural America that created most of this country's best people and best leaders. And rural America, the best part of America, still exists, but one has to get off of the Interstates and slow down to see it. Rural Americans still believe in the ideals of freedom, personal responsibility, community, and helping one another that has been lost in most of the cities. I'm thankful that you commented about what you found in rural America. May God bless you and your family.

Love your points about urban Americans. They need to get out and see where their food comes from, and if you drive the “blue highways”, a reference to a book I once read, and the color that used to be used on maps to designate back roads, you will see where your food comes from, where your building materials come from, where your energy really comes from, how it gets to market, and how hard it is to grow food, keep a roof over people’s heads, and keep the lights on. Loved this episode, Derek. My dad, before he passed away, told me a story about the Model A. He was at one time a Model A salesman in Decorah, Iowa. When he moved from Iowa to Colorado, he took his dad (my grandfather) with him in his 1930 Model A. Somewhere in western Iowa my granddad looked at mu dad and said, "Everett, take her up to 60 miles an hour," which my dad did. My granddad had his pocket watch out and watched it for exactly one minute. Granddad then said, "I just wanted to travel a Mile a Minute once in my life Everett, now slow down!" Dad never drove Grandad that fast again...

Testing and engineering back then must have been largely based on faith. I would be hesitant to take something that old and 'untested' to 60mph.
Fun story: In the early 90's our family was quite tight on the finances and happened across an early 1980s Toyota Tercel. That thing was a hoot to drive in a period when cars were already well on their way to being much safer and more importantly, bigger in every facet of the car design. This thing was diminutive in size and every manner of operation. I don't think we ever got it to 100KM/h aka 60mph in our time of ownership. It was a very, very white knuckle affair operating that car.

Thank you Derek! You have inspired me to take on my own "Nebraska field for 23 years" dream car, a 1970 Opel Kadett Rallye, on a 432 mile road trip on Tuesday. Avoid Tolls, Avoid Highways. I did spend the last 3 weeks using brake rejuvenation spray, the mouse sucker 9000, the steel wool with the soap in it, and the shine juice. Lets hope the chrome air cleaner will do the trick. You have to realize it’s an act of his character. You can tell when things frustrates him by his tone. I’m sure when the camera is off and something happens he cusses like a sailor. Then after he calms down he turns the camera on. He is funny how he acts and talks and that vocabulary anyone who works maintenance has done the same.

This was an excellent episode. When I used to run around down there I really enjoyed the back roads and would take those routes whenever possible from North Dakota to Texas and Florida to California. It's a great way to see the real USA and it's beautiful and friendly. I met some of the nicest people I've ever met out in the less travelled areas. Thanks for the reminder and for reawakening some old memories.
This is one of the best and most entertaining UA-cam video I've seen. The fact that you had a blast while fighting all those battles with an engine that wasn't meant to go that far, seeing all the countryside and towns, and that you never gave up. It made for a spectacular video that was never boring. We all thank you for this ride!
I watched every second. What a journey. Imagine the shade tree/roadside patches that happened to this car during the depression. Looking at the world over top of those headlamps made me think of the moonshine runners. What if it was all dirt roads? I too found myself smiling pretty big. 714 miles. Who else can say they did that?
I'm right with ya. I smiled and chewed off more than one finger nail. I thought if ANYONE can get this ol gal home, its Derek. This was truly a delight.
Those old cars had seen those very roads 50 years before VWs, Toyotas, Hondas and other brands. Those roads weren't fully paved until after WWII. Imagine driving through that mess. Its why they have such road clearance. There was no road maintenance unless someone wanted to take it upon themself and fill in the potholes.
Why would you watch every second there's always a well fellers and fellets moments.

My father passed away a couple years ago, he was in his 80’s. Needless to say he grew up tinkering on Model A’s, doing the same kind of temporary forever fixes Derek used to get home. This trip made me think about him, and miss him. I wish he could have seen Derek’s adventures, he would have loved them.

I imagine that the person who assembled that engine 94 years ago never in their wildest dreams imagined that in the year 2022, an expert mechanic would be fixing it in front of an audience of over a million subscribers. Of course back then the idea of landing on the moon was equally far-fetched.

Yep. I’m at an hour forty minutes in on this, and still watching! It’s that I just gotta see this car make it home. I grew up with a ‘28 Ford A coupe stashed in the back yard. When I was little I used the fenders as slides. Climbed on the top and stepped through the soft top. Stuffed all kinds of vegetation on the gas tank. When I was 16 my dad said “let’s clean her up, get her running, fix the roof and you can drive her to school”. By golly we un-did all the vandalism I had done, put a new battery in her and she stated right up. What an amazing (and forgiving) machine! Thank you for the journey!

That was amazing to watch - just seeing those over-the-hood shots of a nearly century-old car cruising the highways was so gorgeous. And yeah, I very much agree; taking country roads is 100x better than highways because you get to _see_ places and appreciate the drive. I can only imagine how much more gratifying that'd be at the slower pace of a Model A.
The downside is that every little _podunk_ town that's low on funds is just waiting for you to come through at 5mph over their limit! I speak from experience.

Wife and I did this on a road trip from Oklahoma to Mississippi. Lot of fun and maybe added only two hours to a ten hour road trip.

Been there, I have a ‘29 Tudor. Everyone waves when I drive it, it’s truly history in real life. I installed a leak-less water pump from Bert’s Model A in Denver, way easier and more reliable.

Wow, what an epic adventure! Loved, loved, loved it!! I'm an old retired fighter pilot and not sure if I'd had the stones to do this. Probably when I was young and bullet proof. I dare say, a 700mi trip would not have been a cake walk 80 years ago. This simplicity of the design made it rock solid, BUT....700 miles long ago was an adventure then. Congratulations on a job well done. Please keep us in the loop! We don't want this story to end!!
a number of years ago - I had just gotten my " new " '51 FORD Panel back on the road , after a 20 year hiatus . . . . . Needless to say that first voyage out of town was a bit
more than the usual , adventure - but ! I was determined to go back home ........
For me , it was an untested ( to me ) engine that had not been ran at all for the past 20 years , and so on .......From Twin Falls , Idaho ---- up over Cabbage hill * Down the other side into Oregon . . . . .With a fully loaded trailer , in tow . . . .
In my own defense : I had driven the truck around town for a few miles first . . . But I had also replaced the Worst of the two kingpins ;)
That trip usually takes about 10 - 12 hours , depending upon how many sight seeing stops I / WE made ,,...... that time it took a full 24 hours on the road . . . . . I could just go on and on about that adventure , needless to say - I agree with Derek ; it's not about

@@Bronco_Billy_Jack_Hills Oh yes, new tyres and a top speed of 40 (barely twice that of a lawn mower), baby cast iron engine barely coughing up maybe 30 horsepower when he set off and likely down to 20 by the end. You can survive leaping out of a car at those speeds as long as your head doesn't hit first, and the Model A barely weighs one ton while modern compacts weigh several hundred kilos more, an el-cheapo base Civic weighs about 1450 and the Model A comes out at around 1020. Since it had a top speed of 65 back in the day when it had horsepower, with its light weight those drum brakes were plenty, as Derek noted when he first set off surprised at how well it stopped. Don't be a fatalist when he plans his route, makes provisions for a lot of things going wrong, and makes sure his route has parts stores along the way just in case something does go more wrong than he was anticipating. The man is smarter than I'll ever be.

I came to see some excitement and watch a feller patch coolant hoses on the side of the highway or something, but I'm 1/3 of the way into this and so far I've learned how Model A ignition, cooling and fuel systems work, the controls, how to set timing, how to start it and how to drive it. This is why I love your channel. The amount of knowledge you impart is incredible. Thank you for what you do!

@@chuckstith838 You practically have to have an expert behind the scenes for something like this. Very few of the modern-ish tricks are going to work on one this old and keep it running so you need a person who can tell you where your good ideas will and won't work.
I did route 66 last year, used a 1939 road atlas and ran as much of the original alignment that I could. Ran a total of 189 miles of interstates in all eight states, I understand very well what you said about running the back roads, meeting folks that live in those small towns, taking your time running 35- 45 MPH. Took me seven weeks to do that journey, it was by far the best trip I have ever done! I am going to retire from truck driving in less then two years and I am going to do the route 66 trip again, this time with a side trip to the Bonneville salt flats for Speedweek. Only this time I am going to do the complete trip in my 1930 Original FORD ROADSTER! Happy motoring buddy! By far your best video yet!👍

When we moved to the country in 1947, Dad had a 1939 Plymouth which he soon traded for a 1929 Model A and a cow. So I know what it's like to ride around in a Model A. The phrase 'zero creature comforts' doesn't go nearly far enough."

@@skgate Ford cars were designed to be cheap and easy to repair. Their simplicity also meant that they were easy to mass produce on a large scale. Before then cars were luxury items.
Just four wheels with an engine was good enough for most people. It was better than driving around looking at a horse's butt all day.
I still wish they made cars like that now. Just a simple vehicle to get from point a to point b. I know that India tried something like this recently but I don't know about other countries.

So for future reference when a packing leaks on a steam boiler a quick fix we do is take Teflon tape twist er up and roll her around then send the packing nut down. It'll hold 300psi of steam back should work for a ~16psi rad system.

Excellent episode. When I was a teen back in the 70s, a friend of mine and I drove across country and back in his ‘31 Model A pickup. What a blast! I’ll never forget that experience. Those cars in original condition get harder to find every year. It breaks my heart when people cut them up. Peace
You know people dont realize how good they have it when they can just get in their car and go. Back on the day you had to be somewhat mechanically inclined to go somewhere very far in a model a. Heck I grew up as a teen in the 60,s..We all drove 50,s or older cars because they were cheap and easy to fix,,,I always had a trunk full of spare pares and plugs and just about any thing that bolts on ya had a spare one..lol..And a what I use to call the road tool box..Every thing ya need on side of the road..Those were the days..lol
Hell, most people couldn't even cold start something with a carburetor on it now. Even less if the choke doesn't work properly or at all
I drive these Cars all the time! I drive a F150 ford truck to work only because we have a large deer population that believes they should run out in front of you most every night! But if I had a choice! Give Me a GREAT model A ford or at least a car that looks like one any day! New Car styles are 😖 AWFUL! My 1925 Dodge Brothers gets me around pretty great, and has since 2003!
This was the first vice grip garage video that I ever saw. I stumbled across it looking for videos about the Model A. Since then I’ve been a fan and member of the show and watch every video. The fact that Derek can get 7.3 million views on a video that’s an hour and 45 minutes long is testament to his show.
That is one of the best videos you have put out in a long time. For an old codger like me that has owned and driven a Model A it was a blast watching you drive it home. Even new this trip would have been a hard trip for a Model A. There were very few roads in 1928 the could have allowed a sustained speed above about 40 MPH. These cars were driven to the feed store and to church probably only a thousand miles per year. Henry Ford would be very proud of his creation and you for making this happen Thank you
MAN. I just recently “discovered” this channel, and have been binge-watching ever since. When I can’t actually watch the videos I’ll play the audio like a podcast (long commute to work) and I actually giggle my ass off. I watched every second of this masterpiece with joy and a smile on my face. My face was hurting as you ticked off the miles one by one. What a nostalgic walk back in time. My earliest memory of riding in a car was in my father’s Model A Coupe. He had three A‘ s; one was a Phaeton which I dearly loved.

I’m doing a inspired thing by buying a camper for $300 with bad tires that has not run in eight years and if I get it start it fingers crossed I’m going to drive it to my house from 87 miles away but bad tires and probably bad carburetor

Reminds me of my 31A when I was desperate for a car and my Mom found the car in Washington DC 5 blocks away for $150. I had it apart in one week. No coolent because seller scammed us and block and head were cracked. Dad and I arc welded up all the cracks. The cast iron expanded fast and exploded sending a piece of iron into my forehead! It’s still there from 65 years ago. Many other surprises as kept fixing and made it run. 45 mph top speed but your’s should go faster because the 1928-29 had larger tires. River Side was from Monkey Wards? Have fun with paint and bearings!
