My Enve 3.4's had the same type of lateral play in them....I'd have to fully open up my brake tracks so they wouldn't rub anytime I'd stand up and pedal. I ended up getting them rebuilt (by Enve) with DT Competition spokes, which alleviated the problem and really stiffened up the wheels.

I recently bought the ARX 41 DB version and have not experienced any of the flex. The DB version is a little wider so I don’t know if that makes any difference. Hey Jeff, good to hear you're not having flex problems. The guy I know who has a set of the disc version doesn't have any problems either. There's a little bit of flex but the frame clearance, and I suspect the different lacing pattern, keeps it fairly small.

There's 3 phases to wet braking on carbon: pull the brakes hard and notice nothing is happening, slowly the water clears off the brake track while you poop your pants, you eventually start slowing down. So at that point you're left with whatever braking performance the wheels have. The best carbon braking I've had to-date is Bikebeat Uberfliegers. That review vid is next on my to-do list!

    • @JustRideAdelaide
      @JustRideAdelaide  4 роки тому

@@charlesgraham-dixon2637 Hey Charles, yes the disc version has some flex still. I know a guy with a set on a Canyon Ultimate and I did the same thing where I pinched the rim and flexed it. There was less than the rim brake version, and disc brake frames tend to have much better clearance for the rim/tyre to move and not touch anything. He had never noticed it on his bike because it didn't rub. As for whether it's normal, it is common for stiff carbon rims. The set in this video flexes more than any other I've seen. I'd expect the set on the Canyon you're looking at to be fine, based on the friend of mine's experience and the fact he's probably 10kg heavier than you.

Hey mate, that's lucky that they warrantied your set! Ok, so hubs is an interesting question. Here's some possibilities, but I' definitely recommend doing some more research to see if they have a nice wide flange width. Something like White Industries T11, perhaps even Shimano Dura Ace hubs, and I do know a local wheel builder who uses Bitex branded hubs because they're great value for money. Then you've got something like a DTSwiss 350 that's a good workhorse, or the new Enve Alloy hub. I'd recommend talking to a wheel builder about the problems with the Reynolds to see what they recommend. Good luck!

@@JustRideAdelaide Thanks James, you said exactly the route and hubs I have been thinking of. Reynolds seems to have got "cheap" on the hubs for a few years. A well known bike shop that builds wheels told me that Reynolds would make deals with big websites like Mybikeshop (dot com) and equip the wheels with cheaper "in-house Reynolds" hubs instead of normal DT Swiss internals, so they could blow them out at $999 online. I bit on the Strike deal in 2017:/ I will probably go with the DT350's as some work horse training wheels. There seems to be less flex in the disc brake version. But there's still some flex. Disc brakes solve one problem but having the brake caliper closer to the centre of the wheel so the wheel flex won't affect the brake. The question after that is frame clearance, and whether it's enough to allow for the small flex in the wheel without having the tyre rub on the frame.

I recently purchased some AR41x (manufactured date was September 2020) despite this review. In fact, I think the review is a bit misleading and perhaps a bit unfair given that people with the disc brake version seem to have no issues. Also, I did the same flex test as the reviewer with my previous rims WTB aluminum rims and got a fair amount of flex with those. I have disc brakes and a Cannondale Synapse Aluminum 2019 frame. With my setup and I suspect with any disc brake bike/frame, these wheels would work great. I have a 135mm QR on the rear and everything seems to work just fine. Note that the wheels do not come with the QR end caps so you will need to buy them separately from Reynolds/Hayes ($30 USD w/tax) and they do not appear on the website site so contact their customer support and they will give you the correct part number to search up and order. Reynolds Allroads Disc Hub End Caps - 2017+
Rear - QR. Sorry, i forgot the actual part number and you need that to search. The wheels did come with end caps for 12mm front thru axle and 12mm and 15mm rear thru axles just not the QR. I am running them with tubes and Continental GP5000's. My feels ALOT more snappy with this upgraded wheel set. I think they look awesome too because they are matte black and the branding is very subtle. I like them and the people at Reynolds/Hayes were super to work with.

Other wheels without weight limit are:

My DTSwiss rear hub is 53mm, my Elite (Chinese magnetic pawls) rear hub is 53.4mm, generic Chinese hubs I have laying around are 54mm. I'm not sure the 3mm difference (if you measured correctly) would induce such a flex. All wheels flex, carbon and aluminium, especially those with 24 or 20 spokes at the back wheel. I think the issue with the excessive flexing on these wheels must be elsewhere, rim design, nipple attachement to the rim.
Lastly seeing external nipples in this day and age on "aero" wheels should already be a big no no.

Strange but intheknowcycling said the AR41 "is a stiff wheelset, seemingly stiffer than the Assault" and the braking was poor, the exact opposite to your review. However, Cycling Weekly agrees with you. "A small notch in the Reynolds’ performance was stiffness around the hub area. Big out-of-the-saddle efforts forced some brake rub, especially at the front, which I haven’t felt on other wheels used in the same bike". There's no doubt the two wheelsets you tested displayed huge lateral movement. What has been Reynolds' response?

Did you notice in the video that his hand covers up the whole rear hub while showing it against the brake. I don't see any of the Reynolds logos through out the whole video. If your going to trash a wheel & the company you better back it up by showing more, dont you think. Please really pay attention to the video and look for any Reynolds showing while he demonstrating.

There are Reynolds logos through the whole video when the bike is static for every product shot. There are logos very clearly on both the rim and hub. But you're implying that I'm reviewing some non-Reynolds wheel in order to...what exactly? Smear Reynolds? And your evidence is the hub logo isn't visible when I flex the wheel? Why?

@@JustRideAdelaide The only shots you show are the wheels braced together and the wheels on the bike stationary. Why is your hand covering the complete hub shot twice while your showing the how much flex against the brake. Why not show the hub while your doing it to prove that those are the wheels your claiming are that bad. Slow your video down to prove that your riding those exact wheel. Yes, I think your slamming Reynolds wheels. I've forwarded your video to a friend of mine who's the rep for Reynolds in the USA. If you google the reviews on these wheels both of the bad reviews are from you & another company in Australia. Maybe theres a reason why your getting shipped the shitty ones..🤣🤣

@@jimvolkenant7272 Jim I can't "prove" anything if you start from such an absurd accusation and set a ridiculous burden of "proof". You've already decided I'm wrong based on not being able to see a logo in a few seconds of the video.
These wheels came from the Australian Reynolds distributor. People working for the distributor have checked them. I dealt directly with their brand rep. I did this exact demonstration to an independent wheel builder. Other people have ridden the exact Time bike, with Reynolds wheels, you see in this video and reported them flexy. Reynolds themselves are plenty aware of this video. They can easily get back both exact sets that I used if they want. They have all of the serial numbers on them. Other owners who bought them have confirmed theirs flex too, repeatedly.

Although I love the logic in your reasoning, my friend is a rep therefore you are wrong, I actually had the exact same experience as James on these wheels. The flex was so noticeable that I had to change out these wheels for a local hill climb as the rubbing was so bad. Looking forward to your video explaining that there is no issue with them and everyone who has reviewed the wheels is wrong.

Dumb review. All rim brake wheels flex. Tighten up your ti-skewers as tight as possible. Reynolds hubs are made by Taiwanese KT industry. They are stiff and reliable

Did you watch the review? I said the rim stiffness overcomes the low spoke tension which is made more vulnerable to flex by the narrow hub flange width. Obviously the hub itself doesn't flex, and tightening the skewer fixes nothing.

Yes. Indeed, I did. My words came out strong.. Having said that, don’t wish to offend you or your channel. However, been a good UA-camr and global citizen, please put out the “correct” information to educate new riders and the average consumers. And of course you are entitled to have your opinion. But, state that it is your opinion only, instead of acting like a pro bike/wheels engineer. Now, I have carbon-ti hubs and the older zipp hubs. They are 2x laced on the drive-side and 1x laced on the none-drive-side. Then it does require the longer flange-to- center (width) design. The typical 2x n’ 2x radial laced wheels allowed the manufacturers to design narrower hubs and higher flange. I used from ENVE 5.6, HED carbon tubulars, custom build zipp 808 FC and 108 tubulars, Zipp 404 NSW TL, Roval 50 TL and the Reynolds AR 41x. All these rim brake wheels (except AR41X) uses Sapim CX-Ray and they all flex. Some hubs even have complex pre-load adjustor which have both flexes and a bit of play. Is it a bad thing? No, it’s just engineering... it allows some flex on the wheelset to accommodate super stiff frameset, heavy loads, the Alaps and crit sprints.

@@G5performance I stand by my information. I based it on the analysis of a wheel builder with 30 years experience who assessed this exact set of wheels and diagnosed the problem as I communicated it.
