Google signs deal to build seven nuclear reactors to satisfy AI energy hunger | DW News

- The AI revolution is reshaping our world at breakneck speed. The possibilities seem endless but are actually being limited by one very important thing: electricity. Asking ChatGPT a question uses 30 times more power than a regular search query on Google. If everyone on the planet let AI into their lives, that would require too much for power grids to handle. So tech companies are going nuclear.

So AI goes nuclear 😅
@@sebastiaanl9876 google is building 7 nuclear towers.. in the news today

yeah, lets give AI its own loong term energy source... what could go wrong
The biggest joke when ai never gets better than chatgpt
hahaha. Good luck to all of us 😂😂
You guys sound as if you haven’t watched the video or it was too complex
Meanwhile, how are German tech companies preparing for AI?
Oh right, there are no tech companies and there is no power.
They are building solar panels to harness the famous German sun! :D
Far right - off topic by nature.

BIG COMPANIES HAVE WAY WAY TOO MUCH POWER.
And that's a good thing - governments have no incentive to improve our electricity grid.
well, it's nuclear power plant, of course it produces way much more power than any other energy source.........
because it does.
if the government had all the power hardly anything would get done
Name me one single private company which have started a War. Companies are into one thing only, money. They don't care about power or conquering. They only want to give you solutions for you daily basics so you would give him money. That's it.
So instead of using energy to for life essential tasks, they are gonna use it so their custom support bots can hallucinate
exactly hrhr and riddle me this
Who will carry the costs for the nuclear waste storage facilities later on?
or the costs for controlling these sites and the power plants, as i hope there will still be government oversight, right?
The line is more important than health and happiness, unfortunately. Line must always go up
i think USA produces enough energy for both life essential tasks and custom support bots
Let's hope the tech lords will gladly live with their families right next to one of their nuclear plants...
Just to clarify, will google take care of the nuclear waste produced due to these 7 nuclear reactors or is it implied that the public has to carry the costs for that?
seems you never heard of "privatize profits and socialize risks"
@@Jackieception Well you assume wrong.
Soooo it's been decided by AI that it's in the best interest of AI to go nuclear. Well that didn't take long.
Like it👍🏴
In all the years of watching the news, I've not seen any presenter ask a more appropriate question than this man in this interview. Well done. I wish I could see more of him on TV
Next are human batteries
After we burn the sky to try to stop it.
Pound-for-pound, humans make lousy batteries. About one-half watt of heat energy per pound for an average U.S. adult male, whereas one pound of plutonium-238 produces about 250 watts of heat energy from radioactive decay -- a 500x improvement. Realistically, just operating the machinery to keep the human population fed would make _The Matrix_ power plant a net energy _consumer._ Goodbye machine city.
Those machines could have just built a big reactor and dispensed with the human race altogether.
Best comment
"You are begining to beleive".. The matrix has you......🥲
@BanterMaestro2-y9z the original story was that they used humans as CPUs rather than batteries. The studio changed the story to batteries because supposedly it was easier for audiences to understand
So Germany is out of the AI-game due to its rejection of all things nuclear.
huh? Google isn't even a German company
Germany was never in the AI game, with or without nuclear energy.
I can understand the "need" for AI. We've exhausted the possibilities of real intelligence🤣🤣🤣/s

DW News: Google signs deal to build seven nuclear reactors to satisfy AI energy hunger.
Me: What is the name of this A.I.? Skynet?!?
“Site of the worst nuclear accident in American history.”
*that resulted in no deaths and no injuries
Not even Later ?
I mean with Cancer ? 😅
The first statement is why the second is a lie.
@@MrLoobu It's true, no one died because proper safety procedures were followed when one of the 2 reactors on site malfunctioned. That reactor is now encased in 30ft thick concrete. Microsoft is rebuilding and reactivating the one that didn't meltdown. It's a great solution instead of using public utility energy.
@@johnnydoe3603 yes. literally nothing. Kyle Hill here on YT did a video that broke down the math and over time, the likelihood that it had ANY effect on a person's health is like 0.1% or something ridiculously small iirc. The video is like a year or two old, would recommend. Very insightful (as are all of his videos in the nuclear disaster series)
At least he didn't call it a "disaster", as other journalists have done.
I initially thought this was AI misinformation …
So what’s next…hospitals, steel works, cruise ships?
it might still be, honestly
I had to double check it's a real news channel because I was thinking I'm watching the Onion.😂
She does not make the distinction between training and inference explicitly. Inference is expensive since it requires larger amounts of computation to provide output from a model with 175 billion parameters.
Training or fine-tuning requires much much much more computational resource and energy (which is what this woman talks about).
small clarification from a MSc AI student at UvA
You guys are crazy with this Ai we don’t want it
Who is we ?
Speak for yourself please.
Slower and more regulated yes and maybe with solar energy and gravity batteries, but not at all seems an extrem position to take.
Give it the launch codes, and maybe it could fix our real problem.
Oh great, just put nuclear power in the hands of AI and we should be fine
I thought from the thumbnail that Google was just really really mad. XD
they probably are as well
Im from Pennsylvania and this is the first im hearing of this 😢. I dont think i like the idea
Do we actually need AI? Aren't humans cheaper and more efficient than replicating it through AI? I don't get why the top tech companies are not investing more on people or creating more tools to enhance humanity because at this point they just want to replace humans even if that costs 7 nuclear reactors for one human like model 😅
tech bro insanity
Conpanies will do anything for maximum profit. This includes replacing humans for automatic working. Once done there won't be a reason to pay humans in the long term. So it's way cheaper when everything is autonomous and no humans are involved.
Madness.
Google AI- nuclear,- skynet,- judgement day,- T800.💀
The most expensive way to boil water in the history of the world.
Not necessarily. Nuclear was the cheapest option in the 60s. It is expensive because of the bureaucracy. If you use newer high temperature reactors you could switch to brayton cycle
efficient*
and cheapest, when you take ammount of energy produced into account :)
Humans need clean cheap energy, not A.I. This madness should stop.
Good thing nuclear is exactly that (once they're built).
nuclear energy is amazing
The problem with nuclear is the waste the amount of power you get though offsets this and we are finally building storage in the east coast for long term nuclear waste to be stored safely for centuries
Well, let them build, it'll soften regulation for people.
The problem is, even if you do not do it, someone else will do it.
This will only last until shareholders realize that you cannot capitalize on these machine learning platforms. Sure, right now it would cost Google more to not invest in this, even though Google have publicly admitted that there are no money to be made..
This. AI is a meme and has only made trillions of loses so far. And they already ran out of energy and data to feed it. ChatGPT is the best it will get for this generation of AI, which is not really that good at all.
@@davidwalz94chatgpt is really good for learning calculus it seems
Has anyone talked about how profitable AI is?
I mean OpenAI has been losing $5 Billion a year, and it currently costs them something like $2.30 to make $1 of revenue.
So where is the profit to make sure this is all sustainable?
And don't talk about other loss making companies that made profits eventually, every customer costs more to service as there are no economies of scale in running more and more processing to service customers.
And then there is the projected costs of training more sophisticated models.........
AI is a bubble, and if it pops it could take most of the IT industry with it......
good TBH
In exchange for lost money, they get all the info that anyone has put in chatgpt by writing. That has a lot of value as well. Company data about most companies in the world because employees want chatgpt to to their work for them
in the sense that it doesn't need to provide any value while costing enormous amounts of money for people to fanboy it like crazy, ai is just like nuclear
I guess it's the same strategy as for all tech: subsidize until you outlast the conpetition to establish a monopoly
Uber, AirBnB, GrubHub, Amazon, Tesla, Spotify - most of these companies did not return a profit for years and some still don't, as long as you remain the one company that pulls through you'll monopolize all of the income generated by that market sector
Exactly....Theil's Blue Ocean writ large
I remember when crypto and Web3 were trending, people were worried about electricity consumption. But now that AI is the trend, and there are no complaints? Corporations never change
AI is a lot more positive than crypto
@@royvirafayet6687 well i interpreted it as more risk than positive...
It takes 5 to 10 years to build one so you will go off faster with solar wind and battery storage. 🤷♂️
just one of the facts nuclear fans tend to willfully ignore
Can you run a tech facility 24/7 on renweables? How long can you run batteries? What happens when there's no sun and wind?
but they need constant reliable power, the company would go broke purchasing the battery storage needed to run the servers when the wind isn't blowing and it's night.
@@meadpro no, the company would just not get national subsidies which Google absolutely will with these nuclear plants

It isn't a warning sign of using too much energy?
TERMINATOR!! Nobody sees this path?
All this just so Google AI can tell you that the Titanic sank in 1912, 1997 and 2010 lol
Power generation in the hands of individual companies - not sure i am comfortable with that idea. Perhaps if the company was focused on being a Power generator and provider, but in this case we are dealing with a company that has its tentacles in more and more areas of business and are basically making themselves "too big to fail". A free market requires companies that can be outcompeted.
with any luck the anti trust ruling goes through next year and google will have to split off google ads
welp that's already the sad reality we live in
"Everytime we ask it something, it goes BVWOOSH?!" Hahaha this anchor is great
Google has nukes now 😂
Island has had surplus electricity for decades harvesting their energy from geothermal stuff.
Europe you’re behind, I beg you to innovate ASAP you’re getting too far behind the US and Asian companies.
What an absolute joke, mining industry lobbyist get good bang for their buck should be the headline.
If Google deploys 7 "small" nucelar power plants they are propably around 300 MW each. In total 2100 MW. Those are producing around 15 TWh per annum. Roughly 1500-2000 Wind Turbines with some battery storages would do the same job. Those could be buildt in 1-2 years instead of 2035 and would be cheaper and would not produce nuclear waste. So WTF?
Google can build 7 nuclear plants, but UK government can not afford one, has to ask for external investors. My lord, who will be ruling the world? I see a very gloomy future for our future generations.
Stop AI
more powerful, more greedy and few competition, first to none, dominate the world.
Why!????? Google. Lets invest INTO energy from the waves os a lot better. Yes it os expensive but on long Run pays off.
after decades of nuclear freezing the big 7 said "if you want your vegan dog watch canine porno videos generated by AI we need to build new nuclear plants" humans "ok go for nuclear "

Nuclear power to save the earth!
Next Orwell talk, after "war is peace"...
nah just to feed useless AI
Drank the nucular koolaid, did you?
Only if we build these reactors with almost 100% Co2-neutral concrete and also the other Materials must be produced up to 100% Co2-neutral and must be 100% Co2-neutral over their whole life-cycle (INCLUDING their Recycling!!!). Otherwise its again a dangerous Illusion and does NOT help the planet!!!!
@@sirensynapse5603Drank the fossil fuel koolaid, did you?
The negative issue with nuclear was safety. Microsoft redesigned nuclear reactor to be extremely safe! As long they use a new design then it shouldn't be a problem to use nuclear.
All Nuclear energy production and waste management should be monitored closely and safety standards strictly ensured.
Why aren't they considering generating electricity from volcanos?? From what I have heard is that scientists say that there is like 20 million years of electricity readily available from the earths core to harvest.
volcanoes are in short supply, all the evil masterminds already using them.
because you can't conveniently build a volcanoe near your company server room, power is useless if you can't access it easily.
Review how Google is putting money on that.
Google can suggesting that Taiwan build a nuclear power plant.
Oh gee...why isn't Google using solar or wind power?
I guess they still get a Climate Rating of A Plus though, right?
Every burp and fart you make that is heard by Alexa is Stored Forever in the AI data centers!
Don't say "tech giant to press the nuclear button", please :D
Huh, I think Steven hawks was correct about AI. Having to much technology will cause electricity damage will shout down all the power supply. It will be my own prediction & opinion.
Has nobody watch the matrix or terminator movies? We're just giving the machines nuclear power?
We are at the point in the movie where they disregard the scientists.
chill out, "ai" will never actually amount to anything useful, don't buy into the hype
I don't want their Ai bs
Is it me or does it sound like a bad idea to let companies who are known to cut corners to build nuclear reactors?
How does a IT company build nuclear reactors?
They pay a nuclear company to build it for them, obviously.
Google has over 200 B USD in cash, that is more deploy able capital than any EU country. They can do what most countries cannot do.
How do you make your own pants? You buy them.
@@jakobfromthefence ah yes, because it's so convenient to buy, use & throwaway nuclear pants, now everybody can buy.
Google might not even exist in the next 10 years, the plants will probably belong to a country
The same way that other companies do. With lots of steel and cement.
Well it’s pretty true. I made a calculation for fun to power one ai rack you need about 0.1% of a GW nuclear factory to power and train it. …. ( I work in semiconductor)
So yes this stuff will burn the world 😂
Anyways …. I’m still not sure this video is not an ai generated video 🤪
No.
Also need innovation is Power Technology !
What a retrograde move by these energy-hungry companies ! Saying 'shame' will be being euphemistic.

Data centres building their own power plants. That is a good idea. Government seem reluctant to build data centres because the prices of electricity rise for citizens if they get power from the main grid.
Thank god, hopefully these plants will help improve public perception on Nukes.
This is a very sad and scary development. The global community needs to reign these tech giants before it is too late.
It's crazy how much power it needs

are we dumb ? no one sees this as bit suspicious? give it access to nerve gas as well while you re at it
Skynet is here. AI only need power... no human... no water... only power and power.
While I am waiting on my letter to arrive in Germany. Maybe the fools in the comment thread don't understand that AI is not going nuclear but data centers of AI services will get electricity from nuclear reactors. AI doesn't have access to the nuclear reactor 😅
We already being controlled by A.I.
For AI, you need a lot of cheap, stable power. Currently, we estimate AI electricity consumption in the US to be around 150 TWh. In 2030, it will be around 600 TWh. In comparison, whole Germany uses about 500 TWh of electricity.
So those few nuclear reactors will be followed by many more...
This sounds like a great idea, unless there's not enough expertise to go around to ensure safe operation and monitoring.
Another reason why AI needs to be regulated...
Ridiculous, excessive and unnecessary!
The world has more than enough renewable energy, and storage is becoming cheaper and cheaper.
Well, that was not very "expert" response or questioning.. lol
finally some good news that need that sodium cooled nuclear fusion my guy
They need thorium nuclear plants
Where is the AI part? Its only mediocre LLMs that are currently hyped. Don't say, they invest nuclear plants to make crappy LLMs even bigger? Chatbots and Clippy 2.0 are not AI!
Sooner or later Ai will figure out how to create their own nuclear reactors 😅
I re-watched HBO's "Chernobyl" too recently for this news.
If you are afraid of nuclear power you need to check why and who made you that way.
This directly affect us Pittsburghers and our nuclear capacity should be used to fix our power crisis not for a useless waste of energy that could be way better done other ways
This is absolutely abhorrent that we’re risking huge amounts of or lakes and rivers for ai beyond unacceptable levels of waste too
To train these llm models yes it sucks a lot of energy, but once you run a simple quert on these trained models those query as well suck a lot more energy then a simple google or bing search. I use local LLMs and can see GPU hitting 100% and if you are using CPU alone that to hits 70 or 80% and takes ages to answer a simple question. It's not the AI we usually imagine, these are basically human like chatbots running on LLM.
Imagine how they would have covered the same topic if it was Tesla the one going nuclear first.
So AI hype potentially leads to more chernobyls, gotcha.
And they will put them in the backyards of poor people. It will be all fine until the first Chernobyl, and then they will say "no one could know, so it couldn't be prevented".
What a waste of electricity
A more balanced reporting would be apprciated. Less sensationalism please
