Sooo I’m also thinking of returning to mountain bike and I think I’d use an EMTB a lot more even commuting and taking away with my camper , the Autoshift or free shift (still a bit foggy on the difference between these two, would be great I live in rural Devon which even my home city plymouth is very hilly and pretty steep in places, I’ve worked out a partial off road route to work which will keep me away from traffic on some roads too, but realistically which is the more affordable bikes available with automatic shifting please, hard or soft tail , but leaning more towards soft tail as I think having an EMTB would also make me more up for longer off road road mix exploring

For eMTB under 4000 I'd say definitely go full suspension. I converted a nice riding hard tail 29r to a mid drive eMTB and the extra weight without suspension made it a brutal harsh ride. Extra speed and unsuspended weight really beat the tar out of me and the bike - actually shook things loose on the bike that had never come loose before and that was just a couple rides on fairly tame XC trails just to test it out. Ended up putting smooth pavement tires on it and using it for greenway rides.
    TLDR I got a Giant Trance E+ Pro 29er 20mph (usa version)

That Stance is definitely worth checking out and you can upgrade as you go including all the way up to 800WH battery. I will tell you your not really going to get a good full suspension EMTB for 2 grand but you don't have to spend 6 either. STEVE commuting to work with my restricted EMTB is killer! For the sub 4k ebikes , im still riding my 2019 giant fathom and it was only 2k for a hardtail , sadly i didn't have the budget for the full suspension at the time but no regrets so far.
Only thing i changed was : 1. I upgraded front suspension from the crappy suntour to a roxchox pike for 450€ and 2. changed to shimano brakes for 80€.
Only thing that would make this bike more amazing would be a little bigger battery. Maybe i can send it in to renew the cells for bigger ones and upgrade the 400wh stock battery for something around 600wh. As a new original battery costs over 800€ and refurbishment + upgrade only 350€

Forks and damper are so basic, I don't know how all these ride in practical though because, that's a whole nother conversation. The non anal answer to the question about derestriction is no. However it depends on which country you are riding in. If Bosch want to be fussy about it just buy another brand with a compatible motor for the derestricting devices found on the internet. I have an early brose and my device is easy to fit and it improves the riding experience. My next bike will be a 45kph bike with plates and insurance because the new legal power restrictions allow those to go to 1000w motor power. EMBN showing an actual e motorbike and not a derestricted bike is just misdirection.
