Most of the names are either names of saints or taino tribes names. So it ain't that hard. The rest of the names are just things like Lajas (roof tiles), Barranquitas (cliffs), Aibonito (oh-so-pretty), Rincón (corner), Hormigueros (ant colony), Culebra (snake) and other funny names like that.
TTS: It's technically Spanish. Me: _pushes up glasses_ Technically? It's literally Spanish. Also, me: Doesn't notice the translator is set to English because I can't read Japanese.
You could argue that proper names like "Puerto Rico" don't really belong to a certain language because they tend to stay the same across multiple languages. Like, Puerto Rico is called Puerto Rico in both Spanish and English (and Japanese as well though it's spelled with katakana there). However, the name was originally a simple Spanish phrase meaning "rich port", so you can also argue that it's a Spanish name. So that's probably why the person said "technically".
@@flamingspinach this is like saying pasta is not italian because everybody calls it pasta, is it not? Puerto rico was originally spanish, so it is spanish regardless of how many people call it that across the globe.
@@jeremywinst First, remember we are talking about the word, not the actual object "pasta". Obviously pasta, the food, is an Italian food. The word "pasta" is not exactly in the same situation as the name "Puerto Rico", but it's similar. "pasta" isn't a proper noun, but it has been borrowed into English. So "pasta" is definitely also an English word now ― that's why it can be found in all English dictionaries. It does originate from Italian, but there are actually a huge number of words in English that originate from other languages, so that doesn't necessarily make them not English words anymore. Like, "originate" is from French. "dictionary" is from Latin, etc. But I would agree with you that it makes more sense to call "pasta" an Italian word than to call "originate" a French word. That's because the meaning of the word "pasta" refers to something Italian (pasta the food), whereas the meaning of the word "originate" doesn't really have anything to do with France.
@@flamingspinachthat just makes it make even less sense since pasta is a new word for a dish, the name of a dish, something that didn't already exist before, Puerto is literally port in English, so yeah, Puerto Rico is Spanish and not exactly a noun. People call Japan both Japan or nihon(don't remember exactly) sometimes, it is just a preference for most people, Puerto Rico just wasn't given a proper translation I suppose because it isn't as relevant as other countries(like Japan)
