FELIDAE (1994, Wild Bunch Germany, 82 min.). “Oh no, stranger. The dead come to me,” whispers Jesaja, the cat Guardian of the Dead in the skeleton-filled catacombs and labyrinths of director Michael Schaack’s brilliant and surprisingly graphic animated feature about a grisly serious of unsolved murders among a group of domestic cats. (“Felidae” is the scientific name for cats.) A combination feline detective story, Gothic mystery and occult horror, FELIDAE follows green-eyed protagonist Francis (voiced by Ulrich Tukur) and his grizzled, one-eyed companion Blaubart (voiced by Mario Adorf) as they unravel a series of killings stretching back decades, involving death cults, genetic experimentation and a mysterious martyr religion. One of the most sought-after titles among world animation fans and never before officially released in the U.S., FELIDAE marries the dark, adult themes and nightmarish imagery of PLAGUE DOGS and WATERSHIP DOWN with the family friendly animation style of Don Bluth circa THE SECRET OF NIMH. Be forewarned, though: this is not a kids’ animated movie - FELIDAE features R-rated language and cat-themed slang (humans are dissed as merely “can openers”), bloody dissections and even simulated cat sex. “Truly this activity was beyond The Aristocats”, as the narrator jokingly purrs. Newly scanned and restored in 4K from the original camera negative and sound elements by Deaf Crocodile for this release, FELIDAE finally emerges as one of the great animated features made for adults from the past thirty years. Also featuring the voices of Klaus Maria Brandauer, Wolfgang Hess, Helge Schneider. In German with English subtitles. - Фільми й анімація
I just got my copy in the mail. It’s the efforts of companies like Deaf Crocodile that gives me hope for the future of film preservation and appreciation.
Felidae is by no means perfect. But it’s such a gloriously brazen and sincere work, and a personal favourite of mine. And the original German audio helped put so much emotion and character back into it, which was lost in the English dub.
Thank you for doing cinema this service, Deaf Crocodile! You forever have my respect and admiration!
Thanks so much.
The director behind this - Michael Schaak - a German animator, is a genious of making adult animated movies with a lot of dark humor and great visualization.
I am utterly _stoked_ that this is finally getting a proper US release! I can’t wait!
Wow, 1994? I would have guessed at least 10 years earlier just based on the animation style. Looking forward to checking this out.
Well it was a European film not made by one of the leading (American) animation studios of the 90s such as Disney and Warner Brothers, and was based on a novel from 1989, so that's probably where the 80s vibes are coming from.
Well it was a German Film
I have only just read the book, and I was hooked. Brilliant, brilliant. Francis is a wonderful narrator. On the hunt for the next book. Praise nothing but praise.😿😻😻😻😻😻
Ah man, I've only seen Felidae once in my teens- someone uploaded an English-language dub of it on YT- and I remembered liking it. I remember some of the more shocking moments of the film, and this trailer reminded me of a couple more. It feels like high time for a revisit once it comes out and in 4K too. I think I will enjoy it even more now that I'm a bit older and have seen some more darker animated movies like Watership Down and The Plague Dogs. Looking forward to this one!
Definitely secured myself a pre-order of this film. Having seen the English dub and desired to see the German version, Felidae is one of the most delightfully nightmarish yet fascinating animated films I’ve ever seen. I’m so happy it’s finally getting a proper, high quality release and it makes me hopeful that other international animated films will get such treatment (one that immediately comes to mind is the mystical and beautifully animated 1957 film The Snow Queen). 😊
This is one of those movies you don't forget in a hurry. Great to see it getting the treatment it deserves.
For real, I love it for that.
this looks brilliant! thank you for alerting us all to this .I will certainly be seeking it out to buy!
Awesome! This is one I've specifically been wanting to see, glad it's getting remastered. Looking forward to it!
I can only dream for "Tragedy of man" next...
If you like animation, you're going to LOVE our 2025 lineup.

I have that dvd as well!
YES! Finally somebody gives this film some much needed love.
Pre-orders are finally up and I can't wait to get my hands on this. You guys do great work.
I’ve been waiting for this moment
Your wait is nearly over!

Can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this film at long last!

@@deafcrocodile I watched it just the other day. It was excellent, and looked awesome
So excited for this!!!
YOOOO seeing this in HD will be AWESOME
I'm so excited for the 4k release! I love this movie and the book and the comic!
Gonna be the best release of the year imo. I hope you guys can release The King and the Mockingbird sometime
Simply amazing.
Seeing one of my faforite movies in this good quality is a dream come true.
I remember how I went to see this on release day, when I was 13 or so. They played it on the biggest screen of the cinema, probably expecting to do this one really well, but there was only one more person in the huge room and all the other seats were empty. A week later, I went to see it again with my little brother, who was 10 at the time, and I had to smuggle him in because the movie was rated 12. As it turned out, we went to see it just in time because a couple of days later it already wasn't playing anymore. The movie bombed reeaally hard, barely making the Top 10.
Never heard of this it looks amazing!
I highly recommend the novel this is based on, too
Looking forward to seeing it very much
I'm impressed. Congratulations, well done! I finally see my children as they once were. Very best regards!
Literally cannot wait, I check the site for the pre order launch every day.

This looks amazing, but different than Watership Down. Looking forward to seeing it
I hope the dub can still be found somewhere, it was quite a good one.
definitely a surprise, but a most welcome one! good choice guys
Animated giallo... from Germany... with cats. How to out-Argento Argento. I love this film. ^^
You guys rock
Thank you!
I love this film!! bought a bootlegged copy of this year's ago and got a fake case and cover for it! So glad I can now buy it legit!!
The original camera negative?? How the hell do you get your hands on something like that?? Even though it's from the '90s I still think it's a medium sized miracle such a thing survived to be used again now. As a 2d animation enthusiast I'm all over this. Please let there only be good news for this restoration from now on!
>In German with English subtitles.
I honestly expect someone may splice the audio from the English dub with the restored footage, though given there's a small moment deleted from the DVD version (its between the discussion with Pascal and when Francis and Bluebeard are in the snow), who knows how seamless that would be
Could the dub being for PAL regions also be an issue? From what I can find it was a UK dub that is featured on Australian VHS and German and French DVD.
I wish it could be included as even an SD extra.
@@legokraytdragon There's a NTSC Laserdisc release of the English Dub which only came out in Singapore which I do have in my small Laserdisc collection.
That release along with many other earlier home video releases actually contains the footage that is missing from the official German DVD of the film
@@ancientpixels94 Thanks for that info. Fascinating that it was on an obscure LD release. Wonder why Deaf Crocodile couldn’t include it.
@@legokraytdragon The rights for the English dub aren't clear. The licensor couldn't confirm or assure us on the standing of them. As such, we couldn't risk using them. The original cast is much better. Bluebeard's voice by Mario Adorf is particularly terrific!
@@legokraytdragon Rights issues according to a recent response post they did on Twitter
Watched this when I was four years old. Gave me nightmares for days..
Got this one on always Subtitles or can you watch it without it ? Greetings from Germany
I wish Felidae gets remastered.
???
This looks stellar. 1 question though, will the 4K be region free?
yep - blu-ray is region A though
Will there be some sort of digital release?
Was only a disc made or is there a digital version?
Crime
Sex
Cats
This movie has it all
I've followed animation all my life since the 80s, but knew nothing about this. I assume we'll get a UK release? Not seeing any pre orders anywhere..
I love this movie.
just randomly looked up this movie to find this and it's real!? SOLD
This reminds of astriocats and tlk for some rewson
PUT IT IN THEATERS PUT IT ON IMAX
Seems like I ignored the credits back in the day or forgot about it 😅, but I didn't know that this movie is a german production to this moment. I am rewatching it right now and noticed names like Helge Schneider in the credits (famous entertainer, comedian and musician here in germany you have to check him out !)
And the other reason why I am suprised is that german movies are usualy trash at least nowadays.
I wonder if some Grandma found this on VHS and thought it was some Disney/ Don Bluth movie brought it home and soon regretted it
The poster is just a cat and the moon it looks harmless then you watch the movie where it's a murder mystery
I remember this film about cats and murder.
Finally 🩵
You think we’ll get a Region 2 release of this for us UK and European folk?
That's up to the rights holders. We only licensed the film for North America.
@@deafcrocodile Understandable!
Why are the texts on the Computer screen in english?
They are supposed to be in german.
They created the screens in multiple languages when they made the film. It made more sense to use the English version so they wouldn't need to be subtitled - particularly if there was also dialogue that would also be subtitled.
Will this version be sold in Europe? In Germany? It's always terrible to have to order from outside the EU and pay customs. And then worry if you're actually going to get the goods.
As a German, i think this movie will be Locked forever because of this Idiot of Author.
Was this in USA ?
The movie was made in Germany.
no english dub? :(
no
This movie should be rated R for violent images and sexual content
This hateful cartoon.💢💢💢💢💢💢💢
Oh my god, I thought people had forgotten about this animated film noir. I think this restoration of the trailer is amazing 🩷
