    I think more kid's movies need to be like Felidae. Not the gory stuff, obviously, but rather, the breathtaking (2D) animation and deep themes. Felidae took RISKS and I applaud that. It had a story to tell and it told it. The plot is also unique, with it focusing on a common housecat to try and solve a string of murders. The animation is incredible and I like how it alternates between styles when it comes to Francis' dreams. It's visually engaging and the characters (for the most part) are easily identifiable. I only wish the mystery was a tad stronger since the murderer's identity is a little obvious and *SPOILER!* but the Cult of Claudandus is still active by the end of the film so it makes you wonder how much good Francis really did.

      Yeah. That is amusing. Felidae is my favorite mature animated movie. So I have seen the uncensored version on UA-cam plenty of times. I can tell what the censored stuff is in this review video a lot of the time. I can tell just based on context. It is amusing to have cute fluffy kittens as something to censor. My favorite scene in the movie is the sex scene. The review has this about 6:00 minutes in. The reviewer really freaks out during this part. Then there is a cut to some cute kittens with words saying "They're just playing". Okay, we can use that as a euphemism. To his credit, the reviewer did point out that the scene is potentially dangerous. It is due to the circumstances of the first two murders. I sure didn't notice on my own, because I was taken away by the thrill of the scene. That is cleaver of the reviewer.

    In a weird way, I used to love this movie to the bits. Hell this movie has the most oddest vibes to this day, and yet.. it still fascinates me in a odd way. I still have the main song of this movie that was sung by Boy George on my mp3-player (yes, I am still own a mp3-player because why the hell not for nostalgic reasons) while keeping on listening to this melancholic music alongside thinking about this movie that had a huge impact on me.

    I just watched this for the first time and I don't say this very often anymore but I've really never seen anything like it. I'm completely fascinated. It's brutal, stomach-turning, and vulgar, and it's animated like an 80's Disney film. The animation is really strong, the voice acting is great, and I'm just completely perplexed as to how something like this even got made. (Now, I have never seen Watership Down or The Plague Dogs, but from what I'm reading it seems like they're in the same vein, so those are definitely on my to-do list now.)
    Forgive me if any of these are silly questions, but can anyone fill me in on:
    What sort of social climate was this movie made under? Who was the target audience here? Was there a big demand for this?
    I feel like there's a social commentary under the surface here that I'm not necessarily understanding. What exactly is this movie trying to say? Germans doing unholy lab experiments on living things seems like low-hanging fruit. Is there more here? Maybe something more pertinent to German culture in the 90's?
    Thanks for any insight you can provide! It's just such a bizarre film and I'm struggling to find resources that go into it in any sort of depth.

    Suck it Academy awards for calling animated movies “kids stuff” (an equivalent to calling comic books “kids stuff”) this is why animated movies are made to be an art form and not a genre. They are made to be dark, gritty, intense, and great storytelling and great animation and they’re like highly detailed paintings that would show more and this is what this movie looks like.

    Want to see another fucked up talking animal cartoon. I recommend watching the computer animated South Korean film, Padok. It's about a mackerel who gets trapped by a fishermen and sent to a seafood restaurant where she tries to convince the other fish that there's hope to escape (or so she thinks). Like Felidae, it's a pretty messed up movie and will easily traumatize children with blood & gore, intense violence, and animal cruelty. 🐟

  • @Moony1568
    @Moony1568 Рік тому +1

    Aw yes, Felidae. I’m not a huge fan of this film and not because of the kitty death. Because it doesn’t do the book it’s adapted from justice. The book is great! I highly recommend it if you enjoy strange, but fun animal fiction. Do be aware that it is from the 90s (there are some slurs thrown around) and is pretty graphic with its descriptions. The pros out way the cons however. The book is quite funny. It’s a dark comedy, Francis is constantly making sarcastic quips and the book doesn’t take itself too seriously which is good because the premise is wild. Felidae tackles themes such as eugenics, human/animal relationships, animal experimentation, how we treat and look down upon animals, and about how animals really aren’t that much different from us.
    The movie though… it doesn’t do the book justice. It truncates the story down so much that it’s actually hard to follow the mystery. I agree that the story of the movie is sloppy. There’s not enough build up and the movie moves at a much quicker pace than the book. In the book, Francis sits down and thinks on what he’s discovered and gradually puts the pieces together. At least the movie was able to get the core message across albeit in a clumsy way.
    I’m not at all a fan of the character design. This aspect makes the movie hardly watchable for me. In the book, the breed of the cat is so important to the plot. Bluebeard is a Maine coon, Pascal is a Havana Brown, Felicity is a Russian Blue, Kong is a Persian and so on. The story is about eugenics and breeding, so the breeds need to be represented for the mystery to make more sense. However, the characters look nothing like the real breeds. They barely resemble cats for that matter. What even is Kong? He’s not a cat. Wtf is he? I despise Pascal’s design. Havana browns are such beautiful cats and they made him look like a gremlin.
    Anyway, read Felidae. The movie itself is not bad imo, but the book is way WAY better.

Also it's funny how the animation studio who made this went on to do that 1997 animated Pippi Longstocking movie and it's also sad they went bankrupted in 2010. Finally I would really love for GKIDS to get USA DVD rights to this movie cause it is so for them and as a way to make an adult animation licensing division, plus it would be not bad if they make a new English dub for it as well.
