In the past few decades, the art of stop motion animation has seen a tremendous renaissance, beginning with films like Henry Selick’s and Tim Burton’s THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, CORALINE and CORPSE BRIDE and the work of Aardman Animation in the UK (the wildly creative “Wallace and Gromit” films). It’s continued and expanded both in TV and streaming (“Robot Chicken”) and features (FANTASTIC MR. FOX, Guillermo del Toro’s PINOCCHIO).
The recent arthouse success of VFX master Phil Tippett’s nightmarish MAD GOD has stirred renewed interest in the work of the great troika of Surreal Masters of Stop Motion from the 1970s and 1980s: the Brothers Quay (STREET OF CROCODILES, 1986), Jan Švankmajer (ALICE, 1988) - and arguably the least-seen of the three, the brilliant Czech animator Jiří Barta.
Born in Prague in 1948, Barta studied film at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, and began making his first stop motion animated shorts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, often using wood, fur, hair and other organic materials to create his strange and Gothic visions. His early short “The Vanished World Of Gloves” (Zaniklý svet rukavic, 1982) is a marvelous and eccentric tour through cinema history, told entirely through animated gloves.
In the mid-1980s, Barta began work on his first feature - and acknowledged masterpiece -- THE PIED PIPER (KRYSAR, 1986). Based on The Pied Piper of Hamelin, is set in a dark and twisted medieval village of narrow streets and weird Gothic arches, half-CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI and half-Jan van Eyck. The money-obsessed citizens, carved out of wood blocks and speaking in an onomatopoeic babble (invented by Barta himself) are like George Grosz caricatures, literally spouting coins from their mouths instead of words. The rats are far more organic and sympathetic, made of real fur and whiskers, constantly tunneling and burrowing under the towering arches and cobblestone streets above. (In one of the film’s many surreal moments, a rat emerges from a gargoyle’s gaping maw.)
For the first-time ever on Blu-ray, Deaf Crocodile and Comeback Company will be releasing Barta’s THE PIED PIPER in a newly-restored version.
Thank you for posting this video. Glad I found this work by Jiří Barta (born 1948). I'll have to watch more of his work, which reminds me of fellow Czeck artist Jan Švankmajer (born 1934) who is one of my favorite stop motion animation artists, has work dating back to 1964. He must have been an influence for Jiří Barta. The Quay Bothers (born 1947) are American and work in England, they have some downright nightmarish short films. Being shot on film gives these artist's animation that special look that digital probably can't quite replicate, but being restored onto digital preserves that look.
You guys at Deaf Crocodile are absolutely amazing. Never stop doing what you’re doing! :)
Wow. Stunningly gorgeous. It's so good to see this one of a kind masterpiece getting the treatment it deserves.
Just watched the film and restoration and it blew my socks off. Top 10 blu-rays of the year.
Looks amazing! Can’t wait to check it out!!
this looks amazing
It is!
Love animation getting the respect it deserves. Can't wait!
I adore this film
Best label around...I own all blurays from DC. This will be no exception
What else have they done?
Just ordered this directly from Deaf Crocodile. They're releasing some very cool stuff
@@TheNoticer83 thank you!
I've seen this film before on Wiki and saw Steve Reviews do a review. I've always wanted to see it myself cause the style looked so dark and unique for how its world was depicted. Lifeless and mechanical like nobody was real.
If this came with a bonus soundtrack CD then it would be perfect!
The soundtrack is so unique and spine chilling. From the fluttery flute in some segments to that guitar shred during the scenes of dread. Its such an unusual yet very effective combination.
this looks incredible. Something in the stop motion that I have not seen before. I will order it right away when it hit the marked. Could it be that you will release Toys in the attic also later?
Where can i watch full movie
Type Krysař Jiří Bárta. I just watched the whole thing on UA-cam
No way to get this beautiful release in UK?
It's available but it is region A though, so you'd need a region-free player to watch.
Region B please.
Wish we could but we don't have world rights.
