We overhauled our entire merch store with fresh designs! teespring.com/stores/debossgarage
"Do you remember how to put everything together again?" Rich: "yes I do remember i have photographic memory...somebody told me once...I forget" Lol
Now that’s a man that enjoys his work and does a great job
Everyone has a photographic memory.....some just don’t have film. Lol
Good old massive Ferguson
On our farm we have a Massey 65 with the Perkins diesel. Has dripped oil from the rear main seal for over 40 years.
Time to replace it.
I had an injector pump fall off a loader at work while in use! That was fun
I would just love a kitty in my shop, just like yours! Makes your day better for sure!
Got my "Here We Go" t-shirt yesterday. Going to represent DEBOSS in the Seattle, WA area.
I picked one up when they first came out and someone immediately recognized it. Was pretty surprised until I remembered I'm surrounded by farmers.
200,000k subs here we come
Its crazy how fast they grew but when I found the channel I knew it would.
I don't know how you don't have more subscribers! Another great video as always.
Always a thumbs up for Rich and the momma kitty. Keeping it real and true. Can't go wrong with that recipe. Thanks to Rich and Aaron the editor.
Experience goes a long way to getting things bad the right way. You know, "Practice makes perfect ".
The shop cat it awesome!
That was pretty cool and informative!! Thanks rich!! The whole rebuild was some handy knowledge!!
I also draw a vague pattern kinda like what it came from on a piece of cardboard and punch the bolts into the drawing about where the bolts would go on the part. There's a few other tricks I use but that's the main one.
Nice rebuild, it's nice to see a Massey back to life. 👏💪😎
Good for another 20,000 hours
I love these engine build videos, very informative
This is great editing. Thanks for the video and project.
I was going to sleep, but it can wait.
i really enjoy these videos rich. I come away knowing more about a perkins diesel than i ever wanted to know! keep it up!
So glad I found this channel
U my friend got ur self a subscriber
Thanks for video man!! You explained well and I enjoyed watching
Hey double a Ron, good job editing, like your style
One of my favourite engines
Hi Rich, You are one smart man. Love watching and wishing I had just some of the knowledge you have. Keep up the great work.
With Google and UA-cam you'd be amazed at what the average Joe can accomplish these days. Find some junk and take it down to bits.
Another way to learn is by helping some friends make a mess out of their things lol.
But the two most important things is to get past analysis paralysis. Matt @ Sloppy Mechanics has some great videos on dealing with this. Last but least is know when to ask for help when it comes to safety issues.
One point on the injection pump, when you take off the front cover plate behind the injection pump to remove the three bolts it makes no difference if the engine turns. The pump will only go back on the gear one way. You are right to mark the pump housing before removing the pump.
Hi from Clarksburg, ON. Love your videos.
You should put one of these in a mini-truck, just to do something different.
Or a 6.354, with a 4+brownie in a full size truck.
Great video deboss
Here we go!
Great video! always a pleasure watching you, entertaining and you learn something :) keep up the good work!
Agreed 👍
Love your videos keep up the good work
Nice Allied performance shirt xD
If I had a dollar for every one of those I pulled out of a combine, I would have 100 bucks!!
I have one of those memory things to, my problem is figuring out what were talking about again! 😷
Good video. The cat inspecting the work.
See you on the next installment
Great easy rebuild. Good camera and audio work. Try doing it on your back with less than 2 feet of clearance. bearing torques were 295 ft-lbs plus 1/4 turn.
The injection pump gear is captured will not jump a tooth. You can turn the engine over till the cows come home and the timing won't change
Yo mate, love the channel, im a diesel head over here in England, i love your educational vids on cummins, youve taught me a great deal, i need a 6bt in my life !!
Ive got a 2.5 turbo diesel in my transit over here in England , an old bosch ve pump that ive rebuilt and played with haha
love the vids - didnt know these older cummins came with the cav rotary pump only really seen the 4bt with the massive inline pump lol
KITTY!
Love this series. It's my favorite
8:53 ”that’s the way she goes” Zipties n biasplies springs to mind lol
New subscriber amazing channel keep up good work 👍🏻👍🏻
How good that stubby Milwaukee work
A little HOONIGANS Tribute there at the end , Thanks Rich
Many blessings , SMR
Nice!!
Friend of mine made "engine rigs" out of plywood so he could put the bolts on the "engine rig" in labeled places around the sides, bottom and top. They're all "tool boxes" made of wood.
I put an engine back together that came to me in boxes . And yes it ran .
"Start all, before you tighten any"....
Wise man say..
One of the best tips I ever got when I was young is to take a picture (old Polaroid) before disassembly to aid in reassembly. Now of course we have cell phones with great cameras. And I don't work on my own stuff anymore. I just watch you do it :)

Scarlet Begonia’s!!!
The time-lapse music reminds me of the Made in Poland channel.
Now that farmer will have to build the tractor around this engine. It all started with new tires.
I've been doing the job for 46 years and more, started when I was about 8, I just chuck all the bolts from the M/f tractors in a heap always seem to know where they go.
Like number 800, woot!!! :P
Almost all 4-cyl Diesels require a balance shaft, even if they do have weights on the crank. The vibrations would be insane anyways.
A video on how to paint an engine would be awesome (in my opinion, anyway) if you ever have a chance to film one!
We built a Cummins with the skid factory and I will paint that one. Should be out in a month or so
Extra !!!
30-40 years of Canadian weather :) and salt
Can't wait to hear this sweet thing run. Also, what was that round component bolted under the alternator at 14:21? Was it like a hydraulic pump or something?
13:01 cat
Im watching this instead of studying, again, heck...
Why didn't you use the bolts to hold the gasket in place when you installed the thermostat housing?
I just heard myself explaining bolts and nuts lmao
Very good
Great video very informant, I recently bought a Catterpillar 416, it has a 4.236 Perkins less than 1400 Hrs. it starts and sounds good, but I found water in the oil, so now it sits , I found out later it overheated in 2015, they replaced water pump but than it wasn't used much, it set for 7 years the oil pan froze and cracked, so in your expert opinion my question is where else could coolant be leaking from besides the head gasket? Because it started and sounded so good, but i won't start it anymore. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thank you.
Hey, what do you do if your injection pump has been spun or taken off when the timing isn't at "TDC" etc.?
Is it possible to turn the pump over and does it have an alignment marking of it's own shaft to it's own housing?
I congratulate you for your good videos you know I have a question I have a 2500, Dodge ram with the 6 bt engine and I had to change the gasket that came on one side because I was throwing oil and for that I had to remove the diesel pump but later to purge the lines does not want to tear or light me could you please help in any idea you have and thank you very much
Can you do a video of your cleaning your shop? That table makes me cringe..lol
That gasket tack looks like the bees knees after using permatex aviation gasket sealer for so long, I hate that stuff with a passion but man does it work well.
from at least the late seventies the proper Perkins diesel approved Gasket Sealer was a product called Hylomar. I did my four year apprentice at a Perkins Distributor in Australia, Stripped down and rebuilt more Perkins Diesels than I can remember, we used to joke about rebuilding them in our sleep!
@@adriaandeleeuw8339 Hylomar is great stuff, I've used it a fair bit as well.
Be careful with that gasket tack stuff. I usually only use it on one side of the gasket/mating surface because I've had it actually rip paper gaskets while tightening stuff together before when used on both sides of the gasket.
Will it fit in my honda?
Does it come with Vtec?
^.^
I had a dream I swapped a 3.9 Perkins with a 5 speed into a 1967 amc Rebel.
I hope you will show installing the rear main seal. I have the same engines in my boat and need to change them out because they leak and would like to see if there is a trick to it. Thanks!
The engine stand was in the way so I bolted it to the front section and then installed the rear main seal, clutch and flywheel when I removed the stand
I have an assortment of paint pens,,,, when there could be doubt, I dab a spot of paint on the bolt and a dab where they go,,,, diferent colour for every spot,,,, but most are obvious
I have a Perkins diesel 3.9 in my wood chipper, I believe it is a 1998 , my issue is it will run fine for a tree job, then we shut it down, and go to start it and it turns over but won't start , half hour or so later it starts, can you give advice on this
Not sure I agree that it matters about engine position when removing re-fitting the DPA pump, it turns at half crankshaft speed, same as the cam and is keyed to the gear, the is not enough cleanance in the timing case for the gear to jump so you can't get it wrong, I've removed and refitted hundreds without bothering to even check the engine position, never had a problem. Love the vids by the way even if you do blow up Detroits for fun.
¿what is that thing below the alternator? At first I thought it was the starter but it has two lines and it looks geared to the timing gear train. Is it the fuel lifter or an air compressor?
Deboss, do you have a 6bt Cummins rebuild playlist on your channel? Because I need to replace my head gasket on my 93 dodge.
Yep ua-cam.com/video/nrALF3qFo-c/v-deo.html
In old Days engine Will be paint after restoration
is the turbo version the same as non turbo?
Do you spray both sides of the gaskets with that spray-a-gaket? And is there a situation where you don't use anything on the gaskets? (how about with large "oring" type gaskets like the 6.0 powerstroke uses on the front and rear cover?) I'm self taught, and this is something I always ask myself when working on tractors and trucks.
You can but most guys use it to just hold things in place. If you want to do both sides they make the same stuff in a brush on form that makes less of a mess and is great if you've got a less than ideal sealing surface. Just be warned if you do both sides it is a B!tch to get the part off and you could easily break a big aluminum cover like that. So for this reason I only use it on both in RARE cases.
How many times you have bolts left over
It's comforting to see a seasoned professional use a somewhat cheap torque wrench instead of a 200€ Hazet (As a European, Snap-on(or off!) is not a thing.).
In Australia when I was doing my Apprenticeship we used Warren and Brown Torque wrenches I have several and have had them for over 40 years, the largest is a one inch drive 1000 ft lb version. and yes I have used it to tighten down head bolts.
Deboss I have a Massey leak y is my valve cover leaking fuel every were pleas help peg leg sed your the man
you forgot to mention how much you learned about engine building from all of the commentators
or you could mark the injection pump gear and transfer gear with circles
Could you get your hands on a Milwaukee 5400 lumen tower light and do a review?
We have one and it will be coming out soon
I developed a system recently, because yes I'm that heretical Ford guy who actually works on his own stuff, that simplifies labeling of connectors. BTW, I'm pretty sure Honda is a worse culprit for the same connectors issue, but I digress. You label each side of the connection with some blue tape and a black sharpie with A-Z, then 1-infinity, BEFORE you disconnect it ("A" on one side, "A" on the other, then pull it apart). Makes it really easy to get them back together and isn't super time consuming. I used to label them using words about where they go, like "coil" or "throttle body", but that was really cumbersome because of space constraints and time-consuming because lots of letters. Labeling both sides with the same letter makes it just go back together like LEGOs and is quick and easy. No thinking required when you have high cognitive load.
Speaking of which, what ever happened to the GTO? I binged all the videos but never got to see it painted!
Collin Onda very soon...
Cuantos hp tiene ese motor ? Yo lo tengo en un ursus 4514
Quick question, i know the common rail cummins’ have a tendency to ruin their injectors because they need an improved fuel filtration system over stock. Would it be a good idea to get one of those additional filtration systems? Or will that cause extra stress on the pump?
A lift pump will solve both those issues
GrandPrix LI a lift pump actually helps your fuel pump
As a tech i NEVER labeled anything. Like he said it only goes back together one way correctly. Theres only a VERY few situations where a bolt being a few mill to long would hurt. Like old ford straight 6cylinders a bolt will puncture the #1 cylinder if you put wrong one in. I dunno maybe we do have photographic memories i can visualize an engine bolt by bolt piece by piece being assembled in my head. I guess I'm naive to think everyone see's it this way
It comes with time doing something long enough. Adam Savage had a cool anecdote on it that the hardest thing about being a Maker was being able to visualize what you want to create in your head from start to finish before you even begin.
@@cumbob yeah thats a good quote. While i don't do engines daily i do build stuff daily that i have to visualize building large concrete structures for multi story buildings. Not as precise but very similar skillset mentally.
I can do the same but I've found bagging stuff that goes together speeds things up....now if I just could do it more often lol.
Another trick is after doing enough stuff that's hidden you get a good feel and can almost do it blindfolded. As for feel you also get a feel for torque and a guy I worked with was called the human torque wrench. He could geth things within a few ft lbs and honestly was as close as most with a torque wrench. He won quite a bit of beer money off of it too and shut down some torque Nazis who couldn't believe it lol.
@@southjerseysound7340 for me I use magnetic trays or one big one divided up by section. And muscle memory and the feel you can gain from it is amazing. Our brain does a lot of things subconsciously along with our bodies.
