I've always wanted to study Literature and i'm living that dream by watching your videos. Here in my country, which is the Philippines, we dont appreciate literature and art enough, we are more focused on science and mathematics which is just sad. thank you Emma for sharing with us your journey
It's the same with my country! As an aspiring literature student, it is really hard to feel valid! People think any other degrees except Maths and Science are useless since they won't apparently help you get jobs and picking such subjects are just signs of a weak student :/
@@yangwenli9808 Hi! Is ‘improving the economy of your country’ the sole reason of living? And anyway, speaking as a fellow Filipino, our country’s economy isn’t improving either, despite the education system being lopsidedly STEM-oriented and anti-Filipino (which really is just a way of the government to export cheap labor internationally). Who gets to study Literature and who doesn’t? That’s why we’re hopeful that Humanities and the Arts would also be regarded here in the same way STEM professions are. That’s all :)

Emma, thank you for giving me so much comfort in between my study sessions for my postgrad entrances. Your videos help me immensely, more than you could imagine especially during this exam heavy season. And I'm in Literature too so while I'm here to de stress I always do learn something from you ,which is so great that I'm gaining two things at once. It's a pleasure just watching how you go about your day and you talking about books and words and Literature and just life in general. Your channel is literally therapy for me and I'm grateful to you.
14:01 okay but like can we talk about her handwriting? I don't think I've ever seen such a graceful handwriting. Mine just looks like there was a war going on so I was in extreme hurry to finish my work 😂
You remind me that there’s so much beauty in life to explore.. just on simple walk ❤️ Been alone after a while because of my recent break up and i hope I thrive alone.
Seeing a few people talking about Utopia as though it's a genuine description of More's idea of a perfect society. In reality, there's a fair amount of ambiguity in the text in that respect; after all, Utopia means "no place" in Greek, and Hythlodaeus (the surname of the man who describes it) means something like "speaker of nonsense". So perhaps More wasn't really aiming to construct a convincing vision of a perfect society; perhaps Utopia is not a "utopia", but simply a foil for 16th-century Europe. Take, for example, the scene in which some foreign ambassadors arrive in extremely rich clothing, and are taken for the slaves of their attendants because of the Utopian attitude towards gold. This could easily be read as a satirization of the obscene wealth of the European nobility and the Catholic clergy (yes, More was an ardent Catholic and opposed the Reformation, but he was also a Renaissance humanist, and was thus a little more critical of the church than he is often remembered to be). In short, you can get a lot more out of this book if you don't immediately default to taking it at face value.
Thanks for the further background information. I have read a lot about More and his influence on the monarchy in England, even though he fell foul of it in the end.
I graduated from uni in May after making zero friends (I was a commuter so I guess it's to be expected) and having to do one and a half years of online school. I'm so sad I can never go back to a lovely campus like this as a student! PS I love your outdoorsy videos. I haven't been outside since march 2020 and they're just so lovely! Your main university building is really beautiful, Emma. How old is it? Reminds me of my old uni campus - full of history and a great place to learn because of those old place *vibes*.
@@emmiereads Yup! But then there’s also something oddly nice about writing and reading in modern buildings too - cafe chains and airports and hotel rooms. Something about their lack of history and culture is charming. Dunno. Probably just *vibes* again. Good luck on your assessments! ☺️
Good luck with War and Peace, I would suggest you had a quick look at the historical background that this book is set in. Not in-depth, just a general understanding of the invasion of Russia, etc.
You have the best keyboards. I'd love to get the white one, but it's crazy-expensive (even on sale). It looks like it's great quality, though, and very robust. That river looks so high. I hope everyone was okay in your area. Several weeks ago, a huge tropical depression came through my area a made a lot of flooding. Some streets turned into rivers ,and people had to be evacuated. We were extremely fortunate in my house where we only got some water in the basement. It was a little bit overwhelming to take care of, but it was nothing like what some other people had to deal with. Thank goodness we have a wet vac.
Hi Emmie, I hope that all is well. I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your Vlogs. They are very relaxing, and it's always nice to get a peek at lives others lead. I wish you excellence in your studies, and look forward to your next video.

I didn't like Before The Coffee Gets Cold either. I thought the rules were sort of silly (the ghost going to the toilet? what?), the characters were rather empty, and the writing was just straight up poor. Maybe the writing also seemed so poor because right before that I'd read About Grace (Anthony Doerr), and the writing was exquisite. I'm reading Far From The Madding Crowd (Thomas Hardy) right now. Those squirrels! Such cute silliness. Your uni building looks so beautiful. Which uni are you at? Of course don't answer if you can't for privacy reasons.
love seeing your outfits! Also, I don't know if you've already read it, but there's a book called Grendel which is from Grendel's pov and it's very interesting take and a quick read!
Emm, we adore you. Thanks for taking me, us, along on yr week. I so enjoy seeing what you're reading. I watched the movie, "Beowulf", and hope to read later or sooner. (I don't like knowing the storyline first. And the book is usually more detailed and better, not always, but usually. I'm almost positive you go to the same school as me! I could be wrong but the school is in Ontario, Canada. I am so happy to be back in actual in-person classes again, plus the campus is so beautiful and it really helps with learning, if that makes sense? I hope your classes are going well and mid terms aren't too bad for you! (:
Perhaps Utopia works best in contradistinction to Candide, which pokes fun - at every opportunity - of the idea that certainly we live in the best of all possible worlds. Neither is persuasive, IMHO.
It's an interesting contrast I suppose, and one that never occurred to me to look into, although the two works don't exactly deal with the same issues. If you take Utopia at face value and assume it's More's idea of a perfect society, then it's a kind of political treatise; an idea of how to create a good society in the world. Candide, on the other hand, is a refutation of the idea that the world is perfect in the first place; if that were true, we wouldn't need to build a perfect society at all, because everything is destined to happen in the best possible way. So considering that, the best foil for Candide is really G.W. Leibniz (who came up with the "best of all possible worlds" idea and for whom Pangloss is an insert). All that said, I'm sure a great deal could be achieved by comparing Utopia to Candide's garden, so in that respect, this is a really good idea.
