- A 9-year-old boy is a sole survivor of an attack that killed the rest of his family members. The Schmidt family was vacationing on the camping grounds at Maquoketa Caves State Park. Police say the family was in a tent when an intruder entered and fatally gunned down 42-year-old Tyler Schmidt, his wife, Sarah, and his 6-year-old daughter. Reports of the shooting prompted authorities to immediately shut down the camp. The suspect's body was later discovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
This is extremly sad and horrible. That poor boy. I can't imagine how he can deal with that. I just don't even have words.

Nothing will ever justify murder, I don't care if you have suicidal thoughts or want to off yourself, there's no possible reason to go out of your way to murder 3 innocent people, let alone from a family of 3, and to leave a young boy all alone with no one parent to be there for him. It’s just… beyond my understanding why these terrible people need to do these terrible things. They were such a beautiful family and did nothing to deserve this. I can’t even think of imagine how the boy is feeling… They were going on a fun vacation trip, little did he know, he would soon be alone. I’m literally crying right now and I have no idea how to express this with words.

I posted a more detailed explanation in a comment, but to summarize, this man was likely depressed and may have wanted to bring attention to his situation by killing a few people before ending himself, which clearly worked, as a suicide case usually isn't reported unless something unique happened.
Regardless of if this theory is true, we really need to pay more attention to one's mental health. Instead of crying over the fact that this happened, think about why it happened and try to prevent it from happening again.

I will never understand a senseless act like this. He could have just put a bullet in his own head, but to kill an innocent father mother and daughter and leave a little boy without the people he knows and loves the most. This is heart wrenching. As someone who used to be extremely suicidal,...this just doesn't make sense to me. If someone wants to take their life, fine, I feel horrible for them. However, when they take the lives of innocent people along with them, that's when I lose all empathy.

It’s because our society has moved from away from god. Man is a theological being, and without that guiding force, people begin to suffer from existential crisis. This then culminates into either suicidal or homicidal ideation for some, addiction for others, or just plain depression for most. Man will always seek immortality, either through god/cultural systems, and since our culture has devolved into meaningless consumerism he resorts to acts of violence, which he hopes will earn him his place infamy.

That precious little boy. It breaks my heart she described him standing there like that. He so needed someone on their knees at his level assuring him he was okay and wrapping him in a hug in that moment. He was probably so unsure how to act in front of people after seeing something so terrifying and traumatic.
This is very sad this happened near me and my mom is the teacher of this third grader that survived. I remember her telling me this and me balling my eyes out! Especially my mom. I’m not even kidding my mom was this third graders teacher this year! R.I.P☹️

As a senior I've noticed how quickly things have changed the way they drive etc looking for confrontation has to do with drugs causing this murderous behaviour with a complete lack of feelings.
I live 45 minutes away from there, it was in the Maquoketa caves in Maquoketa Iowa. So crazy to know that stuff like this is happening so close to my hometown. I live in Cedar Rapids Iowa which is where they were from. It’s just so crazy to hear about this.

I used to camp with my son when he was little and for various reasons, I decided I would never go camping anywhere again until I could make sure to be armed. My heart breaks for this family. No one deserves this and this poor child.. I just can’t. Unfortunately, camping is a dangerous undertaking. At the very least, make sure you and every adult with you is armed at all times. 😥
