      I hate that skin that attached the tongue. I would get bumps at the connection point and they’d hurt. I wanted it done but no doctor would ever consider it. Guess they couldn’t get paid from insurance for it.

      That's awesome! I still have my tongue-tie (I'm 52) and every dentist I've ever had was amazed that I didn't have a lisp and when I've asked about releasing my tongue-tie, they advised me against it, fearing it could introduce a speech issue.

    My husband was born tongue-tied and it wasn't treated which caused feeding issues, and when he started learning to speak, he developed a speech impediment which persists today. When our son was born tongue-tied, we had it treated when he was five weeks old. He's never had a problem since!

    I was born and raised in Germany but I am actually turkish.
    I had a tongue tie when I was around 6 or 7 years old.I never told my mom that it was actually annoying me - but it did annoy me! I was scared at that time for having a surgery.
    When I was 16 years old I had my tongue tie finally removed and it felt so amazing after that!
    I would recommend to do a surgery on your child when it's a bit older...not with 3 week old babies

    My heart goes out to these moms. We're all just trying to do our best for our babies. My daughter nursed but it got to the point that I couldn't nurse properly and felt helpless. I had an LC recommend me to a pediatric dentist with a three month wait so I put myself on that list but also got a second opinion from my pediatrician. We got referred to an ENT doctor at the children's hospital and diagnosed her with a tongue tie. Yes my baby cried, yes she felt some pain, but the relief we both got after that procedure was amazing. The difference though was that the procedure used a water laser, so it was quick, no burnt flesh, and her tongue healed quickly and I was able to nurse immediately after. I will say I'm grateful I spoke to my pediatrician first because honestly, she was the one who told me that the dentist I was referred to was just cashing in on it and she was right. It was going to cost over a grand unless you had dental insurance for kiddos. I definitely think a second opinion matters quite a bit in these situations.

    My son had a tongue tie. He was in pain all the time. He kept swallowing air every time he ate. My husband had a tongue tie when he was little so we ended up getting the tongue surgery at 9 weeks. Afterwards, he ate much better and was not screaming during every feed. However, the recovery was traumatic for both him and me. We had to stretch his tongue up so tissues wouldn't retighten 4x a day for three weeks. I could barely cope with the crying like he was being tortured. I still shiver when I think about it, but I know of no other way for my situation. I am sure we dealt with the repercussions of it in some ways emotionally, but he was okay and is doing fine today. My second son had a smaller tongue tie, but he ate much better, so I refused to put him through it.

    My daughters life was saved by the tongue tie procedure! She was two weeks old and cried constantly and wouldn’t feed breast or bottle she was loosing so much weight I thought I was going to loose my baby girl ! At two weeks old one of the many Pediatric doctors we saw those first two weeks. My baby was crying like always and the doctor miraculously noticed the tongue tie. That same day, we went to an ENT (NOT A DENTIST) and they clipped it (NOT WITH A LASER!) took less than two minutes and she cried for a few seconds then latched onto bottle and took a feeding for the FIRST TIME IN HER SHORT LIFE!!! saved my baby girls life!!! That being said , so many WTF’s about a DENTIST doing these with LASERS?? It should always be done by an ENT and only clipped never burned off with a freaking laser. I’m sure that WAS completely TRAUMATIC for MOM and BABY!!!

    • @Ayverie4
      @Ayverie4 2 місяці тому +17

      The laser produces less bleeding and supposedly less pain. Ask a big kid or an adult about their experience with it. Either way is valid IMO but I'm not sure why a pediatric dentist can't specialize in this either. All 3 of my kids were done by the pediatric dentist who specializes in laser frenectomies, and my first baby was losing weight like yours.

    • @christinemikhail7088
      @christinemikhail7088 2 місяці тому +9

      There’s no bleeding when a laser is used. It does smell like burning flesh because the tissue is in fact cauterized to prevent bleeding. It is routinely done in the dental practices because dentists understand mouth anatomy more than any other medical discipline, aside from ENT. Though personally I would make an argument saying that Dentist understand, mouth anatomy, more than even ENT.

    • @lotofhankins1
      @lotofhankins1 2 місяці тому +9

      You would have to understand the difference in an anterior tie vs a posterior tie. A posterior tie shouldn’t just be snipped with scissors as that CAN bleed whereas an anterior tie typically doesn’t bleed much at all.

      Also, it is completely fine for these surgeries to be performed by dentists. That was not the issue. I believe the issue was that the babies in this video didn't actually need surgeries. Yes, some dentists may not do the surgery properly, but that does not mean dentists shouldn't, that means those dentists in particular should not be doing them.

    I still have my tongue tie. Didn't have any issues being breastfed as a baby, and never had issues eating or speaking later on (just a slight lisp which I managed to reduce with speech therapy). The only thing you really need to look out for is that the child is able to put their tongue to the roof of their mouth. I am able to do this except for the very tip of my tongue, but I only corrected my tongue posture and swallowing practices later on in life, when I got speech therapy. By that time, my upper jaw had already grown to be narrow, and the tongue tie was also linked to my tongue thrusting habits, which caused an open bite. I plan to correct these things by getting braces next year, but it will never be perfect because my upper jaw has already fused.
    In short, a tongue tie doesn't always need treatment, especially if it's only holding back the very tip of the tongue (look up anterior vs. posterior tongue tie). BUT it is crucial to make sure the child is able to keep up correct tongue posture and swallowing habits in order to prevent dental issues later down the line.

      It was more so a mistake on my parents' part to not pay attention to my tongue posture and swallowing habits, as I am perfectly capable of placing my tongue correctly and swallowing correctly, with just a little more effort than others. They just never taught me about it, and my tongue tie contributed to problems that didn't have to be problems in the first place. Then again, they simply didn't have the knowledge.
      In short, knowledge is key. Every kid, tongue tie or not, needs to learn about correct tongue posture and swallowing. Kids with tongue ties may need a little extra help. When the tongue tie is so severe that they physically cannot do it, you snip.

    EVERYONE has this, otherwise you couldn't control your tongue, but being labeled tongue-tied the attachment is closer to the teeth and shorter, greatly limiting movement of the tongue.
    I suffered from this since birth (not knowing what it was), then in my twenties a dentist informed me & then performed this procedure while I was also getting some extensive dental work done. I'm so thankful because it helped me drastically......beforehand I had speech impediments, a high risk of choking, & as a wind instruments musician, I had restricted embouchure that limited my success. While I didn't feel the procedure bc my mouth was numb in preparation for the dental work, the recovery & healing of it was very, very painful & seemed to take forever.

    I am a speech language pathologist. Ankyloglossia (tongue tie) does, and can, negatively impact feeding and speech. So if the case is severe enough, parents should seek out a doctor to assess and perform the procedure (I wouldn’t use a dentist). If they decide against it, no amount of therapy is going to overcome what is structural: limited tongue mobility due to the shortened frenum. It is worth it when done by the right expert.

Since it didn't cause a speech impediment or other issues, I've never had mine released (in fact, when I asked about it, I was advised against it since it could introduce a speed impediment where I didn't have one). My maternal grandfather also had one that he'd never had released, and he was fluent in 5 languages with no speech impediments.

She could still not breastfeed after the procedure even with a nipple shield and trying an SNS. At that point she had already taken a bottle so it was a challenge to breastfeed. She had a speech delay even after the repair. In the big scheme of things I do wonder if she could have gone without it, but I would have always wondered if repairing it would have helped with breastfeeding so I guess it was the best decision at the time.

    My son was born with a tongue tie. I exclusively breast fed my daughter until she was almost 3 but I didn’t car as much about breastfeeding my son. Although I was wanting to establish the best latch for my son before day two of life. I didn’t care how he got his nourishment. I just pumped and gave him what needed. I happy as long as he was fed. The surgery was not an option in my opinion so as he developed his speech I helped him practice his speech and gave him exercises he could do with his tongue. I even taught him sign language to help him communicate with us. He’s about to be three in November and is thriving with speech and eating everything he can get his hands on.

    Also make sure it’s a tongue tie before having the surgery.

    I have seen those surgical procedures in school. Some people become overeaters later in life, and turn to tongue piercing to help curb mouth pain. Don't do it to your baby if they won't nurse. A bottle fed baby will feel just as loved by their moms, dads babysitters grandparents, as regular nursing does.

    My son was born tongue tied, I considered getting the procedure done. My 15 year old cousin stepped forward & asked me to not have it done ,because it left him with a speech impediment. Thank God I just pushed forward and fed him every hour until his tongue had stretched well enough to nurse. I latter had two more sons one with one with out . 6 grandchildren zero have the problem. I had a speech therapist work with my 2 for a year each & both spoke with out any problems before age 3 .

    I was born tongue-tied myself, but luckily it was so minor my only "problem" was that I couldn’t stick my tongue out as far as everyone else, my speech and eating was luckily unaffected. My mom was asked whether or not I should get surgery for it and she said no due to how minor it was, and so it persists to this day as a benign quirk of mine.

    My son had his tongue tie fixed with a laser at 1, and it significantly helped him. His speech improved, and he screamed much less, he ate better, and his motor control improved. Tongue ties can affect children in many different ways! I am so thankful we had it done!

    My brother and I r both tongue tied.
    My brother's was little worse.
    He didn't get the surgery until he was in his early teens.
    His speech improved.
    I never got the surgery though.
    Being tongue tied, missing a tooth towards the front (born without it, didn't exist as a baby or adult tooth) so I have gapping causing a lisp, being dyslexic and suffering from anxiety disorders (both weren't diagnosed till I was older) I had to take special speech and reading classes through our elementary school.
    Honestly I really wish I had gotten the surgery.
    Also wishing they had fixed my missing tooth issue much sooner too.
    It would have helped me out so much more.

    My child spent 33 days in the NICU because he would suck so hard that he’d stop breathing and his oxygen levels would plummet dangerously. He was barely eating because he’d get so exhausted while eating or would cry as if it hurt to suck on the bottle. Had the lactation consultant working with me but my boy was not going to be able to nurse.
    We were able to bring him home when the hospital was sure we knew how to feed him while being able to properly handle things if he had another breathing episode. He was home for less than 2 days when I saw the tongue tie. NO ONE at the hospital caught it, not even the lactation consultant who had put her fingers in his mouth to feel around multiple times. Just kept blaming his issue on him being almost a month premature. They had blinders on and my poor baby along with his dad and I went through hell because of it. Had the surgery and he never had another feeding/breathing episode again.
    Some babies need the surgery

    My nephew had this proceedure when he was a baby. My nephew wasnt able to nurse correctly due to a tongue tie and my sister had no idea. She was so upset and blamed herself for starving him and not knowing. But she got this recommendation from her PEDIATRICIAN and only AFTER there was a known issue. Never go for a surgery on a baby unless absolutely necessary

    I knew after I had my son that something was wrong with our breastfeeding journey. It hurt so bad every time. At 5 weeks, we went to the ENT and he got his tongue clipped. Instant relief. He’s 5 now and still struggles with choking on water. Hoping he’ll grow out of it.

    My daughter's pediatrician said he believed she had a slight tongue tie, but, in his opinion, he did not think would impact her feeding abilities but offered to refer us to a specialist if we wanted another opinion. I remember him saying children have been living with tougue ties for years, but he felt surgery has been overused now. My husband and I decided against it, and she thriving. Happy we didn't put her through that!

    My cousins doctor used his fingernail in his office when she was 4. No extra charge, just a routine health check. This was back in the 60's. She had to go to therapy to correct her speech impediment because it wasn't done before she learned to talk. Normally they would do this as an infant.
