- Episode 324: Welcome to more Truck Week content! Over the next few episodes, we will interview each team that took a truck on our Coast To Coast race from Jacksonville to San Diego. We are starting with the team that came in last place: the F150 Lightning piloted by Andreas, Dave, and Jordan. The F150 Lightning's trip was comfortable but had some serious unexpected problems. Listen to this episode to hear the inside story of what happened during the cross-country race.

I like that the best part of the trip was the journey rather than the destination.
That is why I prefer Road trips over flying when possible. I just did a 3600 mile trip from WI to AZ and back. One entire day was off Interstate see things I would have never imagined.
Big shout out for TEAM FOOD!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jordan has the official west Texas driving cowboy hat on! Even though it's on backwards.
Great job guys! You made your trip fun to watch even though Ford let you down.
The title of this video should’ve been “Dave, close the charge port door” lol.
A good EV road-trip food hack is to check for takeout you can pick up on the way to the charger and put in an order when you’re 45 minutes out.
You won’t beat Kyle but you may get those extra minutes back at the end of your life
I have had my 2022 F150 Platinum Lightning for almost a year and a half and 33,000 miles. It is an amazing vehicle. I have found that your comments are spot on. Keep on with your races, trips and evaluations. They are enjoyable and very helpful. The Lightning is perfect for us.
Have you had issues with your BMS similar to what happened to the F150 lightning in this race ?
"Battle of the chicks", Francie, Alyssa, Out of Spec Mom! Bathroom amenities will play a role on stops😂
Next race to Vegas needs to be the VF8, Fisker Ocean, Mach-e, Model Y and ID4!
My favorite team! Great job Team Food! 🍔👑
20% to 79% is about the sweet spot for the F-150. Plugging in below 15% is going to slow you down. If you want to "charger hop" with short legs, plug in higher and still go to 79%.
Driving the Ford "Kyle Style" would mean plugging at the closest charger to the interstate as soon as you drop below 50%, and charging to 79%
Yes! Behind the scenes of the cross country race with Team Food 😉. 👍🏻
When 1 got sick , do u think it was sommin he ATE???
This is the most chill team, definitely the one to race with. 👍
Team food. Yessss!!
Nice podcast. Team Food downloaded some nice life memories
Another question....what was the total cost for all trucks to go coast to coast
25k miles on my ‘22 Platinum….. Can’t say enough good things about it. Like it so much that I sold my Gen 2 Raptor as I wasn’t using it anymore.
The Lightning isn’t perfect for everyone obviously but it is way more comfortable and roomy than a Rivian. Rivian is smaller and slightly more maneuverable. Pick what works for you
That's what I found useful. Which truck would we prefer.
Next time take Tom Moloughney's pizza oven and Keurig machine. 😁
You should do race with classic EV conversions from different companies 😊❤
I wouldn't be able to choose until the non fleet version of the 3WT or smaller battery pack models are out to see what the charging rates are for each pack size.
Thank you for the review, great recap. @Jordan....I think you may have had your cowboy hat on backwards...LOL
I don't know how you wouldn't have fun with Dave on the roadtrip lol
I like the computer interface of my Tesla. If the others catch up, then theyd be in the running.
I think the biggest unanswered question is how off can you get the bms on a lightning. Can what you guys experienced happen at 11 percent 15 percent 20 percent? Seems like it if the statement of it can take 30 minutes of sitting to recalculate.
Francie, I hope you will take part in the next road trip, some girl power would be great.❤❤❤
I already watched all 3 videos.
kW on the screen while charging is coming on 2024 F-150 Lightnings, photo proof on Twitter. Likely coming OTA to older Lightnings, and hopefully Mustang Mach-E.
Dave, the Platinum would give you 20 miles less range.
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth..,,..
Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
Waiting for it, The Chic Ride👍.
Future of electric vehicles is EPIC
As an 11Hotel10E9 member of the U.S. M966 Tow Armored Humvee Unit , May I drive an electric Hummer next time y'all do one those cross country trips?
Platinum online yesterday 3000 miles reduce to 54,000
Good value buy for someone.
Dave is right. While fun, this is just the wrong way to test these trucks. They should be doing local work. The real numbers of concern are how much they can save in fuel costs over time while doing city miles and charging overnight. That's it.
Very awesome video.....Just curious....what app did you use to navigate to the chargers
@ 36 : 33 well said Jordan … assisting th acceleration molding th future mental note made looking @ Ford !!!
If Kyle drives the Lightning I’m pretty sure he would’ve been way closer. He would’ve jumped from charger to charger using the initial boost… would probably have still been 4th but nowhere near as far back
I would like to know the price to charge the vehicles? I took a road trip to Chicagoland from Philly, 1802 miles in a Tesla 3. It cost me $33, since I only used Tesla DC Chargers once going and twice back. Tesla was about $.33 a kw, but I noticed EA or ChargePoint were sometimes 33% more higher priced. I averaged 4.5 miles per kw and even got above 5 miles on the highway taking US 30, instead of the Interstate 70 or 80.
I think the Tesla Super Truck got the best milage, best price per kw, and lowest price overall.
I expect the Rivian was the least expensive to drive at those speeds, except that Kyle was burning off all of Dave's free supercharging.
Im with Dave , F 150 for the comfort.
I had driven my ID4 11 miles past 0 once so I thought I was great at 6% and 12 miles range to drive 4 miles to the charger. Bam! It went to creep. I was able to use my level 1 at an AutoZone but didn’t know how much I needed to add. I took it in a couple days later to VW and all I got after 4 hours was “nothing is wrong”. All these brands are unacceptable in knowledge and communication of their equipment
I think Kyle had 30 stops, correct? In 40 hours. So the Cybertruck stopped about once an hour to charge for about 20-30 minutes? It would be interesting to know the "miles driven"/stop, which sounds crazy often. But also means a potential bathroom stop is never more than an hour away - and still you can get cross country in 40 hours!
They didn't charge for 20-30 minutes. They were stopping for 10 minutes or less most of the time.
A tank of gas is 5 min@@user-nf1cl7zj4x
I have a standard range lightning. I'm traveling from VA to GA soon. What profile should I use for trip planning (I don't have the NACS to CCS adapter)?
Gorilla Dave #1 fan club
Would driving slower, closer to the speed limit, increase your milage enough to offset one charging session?
You’d need to drive very slow, it’s a balance of charging available, speed of charging and driving speed
Did the F150 team think any of their slower Tesla charges could have been cable thermals and not the truck? Was there ever an attempt to do a Kyle and wrap the handle with a wet rag? For me comfort on a cross country trip is key so I’m with Dave - the Lightning over stopping every 50 miles in CT, but I’d still take the Rivian.
Unless you plug into a cable that is already hot, thermals shouldn't be a problem with the Ford charging curve. It will start at 450 amps for about 8-12 minutes, then drops down to under 350 amps. The Cybertruck will pull 600+ amps during the peak of the curve.
Kyle should have got half hour time penalty for blocking the second charger to maximize his charge then disqualified for not hanging up the charge cord. Etiquette penalty.😂
I'm not so sure they were really obeying the "+10 mph max" rule either. They ran a lot of stop signs too.
So driving electric is a 20-25 percent time penalty with all the hasstle and teouboe. No thanks.
