The entire concept of being like “that’s a guitar” and someone looking at you and saying, “actually that’s a fucking chainsaw” is so fucking funny to me
I think it's been mentioned on a few other Mick Gordon reactions, but it's definitely worth checking out his GDC talk. You'll appreciate it on many layers-- may be worth watching on stream!
sounds fun!! I love listening to composer GDC talks
also his makimg of doom track or doom eternal track.
That must be the one where he explains that some sounds are the result of the spectral representation of "666" or also the Doom Guy face, etc. no? It's amazing the amount of easter eggs that are hidden in the game soundtrack.
The music is dynamic in the game aswell. When sh*t goes down the music picks up and gets louder, and when you have downtime it mellows down which is very interesting to notice.
One of the really clever things that Doom 2016 did was when performing a finishing move on weakened enemies, the music would pull back and go muffled for that brief moment before coming back in after the animation was complete. The fully produced soundtrack pieces mimic those moments when you hear that little pull back before returning to the heaviness.
If I remember correctly the reason why all these songs have different tempos etc. is that in the game they work dynamically, so when there is slow moment in the game, the song is slow, and when there is high octane action going the song is going bonkers.
It's so amazing that the way she describes the music is exactly how the game play feels. Just both go so well together it's why I doom is so amazing
It's hard to pick one because all of Doom soundtracks are amazing. I recommend super gore nest
Upppppppp
2016 and Eternal of course
If you want a very strong example of Mick Gordon's range, you should look into the Killer Instinct 2013 soundtrack. Each song is tailored to a specific character/stage, and the amount of variety is huge. "Hinnamatoom" and "Polemos" are two of my favourites!
The game-rip version is so much crazier you would LOVE it.
I'd recommend "Meathook" from the Doom Eternal OST, that's another banger. Also, Andrew Hulshult makes good music like this, they got him to work on Doom Eternal's Ancient Gods DLC after Mick Gordon left. Andrew Hulshult's music from the games DUSK and Prodeus are worth checking out too, especially "Cables and Chaos" and "Dusk" from the Prodeus and DUSK OST's respectively. He also made his own soundtrack for classic Doom called "IDFKA" and did music for the 2013 Rise of the Triad remake.
Aside from those two, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance has some great boss music kinda similar to this. "A Stranger I Remain", "Rules of Nature", "Stains of Time", "Red Sun", "The Only Thing I Know For Real", "It Has To Be This Way", and "Collective Consciousness" are all great. And the last song there, someone found out it's 1:1 with "All I Want For Christmas", so there's a version that combines both songs out there.
ty for the recs! meathook is high on my list
@@emyoung please check also "BFG 10000", "The only thing they fear is you", "Cultist base", "Metal hell" (or "Kalibas, the sightless judge") -- that's all are from Doom Eternal.
Check out the "Hellwalker". That is one of the best atmospheric tracks I ever heard.
I'll add it to the list!
Holy shit dude. I've never listened to the whole soundtrack of Doom so bound to have missed some golden tunes and I just looked up that one and hawt diggity banana balls that was some heavy stuff. I got goose bumps. Good recommendation thanks for that!
@@anjairis best frigging menu music ever
@@emyoung When you listen to Hellwalker Their is a part in the song that uses a certain item iconic to Doom as a instrument.
@@emyoung I'd recommend listening to the ingame version of hellwalker because that version sounds more brutal than the OST version in my opinion
"more doom recommendations" - just add both complete soundtracks to the list. They are all soooo good
Listen Alex Terrible BFG Division vocal cover, it's Fking amazing
Literally just found this channel, I just love how it seems like nothing gets missed and you can share the pure enjoyment of the music with her.
I truly feel Mick's intention in these breaks to then drop the beat again is literally him saying to the player, "Remember, you need to breath". And when you close your eyes and put yourself into the doom slayer's pov, each one of those breaks is him remembering to breath.
Gladiator from Doom Eternal, probably my favorite from the OST
I always love listening to doom metal when i need to wind down and relax.
real
This is not Doom Metal
Your ability to explain actually super complex musical theory in super simple English is unmatched. I love it
ahh ty!! this is so kind to say, i love talking about music theory and always do my best to make talking about it in streams/vids accessible to everyone!
My choice is DOOM Eternal OST - Cultist Base!
Love these reactions, very dope to hear the perspective of someone who's knowledgeable about the little intricacies in the sounds! If I had to suggest something, it'd be Dark Colossus - Kaiju from Nier: Automata, such a nice, solid progression throughout the song!
I wonder what you would think of the Mechanicus OST. Its more ambiance but its very unique .
Nice reference
Fun fact: When initially making the soundtrack, Mick Gordon was requested to not use guitars for the music but he couldnt help himself and did it anyways but it was so good they didnt care (most of it was made with an 9 string and a literal chainsaw rev was used in the soundtrack as part of the music)
"The only thing they fear is you"
already posted that one!! first doom video on my channel:)
@@emyoung Haha nvm then, carry on and keep up the great work!
I really enjoyed in the build section with layering and the new melody (and in a lot of Mick Gordon's similar build sections) how it was a slow build until the very last couple measures, where it quickly accelerated into the drop, it's really interesting how it's paced to let you sit in this texture before pushing you forward into the main theme!
Glad to see more people enjoying the amazing work that gets put into video game music. Highly recommended "Hellwalker" from Doom 2016, "This is what you are" from Warframe and pretty much anything from the Nier Automata soundtrack.
So, when I was a teacher, I would play music while my students worked on assignments, and they loved this.
I've heard from @camelworks that some of the strange sounds in some of the songs on that album, have secrets. If you play them through a software that shows the sound waves, you can see the original Doom guy, pentagrams, stuff like that 🤘
Mick Gordon is king
Both have probably been mentioned before, but I'd put my vote towards "Mastermind" from Doom 2016 and "Meathook" from Eternal. Another honorable mention goes to "Disposal Unit (Imperium Mix)" by Jesper Kyd from the Darktide OST.
If you like Jesper, check out his Darksiders 2 stuff. It's crazy good.
My favorite musical genre, “chainsaw”.
Wildly different vibes, but at some point if you haven't already, you've got to check out some of the Halo soundtracks by Martin O'Donnell. Deference for Darkness from Halo 3:ODST is my favorite instrumental track of all time, and One Final Effort from Halo 3 is also phenomenal. Honestly all the music in Halo is incredible.
Great content, definitely subscribed!
DOOM Eternal - BFG 10,000 is a must!
Just seen a couple of you videos of Mick Gordon work on Doom and notice you are really getting into it that I think is awesome. Mick Gordon is a musician metal genius and love his work.
The "it's a chainsaw and a lawnmower, not a guitar" thing is circlejerked to hell but the truth is Mick only sampled the chainsaw sound from Classic Doom (1993) (Mick did NOT use a real chainsaw) in 2 tracks: Hellwalker--Doom 2016 and Cultist Base--Doom Eternal. Once you listen to Hellwalker (2:04-2:37, 4:00-4:46) you will be able to identify the chainsaw sound pretty easily. Mick recorded his neighbor's lawnmower sound and used it in The Only Thing They Fear Is You. To claim that Mick did not use a guitar in every single Doom track is kinda ridiculous as we can watch him play in BFG Division and Rip and Tear, plus how much he talked about introducing guitars into the soundtrack in his GDC 2017 talk.
Understandable! Typically fun facts like that get spread around communities, I was mostly making a joke about how many comments I received about it!
@@emyoung haha yeah chainsaw/lawnmower comments are present in every Doom reaction video 😄 Love your reactions and the insight you provide to the tracks
Can't wait to see more reactions especially to any Final Fantasy Music especially 14.
any fav tracks?
Swear those little pull out moments are just Mick saying, "Yeah, guys, it's a lot. Quick breath, aaaannnndd we're back." Lol
I think a track you’d really like from the DOOM 2016 game is called Flesh and Metal. It’s imo one of the best tracks Mick Gordon put on the soundtrack for DOOM 2016. Full of bamboozling and crazy sounds that will blow your mind!! It’s a must to react to!
Mick Gordon also made the soundtrack for the last Killer Instinct. Hard recommendation for the track The Instinct, especially fun to compare old and new version which are both on the soundtrack.
if it hasn't been recommended yet, Mick Gordon's cover of Song of the Partisan also rules
That hard cut at the end. CHILLS
yessss
oh Mastermind is an absolute banger! It's my car riding track on loop
good reaction not over reacting thx being genuine
bee boop
IIRC the main stringed instrument used in the Doom soundtrack was a 9 stringed instrument that was akin to a bass/guitar combo.
0:50 reminds me of old SlipKnoT songs
You could check out the OG Doom song E1M1 - At Doom's Gate. From the original Doom game
DOOM is merciless, unrelenting, brutal, the music needs to reflect that. Mick Gordon captures the powerful energy of the game like it's lightning in a bottle, and that adds to the effect the gore has on you, it feels disgusting and the music takes that feeling and turns it into pure bloodlust, I would suggest watching Mick Gordon's video about the music, it truly makes you look at the world of DOOM in a much different way.
Also, love the content!
Fr. Doom taught me how to pull out.
Periphery Drummer ❤
the music is like a gun or a war there are some breaks to recharge and the big breaks is like for the fear of the war and guns
hi em young i love mick gordon he is an absolute genius, he has perfect, i have played 9 hours of mick gordons music on a bass with 4 string and i also played it an octave higher. i really sorry for the way that he was treated. from nathan carroll
I don't know if you keep doing it, I really loved Hell Walker from the first Doom (and also loved Harbinger).
I liked, less goosbumps but really cool, Hell on Earth from Doom Eternal (but the Gamerip one, the ost is meh. Problem is it last 9 min, but it's really awesome).
For other games ost you can go listen Dead Cells I loved the soundtracks (the main screen really reflect the feeling about the story of the game).
I've played Outer Wilds, really great ambient ost (astonishing game too, if you have time play it, without web answers ! All on your own).
I'm playing Unrailed, the soundtrack is so thrilling with the main vibe, I love the Ghost driver one.
Keep doing it, it's fun seeing someone discovering your favorite ost 🤩😎 !
more great doom tracks to check out are meathook, cultist base, and hellwalker.
some tracks for doom eternal were also never properly mixed for the OST, instead being sloppily slapped together at the last second by an audio engineer at id. these fan mixes by a youtuber called koma will sound a lot better: super gore nest, metal hell, bfg 10k, final sin
and finally, after some disputes between mick and some of the higher ups at id over impossible deadlines (which is why the doom eternal OST was never finished), mick left and andrew hulshult and david levy were brought in the compose for the two story DLCs. there is a very apparent separation from micks style in their OSTs but i think they managed to deliver. some of the best tracks from them are blood swamps, world spear, and reclaimed earth
Another very similar work by Mick Gordon for Killer Instinct Reboot is Inferno, Itruly Believe that was the seed from all the Doom Music grew
Loved this reaction you should listen to capitalcorns version of this song. Its non stop headbanging
Why does doom music relax me.
Getting in a groove and then taking a step back
Yup Thats the music reloading😂
The composer Mick Gordon mixed all of the 2016 soundtrack, but only got the opportunity to mix a few songs from Eternal. I would prioritize those before moving onto other tracks, which will either be fan mixes or done by the sound design team at id.
Those songs are: Cultist Base, Meathook, Command And Control, DOOM Eternal & The Icon Of Sin.
Also, a few ambient tracks: The Betrayer, Welcome Home Great Slayer, A Cultist Prayer, Prayer Of The Diminished & Sinister. (My fave of the ambience being the last two. *Sinister* is fun lol)
My personal reccs are *Cultist Base, Meathook & Command And Control.*
BUT, another thing. People always focus on Mick Gordon's DOOM work, and honestly, for good reason lol, but he does have other work. Most notably in Wolfenstein & Killer Instinct. KI, especially, has some great stuff.
From that, I'd reccomend a song called *Warlord* . It's the theme for a skellybones man & it may or may not include an instrument (kangling) made from a real bone. Fitting, huh lol.
And once Atomic Heart releases Volume 2 of their soundtrack, we'll have even more Mick Gordon music to blast.
(Also, since you're at it with the FromSoft stuff. Lemme throw the *Blood-starved Beast & Cleric Beast* songs into the mix.)
RIP AND TEAAAAAR 👹🤬🤬🤬👹
"Hellwalker" is dope af too
Bury the Light by the amazing Casey Edwards plz!
"bfg division alex terrible" Mick Gordon's sound with vocal
Another good suggestion is hell Walker I believe? Very big and heavy but pretty slow. A nice change of pace
If you're a fan of heavy music then I would recommend Lorna Shore - To the Hellfire, it's an absolute must listen to for deathcore fans. In a similar vein Jinjer - Pisces is also incredible.
Marilyn Manson - Seizure of Power from Resident Evil
Check out Flesh and metal very brutal song. I believe the guitar tuning on that is like drop A0.
i can recommend the Total Annihilation OST. that are some orchestral epics from 1997! probably before you where born... oh god... when did i get so old?
What DAW do you use for your music production? I checked your YT page to listen to your music but all I see are reaction videos?
Les go cultist base gamerip🤟😎
You should try 'Charge Assault' from Ace Combat 7. It gives me chills each time
You should check out the soundtrack to Risk of Rain 2, I love the futuristic sound to it and it definitely makes you feel amazing having it full blast while playing the game.
i love that ost!
DOOM ETERNAL OST Main Theme by far the best
You talk about the little pull backs that the tracks do... I think of them like taking a breath. You're headbang away just going at it killing all the demons come upbfor a quick breath and plunge back in.
Yo should listen "Hellwalker" (menu music from DOOM 2016) People usually dont react to it but its awesome
It's way shorter but at doom's gate Is an amazing one
*Gordon Ramsey Voice* Finally some decent fucking doom music reviews
I highly- HIGHLY recommend Slave Knight Gael's OST from Dark Souls 3!
2:54 guitar *combined* with chainsaw, but here it is mostly just guitar
You should react to one of the vocal covers of the Doom soundtrack by Alex Terrible. They're awesome
I reccomend the super gore nest and the meathook for you
If this is up your alley, might I suggest literally any song from the Guilty Gear series such as The Circle or Let Me Carve Your Way
This song is so much Slipknot it's crazy
if you want to experience more Doom music you'll find alot of cool tracks in Doom Eternal ie. Blood Swamps, The Trial Maligog, Cultist Base and more.
Would love to see you reacon on Ace Combat Zero Ost - Zero [Digitally Re-Mastered Extended Remix]
you NEED to listen to cultist base !!!
If you like this, you should check out old Command and Conquer tunes.
I would recommend the killer instinct soundtrack. It’s made by the same artist.
For run you should listen to the doom croosing. Its Doom and animal croosing
LOL
@@emyoung doom eternal and animal crossing was released on the same day, so it became a meme that whenever doomguy didnt kill demons in hell he chilled out with isabelle and that isabelle followed doomguy to hell to kill demons. The song is like 2 min long and will give you a smile. Let me know what you think if you listen to it
"its a chainsaw"
"Shit that sounds like other shit"
No its an actual chainsaw!
People heard "sampled chainsaw" and ran with it. There are absolutely guitars involved in the sound, the sampled chainsaw is but one of the layers.
haha I figured, but the hundreds of comments i've gotten talking about the chainsaw have been entertaining, it seems to be a favorite fun fact of the community
Other good songs to listen to.
Ace Combat 7, Faceless Soldier, Hush, Hero of Comberth Harbor, and Daredevil.
Mass Effect trilogy, Saren theme, Long Walk, the Fall of Earth, and Suicide Mission.
DOOM’s music is essentially Gen X’s “gotta cram 8 hours of work into four” grind set, while DOOM Eternal’s is the Millennial “I have ADHD, and I have four things that need doing NOW” thing.
If you can find a properly mixed version of Eternal’s “Super Gore Nest” you’ll understand EXACTLY what I mean
Doom hunted please)
Please react to Kevin Penkin's work. More specifically the Made in Abyss soundtrack. Cheers.
this song always reminds me of early slipknot.
For an actual Doom track, Flesh & Metal next.
If you are making your way through game arrangements here's my obligatory kingdom hearts recommedation as a fan. The orchestral version of hikari
Can we get a reaction for Bury the Light from Devil May Cry 5? That would be poggers.
Im new to your channel and I love your reactions. I'd like you to check out Mick gordon Flesh and Metal or Andromida The Pathogen Downfall if you can please?
ty!! I'll add these to the list
The DOOM 3 Theme is one of my favorites. its a shorter one compared to the DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal songs. but its still great.
DOOM - Harbinger is a nice tribute to DOOM 3.
@@OMGtheykilledKenny42 Absolutely! Though I do love the faster pace of the DOOM 3 Theme over Harbinger. Down to personal preference though.
very slipknot
Dark Souls 3 Lothric and Lorian's theme is insane
one of my favorite bosses in ds3 !!
