one piece isn’t the only live action success we have had. in the west we have had Edge of Tomorrow: Live Die Repeat (which people don’t even realise is a manga adaptation); and Alita: Battle Angel. elsewhere we have had the recent Parasyte spin off live action series which was solid; people like the Ruruoni Kenshin movies; and i’ve heard good things about some others too.
it also wasn’t one piece that caused these new adaptations to be announced. live action one punch man was announced 4 years ago, it was just recently stated like two weeks ago that they have finally went further in its production and found a writer and maybe a director (can’t remember). the live action Naruto movie was announced by Lionsgate genuinely 11 years ago, and had a major update in 2023, but for some reason people only started reporting on it when the February 2024 announcements came with the director reveal. and the live action my hero movie was announced back in 2022. im pretty sure we’ve also had a cast for that entire time too.
Speaking on the new Oscar submission rules, I think these new rules will make it more likely that countries will choose animated features more often as their official submission. In the best international feature category there have only ever been 2 animated films nominated, those being Waltz with Bashir and Flee. Both have very serious subject matters and are both from countries where not as many movies are produced. Often if a country doesn't make very many movies they will submit an animated film like with Boy and World (Brazil), Flee (Denmark), and the Peasants (Poland). I think in years past it may have been harder for an animated film to get nominated. But in today's movie landscape with animation in a more pomante place I think if great animated films of the past where to come out today they would be likely to get nominated. Films like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, The Wind Rises, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, etc. I do think countries fear picking the wrong movie. Lets say in 2021 Japan had chosen Belle over Drive My Car. If they had chosen Belle then Drive My Car would not have been able to win the category not to mention it was nominated for best picture so it had lots of fans including my self. This past year we saw Japan choose Perfect Days, which was amazing, and did get nominated but it wasn't in winning conversation. If they had chosen The Boy and the Heron it most likely would have been nominated and would have had a higher chance of winning. Japan was probably more afraid to choose Boy and the Heron as it is animated and Perfect Days just seems more like the kind if thing that gets nominated. I do think that people are starting to take animation more seriously which could lead to more animated films being submitted and nominated. Hopefully in the future countries will submit more animated films and support the fact that animation is not a genre and it can tell powerful emotional stories with great artistry. Not to mention it would be cool af if an anime film won the category.
