This is just like what Music Man did with the GameChanger guitars 12 years ago. The world wasn't ready for it then, and newer technology now allows this much smaller wireless tech too. Well done to all at Seymour Duncan!
Indeed. However, EBMM’s system was only available on a $3,000 guitar.
Here, it’s $149 ($130 on Amazon) and you can put it in any guitar with a blade switch.
Yet another stop on the quest for tone - looks promising! I love being able to audition changes quickly via Bluetooth before we lose memory of what the sound was actually like in different configurations - and no endless soldering 😊
Gotta get me one !
Only I need to hear it demoed with clean tones & at different resistance settings.
Couldn't hear a difference in this video.
Said it works with almost any passive pickups 💪
Amp sound makes all the positions sound the same.
Beat me to it
No Joke - what a noob - lost opportunity there
Sounds like a buzz saw the whole time. The girl in the official video does a much better job
Totally agree. These NAMM demo cats play like teenage boys on viagra 😅
@@BillPalmerMusic😂😂😂👏🏻
I'd love to see an interview with Seymour Duncan and Larry DiMarzio at the same time.
Music man Game Changer as a retrofit @ a bargain price!
Finaly, been dreaming of this for years! Just need adjustable highpass/lowpass filters for individual coils, and adjustable splits, then it’s perfect.
Dude. I really need this cool litle thing in my guitar. I'll give my money ti get this hyper switch. I love it. Thank you bro to show me that great product.
Good luck fitting a 9V in “most” guitars.
"Let's make things too complicated and then demo it with distortion that makes everything sound pretty much the same."
"OK!"
Lol my thoughts exactly
Yup
This thing looks AMAZING!
This is AMAZING!
No it’s not
This is pretty nuts and also really cool, I'd love to try one of these out!
Now that's cool!!
This would work good with studio people who are constantly changing tones to suit the people you’re working with.
But you really wouldn’t use this if you’re the guy who’s looking for a specific sound. You’d just wire your switch to do your thing.
It is a cool idea though.
It's a good tool for a builder who wants to demo different configurations.
This might be the biggest thing to happen to guitar wiring EVER! Pretty impressive to say the least.
I've got a 2003 American Fat Strat Texas Special (same as Lonestar Strat). I'm going to order this and neck and middle Red Devils for it. Never cared for the Texas Hot single coils, too trebly.
Wild.
Wow this is really cool. I have always wondered when something like this will come out.
There is that much dirt in the signal that tt is hard to hear any difference.
would've been somehow imaginable to buy for 80 bucks, but 150 is a bit hefty. I can get a good set of pickups for that.
Rob at GuitarElectronics invented a similar device (sans Bluetooth) about 15 years ago.
He’s a genius.
Beat me to it!
@@michaelnugent9758 bummer what Ernie Ball did to him. Rob got screwed big time.
Neat.
genius!
Cool but i hate app config stuff so not for me. I wanna get away from phones and screens when i play.
It's almost like SD were thinking of me. I have a Godin xtSA (HB-single-HB layout) with a 5 pos switch that doesn't let you have the classic Les Paul option of both humbuckers. This always irked me. The guitar is kind of a Swiss army knife as it is, plus I've already modified it with the SD Dimebucker set, so to now be able to wire these up in funky configs - plus my fave doublebucker position - just takes the Swiss army cake! TAKE MY MONEY!!!
Each position just sounded like the same fizzy mess 🤷♂️
This could be really cool for a single humbucker guitar, all the different options you could have
My first though. I’m generally a single hum guy and all of these options would be super cool
@@michaelnugent9758 A was thinking, maybe a high rated capacitor for a faux neck position would be cool…. Just cause yi can lol
Nice! This is what the Music Man game changer system should have been.
So this is the "game changer" idea from musicman....
Except this is a pickup selector switch you can put in any guitar. Unlike the "game changer" system which was only available in certain Music Man instruments.
@@randygomez9595 Correct but it's actually the same idea! (executed in a more convenient way)
@@kostasmarinakis1459 exactly. The problem with the Music Man game changer is it was only available in one Music Man guitar and one Music Man bass. And while those two instruments were quality instruments, the only real selling point was the game changer system. So for players who weren't interested in the game changer system, they had other real reason to buy those specific instruments over other Music Man instruments. Hence why they didn't sell well and got discontinued. This is a way more practical system because 1: players can try it out for only $150 as opposed to spending like $2000 on a whole new instrument and 2: you can put in any guitar you want instead of only being able to have it in one specific guitar. Only limitation is it's a 5 way switch. So hard to install in something like Led Paul with a 3 way switch. Next they should make 3 way switch version or better yet, a version with a foot controller you can store presets on. That would be a true game changer!
@@randygomez9595 You are absolutely right.. I am just mentioning that the CORE idea is NOT 100% ORIGINAL..
I hope this does well but I’d be surprised if it sold many units. Cool idea but most guitar players don’t go this in depth.
You should do a 10 way hyperswitch (similar to freeway switch)
that AZ Prototype is godly.
Vernon Reid photobomb at the end!
So it does what the triple shot did, just without having to flip the tiny switches. I'll check it out if it's not crazy expensive.
The problem with the triple shot is that I'm always switching it to single coil mode while I'm strumming by accident. This also gives you even more options by flipping the phase
Also those mini switches are quite fragile.
if you buy two of these for two separate guitars will the app remember the settings on both guitars. Please let me know.
Wow
But,,, will we ever be happy, the chase is more fun than the catch!
We Musicians are a fickle bunch😅😂
I want
They said they’d consider releasing the documentation so we could write our own app. If they do, then I’ll most likely get one. But I don’t need anymore hardware that is made useless by the app no longer being supported or other such issues. Also, I’m curious what happens when the battery dies. Does that just prevent the Bluetooth connection or does it prevent the switch from working?
Will it do series/parallel for buckers?
I just checked the user manual and yes it does. Many options it’s quite incredible. Unfortunately doesn’t seem able to put single coils into series or parallel with themselves though :/
Wow. This is right up there with robotuners. 😂
Cool but I still love old school 🎶
Should’ve used a clean tone amp.
I don't think this is really as special as some are making out - I'd be surprised if it's a huge success but it is arguably the best version we've seen. Ernie Ball had their Reflex The Game Changer guitar which had this functionality except it used a cable - and of course you were forced to use an EBMM. PMT developed their programmable guitar pickup control system which you could put in any guitar and does everything this does except you don't have the modern phone app.
They were cool, but even though the Guitar Max was cheaper than this SD system, it didn't become the standard or anything like it. This SD is $150 on their website and Andertons are advertising it in the UK for £200 ($250)... You'd really need to be in a position where a 5 way switch and switched pots and even mini toggles weren't enough to get the sounds you need. Maybe studio musicians with the right guitar could frequently use it - but I'm sure most would play around with it, find their favourite combinations and then never change them again, with a bit of time invested you could do this with your existing guitar. So then it becomes is it worth this money to add a bit of convivence?
Maybe if you have several guitars and this system temporarily lives in each guitar just until you decide on how you want it wired - maybe a tech could use it to demo the possibilities - but the everyday player I'm not convinced.
It's cool they've taken existing ideas and packaged it into a more user friendly offering, I guess just like the iPhone - not the first but packaged in such a way it became more successful than its predecessors.
Great tool for professionals... or newbies who are looking for the 'magic' tone improvement. Spoiler: it's in the hands.
The big problem is getting pressing cel fone during the gigi
So does it need batteries?
Has anyone had success installing into a Fender Strat? Without routing body out.
Seems to me it's built for the touring guitarist and/or guitar tech that wants to nail the sounds of their records in a live setting.
Cool. No one asked or cares mate.
@@lunchb0x1986 this is a UA-cam comment section. You leave your opinion in this comment section. You don't have to care about what I say but you obviously either care or wanted to start some s***. That's so cowardly to try to test the waters while being anonymous, first mate Guiligan. But sure, you can disagree if you dont like my opinion, just try to be more respectful next time.
@@lunchb0x1986 And you're assuming that people care about how little you care? No one asked you either, mate.
Pretty cool idea but i gotta wonder what happens in 10, 20 or 40 years when your phone OS is a dozen or two versions down the road. They really gonna keep upgrading a free app for it every few years, indefinitely? Seymour D isnt even in the business of software. That seems like quite a lofty goal for an experimental product. I know you wont need to change the config very often but it just seems like its gonna end up locked or bricked eventually.
Makes me want to stick it in a $79 donner then stick my solder iron in my eye!
Do it and post a video.
I'd be willing to bet my house that this will not catch on.
I don't understand such a hustle. Why don't people use the Brian MAY SWITCHING SYSTEM. You then would always have 13 sounds. And not going home, setting the App for changing the sounds, and then you still can use only 5?
Great until one day they discontinue the app and you change your phone.
100%
Generic high gain zone, makes everything sound the same.
Wouldn't buy just off the principle that their demo team couldn't even get that straight.
I would assume it sounds like any 5 way switch would thru your own rig
crazy...not my cup o tea, but it's cool!!!
Looks like they ripped off Music Man with their Gamechanger from 10 years ago, and made it a Stand Alone Retrofit System
Too expensive for what it does. I would pay $50- $75 tops, unless it can do things like save different presets and let you have like 5 banks of 5 sounds. If all you can access are the 5 standard positions whats the point??
Cool idea but not for me. Btw you can't tell how a pickup really sounds when shredding with full distortion. Seymour Duncan Pickups should know that more than anyone else.
Screw that, give me some push/pull mini toggle love.
Too much gain
Its a smart new product, but way to complicated in use. AND PLEASE: NO BLOODY DISTORSION !!!
You play clean? Nerd
how does it know what pickup you are using????
jesus not everything needs an app folks.
So now we are controlling our guitars and pedals and amps with bluetooth... ugh...
I can’t hear any diference. At least a big one. Just the same distortion all the time, almost the same sound.
Seriously, why use a guitar with way too much distortion for this demo? Totally unable to hear the effect of the switch.. 🤦♂
Great. Now, the Russians will be able to kill our cars and guitars with cyber hacks.😂😅😂
Great idea. But man there is a lot of solder there.
"install is actually solderless"
It is solderless but only kind of, because you will have to de-solder the pick up connections to the old 5-way switch before installing the solderless switch.
Very little soldering needed with this. Quite easy to install, and much quicker and easier to do than installing a bunch of mini-switches and things you'd need to get many of these options, and even then you still likely wouldn't get as many options as you can here.
So just to clarify. The unit they are showing has an excess amount of solder on the main switching out. Not talking about installation.
Looks huge may require routing of the body/cavity.
I want my guitar to be free from such cumbersome technological advancements. I can see this being integrated into the modern electric guitar design as standard equipment soon. Perhaps no smartphone needed, touchscreen on the guitar. Automatic tuners, NO INPUT JACK coming soon, Bluetooth Only. Fretboard lights up to learn to the notes to play.
Really cool but I will never put one in my guitar. The longevity is what I am worried about. For how long will it be usable? Ten years, fifteen? I have a 33years old 1990 Les Paul that exactly the same as it was in 1957. Let's not introduce programmed obsolescence in the guitar world. We already have this silly amps with all the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi solutions. No thanks
I don't know man, I don't know
Sorry guys but please re-record this demo. Its a shockingly bad demo of a great idea.
It's a quickly done interview at a live booth with no professional sound mixing/recording going on, done on the spot. There will be plenty of well-recorded examples out there before long with proper mic'ing and using different amps, settings, etc. This is just a quick show-and-tell kind of video from the NAMM show explaining the product, not a proper "demo". Go check out Duncan's YT page where they have a series of more detailed videos where you can see and hear the switch being used in a more controlled environment.
I only need volume up or down. that thing is overboard. I dont like.
I truly don't get it..... Gibson made the robot tuner guitar that was supposed to take place of all your guitars.... only nobody wants that, they want multiple guitars and they want to play them all... Yet here we are again with another major manufacturer trying to do the same thing.... absolutely nobody asked for this and no real players are gonna buy um. Anyone who would modify their guitars already has multiple guitars, and no coil split les paul is ever gonna sound as good as a strat, and no single coil with all the mid boost in the world is ever gonna sound like a PAF. This isn't solving a problem, its just creating noise. I'm a little disappointed by this, I honestly have questions about the quality of all Seymour Duncan products if this is a reflection of their understanding of the market... there could not be more room for innovation in an industry that pretty much has stagnated since 1970, yet all we get is the same crap packaged differently.... I mean stewmac makes a 10way switch, why wouldn't people who want this just buy that instead and say fuck a battery and a cell phone? Theres so many ways to accomplish these things with way more simple and effective solutions.... I'm truly flabbergasted that they chose to pursue this idea and I can't help but judge the entire company based on this pitiful attempt at innovation..... nobody that plays guitar wants to have to use their phone to play.... these companies need to hire real players to protect them from making themselves look this bad.
Fat pass.
This will fall like the robo tuner's, it's like that bud light ad not a true pickup!
Way to make something completely non political political
Omg I don’t want that!
Awful intro.
They all sounded the same
No Epiphone or Fenders so no on NAMM
Epiphone is trash
Stop it ! When's things are not broke don't try and fix them .
Horrible guitar sound...
Seymour duncan not losing out to Fishman
Really?, opening with shredding?. Its not the 80's, and someone needs to tell all booth guitarists.....
This will flop.. people like there guitars the old fation way not with all this tech crap
