Now, if Fishman would come out with something similar, that would work with their active electronics. You have the high frequency tilt, gain reduction, and multiple voices along with coil splitting options. Having something like this available like that would be amaze balls. Instead of needing 64 switches installed on your guitar. Throw in a parametric equalizer, and the ability to customize the frequency range of your tone controls in the app and you pretty much got anything on tap.

It’s probably also a marketing thing, the technology definitely exists at this point. They could create a pickup that has no actual voice of its own, more or less allowing all frequencies through. Build the preamp with software that can be accessed through an app via Bluetooth. It could have a software-based 10 band parametric eq and that would totally eliminate the need for signature pickups. You could just download the artists eq settings/voicing or just customize your own. But, then again, they probably wouldn’t sell very many sig pups at that point.

    • @Sammywhat
      @Sammywhat Рік тому +1

@@Beautiful_Evil This reminds me of Fishman Fluence pups. They don't have a voice, per se, which is why they need a battery to activate them. And you are probably right about Duncan not selling many signature pups from then on. Although, you sell the sizzle, not the steak, right?! So if they market things correctly, we could see specialized pickups that work exceedingly well in this environment. I especially like your idea about the parametric EQ. I'd keep an eye on Fishman with this technology. Their pickups are almost already there. I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't working on something that allows you to "voice" your own pickups even as we speak! Line 6 and Positive Grid have some interesting tech that is currently doing stuff like this. Have your favorite guitar sound exactly like a '61 Strat, or '59 Burst with the flip of a switch. Pretty exciting times! Cheers mate!!

I’m a metal head and I watch a lot of your videos for knowledge and understanding of the Physics behind pickups(widing purposes, polarities, building guitars
,etc.) and this just convinced me to get this as I been contemplating but really didn’t see someone get in dept with this, and you just sold me to get this.Personally for example the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Brandon Ellis Parallel Axis “DYAD” is very high output humbucker measuring roughly 18omhs of Resistance very high output being a hybrid of a Custom shop Crazy 8 North Coil,PATB Distortion south coil, and a SD Warren Dimartini Rattus Tonius Maximus signature pickup’s Alnico 2 magnet bar (aka the RTM), what’s interesting is that it’s originally a Bridge humbucker that can be flipped where the North coil can be place closer towards the bridge and have the south coil closer to the neck and can be flipped Vice versa, and it’s a very articulate humbucker let me tell you.
and so I had the MJ make me a matching output Neck Version so I can play with the limitless tones and this “Hyper Switch” just made it a tone easier to check this out.

You can always have a battery compartment made. I am going to. I am not a believer that less wood equates to less sustain or tone. I built a Tele from reclaimed barn wood and sustain and tone for days compared to my 10lb les paul

    • @DanielBobke
      @DanielBobke Рік тому

@@daveg4236 I think adding a battery compartment is the way to go (not worried about removing wood), but that is no small task and most people do not have the equipment or the skill to do this properly themselves. The switch costs $150, but to add a battery compartment route and the wiring route would easily cost 2x the cost of the switch or more. This becomes more than a quick upgrade to add a new switch. In addition, when you are talking about most mid-range guitars costing in the $1000-$1500 range, you are adding 30%-50% of the cost of your guitar for a switch. That is kind of high in my book. This is getting into the realm of what it costs to add an Evertune bridge. Not sure the switch is worth all that effort and cost.
For guitars with a back cavity, this is less of an issue as long as you can fit the battery in your existing cavity. Strats and other guitars where all the electronics are under the pickguard, you have an expensive and time-consuming task ahead.

At first I was all fired up about this, but after reading the fine print they totally dropped the ball. They missed the single most useful option that you can do you a humbucker: a simple series parallel switch to get a real close approximation of single coil tone while still humbucking. Instead you get two parallel but out of phase options, normal or reverse wired. They both sound identical unless mixed with another pickup. A simple parallel option offers a light clean single coil tone with no hum. IMO a far more useful option than a second out of phase option that requires a second pickup to do anything.

Its a cool gizmo but I find keeping a phone handy for making tone adjustments to be very impractical. It solves the ease of installation problem and then creates a separate UI access problem. A 10-way blade switch from Freeway covers almost everything this does for $60 so long as you can follow a diagram and use a soldering iron. Now its all shift on the fly. I've recently installed one for HP90H that does all the coil splitting and results in strat wiring on one rail and every HH or HP combo on the other rail and its intuitive and makes sense. Let's face it, us modders will learn to solder eventually as a matter of necessity.

The fact that I can actually try out the ridiculous wiring schemes I've contemplated but didn't have the patience to engineer or execute, is like a dream come true. With any SSS configured guitar the question that needs to be asked is: what happens to hiss splutter and fart noise levels?
(I am a strat user) Agreed about progress but what is being tackled, hopefully withouit adding extraneous noise, is management of three single coil pickups in terms of priority, placement, phasing, sequencing (I mean changing 13 to 31 if you know what I mean or 132 to 123).
In early days I suppose that was done with 1950s-1960s valve amps and a three postion switch then "okay" eventually a 5-way position switch.
The possible combinations if huge if not in terms of numbers then in terms audible appreciation (hmmm = nice word!)
So say 3³ = 27 arrangements? Those can be phase reversed and I have always wondered what a phase reversed single coil would sound like in terms of intended noise and extraneous/unwanted noise.
For example if wired sysem means pup 1 is first and pup2 second 3rd pup third what would happen if priority was chaged to 231 or 312 or 132 or 321 or 213 rather than limited to fixed arrangement 123 - don't encourage me to consider volume controls on each pup as well 🙂.
I am not saying difference will be noticable or beneficial but I am curious and conclude:
This digital development is worthwhile but it is still in naive early stages in terms of user experience, controllability and usefulness.
    Interim conclusion:
This a lot more work needs to be done and if the end result is an even sweeter sounding strat what harm is there in that?
Then extension to humbuckers with additional (?) complexity of split coils/phasing and also onto Ibanez (eye-ban-ezz or eee-ban-eth?) HSH seems positively amazing.
    Thus endeth this exposition

When I saw this product, I thought that this could be a match made in heaven. Guess what? Yes!!! This switch shines with these strat sized humbuckers. FYI, I used 500K pots and 0.047uF caps. I have instruments that have 30 and 40 year old switches that work fine. $150 is more than I'd ever pay when I can hardwire a solid 5-way for 12 to 25 bucks and know it will last a long time.

This switch is really cool, and I can't wait to see the HSH config you mentioned.
The 9v requirement is annoying, but there's a much larger concern that I have. Namely, what happens if the app is no longer maintained. This is likely not a product that will sell high numbers so its continued production isn't guaranteed. Once the product is discontinued, it's unreasonable to expect the app to continue to be updated for very long. If a later iOS or Android update breaks compatibility, how is one to use the switch?

I put Triple Shots on all my guitars, as well as a DPDT phase switch on the neck, killswitch on the bridge pickup, and tone knob. I don't like having to use this product with a phone, although I see why a phone is used to facilitate all the switching options. If this could somehow be incorporated into a guitar (including HH 3 way toggle guitar) without the use of a phone and software, I would be sold on it.
Edit: Just find a way to add a Kaos Pad, Sustainiac, and Graphtech Ghost system with Floyd Rose as well. I think I'm looking for a MIDI controller that can also be used as a guitar more than just a guitar with lots of switching options.

I wonder if the back trem cavity has enough space for the battery.
you could widen and feed the battery cable through the hole that feeds the ground wire to the claw, and have the battery velcro'ed in the back for ease of access.
This seems unusable though in telecasters as i think the cavity is too small if you have cts pots, and les pauls sgs and fkying vs because of the switch type and its location and bring mounted through the wood etc. many other fender models guitar types for similar reasons as you would have to modify the pickguard or dremel the cavities to fit the battery, i.e the jazzmaster
Seems cool for strat types though

  • @cdeme123

I don't think I'd put the battery in a place that I have to remove the strings and pickguard to change it. I'd probably run some wires back to the bridge cavity in the back and make it easier to switch out. I would hate to be going on stage in 3 minutes and realize that the battery is about to die.
I just installed a Freeway 10-way switch in my Strat and love it. I didn't think I would use it much or that I was just falling for a gimmick. I also wired in a phase shift on the neck pickup to cancel noise when on the neck and bridge PUs. The tone is amazing and quite original sounding. So I have a total of 13 tones not counting messing with volume and tone controls. Surprisingly, I use them all! At $50, the Freeway was a better option for me.
I still like this concept and would be curious to give it a try. The more different tones I can get out of one guitar, the less $$$ I need to spend on guitars.

You said that it can change the taper of pots.. It would be cool if it could change the value, of let's say a 1m pot to 500k or 500k to 250k to mix and match pickups that normally wouldn't play nice together, such as when matching single coils and humbuckers.
Also, I don't know why one wouldn't want to implement this but... Pickup switching via witwls modo using Bluetooth is something I've thought about, to go straight from cleans using position 4 on a strat to distortion using a bridge humbucker, or vice-versa, with a stomp of a footswitch. I guess that might kill the battery faster... But if this thing can change wiring in the fly, it should certainly be capable, even if needing a little extra...
Oh yeah.. You could even flip the whole thing on its head and make the selector switch change midi presets on other gear.. No need to be near your pedals then!
You could the call it the LUDICROUS Switch. 😂

What are your thoughts Dylan on the lack of regular parallel settings? It seems in the manual you can only select parallel in combination with out of phase. Any chance you can explain why this as a choice in the design?
I can appreciate remembering the tone knob for session gigs for a certain sound. Most intuitively a Jazzy neck sound.
