I’m late but also I think it’s symbolic as well. Him having a bigger shell is very indicative of Raph’s character because he is more closed off and less open with his emotions than the other turtles. So him having a bigger/thicker shell is representative of that
I love the idea of a young Raphael being a little chunky and bigger than the rest because they'll probably have him just be jacked and the biggest when he's older if this is gonna be a series of movies. Plus it adds to the charm of them still being kids because I know a lot of people, myself included, went through that phase where they got wider but not taller until they got that massive growth spurt and everything evened out lmao
5:15 Yeah, I noticed that the weapons are not that polished or symmetrical. It gives off that homemade feel because splinter had to show the boys how to forge their own weapons. The hilts are made out of wood would therefore makes sense because you couldn't really get any traditional materials down the sewer. And the fact that the blades are not symmetrical and jagged shows they are not made of attritional Japanese medals either. It also shows how hard these guys train together.
I think the traditional Japanese materials would easily result in Jagged weapons if they weren't crafted with the high skill level of traditional Japanese method, but I get what you mean. But what exactly are the handle supposed to be made of it not wood?
@@OdaKa the other person may be referring to the tsuba and Kashira or the guard and pommel. Those are usually made out of some type of metal but in the trailer they look like they’re wooden as well instead of just the handle.
That actually is really amazing not only because it makes senses in universe, but historically accurate ninja home made a lot of their gear. A lot of Shuriken were carved from coins.
I absolutely love how they're leaning harder in the "teenage" part of the name here, for great comedic effect in the trailer, and probably for some nice drama as we see them grow into their roles.
I dig the glasses on Donnie. It's a good animated shorthand for him being a nerd and maybe a bit more innocent/younger. I've seen people complain about Mikey's braces but 1) it's a cartoon and 2) if he really needed them, I'm sure Donnie could figure out how to install them.
Their stylistic design describes them perfectly Leonardo - classic perfectly balanced Rapheal - all brawn no brain Donny - all brain no brawn Mikey - little gremlin of the brothers
I’m pretty sure Donnie also has a Sailor Moon sticker on his staff too. Love seeing Donnie be an anime fan. It’s definitely something different and could offer some funny moments depending on how they do it

I can't get over how much I love the color variations of the turtles, it reminds me so much of the 90s toys with the turtles all having different shades of green and yes Leo looks picture perfect.
Other that Leonardo being my favorite turtle, I have to say this is one of my favorite designs. It's so simple and neat and reminds heavily of the olds suits. There's something just satisfying and nostalgic about the design. I love 💞 it!!!

I really dig how the turtles each have their own distinct feature. Leo has his classic 80's design with a few more embellishments added, Raph has a bandana that wraps all the way around the top hemisphere of his head, Donnie obviously has glasses, but he also wears headphones around his neck, and Mikey has braces and is built a lot slimmer than the rest. This movie is going to be nothing but a joyride.

God, I LOVE everything about these designs! There’s pieces of all of the best designs from over the years, but they’re still completely recognizable. You can just tell that this entire project was a labor of love. I truly believe we are in for something special. And GREAT catch on the Gojo sticker! What an awesome touch.

I have never been a super Ninja turtles fan but have always liked them. This style, the charactizations and personalities of all the turtles really push me to this movie. Its gonna be good and I can't wait to see it.
I think these look great! My favorite turtles design is that when they look like their 1980 versions with light differences in their body structure and gear that adapts to their personality (like Leo being taller and Donnie using glasses).
I really like the new Turtle Designs! Out of all the designs, Leonardo is my favorite design from Mutant Mayhem. I even noticed that Raphael and Donatello has some features from the Bay Movies including the Red Pirate-Style Headband for Raphael and the glasses for Donatello. Really like it. Hopefully if this movie is good, this should give Paramount the opportunity to learn from that movie when they make a new Live-Action TMNT Movie.
I wonder if Donnie is the youngest given his voice and the voice actor being a few years younger than the others That or he's a late bloomer. Either option is adorable or hilarious. I like the designs. It would be great to see how they grow up.
I think they did such an excellent job of taking the classic 80s turtle design and modernizing them so they feel fresh! They're based off of them, but they aren't at all, for lack of a better word, goofy. The vibe is totally different in a way that feels new and fun and cool. I love that you pointed out all of the similarities of the wood in their weapons. I wonder if they make them themselves? Really funny to me that some elements of the Bay movie turtles (Donnie's glasses and Raph's mask design) are present here. I think it's honestly brave to say "hey, maybe that wasn't the best or most well-liked version of this franchise, but that doesn't mean we can't keep the good/interesting parts." And yeah, I like having Donnie with glasses and a few extra accessories, it feels appropriate with him being the gear guy. I do wonder about Mikey's braces, though. Where did they find a dentist? Did Donnie do those? He seems a little young for that lol.
5:59 The only reason why I’m not overly fond of Donatello with glasses is it plays to the trope of that’s what brainy nerd kids wears. Frankly, I’d find it more interesting if Mikey wore the glasses. I liked the goggles from Rise.
Donatello is just completely flanderized by this point, by making him a scrawny nerd with the glasses and nintendo controllers and other knick-knacks always strapped to his stuff.
I definitely think their wood/brownish red weapon hilts are meant to evoke the brown color weapons of the Playmates 1988 toys like the black belts+yellow initial. I can really tell they took the art team to study the old toys its really cool to see just hits different spot of my nostalgia than the 87 cartoon. I always felt the toys had a more vibrant style to them than the cartoons or even comics.
I really like the designs too! It's like the old school action figures came alive lol I honestly believe that they will grow up in sequels and so will the designs. Meaning, Mikey's head will shape up more like the rest of the turtles and Donnie's voice will break through puberty. Leo is pretty much perfect while Raph's tooth will fill in and/or match his headband like his brothers.
Not mentioned in the video but I LOVE the design of the baby turtles, though we only see baby Donnie and Leo in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment. Those will definitely sell well as plushies and give Grogu some competition.

I dont mean to be the downer but I hate these designs. I find it so frustrating that they already a perfect design with the 90 movie and they keep making these worse and worse. Especially giving Donatello glasses. Being smarter doesn't mean bad eye sight. And who the hell gave Mikey braces?
I grew up as a *Ninja Turtles* fan, but then kinda grew out of being entertained by them. However, I must say, I'm very excited for this movie. And yes, I hope they make multiple films and have the turtles grow up with each film.

Raphael’s sia blades are taped for a reason. A traditional one is not bladed and is round because it is a defensive weapon. This versions seem to be bladed so if Ralph were to put his fingers in between the 3 prongs he would cut his fingers so the tape is there to stop him from cutting himself

I feel like I'm the only one who actively dislikes just about everything about this movie. The designs, the animation style, and the comedy, they just all miss for me. I'm happy y'all seem to enjoy it though.
I honestly do like these, and I really hope they age going forward with more movies!! I really hope to see THESE turtles grow up into the ninja turtles we all know and love!!🥰
I personally love the new designs and I’ve always liked Donnie having glasses. I actually headcanon that all the turtles could do with glasses and Donnie is just the only one who figured out which glasses he needed
When I first watched the trailer I was a little thrown off by how young the voice actors sounded but upon my second and third viewing they grew on me. I think I was just so accustomed to the turtles being older
I love it nothing too over designed and taking different inspirations from different eras of tmnt while also going back to the beginning of tmnt for me it’s a perfect blend
I like how since 2012 Nickelodeon made an effort to try and make the turtles more then recolours of eachother and now where just back to square (ish) 1
I love the idea of them growing and changing, especially since they actually made the turtles look like kids in this film and I have a feeling there making more but I also love that when they hit an older age ( I’m assuming their like 14-15 in this movie) but in the next movie their maybe 16-17 and if there’s a final movie there like 18-19
Overall I like the designs, I agree Leo looks best, and with him being my favorite turtle, that counts for a lot. One of the weirdest things to me in the trailer was just how often Raph's mask/wraps looked purple/pink due to lighting. Definitely, an odd choice to use so many shots in the trailer where Raph's color isn't clear, hopefully that isn't too prevalent throughout the whole film. My only big issues with the designs are Mikey's braces and Donnie's glasses + headphones(if the headphones are going to be there all movie). I just think those are unnecessary and take away from the ninja aesthetic(though I get it is meant to add to the teenager aesthetic and I won't fault them for trying something)
I like the look of the glasses on Donnie, but I'd prefer if they didn't think they needed them on him to tell us he's a tech nerd. Glasses=nerd is such a pre-2000s schoolyard concept...
biggest thing i love about all of this is they LOOK like teenagers exclusively. no denying, not older not younger, they're in their mid-teens precisely. probably the best visual rep of TEENAGE mutant ninja turtles i've ever seen

Not into Raph's durag with eyeholes headwear, and Donny seems a little too dorky looking imo, like they tried to turn him into Futaba from Persona. I don't love the designs but they are certainly better than what we had been getting with the last several movies, so I don't hate them either.
I’ve always disliked the pirate-style headband because it takes away some of the contrast between the bandana and green head, making it harder to see the emotions in the eyebrows. Like you said though, Leo is perfect.
I find it interesting that Leo looks the most stressed out of all the turtles in both trailers. I’m hoping to see some character growth with him and him learning to grow into his role as a leader. In my opinion, I honestly wouldn’t mind some or of panic attack/freak out scene with him at some point in the movie because it would really emphasize the struggling he’s going through. I mean, assuming they are as young as 13, that age would be really difficult to hold responsibility as leader. It would make his character feel more realistic and relatable for teens under immense amount of stress (which almost all teens usually are).
i like how all the turtles have different designs and are different turtle species, and they tied the different species with different races as the cast. I hate when movies do the in your face "we are including you and we care" play to get money but this actually has care and Enjoyment to it. I also like how they are young teenagers and starting from the beginnings. The cast and voice appearances are insane, and hopefully they can string some movies together and maybe we get the Last Ronin as the finale.
The grips in the swords and sai are going to be leather, cord or some other material. I love the detail they have here. It looks very used and raw in nature instead of refined like an older more experienced application. Very excited about this new TMNT venture.
People on Tumblr say that the tooth gap got passed to this version of Raph; 2012 Donnie had a tooth gap, and so did 2018 Mikey. If Leo doesn’t have a tooth gap in the next iteration, I’m going to cry.
I'm more of a CGI fan or full 2D style so I'm not feeling this but I've been a fan since 1987 I'm guessing that this movie is made for the under 7 year old audience fan base to sell toys? So wake me when the rumored cgi adventure version comes out
I love the art style. But the characters... I don't like the turtles being proportioned like elementary schoolers. And April looks fine if she were a different character. I mean, call her a different name, and whatever, I'd be cool with it. But I'm not a fan of major race-swaps on traditional characters. For example: Miles Morales as Spiderman? Awesome, all for it. But I'm so glad they don't call him Peter Parker.

Can't wait to see how this new TMNT goes. As an artist and TMNT fan, I love how the characters have evolved over time. I will say though that Mikey and Raph's head designs aren't really my fave for this one. If we are to assume they are all the same species or turtle. Unlike in TMNT Rise were they are different. Granted I think from an animation stand point, this was done in order to give the characters a better range of facial expressions. Considering that both Mikey and Raph would be the two to get into the most danger/ shenanigans. Having a bigger or wider head would allow for more exaggerated expressions compared to what Leo or Donny could make.
Im friends with the VA for raph. He goes to my high school and used to attend youth group with me. He still goes to church every now and then, but hes busy, obviously.
Idk if I have a favorite head-shape but I really like how differently built the brothers are in general. I wanna say that was an early-mid 2K thing they introduced and I’m glad they’re sticking with that. I’ve always gravitated towards the versions of the franchise that leaned into their more individual teenage/brother qualities so I’m hyped for this. 😂 I don’t think I can pick a favorite from this bunch
I don’t know if it’s just me, but it almost looks like Raphael’s sais are repurposed garden tillers, just bent, flattened and sharpened. In fact, it looks like all of the turtles weapons are just things that were found laying around and shaped into weapons, though I don’t know what. Wonder what else was used to make them? Maybe more different kinds of garden tools? Considering a lot of weapons origins in history as gardening implements, and vice versa, it would be really kind of clever if that was the case.
I’m looking forward for seeing that flick because of my childhood. TMNT is the best childhood franchise period. I’m glad Paramount and Nickelodeon kept the depth of the franchise even staying original. I wanna make a new series to continue those half shell heroes protecting NYC from the evils of the Shredder. I'm liking the feel of the animation it has for me a Clay animation vibe going on in the textures , like that of Wallace and Gromit. Looking forward to another movie esp hearing Jackie Chan voice Splinter which at the moment we haven't seen in another trailer to my knowledge
I believe that the sticker on Mikeys nunchucks is actually a googly eye or eye ball sticker (probably has another one on the other side to match) and I think it’s meant to be a smiley face since there was what seemed to be a smile engraved in the wood under the eye sticker :)
I definitely like the new designs and they're all pretty adorable. I do hope there will be another iteration where they do the different species concept like rise at some point in the future. I liked how it played into their characters for Rise.
I hope this isn't going to be one of those 12 FPS movies. It looked kind of choppy. I can't stand 12 FPS. As for Donetello's glasses, I'm not a fan, but at least he looks much better than the Michael Bay version.

I think they did such an excellent job of taking the classic 80s turtle design and modernizing them so they feel fresh! They're based off of them, but they aren't at all, for lack of a better word, goofy. The vibe is totally different in a way that feels new and fun and cool.

Really funny to me that some elements of the Bay movie turtles (Donnie's glasses and Raph's mask design) are present here. I think it's honestly brave to say "hey, maybe that wasn't the best or most well-liked version of this franchise, but that doesn't mean we can't keep the good/interesting parts."
And yeah, I like having Donnie with glasses and a few extra accessories, it feels appropriate with him being the gear guy. I do wonder about Mikey's braces, though. Where did they find a dentist? Did Donnie do those? He seems a little young for that lol.

5:59 The only reason why I’m not overly fond of Donatello with glasses is it plays to the trope of that’s what brainy nerd kids wears. Frankly, I’d find it more interesting if Mikey wore the glasses. I liked the goggles from Rise.

Donatello is just completely flanderized by this point, by making him a scrawny nerd with the glasses and nintendo controllers and other knick-knacks always strapped to his stuff.
I like that they all look different. Instead of clones of each other with slight changes like some other versions
I definitely think their wood/brownish red weapon hilts are meant to evoke the brown color weapons of the Playmates 1988 toys like the black belts+yellow initial. I can really tell they took the art team to study the old toys its really cool to see just hits different spot of my nostalgia than the 87 cartoon. I always felt the toys had a more vibrant style to them than the cartoons or even comics.
I really like the designs too! It's like the old school action figures came alive lol
I honestly believe that they will grow up in sequels and so will the designs. Meaning, Mikey's head will shape up more like the rest of the turtles and Donnie's voice will break through puberty. Leo is pretty much perfect while Raph's tooth will fill in and/or match his headband like his brothers.
I love these new designs. They remind me of the 2012 TMNT look, which I used to be a fan of.
Not mentioned in the video but I LOVE the design of the baby turtles, though we only see baby Donnie and Leo in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment. Those will definitely sell well as plushies and give Grogu some competition.

I dont mean to be the downer but I hate these designs. I find it so frustrating that they already a perfect design with the 90 movie and they keep making these worse and worse. Especially giving Donatello glasses. Being smarter doesn't mean bad eye sight. And who the hell gave Mikey braces?

I grew up as a *Ninja Turtles* fan, but then kinda grew out of being entertained by them. However, I must say, I'm very excited for this movie. And yes, I hope they make multiple films and have the turtles grow up with each film.

Raphael’s sia blades are taped for a reason. A traditional one is not bladed and is round because it is a defensive weapon. This versions seem to be bladed so if Ralph were to put his fingers in between the 3 prongs he would cut his fingers so the tape is there to stop him from cutting himself

Raph is the second-oldest in the IDW comic line. Birth order tends to correlate with personality, and families of four tend to have their second-born child with a Raph personality. Usually, not always.

I feel like I'm the only one who actively dislikes just about everything about this movie. The designs, the animation style, and the comedy, they just all miss for me. I'm happy y'all seem to enjoy it though.
I honestly do like these, and I really hope they age going forward with more movies!! I really hope to see THESE turtles grow up into the ninja turtles we all know and love!!🥰
I personally love the new designs and I’ve always liked Donnie having glasses. I actually headcanon that all the turtles could do with glasses and Donnie is just the only one who figured out which glasses he needed
When I first watched the trailer I was a little thrown off by how young the voice actors sounded but upon my second and third viewing they grew on me. I think I was just so accustomed to the turtles being older
I don’t know if I’m right, but it looks like Mikey put googly eyes on his nunchucks and carved a smiley face into it. If so, that’s pretty funny.
I love it nothing too over designed and taking different inspirations from different eras of tmnt while also going back to the beginning of tmnt for me it’s a perfect blend
I like how since 2012 Nickelodeon made an effort to try and make the turtles more then recolours of eachother and now where just back to square (ish) 1
I love the idea of them growing and changing, especially since they actually made the turtles look like kids in this film and I have a feeling there making more but I also love that when they hit an older age ( I’m assuming their like 14-15 in this movie) but in the next movie their maybe 16-17 and if there’s a final movie there like 18-19

Overall I like the designs, I agree Leo looks best, and with him being my favorite turtle, that counts for a lot. One of the weirdest things to me in the trailer was just how often Raph's mask/wraps looked purple/pink due to lighting. Definitely, an odd choice to use so many shots in the trailer where Raph's color isn't clear, hopefully that isn't too prevalent throughout the whole film.
My only big issues with the designs are Mikey's braces and Donnie's glasses + headphones(if the headphones are going to be there all movie). I just think those are unnecessary and take away from the ninja aesthetic(though I get it is meant to add to the teenager aesthetic and I won't fault them for trying something)

biggest thing i love about all of this is they LOOK like teenagers exclusively. no denying, not older not younger, they're in their mid-teens precisely. probably the best visual rep of TEENAGE mutant ninja turtles i've ever seen

I think the designs are nice. Very classic but with certain modern characteristics and each turtle looks distinctive from eachother.

“Pirate style head band” 😭 dude that’s a Durag style bandana (they did the same for don and Raph in rise, and in a new comic their human versions are black and Donatello is literally wearing a durag)
Not into Raph's durag with eyeholes headwear, and Donny seems a little too dorky looking imo, like they tried to turn him into Futaba from Persona. I don't love the designs but they are certainly better than what we had been getting with the last several movies, so I don't hate them either.
I’ve always disliked the pirate-style headband because it takes away some of the contrast between the bandana and green head, making it harder to see the emotions in the eyebrows. Like you said though, Leo is perfect.

Leo’s my favorite design out of all four of the turtles, the others are just okay
I find it interesting that Leo looks the most stressed out of all the turtles in both trailers. I’m hoping to see some character growth with him and him learning to grow into his role as a leader. In my opinion, I honestly wouldn’t mind some or of panic attack/freak out scene with him at some point in the movie because it would really emphasize the struggling he’s going through. I mean, assuming they are as young as 13, that age would be really difficult to hold responsibility as leader. It would make his character feel more realistic and relatable for teens under immense amount of stress (which almost all teens usually are).
i like how all the turtles have different designs and are different turtle species, and they tied the different species with different races as the cast. I hate when movies do the in your face "we are including you and we care" play to get money but this actually has care and Enjoyment to it. I also like how they are young teenagers and starting from the beginnings. The cast and voice appearances are insane, and hopefully they can string some movies together and maybe we get the Last Ronin as the finale.
also maybe when the turtles fight, they go in a "turtle mode" and get ready to battle and that's when their eyes turn white.
The grips in the swords and sai are going to be leather, cord or some other material. I love the detail they have here. It looks very used and raw in nature instead of refined like an older more experienced application. Very excited about this new TMNT venture.
People on Tumblr say that the tooth gap got passed to this version of Raph; 2012 Donnie had a tooth gap, and so did 2018 Mikey. If Leo doesn’t have a tooth gap in the next iteration, I’m going to cry.

I love the art style. But the characters... I don't like the turtles being proportioned like elementary schoolers. And April looks fine if she were a different character. I mean, call her a different name, and whatever, I'd be cool with it. But I'm not a fan of major race-swaps on traditional characters. For example: Miles Morales as Spiderman? Awesome, all for it. But I'm so glad they don't call him Peter Parker.

Can't wait to see how this new TMNT goes. As an artist and TMNT fan, I love how the characters have evolved over time. I will say though that Mikey and Raph's head designs aren't really my fave for this one. If we are to assume they are all the same species or turtle. Unlike in TMNT Rise were they are different. Granted I think from an animation stand point, this was done in order to give the characters a better range of facial expressions. Considering that both Mikey and Raph would be the two to get into the most danger/ shenanigans. Having a bigger or wider head would allow for more exaggerated expressions compared to what Leo or Donny could make.

Idk if I have a favorite head-shape but I really like how differently built the brothers are in general. I wanna say that was an early-mid 2K thing they introduced and I’m glad they’re sticking with that.
I’ve always gravitated towards the versions of the franchise that leaned into their more individual teenage/brother qualities so I’m hyped for this. 😂 I don’t think I can pick a favorite from this bunch
I don’t know if it’s just me, but it almost looks like Raphael’s sais are repurposed garden tillers, just bent, flattened and sharpened. In fact, it looks like all of the turtles weapons are just things that were found laying around and shaped into weapons, though I don’t know what. Wonder what else was used to make them? Maybe more different kinds of garden tools?
Considering a lot of weapons origins in history as gardening implements, and vice versa, it would be really kind of clever if that was the case.

That animation has me sold since it's the same kind that we saw in Spiderverse and in Puss In Boots 2.
I believe that the sticker on Mikeys nunchucks is actually a googly eye or eye ball sticker (probably has another one on the other side to match) and I think it’s meant to be a smiley face since there was what seemed to be a smile engraved in the wood under the eye sticker :)
I definitely like the new designs and they're all pretty adorable. I do hope there will be another iteration where they do the different species concept like rise at some point in the future. I liked how it played into their characters for Rise.

I hope this isn't going to be one of those 12 FPS movies. It looked kind of choppy. I can't stand 12 FPS. As for Donetello's glasses, I'm not a fan, but at least he looks much better than the Michael Bay version.
With all the texture it almost looks like claymation. The turtles look like they could be in the Chicken Run or Wallace and Groomit
