Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943 Gameplay Review

- I'm playing Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943, a real-time strategy game by Graviteam and Strategy First. The game features three campaigns (one short and two main ones, one for each side) set in the sands of Tunisia. Units are moved around on the campaign map, which then spawns battles (which cannot be automatically simulated) when opposing units get too close. Quick battles can be made by placing units in the battle editor, and smaller tutorial scenarios are also included. The interface is identical to Graviteam Tactics: Mius-Front: a lot of information with tons of icons and a bit unwieldy. Basic orders can be given to individuals and groups of units (move, fast move, covert move, march, recon, attack, assault, and defend), or further customized with formation density, smoke use, and other attributes. Specific tactical behaviors can also be issued (hold fire, unload units, fire in a direction), but the AI does a pretty good job micromanaging the units, choosing appropriate targets and finding cover when necessary. The command level system prevents spamming of commands. Like its predecessor, the game is very realistic: weapon ranges, armor penetration, vehicle damage, line of sight (including out of windows in each vehicle), communication methods (wire, radio), and troop morale produce a very plausible battlefield. That said, Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943 is more like an expansion to last year’s Graviteam Tactics: Mius-Front, with the same interface, game mechanics, and realism of the previous title, only set in a different location.

Game is like 5 or so bucks with all the dlc on steam right now. 90% off. For that price it's worth checking out for strategy fans.
Hey man thanks for the vid.
Agreed it may not suit some who like a more instant gratifying experience in a ww2 RTS! But once you get your head around the UI its more than what most RTS games are, its more of a sim than an RTS! The AI can and will surprise you at times! Its a thinking mans game and terrain comes into it a lot of the time! I just wish it had multiplayer To me my two cents is its worth every dime I spent on the graviteam series!
really looks good, seems like the other game same company.
realism is excellent
Agree with your review. I got several of the graviteams games. But they are to a large degree rehashing their games a bit and releasing them as a new game. Would have been better if they had a single platform and released DLCs for it. That way it would benefit existing and new customers a) smaller increment to get a DLC when already owning the game and b) new customers would also be attracted by the lesser cost of DLCs once they bought the base game.
Also I find their game lacks variety. The environments are very 'lifeless' and flat with very few details - perhaps a limitation in the engine. I saw some people claims that graviteam games are a natural progression for ww2 RTS players to move from Combat Mission to the gravitieams' games, but I reckon they are quite different in scale and intend. There are a lot more detail put into CB when it comes to the environment and it has a large amount of mods that helps enhancing it.
A bit funny how many of the most well known war games are all 10+ years old and have seen any real upgrades in their core engines such as CB, graviteam (steel armor, steel fury, their RTS games), theatre of war, and so on.
The interface isn't that difficult once you learn it. Sure, it weeds out the children, mentally challenged and similarly handicapped. That's the price of admittance . This game isn't a clickfest for the masses.
100% agree, the UI kills this series.
PS: U compare this to Steel Division? That is like comparing chess with counter strike, dont u think :-)
I like counter-strike better than chess :)
The UI looks WAY better than Operation Star.

i'm from Tunisia !!!!
Hi james, great review. I've played both graviteam tactics games and was surprised to learn of this game was getting published by Strategy First and not Graviteam themselves.
Would you say this game was worth the price for a fan of the series? And also will it run on a system that can run Mius Front with no issues as the reccomended specs seem rather beefy compared to the games predecessor.
Depends on if you mind spending $40 on one new campaign map and new units. Personally, I can't justify the cost. It looks the same to me, so I would imagine it would run just fine if your system ran Mius-Front.
It is indeed a shame about the huge cost for so little content, I think i'll agree with you and wait for a sale, as £25.49 for 2 campaigns and 1 map is rather pricey. Oh well, back to Mius front.
I just got this game on 75% sale. If it weren't for the sale I would have probably gotten Mius front instead tbh
jeeze, just make a decent single player tank sim with easy mission editing, someone? Would be way more addicting and fun.
Steel Fury?
im am from the future to tell of a promising EA title, Gunner, HEAT, PC!
Now I'm jonesing to install PG2 for some reason.
I hope someone make game like Panzer Front for PS1 ,but still nothing, this is not better only graphic ....
