I have lived in Chelsea for over two years and never knew about the food market. 😅
The reasons I wouldn't want to leave London are the parks, architecture, museums, concerts, and exhibitions. The cultural life here is very rich.

That's pretty funny, it's a great market, every Saturday in Duke of York Square

I found it difficult to leave. I loved London. 8 have been living in the countryside in Wales for the past 10 years. There's very few options for buying food, taking public transport, places to meet friends, ways to make friends, little entertainment and amenities. I grew up in the countryside but it's so depressing bring somewhere and missing out on so much.

It is those little conveniences which I take for granted the most too. Thanks for the input Dee

If you’re a single man or woman who doesn’t ever plan on being partnered and/or having children and raising a family one day, London is alright for the short to medium term.
Long term, though, unless you’re extremely rich, you’ll likely get fed up. Imagine the shame you would feel as someone in their 30s or 40s who still lives like an 18-year-old student in shared housing. That isn’t a sign of success at all. Also, without a partner to share rent and bills with, you won’t last very long.
And much of the “opportunities” that mega cities like London, New York, Los Angeles and Paris seemingly offer are actually illusory or not available to everyone (they’re not meritocratic cities like people think; but I think more and more are waking up to this).
All of that said, as someone originally from a small town in the East Midlands, I will always have love and affection for my capital city. The friendships I forged with people from all over the world during the time that I lived there are the most valuable and meaningful things to me; and in a huge, global mega-city like London there is so much to do. Honestly, I am considering moving back there, even though I know it will mean at least 50% of my income will be spent on renting a dingy little room in a shared house.

The following 2 objective assessments help to shed further light on why London is so difficult to leave:-
    1) London and New York have been named as the only two "Alpha++" Global Cities in the world. An Alpha++ City (the highest ranking) is a primary hub for finance, commerce, trade, arts & culture etc., having direct impact on global affairs both socio-economically & politically.
    2) The Tokyo-based Institute for Urban Strategies at The Mori Memorial Foundation publishes the Global Power City Index (GPCI) which ranks cities in six categories: economy, research and development, cultural interaction, liveability, environment, and accessibility, with 70 individual indicators among them.
London has been named the top global city in the 2022 & 2023 GPCI rankings making it the most powerful city in the world according to the report.

I must admit, I found it incredibly easy to leave. As soon as my overseas friends left, there was nothing left for me... I'd left within the same month.

I get what you mean, makes sense that if your friend group is no longer around you wouldn't feel too much association with the city anymore.

@@CianLinehan And this gets to the heart of it really. London isn't a home, it's a bacchanalian stop-gap you leave your actual home to go to and enjoy for a few years while exploring life. Only British celebrities, politicians and the eternally lost remain in London their entire lives. The main benefit and also the curse is that everyone you meet is on that same trip. It's a place you only leave once you really start to see through the nature of superficiality and crave something real.

As an out of towner, I found it was rather a transient city. Was there for 6 years. As soon as my friends left it wasn't diffcult to follow suit. The increase cost of living made my exit simple. Of course I do miss the sights of London but I didn't miss living and working there.

Tbh my biggest regret is ever moving to London - I should’ve chosen NYC when I was 16. 20 years later I’m back to my original plan, not sure these 20 years in London were worth it, even tho I’ve had fabulous life in Chelsea & Marylebone. Plus American visas are so much easier and cheaper than the UK ones and I wouldn’t have wasted so much money on bureaucracy
