In this episode, we see which is the better RC car, The ELECTRIC Redcat Lightning or the NITRO Redcat Lightning.

Objectively, in 2020 when it comes to price, performance, maintenance, upgradability, tunability, etc. brushless + lipo is leaps and bounds ahead of nitro. Nitro had its place back in the 80's and 90's when the only option for electric was brushed motors with nicad batteries. But in the mid 00's when brushless + lipo became mainstream, nitro became a thing of the past.
Subjectively you should run whatever is fun, and I understand why nitro is a lot of fun. But objectively no one can say that nitro is better than electric.
Well said. I totally agree
Agreed for sure...
There is just one other angle in RC Nitro- 1/8th (or larger) racing- simply due to the run time. Even with lipos, electric races (including 1/8th e-buggy) don't last nearly as long as 1/8th nitro races. This obviously creates a totally different dynamic, which is just not possible with electric (at least for a while)
not only does it have an advantage here, but is also essential to that entire side of racing.
Nitro is definitely not a thing of the past hence still having an ifmar nitro World championship and many other competitions for them going 100mph in a straight line yh fun the 1st couple of times you do it but dude what a yawn fest. Speed run cars or stupidly powerful Electric rc's just wheelie and flip can't corner as well due lack of weight Nitro is much much more fun. The sound the smell you just get so much more feeling driving nitro rc yes tuning is a pain in the ass but that's part of it being a hobby.
E is way better than N.
@@charliebrown238 Love the double negative, cheers and enjoy the hobby no matter what the power may be.
Electric is nice cuz you don't need fuel or a drill to start it but nitro sounds so nice
Agreed
Recently EU basicly banned nitro rc's by applying a ban on nithrometane concentrated above 16%.

Nitro sounds just like ur driving a real car. But electric is so easy
The World record for Nitro RC 125MPH. The World record for electric RC 202.02mph
I’ve seen that. So cool.
You are way off now mate record nitro is about 195 mph
@@rickouwendijk2695 Have not heard that news. Where did you see it?
@@rickouwendijk2695 Probably one of those cable cars
@@rickouwendijk2695 official 85.66 mph www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/fastest-internal-combustion-engine-powered-remote-controlled-model-car-(rc)
Gotta love 2 speed transmission 🤤
I drive electric but after listening to this, would definitely be getting a nitro. That sweet sound!
I highly recommend it.
U can get a thing that makes it sound like u have a real engine
Nitro gas is a little expensive
I'm my experience nitro cars break down all the time once they're a month old
@@esotericman22 that just means you don't know how to tune.
When you do electric rc videos you put background music... but when you do nitro videos you don't need background music! The engine sound is the music to your ears! Lol... yeah I know nitro goes lot of maintenance compared to electric... but hey maintenance and tuning is part of the fun where you get more involved and proud of your car... it is my personal preference though
Couldn’t agree more.
Hi
Cool video. Well, you know I have both nitro and electric. Nitro was one of my first rc cars.
I know brother!
Me too I love nitro I have electric but the only thing I have about nitros is RUNAWAYS!
Electric for inside, nitro for outside
Nitros always untune and it’s annoying so that’s why I like electric better I still love nitro tho
@@Carguy-fn5nf I suppose it's like real engine cars vs electric cars. Electric for convenience, and petrol for loud noises and crazies. I find it hard to choose just the one..
There off road nitro carrs
Nope. It just depend on design of the car.. but I prefer electric. Less maintenance
Electric for both nitro for outside only
I am so glad I started out on nitro because it allows me the ability to enjoy both.
Exactly
Same I started on nitro and when I got to electric you don’t feel that same pressure of breaking something because the nitro experience gives you that. As in I wasn’t afraid to break something on my nitro and it gave me the confidence to drive better. Now that I have electric I haven’t crashed since. And nitro gives you a more hands on experience. With electric you just charge, plug and play. It’s not as hard and that’s why some people stick with electric. Plus nitro is cheap now that not a lot of people know how.
A brushed motor on 2s? That's an unfair comparison.
Just wait. I’ve got a plan to make it go like the clappers!
Was about to say my slash was clocked at 67 mph right out of the box with its included racing gear on a 3s lipo
My wltoys 144001 with brushed motor on 3s done 85km now I've put a big brushless setup and it's insane
Nitro vs brushless is an unfair comparison because brushless would win easily lol. The XO-1 does 100mph+ right out of the box and it came out like 10 years ago.
True I have an brushless motor running on 3s
I’ll be doing my own comparison between the Kyosho Inferno GT2 AMG’s, nitro and electric. I have the latter; the former is on order.
The electric GT2 is a blast and very convenient. It could be even lighter as electric Infernos are retrofits from nitro.
I wish there was a nice onroad track nearby to do either justice.

Nothing is better. It’s whatever you like. Some like RTR some like to build it,, Some like electric some like nitro. It’s a beautiful hobby. For me in my opinion, old rc running NIMH gave us the challenge to find speed. To be innovative. Nowadays you buy a brushless and it’s faster than it needs to be. One persons opinion.
I totally agree.
NITRO 🔥 POWER The smell, smoke, and grime …………oh and the sound of the 2nd gear kicking in. It’s just old school RC and it’s fun.
Totally agree.
RC car is gas station win
It's unfair to test on a brushed motor but if U like working on motors nitro is more interesting & the smells & noise is addictive !
Totally agree.
He’s trying to compare out of the box. Given the 2s lipo to give it a better chance of performance. He should’ve just gone with a normal battery to show how much slower it is. Though a 3000kv brushless motor swap would’ve been a good way to compare against the nitro bc many rtr brushless cars come with the 3000kv setup (no lipo battery)
Well that's not fair. Doing a brushed motor against nitro.. now brushless and nitro would be the comparison. Awesome video buddy. Thanks again for the content
To compare I have a revo 3.3 it is crazy fun and fast but my arrma kraton which is about the same size, a little bigger actually.. on stock electronics the kraton will stomp a hole in the revo.
The electric one did 43mph on a brushed setup. It’s the faster of the two now.
@@10thScaleGarage Not bad at all I have my 1/8 Nitro Hyper 7 hitting 65mph average top speed but few more little bits to do to it yet just luv nitro. Electric is fun for speed runs but need a long stretch for it Nitro is anytime anyplace fun slow or fast on road or off the noise the smell just can't beat it
“I felt it it went right over here” 😂🤘🇺🇸
Never found it.

Word.
3s lipo with 550 12t brushed motor and 80A esc is the fastest cheap brushed combo for 1/10 scale I’ve ever tried. Obviously my 5.5t brushless with 160A esc is obviously faster with 2S, but it’s about 10 times the price of the brushed electrics. A top-tier esc, motor and several best 2S batteries can cost much more than a whole RTR Kyosho nitro car. Anyway, if you’re a little bit lazy like me, not having enough time to maintenance the engine, a battery car is obviously the better option. I’m always looking forward to try the 1/8 scale hpi rally car, but I really don’t have enough time to take care of it😅

I only drive brushless RC. It’s the fastest and I have a need for speed. I’m happiest at 55-85mph, which my brushless RCs do all day.

Nice Comparison video 10th scale....

What I like about this video:
There was a grown man on an electric scooter filming at one point.
Dang right.
Just get a brushless motor on 3s, also nitro makes a lot of noise, it's a pain to keep it tuned, you can only run it outside, you will spend more on fuel, etc
Electric all the time for me
I have a few 3S brushless touring cars. They are a blast.
@@10thScaleGarage i know you do, you got a sweet garage 👍
nitro brings the r/c car alive, electric is fun, but it feels empty
well nitro has instant refill(no need to wait for battery to charge) and you also get MANY more hours of playtime. Also the noise and smoke that the nitro makes hypes you up. Keeping it tuned is not a problem. You just gotta play around with the settings when cold starting it
@@dieselgeezer18 i take 5 sec to change a battery and play i get tired, don't see the difference there
There's 2 types of fuel, one for the summer, and one for the winter.
And you have to be tuning it all the time, especially if your going to be using it at the beach...
My “winter fuel” is Natural Gas, get it? Ok. I’ll leave now
I like them
Wrong. If you want stable and easy tuning, just run 30% all the time. Get a nice base tune for the season and touch up the tune during the first tank or two at the start of the day and rip away on a medium plug all season. Lower nitro percentage will cause you to have to tune more to account for weather conditions IME. There are no warm or cold weather fuels or glow plugs for that matter. Nitro % = Tune Stability and Glow Plug Temp = ignition timing.
Its nitro for me. Ive seen nitro beat electrics and that was it for me.
It’s been known to happen.
Nitro is fun but the record for nitro is125mph. For electric it is 202.02MPH. 20 years ago, I believe it was RCCA tried to break 100 with a nitro and it cost them over a $1,000. Electric is less complicated than nitro. That's one reason nitro is not as popular as it once was.
I'm not sure you ever got the Nitro car completely wound out. Sounded like the rpms were still climbing when the assault with the wheel happened. Y'all from somewhere near Iowa? Great video, pretty much what I was looking for except I'd love to see a Nitro vs. a healthy brushless setup, actually comparing some laptimes around a course, to get a better idea of overall performance instead of only which has the higher top speed. To keep it as fair as possible, I'd shoot for a course layout with a straight long enough to allow the faster car to reach top speed and ideally stay there for a split second before having to get back off the throttle and/or get on the binders for a turn. Something as simple as a lopsided oval with one set of turns pretty much a hairpin and the other allowing a bit of speed to be carried would test both acceleration and top speed and give a better idea of which car is more likely to be faster around a race course. Just in case you were looking for any future video ideas. 😉 Thanks for doing this one. I'd love to see the comparison between practically identical cars except for Nitro vs. electric propulsion explored in more depth. I'm just wondering if given modern brushless motors and battery performance, Nitro isn't more about some of the aspects you mentioned, like the smell and noise and tinkering with the two speed than about actually being faster around race tracks than electric.
You’re totally right, and I would love to make a video like that. I’m still a small channel with an even smaller budget. I wasn’t even really trying to compare top speeds. Top speed was just one part of the comparison. In the electric’s defense, that thing did 43 mph on a brushed setup. The nitro has been faster, low 40s but in much cooler/ denser weather. I WISH we had an RC track close to me. (NW Ohio) anyway, thank you for the kind words, and I’m glad you liked the video enough to reach out. I appreciate it!
I have this redcat lightning pro on 3s.. fast as hell.. electric is just much easier to tinker wit.. plug n play
Nice! Mine is still brushed, but I managed to get 43 mph out of it
Faster isn’t always better. Maintenance more often
I totally agree.
Here here, half the fun of nitro is working on them ..
Starting out electric 3s lipo brushless and maybe one day I'll get into nitro but it seems like way more work than I'm willing to put into atm as a beginner
I have been an electric guy for a while and a few years ago I had some nitro cars and ended up selling them but now I have gone with nitro they are much more realistic and hands on type of thing sure the old ones can be a pain to get going but after you get it running there is no doubt that the relief and fun from nitro cars are worth it and I would definitely recommend nitro cars for anyone that is going to start racing
It’s cool to do something that requires skill, right? It’s more rewarding than electric. I love both though.
You should have picked a brushless version for a more far comparison
That rushed car did 47 mph with a brushed setup.
Had a nitro 1/8 buggy I used to race in unrestricted modified with a novaroasi power plant. Topped over 60 on dirt, 72 on pavement.
Would give electrics a run for their money. Plus nitro you have to have a bit of knowledge and understanding of basic mechanics, electric is just whoever has the most money if the fastest
I have hpi rs4 and evo traxxas tmax all nitro cant part with them and still is fun BUT since my infraction v2 and newest baby the losi 22s and a 16th scale buggy by traxxas (I gave to my girl)...a total of seven but will stick with the electric. My fiance is my sponsor. Shes dropped 2600 in two cars trying to get into dragging for money in tournaments in the southeast. Keep dropping videos my friend I watch and subscribed to your channel.
Nice! Welcome to the 10th Scale Squad.
i have a 16 year old nitro rustler took out the 2.5 and put the 3.3 in it. changed the 70t sper to a 55t had to cut the suport and make a new engin mount. put the large foam low-pros for the electric rustler. got it to do 70 mph didn't have GPS tracking so my pops rode next to it on his bike.
i just recently rebuilt it. new bearings, new servos and changed the whole front hubs for 12mm hex instead of just a stud and bearings.
new piston, sleeve, bearings and carb in the 3.3. 2.2 bead locks with some tsl super swampers. now im looking for a body to fit.
Holy crap! So it’s basically a Jato now!
I think I saw the wheel, it was stuck in his ear👂 😁. All joking aside, I like when the gas cars shift gears. But I am becoming more interested in the nitro.
It’s an addictive hobby.
This channel is awsome it give a tips
Thanks dude!!
Great comparision brother ❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
Thanks!
Hell
Ya bro bro.. gotta say. Ima electric guy myself.. try them again but with a 3a in the electric
For sure! I’ve got big plans for the electric.
the only reason I would get a nitro over electric is to be able to refuel and keep driving and not have to worry about the battery dying in the middle of bashing
Good point.
To be fair you could just swap the battery lol
Nitro makes a mess on race tracks with multuple laps an cars your foam get soaked with greasy semi burnt fuel an desintagade alot quicker. Alot more engine maintenance is required with Nitro an they are not aloud in some indoor rc tracks, colloge or in school gymnasium events. Lastly you can not water proof a nitro rc engine but u can an electric. Nitros are considered noise pollution in most subberb areas, they smell offensive so they must be stored outdoors an they leak fuel presenting a very minor environmental displeasure. Also they sound like string trimmers 🤗 loved this video tbh an Nitros look like alot of fun' she just needs underglow n lights
After being a nitro guy for so long , I just can’t find excitement in electric cars
I get that. Like gas vs electric cars. Yeah, some electric cars are sweet, but there’s nothing like turbo noises and giant displacement V8s.
Yeah i had a traxxas bandit years back but now i want a gas rc
@Brian Allan yea man I’m looking into getting my first electric and give it a go , any recommendations on good 6s cars or 8s?
@Brian Allan that limitless car looks amazing , thanks man
You tried 8s ? That shit is crazy especially the outcast for its size it moves fast af
Obviously Nitro but electric would be good for not having my neighbors be nemesis to me but the charging power for a lipo battery takes about 2 hours but nitro could keep going with fuel until you ran out and you could have more fuel to run on a nitro rc car just on a percentage to run the engine on. An electric cheats speeds up to 200 MPH with expensive upgrades, people don’t mind you running one at all, they like it rather than an obnoxiously noisy engine spouting noises everywhere to car goes with the engine…
Thanks for the brief explanation now I can decide which car to take😀
No problem!
Awesome video
Most small blocks are equal to 10th scale brushless systems,8th scales are a different story.
I run both but prefer nitro since I’m a gear head and prefer pulling out with something that sounds like my quad.
Btw the tune sounded real rich on the nitro
It was. These little Redcat engines nuke pretty easily if you lean them out too much. I’d rather change plugs than engines.
@@10thScaleGarage get an os in there and get those rpm up!
If your quad sounds like these it needs attention bad

Intro is my favorite
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it.
Nitro is a pain in the ass to learn but once you do, it's fantastic. more tunable, more visceral, between the smoke the feeling of reverberation you get in your chest as it wizz's by giving you that audible feedback clearly telling what the car is doing and, it can run indefinitely. And if you're a gearhead working on the engine is an entire hobby in itself. Batteries will always be a pain in the ass, charging batteries sucks, changing batteries sucks, more often then not too much bottom end and power, one pack is always different from the others, WAY more expensive and it's just boring in comparison (no noise, smoke, feeling). Batteries only positive is that they're great for beginners, short races and just messing around.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Awesome video. I'm betting a decent brushless setup would even things up a bit.
That car does 43 mph with a brushless system in it now!
Would destroy it

That was awsome

Lol the age old argument still relevant I see haha
I love both and own both but the EP models have that toy feeling nitro don’t, little combustion donk 2 speed gearbox etc
I’d sell my maxx before I’d sell my revo, there way more grunty compared to electric
We are all lucky to have such a great selection these days it’s incredible compared to few decades ago
Bless Traxxas too, there innovation, parts-upgrade availability, customer service, decent electronics and most importantly there durability

Love the two speed transmission I might be getting a nitro
Such a cool sound.
Redact is a very good brand in general.
But for rtr purposes, electric is always the best out of the box. For dragster/high speed traps, most likely electric.
But nitro is fun and rewarding bc it requires the owner to tune. The better the tune, the more power and torque you’ll make out of the nitro motor. Im not surprised that a halfassed tune for a redcat trapped nearly 37mph. Imagine a perfect tune.
I like how basic and simple the reviewer tried his best to make this vid as easily understandable as possible for newbies.

Thank you so much.
well i got a nitro buggy 1/8 cen matrix it’s old but i got a new motor servo air filter controller and a new igniter i tuned it and it rips next rc i want is the white and black fox traxxas truck
You know too do this right you need a 3s with a brushless motor and I think things will be different.
I own both eletric and nitro and I understand that electric is easier and can be faster but i dont think is exciting like a nitro car. I drive in tracks im not a parking lot guy for me nitro is best i dont need a 100 mph car for me is all about handling on turns and fast on straight and the sound of the shifting in second gear is amazingly satisfying
I agree! Nothing like the sound of a bunch of little nitros screaming around the track!
I like electric more because I had both and I had a LOT less struggle with the electric rc cars, but the nitro has a feel of a real car because of the sound, smoke and having to start it each time
Perfect solution- get both.
My Slash goes faster than the electric one
Sweet!
Love u from nepal🇳🇵🇳🇵
❤️ 🇺🇸
Now I want one of both 😂👍 great video bro
I fully support that decision.
A civilized comment section between Nitro and EV fans?
Impossible.
But for real though, I wish both cars would co-exist in the future and Nitro gets cleaner synthetic fuel.
All the people complaining about nitro have no idea what they are doing. Been using them for years . All my cars start on the first pull. Learn to tune them and learn to prime them before pulling unnecessarily a million times on the pull start. Run it dry after use and use after run oil. The noise and no downtime from recharging is a plus over electric. Not saying I had electric , it just can't give you the experience a well tuned motor motor gives you. Alot of issues is from running the motor to rich. Get a thermal temp gun to tune the high needle based on temp, response and sound.
Well said. Mine don’t necessarily start on FIRST pull, but I almost never have an issue getting them started.
@@10thScaleGarage a trick I learned was to grab the fuel line tubing and slide my finger across it towards the carb. do this about 3 or 4 times and you can see the fuel work it's way up the line it will push fuel into the carb and prime the jets. Leave the glow plug on for a few seconds then pull. Almost always starts the first time .
6-8s Brushless will smoke that Nitro!
for triple the price :D
Pretty much a any muscle car against a yota Prius, put brushless/6s then it would be a Tesla ,then it would smoke EVERYTHING:),,nitro n electric both good fun, smiling is the key🙂
Totally agree.
The electric one was for drifting so its geared down extremely!
Where are you getting this information?
I love nitro but i get electric too. Its cool just to add gas and back you go,but gas doesn't come back like a recharged batt.
Exactly
I began electric, once I went nitro the true speed didn’t matter. The real fun was the “real ness” of a car. Sound/smell/reaction/high rpm and shifting. Sure it can drive you nutz when tuning. And with all the brushless it’s not going to be the faster car. But I have been bitten by the nitro bug, and it has stuck. 👍
Same!
I do like this car
Me too
U could probably put the speedometer thingy inside the body of the car
Yeah, hindsight isn20/20
Idk why my uncle gave me a drifting car and I saw this on reccomend
Sweet! I hope you like it. I have other videos about drifting.
Original Nitro 4tec almost perfect condition drove 4 or five times then put on a shelf.Bought back in 1998! 55 mph 2speed transmission way back then!
I had the electric 4tec!
Nice
Thanks
Wow So fast!!!
I want RC Car😔
Save your doll hairs!
I would love to see you compare any nitro or real full size car to my 12s 5th scale 🤭
Soooooon.
Nitro ftw there is no better feeling than refuelling a running nitro 25mins after I first started it.
Just fuel and go 👍👍👍
They are a bit finicky to set up when new, but then it’s just start and go. For a long long time.
One of my nitros did a gallon + of fuel on the same tune, probably closer to 2 gallons.
The issues arise when a car is purchased and it has unknown faults. Most running issues are air leak related at either the carb, engine or fuel tank.
My Traxxas Jato and HPI Firestorm were fuel and play for a long long time. I bought a 2nd hand Thundertiger which has running issues and I was chasing my tail till I found the air leak at the engine gasket. It took me a while to find because I was new to nitro.
As a lover of RC cars, I don’t get a buzz from fixing/tuning them. It’s just something I accept. If Nitro was this massive hassle every time I took it out, trust me I would have given up on nitro years ago!
Buy new from your good local hobby shop and you will have minimum aggro, especially if you get them to tune it.
Never had a night show never interested in ever having one I prefer the electrics.
When it started shifting🥰
It’s a good noise.
My car control its special because my car control can charge if his low if want go anywhere
Nothing about initial costs, maintenance costs, fuel cost vs battery life/costs, other implications of when you cannot use nitro (indoors). But, yeah, sure it's faster.
I have a few other videos that address all those things. Also, it should go without saying that you shouldn’t run nitro vehicles inside.
so cool
Thanks!!
Man, this comment section feels like listening to my 89 year old grandpa. I had no idea the rc community was this backward.
The electric rc car in this video is something that could come from the 90s technologically lol. Brushed motor on 2s? Bro..
Electric is faster, better acceleration, better noise (no obnoxious engine buzz), less maintenance, cleaner to work with, more reliable, no fuel requirement simply plug in to charge, etc, etc.
The petrol stuff has literally zero advantage, something that doesn't usually happen when comparing different things, but in this case its absolutely true. Not a single upside to petrol rc cars. They are the past.
