we wrote letters to our future self in 6th grade. They were given to us in high school senior year. It was wild. I never knew at the time I was not straight. But I wrote this letter to myself, and told myself its fine if you don't have a boyfriend, if you aren't drinking, if your still going to church everyday. I just said don't do anything dumb and have a good job. Well senior year I didn't have boyfriend, was not drinking, still going to church, working a cna and was out. It was so weird to read these letters back and realize. I didn't change all that much even though I came out and found myself. I really just stayed the same person and just figured out I didn't want a boyfriend. I think this is a prime example of those people who say "you changed when you came out." No I didn't, I'm still me!! Wow long comment but felt the need to say this.

Oh Sadie, my heart. We all know as adults that it's okay. As a kid, it was lonely and confusing. But ultimately, it will be okay. There are people like you and me and all of us. There are people were different as a kid and, we are more than okay. We are happy with our lives. Thank you so much. Thanks for setting the example. And as Sadie said, keep being you...

I'm not gay I'm a man almost 70 and it amazed me every time with those videos of you two that there are so much similarities between your stories and my experiences in my live. I read in my late 40s before I recognized that it's better for me than to try to be the best in the eyes of my surroundings. At least what I thought they would expect of me to be best. This video should be used for every adolescent! So the can live their own live from the beginning.

Ooof, that letter hits home, especially when you said "its okay to just be making it through". This video inspired me to look for some old letters I wrote to myself and I found one from my senior yr of high school where I literally wrote "Life isn't meant to be perfect, so stop trying to make school perfect...don't obsess over a grade, that's not what defines you, you are a person with more than a report card to show for it." For me, I was the youngest in my family and having older brothers who played two sports and basically got a 4.0 in high school put some pressure on me to also succeed in the same ways. I was okay with that because I wanted to do well in school and sports, but I definitely put way too much stress on the little things, trying to make perfect grades in high school and at the beginning of college (super high expectations for 'success'). By the end of college, I had a group of friends and we all embraced that fact that some weeks we were really "surviving but not thriving" and understood that's perfectly okay. The irony is that we put in way too much energy into the facade of having everything under control despite feeling like things were being held together by a thread. Sometimes I wish someone had given me your advice and I had spent less energy trying to make others think I had my shit figured out and under control at all times - that whole acting like a duck thing where you appear calm on the outside above the water, but are kicking like hell just underneath the surface - is super exhausting and shouldn't be the social norm.

Hannah here- Becca this comment is so good and so raw and I so appreciate it. I think you and I were probably very similar growing up. Thank you for being so vulnerable and helping change that narrative that society tells us we have to look like we know what we’re doing all the time. ❤️❤️

Loved this. I also grew up in a small town. It didn't even dawn on me that I could be gay. I was a tomboy also. Felt fiercely devoted to my girl friends, but didn't know other girls didn't feel "that way". Went to college, then joined the navy and discovered ME. After that realized most of the girls I hung out with were gay also. Lol
Came out of the closet running at 27, now I am 56 and it has been quite the ride. Thank you for sharing your stories.

Thanks for commenting Karin! It seems to be such a universal experience that LGBTQ+ people tend to "find" one another even when they aren't even out of the closet yet!

In retrospect a lot what we weren't able to put into word in our youth makes sense.
But back in the days when I grew up, societal norms and pressure made being "out of the norm" seem wrong and you had to fit. I also used homophobic slurs , which I really regret.
When I started to realize that I could get feelings for all genders, it was also the beginning of the AIDS era and not being straight wasn't really an option.
I find it beautiful how much more welcoming the world has developed since then.

In fifth grade I went on a residential trip with my class. One of the nights in the girls dorm we went round the room and were expected to say what boy in our class we had a crush on. It seemed accepted that each of us would have a crush on a boy in our class, and every one of us said the same boy. I remember lying in the dark thinking.....this is dumb.

Aaaaaand I'm the woman who no one wanted to have a sleepover with (when I was a kid), and the one who has fallen for lots of other women and it's rarely been reciprocated. At 51 I still feel as though I'm not good enough (with a twin sister who is straight, married with two kids, and had an entirely normal childhood).

I totally did the just pick a boy to have a crush on rather than it stemming from any organic feelings for them. Sometimes it was a boy who my friends thought had a crush on me, sometimes it was a boy who I picked because they had characteristics I thought I wanted in a partner or more accurately was told to want in a partner. I may have had a "crush" on a boy in 5th grade because held the door open for me, and I was taught that's something men should do for women, so he was someone I should "like."

Dear Sadie, i had similar thoughts when i was young. The only difference was i knew i like girls and love them. In the 80s this was a big taboo especially being an asian, but my big brain told my younger self that i choose who i choose to love. Cause why not? I just had to keep to myself and lie about it till i am independent enough to do something about it. I am also a 5ft nothing person. 😅
