All ps3’s have full ps1 backwards compatibility, but only the original 60gb or 20gb ps3 have native ps2 backwards compatibility, some ps3 models used emulation for ps2 games but after the slim they removed hard emulation entirely.
@@Trapgranny64 It wasn't with the slim that compatibility was removed. The first version of the PS4 was 20gb and 60gb. Those literally had the PS2 component inside both GPU and CPU. Then they had a 80gb version that had the PS2 CPU but emulated the GPU. Compatibility went from 99.9% to like 95%.. Then came the 3rd revision that was still a 80gb fat ps3 but the PS2 components were completely gone. The Slim model came with the 4th version. 5th version is the one with the sliding door on the disc drive.
Lots of misinformation in this thread. All PS3's emulate PS1 games, albeit very well. The OG 60GB model (CECHA01) came with the PS2 GPU, the Graphics Synthesizer, AND the PS2 CPU, the Emotion Engine in combination with RAMBUS memory. Whereas later models (starting with the PAL 60GB release, CECHC01) dropped the CPU in favor of software emulation, but still using the PS2's original GPU that used fixed function hardware (like the fog in GTA:SA or games that used field rendering). That said, the sentiment of the original poster is entirely correct because all PS3s are able to emulate PS2 games through the PS2 Classics emulator, something you can leverage by jailbreaking your PS3 (and there are even patches for games available to make them work better), Sony could have easily done it themselves. Even more so on PS4/PS5 where the situation is the same, and the hardware is more than fast enough, but over time Sony's interest became lower and lower which you can see by comparing compatibility of the emulator used for Classics on the PS3 and PS4/5. The state of Classics is abysmal too, where in Europe you get PAL games running in a 60hz container and stuff like that. The same can't be said for PS3 emulation as you need quite some beefy CPU power to achieve that. In fact, we're not entirely there yet in terms of CPU performance for emulating the SPEs of the Cell chip and many games still struggle to get stable frame rates because of it. I have a 12900K that is able to run AVX512, which is the best possible CPU for PS3 emulation and it still struggles. The Zen 2 cores in the PS5 are certainly not fast enough to do this as well, especially since they lack AVX512 compatibility. Even if Sony wanted to achieve it, they could only do it in a smaller subset of games that don't leverage the SPEs as much. But it was mostly Sony first party titles that were putting the Cell to it's full use and so we don't see much interest.
right?, Xenia canary is MUCH better than Rpcs3, i played RDR and Gears of War trilogy on XC, and performance was great, Rpcs3 performance is all over the place, thankfully Lossless Scaling exists to make things smoother
@@carposp7789It's still too bare bones. I wouldn't say it's better than RPCS3. There are too many ps3 games fully playable at over 60fps to mention. Many of them fully playable since 2017/2018, it's insane. Xenia is only getting there and the UI and other features are almost non-existent.
@@carposp7789 You literally played 4 games on Xenia Canary and then decided it was better than RPCS3 as a whole. I could cherry-pick 4 games from RPCS3 that performed well and say that it's much better than Xenia Canary. Whether one is "better" than the other is case-dependent. For example, RDR runs fine for me on RPCS3, but I had horrible luck on Xenia. On the flipside, Midnight Club: Los Angeles wouldn't even boot on RPCS3 for me, but I was able to complete the game on Xenia.

Sony and ms have no interest in backwards compatibility they want you paying for their services and playing games they can properly monetize. Good thing we got emulation but we got to step outside of the current gaming ecosystem.
I only play single player games once, when the credit rolls I move to other games. I prefer remasters and remakes of these games because they will run well on the new hardwares. Sahder caching is not great for me because the games will stutter.
Wrong 😂 Microsoft is expanding its backlog of Backwards compatibility on Newer Consoles. They have announced it in March April, some 3rd party developers are choosing to remaster games instead of renewing licenses so that is what’s holding backwards compatibility back.
Wrong MS does care and has a very good backwards compatibility program. And is constantly adding more titles to the list as they work out licensing deals with old publishers.
Sony is finally making backwards compatibility availability. but it may take a while as the emulator they are using & making is still relativity early and they have Ps2 & PS3 Dev from the emulation scene to create and port games to this emulator Sony has baking. Microsoft doesn’t fully need to create an emulator as everything is in house. But it’s up to 3rd party dev to make games back wards compatibility as MICROSOFT HAS ALL THEIR First Party Games Available.

Remember the SNES announcement controversy, how older folks were furious that those hundreds of bucks worth of NES games no longer would work on the new hardware? Yeah, many do not, clearly.

With those specs, if a game doesn't run then it's not because your PC is not good enough but instead the emulator just doesn't run that game well. I have a Windows PC handheld similar to a Steamdeck as well as a big PC. My handheld runs Cyberpunk in 720p low setting at 50-60fps. On my PC I run it in 1080p high with some ray tracing at 90-100fps. That's a huge gap between both PC but The Last of Us runs like crap on PCSX3 on both computers. 10-20fps and visual glitches. With that game it's not about how powerful the computer is but how compatible the emulator is.
i’m honestly so incredibly impressed with rpcs3. i admittedly don’t check in and mess around with xenia nearly as much but it feels like the progress of rpcs3 is on another level to any other emulator. being able to emulate games as relatively recent as ps3 games on my pretty mid computer is surreal

7th gen games where the best. Most of the big AAA gaming companies aren't making the games they use too. They're too worried about pleasing a small minority of very vocal idiots to make good games anymore. Now they either release the game in a unfinished state and let the people that buy the game find the bugs with the pre-orders. Then they can push a massive day one patch that's suppose to make it somewhat passable as a finished game. Or they make it so unbearably obvious that they're pushing a DEI agenda. That overshadows any positives and it ends up like concord... My advice to the gaming industry. Go back to what worked, i.e. making games for gamers not activist.
Should mention you should be using Xenia Canary which is more up to date
right?, Xenia canary is MUCH better than Rpcs3, i played RDR and Gears of War trilogy on XC, and performance was great, Rpcs3 performance is all over the place, thankfully Lossless Scaling exists to make things smoother
He tried it
I did! Literally showed off me installing it at 4:57 not sure if you saw haha

PS5 barely has ANY games - I'll take older emulated games over that library!
Seriously. The PS5 has been launched for 4 years and it doesn't feel like it. No games, no excitement about it, nothing.
I'm not corporal but, nowadays games take millions of bucks to make cause the developers' salaries it up in the 230k plus if they hire high-profile celebrities to voice that's also 7 figures plus blah, blah. So that's why plus in today's climate you gotta Insert politics in it as well bc of Big Brother govt pushing agendas that take a lot of marketing budget.

THE PS5 HAS NO GAMES and Iam tired of pretending there is.
I went PC after the 360. Skipped on PS4/one. No regrets
@@Tonka-r6e Did the same. The E3 press conference's killed the momentum for Xbox for me, especially when Xbox One's E3 was all about media streaming etc. & nothing about games. I got a PS4 back then because my schoolmates all said at the time they were going that route, but nah they stuck to Xbox, and I moved to PC & been here since!
Thank you for sharing this PS3 retrospective.
It's amazing that even now, after putting in the staggering amount of work that it takes to get an emulator working, devs will put literally zero effort into a front end or consider usability.
RPCS3's ui is really good. But Xenia is almost non-existent and is dependant of front-ends.
It's because some devs that are like gods in emulation don't have any experience in making frontends. So, you either have to rely on a "third-party" frontend or learn how to read config files (lol)
@@frayans Or just not bother to use the emulator until it's finished. Sorry but in this year of our lord 2024, a piece of software without some sort of GUI is not finished.

Thank you for the video!
Xenia is a great emulator for xbla games but it requires a fairly powerful computer to run the more demanding games.
I’ve been thinking of playing the Banjo games through that for a while since they were the best versions. Any experience with those? Do they run well or are they buggy?

yeah, that was bothering me too. I thought my headphones broke lol
awesome video dude!! I've been meaning to check emulation too but never got around to it ^^
Sony and ms have no interest in backwards compatibility they want you paying for their services and playing games they can properly monetize. Good thing we got emulation but we got to step outside of the current gaming ecosystem.
Worse, now a significant part of their "new" releases are remasters of PS3 or even PS4 era games.
I enjoyed this video so much! Thanks for letting me know about Xenia Manager. I also love LBP and many other Playstation exclusives! I never thought I'd be able to play them all on PC! Thank you to all the nerds out there that made it possible!

21:30 I remember that statement. Again, boomer execs being absolutely out of touch with the gaming communities, always trying to push their "CONSOOM NEW PRODUCT, NAO!!" narrative, that treats games as disposable products you shouldn't invest time to and replay endlessly. Full backwards compatibiity was THE selling point of both PS2 and PS3 consoles, something gamers AND their parents were overjoyed. Remember the SNES announcement controversy, how older folks were furious that those hundreds of bucks worth of NES games no longer would work on the new hardware? Yeah, many do not, clearly.
Mentioned online support and showed Little Big Planet??? I'm interested now 👀👀👀
Also MGS4 taking an hour to play makes sense, that game is HUGE! I remember installing it and that took hours! (Of course over slow wifi as a kid)
Also also, you showed Time Splitters and I pogged so hard but it's a subscription and I was instantly sad.

Does it run well on the SteamDeck or should I only use PS3/360 emulator on my gaming PC? ( 55600X x 3070ti )
RPCS3 runs really well on the Deck
Not sure about something heavy like MGS4 and Uncharted, but stuff like Tekken 6, Tag 2 and Dante's Inferno runs just fine
PC. Deck can do maybe half of them at fullspeed
Ally can do most of the PS3 library well but overall the Deck isnt strong enough for the more demanding games
@ZimpanX I wanna play Anime and JRPGs PS3 games tbh. As for Xbox 360, I wish the Deck supported the Xbox app - then we could download xbox x series/one/360 games.

What about Desktop PCs will an i5 14600k 16 gb ddr5 rtx 4060 ti on windows 11 easily run these emulators and games ?
Easy, won´t have a problem since the laptop specs that they list are cutdown versions of the desktop variant always.
@@kurok1tenshi No way around that, can't cheat physics for the cooling.
i’m honestly so incredibly impressed with rpcs3. i admittedly don’t check in and mess around with xenia nearly as much but it feels like the progress of rpcs3 is on another level to any other emulator. being able to emulate games as relatively recent as ps3 games on my pretty mid computer is surreal

Like it or not, the vast majority of gamers are straight males.
