Translating professionally is so much more difficult than just understanding two languages.
It's very obvious to people who speak english as their first language that you've got exceptional language skills. Even though I speak German fluently, when I go to try and translate from German into English for professional use, my brain just about melts 😂 it's difficult.
I will leave it to the skilled professionals like yourself ❤ respect...tipping my hat to you good sir. 😊

I don't know why, but baby Slappee saying gögö gägä tickled me. Loved all the illustrations in this video 🙌

I actually like your teeth, esp the bottom row. Perfectly straight, vampire white teeth are soulless and passe.

A very informative video, Julian. I do think you missed a chance to establish pun dominance by not editing in some footage of you lounging on Finlandsfärjan (pretending it's a cruise ship) during the "Cruise Forever" segment, but well done regardless. 👍

Hello, Julian. I recently decided to try this career at the same time I'm trying to be a barista. I'm from Brazil and seeing that it is possible (knowing that it is difficult) to be a translator without a degree is giving me the confidence to try this type of work. Another thing is that I don't think it's worth studying in college for something that can be done soon by an AI, so anyway, let's try it. I'm liking your content and expect to see your videos more frequently. And have you met any Brazilian who learned swedish?

UA-cam put an ad for an AI assistant right after your video. 😅

Haha that doomed ending xD... but seriously wondering, do you already use AI now in your translation job? What are the rules around that?

Good question! I've received instructions to never use any publicly available AI to help with translations (because that would essentially teach that AI my clients' tone of voice, share confidential info, etc), but that's the only thing that's changed recently. Translators have used different forms of machine translations to help speed up work for many years now, but my work hasn't changed because of the recent surge of new AI shinies. Yet...

My dream is to earn my money subtitling (English > Dutch). My mother tongue is Dutch. Is the Cambridge proficiency certificate (level C2) considered a good enough basis for my dream job?
The subtitling courses that are offered in the Netherlands mostly focus on dealing with specific subtitling software.

Possibly, if you are specifically looking for healthcare realated translation work, I suppose it would be helpful. Anything official that proves that you have decent language skills would help, I'd say ^^

Hej, hej, Julien! I probably shouldn’t I make enough mistakes in English or any other language. For example, I still make mistakes in Swedish despite learning for over five years. And in Russian and French which I have been learning even longer.
