Amazing job. Plain and simple.
This was one of those episodes that emphasizes that comic book stories aren't just the escapism that comes from the exploits of extraordinary beings (I am sorry); they can be poignant character driven thought pieces. What a spectrum that is: the laughably camp to the moving sentimentality, and more so the vehicle of such a tale being one imagined to be both alpha and omega of the universe.

Avengers 4 ends with Thanos bringing everyone back to life (except the ones whose contracts have been fulfilled) and riding his helicopter into the cosmic sunset.

I honestly just wanted them to make a subtle joke about it. Like, Thanos teleports to earth and the first thing he does is destroy a helicopter, or something. I don't know, I just want fun easter eggs!
Hopefully his introduction in Avengers 4 is him riding a helicopter into New York like a boss, taunting the Avengers.

This is my new favourite video of yours. I love how you explored the Thanos's motivations and the contradictions in him and his beliefs really well and drew comparisons and conclusions from other similar characters. And that finger snap at the end was perfect.
J335H I do wish they'd delved a bit more into how his biggest foil, Adam Warlock, helped him come to his senses. Those two are the inversion of the classic comic book hero/villain dynamic, Thanos as the powerful conqueror of obstacles and Warlock as the wily and untrustworthy manipulator of people.

For giving me a 15 minute essay to explain why Thanos is one of my favorite antivillains. I have had friends ask why him and not a 'cooler' villian like Carnage. Because Thanos, much like Dr. Doom another favorite, is more than cool villains stuff. He is human. He is...just as right as he is wrong. He is complex.
He has a helicopter.
Fun fact : he’s also a Jew who survived the holocaust.
How you might ask?
Same way comics get away with all of their bull shit.

Of course, they would simplify it like that. Because one or two movies is not enough time to dive into the intricate relationship he has with life and death that was told over years by Jim Starlin in the pages of Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Silver Surfer, ect... comics. I knew that was going to happen I'm just glad they were to able to tell an almost equally compelling story.

It only took 200 years for the human population to go from 1 billion to 7 billion. So even if Thanos wipes out half the universe, it would only take a matter of decades for population to bounce back.
If he truly wanted to maintain balance, he should build an army of robot Cthulhus dwelling within the dark space between galaxies that culls all organic life every 50,000 years to prevent the rise of civilizations advanced enough to become overpopulated.

Thanos is basically Ivan Turgenev's Bazarov (the original archetype for both the Angry Young Man and the Nihilist) filtered through a lens resembling Darkseid because Roy Thomas literally told Starlin to rip off Darkseid specifically. The combination of the two makes for an odd mix, but it works.
This is why no one at Marvel understands Thanos but his creator Jim Starlin.

I'm just glad they made Thanos's motives more relatable and understandable in the film from the getgo than him being a guy trying to impress and get into the pants of a bone lady who's not interested, who eventually gets over her because of his bro, Space Jesus.
Yeah, it's like they cut out the middleman (middlelady?). They just gave Thanos Death's motivation instead of having Thanos simply be the means of fulfilling Death's demands because he's in love with her. Kinda clever.

LarryBonson Death can manifest in a physical form and absolutely can bang people, and has done (Deadpool). It's a while since I read the various Infinity comics so I can't remember if Thanos' love is goes in that direction or if it's more a sort of devotion. Probably changes with the writer like most things in comics. He certainly was jeolous of Deadpool at one point.
Mark Antill Death has never banged Deadpool in any comic, please list the issue#? Thanos jealous stems from Deadpool receiving what Thanos yearns, and that is appreciation.

I really think nihilism character is really hard to do well, but you just proof Thanos is a perfect example of this, it’s not about the meaningless is about the Everything inside that meaningless. I think another character that explores this really well is... surprisingly... BoJack Horseman.

I agree. I'm a massive Starlin fan and I feel like when other people write Thanos he loses his meaning.
Only person other than Jim Starlin is Donny Cates, obviously Jim Starlin is the definitive Thanos writer, he created him after all, but Donny Cates is a good successor.

It seems like while he believes nihilism it seems like his goal is utilitarianism is goal. Death of trillions in order to save countless more.
I feel like if you remove his nihilism then he could be actually from a certain lense be seen as the hero, he is saying that the many overweight the value of the few.
Like all good villains, he believes his actions are the right thing to do, while the heroes simply try to maintain the status quo of how things already are. It turns Thanos into a really interesting character!
NerdSync yep, it adds this kind of sick perverse feeling that what he is doing is fundamentally wrong but at the same time if we ascribe value to lives he is taking what he sees at the most logical and utilitarian route. If we say life has meaning then removing the human point of view it can be easily seen why saving trillions over billions is a defensible yet horrible plan. I think what makes him terrifying to audiences is the cold and unfeeling way in which he does execute his plan, a snap of a finger and bam he has culled the population. It's such an inconsequential action anyone can do it but when he does it the universe is purged unbiased of half its population.
It's terrifying but so interesting.

I don't understand why people complain about Existential Nihilism. Life does not appear to have any intrinsic meaning, but that is liberating. No fate or destiny. No absolute expectations. Even more, we can find satisfaction in striving forward in life. "We must imagine Sisyphus happy "
It is the fact that nihilism is false in and of itself. Purpose is subjective, and is neither good or bad. It is something we choose or do not. In the same vain, the Earth is destined to perish, as are stars and the universe itself. Destiny, by all means, is an unavoidable event or ending. Using that logic, we all have one, because some things are just inevitable.

To have purpose you must have a subject, but the universe is an object. Which means that there is no *inherent* meaning in the universe, since meaning by definition cannot be objective.
So, there is no inherent meaning - but, as I like to explain it, it can inherit meaning. We can suggest or suppose meaning to life, the universe and everything.
This is the very freedom that Umbrae (the original poster) is referring to, when they say we have no fate or destiny, we are free to choose or discover our own.
For this reason I would argue that what most people believe to be nihilism is, in fact, Existential Apathy.

@@KelniusTV At that point we pretty much have to go into the psychology of perception. From a philosophical perspective, no one can really say their perception is more real than another's. Schizophrenics, for example, are perceiving hallucinations and delusions with their senses.

Imagine if halfway through the battle in Wakanda in Infinity War, he had cried "QUICK! TO THE THANOS-COPTER!"
Only problems I have with infinity gauntlet would be the writers clearly write themselves into a corner at the end. Infinity gauntlet is the perfect thing to point to when someone asks "'what would happen if you gave the villain plot armor?".
Mata Nui ... No they don't. The entire point of Infinity Gauntlet is to illustrate how Thanos' greatest enemy is his own personal failings. It was always intended to be that way. It's not an Avengers story about punching da bad guy.
I read the storyline up until the part where Nebula steals the gauntlet and thats just what I ended up taking from it. I still think Thanos had plot armor though.

I was wrong then. Wait doesn't the gauntlet give him near omnipotence? The story kept saying omnipotence some things keep saying near omnipotence. Only reason I kept saying plot armor is because that's just what it ends up looking like when you a villain that powerful.
Mata Nui It absolutely does look like plot armor. The reason I'm stressing the point is because there's no way to write a story like this, without it looking like the "villain" is incapable of being defeated by virtue of the "script said so".
Because the fact that no outside force could defeat him, *is the entire point* .
Forget "power levels". Forget plans to cull the universal population to preserve "a balance". Forget the Avengers (they're only B-list minor characters anyway).
Go back and read the Infinity Gauntlet to the end, with the understanding that it is a character study of Thanos himself.
Of course he has plot armour. He's the protagonist of the story.

The friend who got me into collecting comics had a mad love for Jim Starlin, though his preferred series for him was Dreadstar (highly recommended, by the way). It was because of him that I picked up Infinity Gauntlet and became acquainted with the Mad Titan through the 1990s. And I loved every story Starlin and Ron Marz wrote around him.
Thank you for showing everyone a) what a cool villain he ultimately is (even above Doctor Doom, he remains my gold standard of a comic book villain) and b) how faithful the MCU version was to the original (enough so to earn Starlin an individual shoutout from the producers in the Infinity War closing credits).

Given the post-credits scene in The Avengers, where Thanos smiles after being warned that to fight the humans "is to court death", makes much more sense now.
Thanos needs to bring his helicopter to Avengers 4. It's not an option at this point.

I wasn't in love with Infinity war movie but liked how they adapted Thanos for the movie. His infatuation with death was always funny too me in the comics. Especially when he tries to make death jealous lmao
Chandasouk I agree with you on his infatuation with Death. It always struck me as ridiculous, and even with the marvelous explanation in this video, the fact that Death appears to him as a woman and that he's in love with her is the smallest part of what's actually meaningful to his character.
I personally really liked Infinity War though. For one, the fight scenes were amazing, and the interactions between the heroes from different circles were hilarious. But also I love (and for one in particular, love/hate) the ways they broke from the mold of traditional tropes. *SPOILER WARNING*
I mean, usually the hero usually never sacrifices a fellow hero or a loved one for the greater good, and always manages to find another way. But Quill actually tries to kill Gamora rather than let Thanos take her. Scarlet Witch actually destroys the Mind Stone rather than let Thanos take it. And what's mere, it doesn't work, and THE VILLAIN WINS. I'm personally a big fan of bucking the expected tropes and conventions, so I really like that personally.
Chandasouk He was trying to make Death jealous by creating life. Though that's silly to be seen literally, it is quite a deep dive into the mind of one who is obsessed with death. Though Thanos in the movie was great, he was changed because the audience likely would see a bag of bones, rather than the manifestation of Death in the Universe. I would've. I even hoped that the Mistess wouldn't be in the movie at all, because it does seem silly, looking at it literally, but just not... Literally. Lol

This makes me think that at some point this could be the over arching plot of Avengers 4. I've been seeing videos with the question, "Who will beat Thanos?" When in truth, that is the WRONG question to ask. No one is going to "beat" thanos. Thanos might, in the end, just sacrifice himself. The rumored title of Avengers 4 after all is "Avengers: *The End* game".

Akis Mou Arsenal was only able to blast Thanos far across the universe and not ultimately "defeat" or destroy him. Maybe it could decapacitate Thanos but not kill him. Although I wouldnt put it past them using Arsenal with the plot seeds planted. With Shuri having collected enough of Vision's data, we might see this character in some form or another. But no, I don't think Arsenal is the end all be all ending of this particular arc.

A fantastic video, Scott. I had no idea that the argument in Infinity War was pure canon outside of the Death part. The transition makes sense and also made me look at the Doctor Strange film in a different way. Thank you for this brilliant dissection of Thanos.

Yes! This is something that I cut out of the video. I had a whole section dedicated to his "REAL Origin" and it talked about Thanatos and Eros as both mythical figures and psychologocal concepts. But the video was long enough and that stuff didn't flow well with what I had written.

This is why i think no one at Marvel can write Thanos well but Jim Starlin.
I just want to say that, if any writer made Thanos interesting, it's Starlin. Under Starlin Thanos showed he actually has an interesting character, who is more than being powerful and evil, and actually has some human characteristics. Starlin's Thanos was actually respectful, reasonable and sometimes even humble and heroic. His intelligence may be called a plot device but same can be said for Doctor Doom and Batman.
Aside from Starlin, 90% of Marvel writers (with a few exceptions) think Thanos is this creepy guy who wrecks and kills everybody without a second thought, like he is a cosmic version of My Friend Dahmer. In other words, Marvel thinks he is just Marvel's version of Darkseid, while Starlin's Thanos is a completely different character with no similarities to Darkseid aside from appearance (Thanos wasn't even based off of Darkseid but another New God called Metron).
Steven Strange's comment too The Ancient One always felt more like an admiration of his fears, his actions always came from a fear that Nihilism was the truth and everything he did was pointless.
Also, I don't often notice the sound work on video's, but this video's sound work was excellent.

Bit of a massive stretch, regardless of which Thanos you're using.
Light is far from a nihilist, and his killings are not random and unbiased. Yes, they both believe that mass slaughter will in some way save humanity, but whereas Thanos doesn't choose his victims, Light kills people based on his subjective view of who does and who doesn't deserve to live.
@Tornike Tvalchrelidze Indeed! And "became" is the keyword. Too many people seem to think that Light was born evil, or that he would have become a vigilante even if he'd never found the Death Note. Truth is, Light was more or less a good person - especially so in the manga compared to the anime - but the terrible choices he made (without external influence from the Note itself, because that's not how it works) utterly transformed him into a wretch of a person. He's just way more interesting if you view him as someone who had everything and then gave it all up to keep his precious ego from snapping.

You know I like your videos, and they are very informative, but this one is just different. Its has a depth to it, and its not just your use of philosophy, (Which I always love since I am one of those philosophy nerds who loves to take philosophy classes, 93 credits back in the day.) Its the way this is edited, this is really an excellent video, thought provoking, the presentation was just a joy to watch. Great job, I hope to see more done this way in the future, every once in a while. Thanks.
