Dr Keerti Thiyagarjan talks about the "Healing time of bone fracture in Tamil" video that will inform the general public
The healing process for a fracture, or a broken bone, depends on the type and location of the fracture and the patient's overall health. In general, the body forms new bone tissue in the damaged area to repair the fracture. This process is called "fracture healing."
There are several stages of fracture healing:
Inflammation: Immediately after the injury, the body's immune system protects the damaged area and removes debris. This can cause swelling, pain, and redness at the site of the fracture.
Soft callus formation: Within a few days of the injury, the body starts to produce a soft, spongy tissue called a "callus" around the fracture site. This callus provides support and protection while the bone starts to heal.
Hard callus formation: As the fracture continues to heal, the body produces a hard callus made of new bone tissue. This hard callus helps to bridge the gap between the broken bone ends and provides stability.
Bone remodelling: As the hard callus matures, the body starts to reshape the bone to its original shape. This process is called "bone remodelling." It can take several months for a bone to fully remodel and regain its strength.
The rate of fracture healing can vary depending on a person's age, overall health, and the severity of the injury. It is important for the patient to follow their healthcare provider's treatment plan and recommendations for promoting proper healing. This may include rest, immobilization of the injured limb, physical therapy, and medications to control pain and inflammation.
The healing time for a fracture can vary depending on the type and location of the bone that is broken and the patient's overall health. In general, it takes longer for larger bones, such as the femur (thigh bone) or tibia (shin bone), to heal compared to smaller bones, such as those in the hand or foot.
Here are some general guidelines for the healing time of different bones:
Finger bones: 3 to 4 weeks
Wrist bones: 3 to 4 weeks
Forearm bones: 3 to 6 weeks
Hand bones (excluding the wrist and fingers): 4 to 8 weeks
Foot bones: 4 to 8 weeks
Ankle bones: 6 to 10 weeks
Lower leg bones (tibia and fibula): 6 to 12 weeks
Upper leg bone (femur): 6 to 12 weeks
Hip bone: 6 to 12 weeks
Pelvis bone: 6 to 12 weeks
