This is Judas Priest at their most metal! You definitely jumped into the deep end of the pool with this one. I think this song was in response to some criticism they received for their album "Turbo". They wanted to prove they still had the chops and could compete with Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc., and boy did they!! Their older stuff was more along the lines of Sabbath. Also, Rob Halford is credited with creating the "look" of heavy metal, ie all the leather, studs, and chains. His vocal range is next to none. Many other people here have already suggested it but you should check out their older song "Victim of Changes"

That's all we did back then was go to concerts, Arena rock was the best. Usually 2 maybe 3 bands, fully packed, light show, super loud and it was the best times for Metal. When the lights went down and the bands hit the stage there was such roar from the crowd and it just erupted into some of the best music you'll ever hear. Try, Hellrider, Love Bites (raw Priest which is hard and fast) and You've got another thing coming, Electric Eye (was just listening to this today), Turbo Lover, Living after Midnight, Breaking the Law (a Priest which is metal, catchy hooks and riffs). Both evolutions of the band are worth every minute to get to know. Don't sleep on this band - Halford (Rob) has one of metal's best primal screams out there, to date, full stop. He is part of a very elite group - and GOD I love me some guitar shred, heavy drums and metal scream. And your reactions are the best - I see your thumbnail and I grab it cause your appreciation of metal is so genuine and it really makes me happy to watch the impact this music has, 'cause I feel that. The most metal song of all time by my favorite band ever!
At the start you heared Scott Travis (drummer)'s debut with the band, then Rob Halford (vocals) - best singer of all time (at least imo)! Then in the middle you heared Glenn Tipton's (lead guitar) masterpiece solo and at around 3/4 of the song also KK Downing' solo (rythm guitar). And we cant forget about Ian Hill (bass), who is the only original member that is still in the band (since 1969).
These guys have been around for more than 53 years and they're still touring and will release a new (19th) studio album in March... You gotta react to more songs by them so you get used to them, before March.
    My suggestions:
-Beyond the Realms of Death (Ative as LEGENDAS - in the title, so you chose the best one)
    -Screaming for Vengeance (live 1983)
-VIctim of Changes (live from Seminole Rock)
    -Judas Rising (official video)
-Diamond and Rust (live from Epitaph)
-Blood Red Skies (live from Epitaph)
    or some of their hits:
-Breaking the Law (official or live from Dortmund 83)
-You've Got Another Thing Comin (live from Epitaph)
Just to name a few lol... enjoy :)

Scott Travis is American, he is from my neck of the woods. Chesapeake Virginia, we would occasionally party together back in the 80's Judas priest has been my favorite band since I was a kid back in 1978. Awesome.

You want to learn guitar? Yes it's hard at first, but one of the best ways is soaking up more like this, and playing with other people. Either a tutor, or - more fun - with a band. You'll pick up influences, learn and trade techniques, and there is nothing like the feeling of pride and joy in putting songs together that you'd pay to hear if it was someone else. It's a long and slow and sometimes painful journey, but so worth it.

Great timing for this song, my man! If you listen to this and "Cemetery Gates" by Pantera you'll see how much Priest's singer Rob Halford really inspired Phil Anselmo of Pantera...it seems like a weird connection but I think you can see it at the end of Cemetery Gates and Painkiller

Tipton and Downing on guitars. You need to watch the Sentinel live from 86 or Victim of Changes live from Us festival to get some more of the Priest catalogue. 18 albums and all different. They are putting a new album out in March.

Rob Halford is the greatest metal singer that ever lived. His vocal range being super-human, that he can hit all of that range at 74 years old today (brand new album) and fun fact: he's gay. My hero since junior high, this man is what every other metal singer is always going to be compared to. I love watching your reaction videos, every time I watch the same one I still get great enjoyment seeing the best parts coming up and awaiting how you will react! Great fun! Other Judas Priest gems to check out: Screaming for Vengeance, Freewheel Burning and Blood Red Skies all showcase Rob Halford's amazing vocals.

It's just such a good riff, man. For me, that was always the biggest difference between Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Maiden is about the melodies, Priest is all about the riffs. Not saying that they don't have great melodies also, 'cause they have, but theese riffs, man...
And Painkiller is one, if not the, most uncompromising, classical Heavy Metal Album of all time.

As others have already commented Priest does not always sound like this. In fact, for most I would never suggest this song as an intro. However, as you were already in deep with Metallica it makes sense for you.
Painkiller is a 6 minute punch in the face by design.
Priest is completely opposite of most successful bands. Most find a sound that works and they mostly stick with it. Priest has evolved album to album throughout the years always tweaking their sound. The evolution of their sound from album to album can be shocking never mind consideration of their full library of music which will span 50 years with their upcoming album to be released in 2024.
During the 80s, newer and heavier bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, etc were coming out. Priest despite being considered as one of the pioneers of metal was in the view of some thought to sound "soft".
Painkiller was a direct response to this criticism.
To show (in part) the evolution of the band I would suggest Victim of Changes next from their 1976 album Sad Wings of Destiny. One of their most popular songs with the Priest faithful that is played at every show.

Priest is royalty, man. It’s the “behind the scenes” musicality of this band which makes it what it is:
    • Rob Halford’s killer instinct when it comes to delivering a vocal melody.
    • The melodic intelligence of KK’s and Glenn’s twin guitars. I’ve been playing for 30 years and a professional musician for half that time. I heard Priest extremely early on in my playing and the ideas they implemented just lit up my brain to what you could do with writing solos, like the signature key changes which always fit like a glove, or using a certain effect to give a riff it’s signature like in “Bloodstone”.
