I've loved star sapphires since my father gave my mother one as a give when I was about 10 years old (too many years ago for me to admit). I was SO excited when I discovered that they can now be synthesized and bought inexpensively. I bought my wife a sterling silver setting and stone for under $25, and she loves it. I'm so glad these beautiful stones are getting some UA-cam love now.
I never had any interest in gemology but since I subbed a few months back I have gained an interest. You make the topic very interesting and I love the way you speak!
My new favorite thing is definitely this color change garnet gemstone I got recently. It turns green, blue, and purple under certain lights. Maybe more.
I remember getting a star amethyst ring for my 7th birthday (I don’t know why my parents gave a really expensive ring to a 7 year old but whatever) it was a gold ring with an oval star amethyst in the middle with two smaller diamonds on the sides of it in a twisting manner and I absolutely LOVED it and still do(amethyst is my birth stone so that was a cool part about it too). My grandparents are gemologists so I learned a lot about gemstones and probably got my fascination with gemstones from them. This video was really cool to watch and I learned quite a bit from watching it, so thank you and have a nice day.
I just love opal it’s my favorite thing to cut other than fire agate. Recently I was introduced to the new love star opal I’m talking precious opal with bright stars that play color independently it’s better than sagenitic fire agate. Keep up the good work.
Hi, so happy to have found this channel. Can you please let me know if the structure of a natural blue sapphire differs from a lab created one? Also, have you heard of Indraneel( a specific type of blue sapphire). Thanks in advance.
Both natural and lab created sapphire have the same atomic structure and properties as far as refractive index, density and hardness etc. are concerned. Color will be dependant on the trace elements use to color the lab created stone. The outer structure or habit will be quite different. For instance, many blue sapphires can occur as a bipyramidal hexagonal barrel shaped prism. Lab created flame fusion sapphire will be formed as a cylindrical boule, almost a teardrop shape. Though I have not heard of Indraneel before, I know neelam is the Hindi word for sapphire and Indra is an ancient Vedic deity, so I imagine Indraneel refers to a blue sapphire to which metaphysical properties aligned to Indra are ascribed.
Good as this is, I can't resist pointing that the plural of "phenomenon" is "phenomena". One phenomenon, two phenomena; this phenomenon, these phenomena; that phenomenon, those phenomena; such a phenomenon, such phenomena; every phenomenon, all phenomena. You get the idea. The same is true of "criterion" (singular) and "criteria" (plural).
"Asterism" also means a recognizable, named group or pattern of stars that doesn't constitute a constellation. The best known is the Big Dipper (a/k/a The Plough), which is only a portion of the constellation of Ursa Major. In southern skies, the Southern Cross is an asterism of four (or maybe five) stars within the constellation Crux (which is of course named for the Southern Cross within it).
Hello JTV. Do you know anyone that is skilled at cabochon for star? I have a very large Sapphire rough that I know will star but having a hard time finding a cutter.
oh so that's what a star sapphire is. I've been wondering about that since i read the inheritance series, in it there is a giant ruby carved into the shape of a perfect rose that they called a star sapphire and for some reason i never looked it up so thank you (btw is a ruby that displays this property called a sapphire) Edit: Flapjacks (i wont forget next time, sorry matpat)
Neat information. We have a family heirloom blue lapis star ring. I had never seen anything like it before so it was really cool to see this video. Especially since I just got a job as an apprentice bench jeweler.
Bad aspect of this video, it doesn't show its crutial part: asterism is light phenomenon. Thus, you should show how it looks in shaddow too. All gems shown here under same light, so it looks like simple drawing/texture on gem, instead of light effect.
Angela Chao MatPat, from the Game Theory channel, referenced this channel once and told viewers to check her out and comment "flapjack" on her videos as a prank of some kind. But it's been going on for months and people just love to beat on a dead horse
I love rose quartz. i never had one with asterism it must be beautiful. I found a huge chunk of rose quartz on Mount Washington in the Presidential Mountains of New Hampshire that was about the size of my head! It happened to be on a day that I was having a rough time of it hiking. It helped to bring my spirits up a bit. It would have been impossible for me to carry it out, though I think in this case it was best to leave it for others to enjoy too. I have not been back to that mountain since, so I often wonder if it's still there. Either way, my memory of that crystal and of that day will stay. When I think of it I swear that I can feel it's good energy.
darrick steele 4 hours ago ,"I love rose quartz. i never ..." darrick, and others reading this, I suggest in future events like this you photograph it with a GPS enhanced phone and supply the photo to a site like google maps, and then it becomes a destination for others to see online and in person(as it then is GPS retrievable)and you could then ask others to visit it and witness it's future well being. Good Luck. P.S. most phones are GPS CAPABLE, but might need be GPS enabled just prior to the photographing of it. (Check it beforehand)
Junk Mail..lol this was back in the flip phone days, I had come from Mt Katadin up in Maine I was just doing my best to keep putting another foot forward. It was a hard day, had hypothermia. I promise that I will try to keep a charged phone on me when I get back back on the trail in 2020. Right now I am planning a second attempt at the Appalachain Trail. I have some things to take care of this year but I will def. take lots of pics.

Physics Girl led me to this channel
I love Physics Girl! Thanks for checking out my channel :)
The same here. Haha
Same
same!

Favorite phenomenon, phosphorescence! But honestly, I love all phenomenon in gems!
I love this channel!!
The music is just a teensy bit too loud though. It was a bit distracting
*huge bit

Its all in my book "ASTERISM-GEMS WITH A STAR" - About 60 different gems showing asterism !!

I just got here 30 minutes ago and already this has gotten my interest in gemology sparked up again
Just saw this in an ad, it was more than worth watching again.
Awesome! Thanks for watching again, Scott!

i’m glad at least someone loves spinel (SU reference)
I love Spinel from Steven Universe the movie. She my favourite character
The background looks like Unbox therapy’s background
In fact I got this ad from unbox therapy’s video
Love any kind of light play.
Which minerals can do 12 rays? How much do custom synthetic gems cost?

Saw this as an ad on a makeup tutorial, had to click. Super interesting! Subbed!

Im in the process of starting a jewelry company around these.
What is the phenomenon you talk about at 3.37 and at 3.58 ? Thank you
i bought starlight ruby. and it's so beautiful ❤️

Hello JTV. Do you know anyone that is skilled at cabochon for star? I have a very large Sapphire rough that I know will star but having a hard time finding a cutter.
Looks amazing. I want all gemstones you show.
Please do a video on opals! They are my favorite!
What is the track used at the end?
@1:15 You read my mind! Lol I was going to ask about the cat’s eye. Lol
How can we tell the difference between synthetic and naturally occurring star stones?
I have one star sapphire! It is amazing and i live it!
Does anyone know what’s the name of the soundtrack at the end? I been dying trying to find it aahahha
How much is this stone? I want it!

Lore keeper XVII rubies and sapphires are the same thing, just different colors! so probably, yeah.
Lore keeper XVII I read those books too o: that's also what I was thinking of while watching this!
so what color would your dragon be
Lore keeper XVII preferably green, lol, you?
honestly id want a deep sapphire blue like Saphira's scails where
Imagine having a ceiling studded with stones exhibiting asterism
Make a vid on black opal please 😁😁😁
Your videos are super interesting
Can you please do Alexandrite?
Can this happen in citrine?
Yes, but it's more often to see it in rose quartz.
Neat information. We have a family heirloom blue lapis star ring. I had never seen anything like it before so it was really cool to see this video. Especially since I just got a job as an apprentice bench jeweler.
Uptill now i've only seen ball-shaped Rosequartz with Asteroism on both sides
Nice video
Would it be possible to have more than 6 rays? Like 8? Or maybe 10?
Some star gems have 12 rays, but it's more like two pairs of 6 rays.
It's caused by microscopic inclusions in between the faces of the gem it has been seen in 4, 6, 8, 12 formations
Okay, sounds pretty cool but how does it work?
I bet you that garnet came from idaho...
So cool
in my opinion it would do even better in the middle of a circlet than a pendant
Do cabochons have a table and pavallion?😁😁😅 just curious to know
Please don't have medium/loud music in the background when you are speaking technical things.
Due to the shape and only 4 lines on the garnet, I've decided that it should be called an x-ray garnet... Lol
Beautuful
I counted 6 rays on the Spinel and 4 days on the Garnet.
oooooo that's what its called!
Pretty sure corundum is not spinel.
Because it has different property's.
Even though it's just a metamorphic difference.
Bad aspect of this video, it doesn't show its crutial part: asterism is light phenomenon. Thus, you should show how it looks in shaddow too. All gems shown here under same light, so it looks like simple drawing/texture on gem, instead of light effect.
I am having a star sapphire ring made in white gold with diamonds
Hey, can Asterism be seen in a diamond? I love this channel btw!
Hey Sarah! If you had the right inclusions or growth it could potentially happen. We haven’t seen it, but it may be possible.
@@gems That would be such a cool discovery!!
I have a star rose quartz somewhere
XDXDXD Steven Universe has made me think whenever someone says a Gemstone's name, I look over to see the gem and my brain thinks of gem beings lol
same, i thought of Spinel-
I cut a 4 rayed star opal from Australia. Have you ever seen one?? What’s it worth?🎉😢😮
I can barely see the gem at all which makes this video hard to follow but overwhelming info.
I can set that for you :)
I miss Natalie on this channel
DIANA SENT ME HERE
We love Dianna! Physics Girl's the best, right?!
carpenter!
Asterism made me think of WD Gaster
I’m new here so why is everyone saying flapjacks?

So, they, um, "star" in their own show....
Star, Astros, Asterism. Like the kindergarden or first grade song about the sun.
