Wonderful video. Sketchbooks are such a wonderful tool that can be used in so many ways. I'm always trying to convince everyone to keep a sketchbook, even if they're not an "artist". @@dougjacksonart just like you said about creating art. The 'doing' is the important bit. Will keep that in mind the next time a sketch doesn't come out quite as I'd like it to (ie almost always!) 😏
THANKS! Great guidance but also very helpful tips for getting over a slump-- as a beginner, I get stuck-- but now I'll change-up sizes & keep something in my purse for those 'waiting' times, and try to kick myself back into action. Thank you! :)
You completely spoke to me today. First time I have seen you and I'm so inspired to enjoy the "middle bit".....my Art is in my head and needs to come out! 😊
Doug, your videos are SO much fun! Always positive and inspiring, informative and enlightening. Your art is absolutely gorgeous and I very much appreciate and relate with your philosophy. Who knew ‘googling’ ’how to use a Fude pen’ would lead to this? 🤗 I am very happy I subscribed to this wonderful channel and would LOVE to see a sketchbook review! Now off to purchase a beverage 🍺👏❤️🇨🇦
Thanks so much. Your comment and beer is very much appreciated 👍. Some of my videos are just me drawing and I guess not that intresting but I'm try more and more to get creative with the content and do fresh stuff. Like lots of things I guess it's a case of slowly making things up! 🤣🤣
Yes! Wonderful video. I have so many sizes of sketchbooks. 4x4 cold press, 6x8 hot press, 9x12 spiral. 8x8 square. 100 percent cotton, cellulose, etc. I felt guilty stockpiling sketchbooks and thought there was something addictive in my personality. But now, after this video I feel like it's the normal creative thing to do. I have different books for different themes. All still unfinished. But I realise now, that it's the right path. Experimentation. Seeing what works and what does not. Today I moved into my big one and YES the lines were more expressive. The smalls require details. The bigs can be more freeing. Thanks!! @@nickorange4881do you have a favourite loose paper? If you do, consider making your own sketchbook. There are several YT creators with how to videos. Lovely video and points that you tell us. I agree, drawing is so good for soul. Enjoy the journey and have fun. Oh, yes. I would love to see info about different sketch books.
I love your personal style: you make your audience feel comfortable & happy. I just started my first sketchbook a couple of months ago, for a trip to England/Scotland & focusing a bit on "Wuthering Heights." That book will be for all things from the UK. I'm very much a (very untalented) beginner and I just draw what I'd like to the best of my abilities, use captions, and go on to the next page. Some of the drawings are downright terrible, and some are passably good, but I love the whole process, and I just think of myself as a 5 year old, having fun! Thank you for supporting this kind of art, and thanks for all the tips, writing my name in my newest book (Mexico, festivals) now.
Oh and one other thing…. You mentioned about not having any negative comments yet…. This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen, but you have a really nice relaxed and friendly manner and I think that helps. The closest I’ve had to a negative comment was someone saying I talked too much on a bookbinding tutorial (which was probably true) but all the other comments said they appreciated how slow and detailed it was! So I’m guessing the person who thought I talked too much, probably already knew how to do it! (Looking how long this comment is, the talking too much is seeming more appropriate! Haha)
Well I like long comments so you fire away. I will have a look at your channel and get some book binder knowledge in my brain. Great. I can certainly do a vid on that and it would make a wonderful subject. Alot of my ideas come from my days working as a designer and I do forget how unusual that makes some of my art. Thanks so much for the inspiration 🙏 ❤
Ooh I do love self improvement lists! Some great takeaways here and just in time for my brand new sketchbook. Only I now realise I shall need at least four 🤔. Excellent Doug, thank you.
I really appreciated this video content. I am afraid that I have collected and purchased a lot of art supplies that are "too good" to use and feel a lot of pressure to simply start sketching. I went to art college and was at one time competent but have raised a family and now with time would like to return. I felt that I resonated with all of these tips. I am feeling an urge to simply play and not worry about the final product. I will enjoy some of your other videos while beginning. Than you.

Nice to meet you, Doug. Thanks for sharing such inspiring videos. I'm new to sketching, drawing, art, and all things art-related but I'm glad I feel pulled to carry-on with learning along the way. Hi Doug! Thanks for this very encouraging video! I've been using a couple sketch books and enjoying them. I really liked your reasonings for using sketch books. I loved seeing inside your sketchbook. Really enjoying watching your channel. Love the knowledge you share and your sense of humor. Thank you for leaving the "real life" bits in, like dropping your pen. It's so refreshing and more enjoyable.
Thanks for watching!. Its nice to not be too slick. One of the nice things about the channels is I'm preaching a simple non-perfectionist approach so I don't want the vids to be too slick.
Doug, you exude a beautiful soul and I do believe you will continue to ward off those that are hurtful online. I can even bet you have brightened so many a day of so many souls out there that have a watch of your videos. Keep being YOU! By the way, you lood fantastic in that yellow shirt today. Good taste!
I'm so glad this video popped up out of nowhere. Your work is inspiring. On the topic of sketchbooks, I make my own stitch-bound hard cover books, sketch and journal. I use catalogue sample wallpapers to cover them, and I might varnish to seal. Happy sketching.
I absolutely LOVE this video and all of the ideas and art. Thank you for sharing your creativity and passion. I have dozens of empty sketchbooks and you've given me the courage to sully the pages. ;) Many, many thanks!
I know what you mean about putting you name in sketch books. I lost an A4 sized book which had some sketches that I enjoyed doing, and have never got it back because I didn't name it. Me and my labelling machine are about to become good friends. Thanks for the video - lots of good ideas there.
Great tips! As a mom and teacher, I love the idea of family pages. Its a great way to relive a moment and see it from different perspectives. So happy I found you!
What great tips and ideas! I started doing urban sketching during Covid. I’ve been pretty consistent with practice and looking back at my first sketches I can tell I’m improving. Now I want to try all these ideas. Thank you.
Found you and subbed straight away, i needed thia video today thank you!! Off to watch some more. I think i get too precious about my aketch books and then freeze. My last one took 15 years to fill lol 😆 the next one wont!! As you said not every page needs to be perfect!
Just found your channel by accident. Love your artwork and I like that you leave your little mistakes like dropping your pen or stumbling over your words, in your videos. Nothing is perfect--especially art! And the way you talk about art is the way that all artist should. Very encouraging and I am now a subscriber. Keep going.
Super kind of you to say and notice those things. I could do slick little polished vids but that's not me and it's not what this channel is trying to model either. Welcome aboard😊
Hello, I just recently discovered your channel and I've been turning on your videos while I'm working on my Illustration Thesis. I really enjoy your page and hearing you talk about techniques, sketchbook reviews and creating art, etc. Thank you for your insights! I look forward to watching more.
I spotted 'Rivelin Walk' in one of your super sketch books lol, does that mean you are based in God's Own County, or were you just visiting? It is lovely down there in the Rivelin Valley. I began my later life art journey (in watercolours) back in the lock ups, and only really found the benefits of using sketch books in the last year. I don't know why I didn't use them earlier! I like to use them for the many tutorials I watch, and then I have something to refer back to if I want to. I never used to be able to draw at all, but I can definitely see that it's a skill that can be learned, and improved upon with practice. Enjoyed the video, thanks 🙏💖
Welcome Penny. There is loads of vids on the channel so have a roam around and I'm sure you'll find some usefull tips. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Hi Doug, I follow you on Instagram and love your work but didn't realise you had a UA-cam channel. Great to see you 'in the flesh' as it were. Some great tips. Thank you!
The only thing with having 12 points in your video is I feel I want to leave 12 comments! Haha! But I’ll pick one…. You mentioned about getting a cheap sketchbook for those out and about sketches when you’re just waiting around with time to kill, I do something “similar” but…. I make my own sketchbooks so I use leftovers of the good paper to make a tiny book that would fit in my purse or pocket and I carry one pen that has multiple colours. It is my “Emergency sketch kit”!
That is such good idea.💡 I've been meaning to have a go at sketchbook making for aged but I keep getting distracted by side quests and parenting. Maybe that would make a fun video, me sewing a sketchbook to my finger..🤣🤣
Just discovered your channel and loving the vibe! Particularly liked the bit about writing. Probably didn't need to see the wee accordion sketchbook because now I must have one... or ten. :D
Though I have been doing art for quite a while, I FINALLY got "into sketchbooks." I never realized the value. Especially, now since I am teaching classes, my sketch books are valuable. For the first time, I will be offering my sketch books for viewing (doing an art tour type of event) and excited to hear comments for the public. Yes, some are good and some bad. But....."beauty is in the eye of the beholder!" Thank you for your views.

My plan is to put together a to-go art kit to keep with me as I am out n' about. I will be back as I enjoy being here. ~ Karla
Well you a very welcome and thanks for your lovely comment. I try and have a sketch bag ready to pick up on the way out. Its a great excuse to get out into the big wide world. 👍👍
Muchas gracias por tus consejos.
You are most welcome. Thanks for visiting my channel.
Brilliant advice. Thank you. Yes please for a sketchbook discussion.
You got it!
I needed that encouragement I’m not very proficient in Art or drawing but I do enjoy my (Happy ) accidents. This video confirms my Sketch book approach to Fine Art. It’s mine and who cares? It’s mine and I have enjoyed the adventure.
Perfectly put. I love it!
Great video - thanks! This is the first time I’ve come across your channel - I’m subscribing!
Welcome aboard!
Hi Doug! Thanks for this very encouraging video! I've been using a couple sketch books and enjoying them. I really liked your reasonings for using sketch books. I loved seeing inside your sketchbook. I love your style of sketching and your boats etc. just lovely. Thanks for your encouragement and style of communication in your videos - I find you very down to earth and genuine.
Susan in AZ🥰🏜️
Glad it was helpful Susan. Thanks for your kind comments . 🙂
definitely like to see a sketch book overview, I'm just starting out and bought a few now, some are so rubbish, looking forward to that.
Excellent 👍
I'd love to see a mega sketch book video!
I better get busy then...🤣🤣 ONWARD!!!
Good taste!
Wow, thank you. You arr very sweet. I love wearing bright colours. I find they always make me a few percent happier. 😁😁
Your soul shines through, in your videos. Namaste’
Wow, thank you
I'm so glad this video popped up out of nowhere. Your work is inspiring.
On the topic of sketchbooks, I make my own stitch-bound hard cover books, sketch and journal. I use catalogue sample wallpapers to cover them, and I might varnish to seal.
Happy sketching.
That sounds amazing. What a skill. I'd love to have a go at that one day.
Great stuff Doug...as always.
Thanks Gary. Have a great day 👍
I absolutely LOVE this video and all of the ideas and art. Thank you for sharing your creativity and passion. I have dozens of empty sketchbooks and you've given me the courage to sully the pages. ;) Many, many thanks!
Thanks. GO FOR IT!!!
I know what you mean about putting you name in sketch books. I lost an A4 sized book which had some sketches that I enjoyed doing, and have never got it back because I didn't name it. Me and my labelling machine are about to become good friends. Thanks for the video - lots of good ideas there.
Exactly!!.. I think people are essentially kind and appreciate art so I'm being hopeful. 👍👍 Labelling machine?? Ohh very fancy!
Great tips! As a mom and teacher, I love the idea of family pages. Its a great way to relive a moment and see it from different perspectives. So happy I found you!
You are so welcome! I love how my art intersects with my family in such a positive way. My daughter is turning into quite the journaler. 😍
Great tips, lovely work, thanks!
Thanks so much.
What great tips and ideas! I started doing urban sketching during Covid. I’ve been pretty consistent with practice and looking back at my first sketches I can tell I’m improving. Now I want to try all these ideas. Thank you.
You are so welcome! I think Covid changed all out art journeys. It certainly rebooted mine.
Thank you Doug, for another wonderful video Have a nice week
Thanks. You too.
Found you and subbed straight away, i needed thia video today thank you!! Off to watch some more.
I think i get too precious about my aketch books and then freeze. My last one took 15 years to fill lol 😆 the next one wont!! As you said not every page needs to be perfect!
Thanks so much.
Would like to see what you suggest in a sketch book...
Coming soon 🙏😄
Hello, I just recently discovered your channel and I've been turning on your videos while I'm working on my Illustration Thesis. I really enjoy your page and hearing you talk about techniques, sketchbook reviews and creating art, etc. Thank you for your insights! I look forward to watching more.
Wonderful! Thanks 👍
I started drawing and painting recently and used a A4 sketch book dividing the page into 4 until now. Now I can use it better thanks to you
Great to hear 👂 👍
Great tips thank you. Looking forward to more video's 😀
More to come!
Great to hear Melanie. Yes I am Sheffield based. 👍
It's the first time I have come across you. This is a great video...prompting me to use my sketch book more oftern.
Welcome Penny. There is loads of vids on the channel so have a roam around and I'm sure you'll find some usefull tips. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Would love your thoughts on different sketchbooks. And just found your channel in my suggestions and subscribed. Love your vibe and all you said in this video!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great tips! Adding contact info to my books today. I also have a couple of blank sketchbooks that have been taunting me. Time to start them NOT on page 1. This is the first of your videos that I’ve seen and I fear I’m about to go down the rabbit hole 🐇 Keep up your natural, easygoing, and positive style. It’s refreshing.
Thanks so much Pamela. 😁
you could have an exhibition of your sketchbooks...they are beautiful!
Thanks Frank
Great sketchbook video - feels personal 😂😂😂
Glad you liked it. 👍
Just found your channel and so enjoyed this video! I am very early in my sketchbook / art journey, and it is honestly one of the best things I’ve ever started for my stress level, mental health, etc. Great tips provided here!

Hi Doug, I follow you on Instagram and love your work but didn't realise you had a UA-cam channel. Great to see you 'in the flesh' as it were. Some great tips. Thank you!
Yes I'm doing a fair bit here now.
Great ideas. Enjoyed your art that I saw in the filp-throughs. Thanks.
Thanks so much!
Seriously... I'm actually writing that down!
@@dougjacksonart but please don’t actually sew it to you finger! Haha
Just discovered your channel and loving the vibe! Particularly liked the bit about writing. Probably didn't need to see the wee accordion sketchbook because now I must have one... or ten. :D
Awesome! Thank you!
I love listening to your videos and your bonkers style of showing us what to do, I have learned so much from you. thankyou

You're so welcome!
Great tips, Doug!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Super thoughts here. We are definitely on the same page. Sketchbooks are such a wonderful intresting artwork. So personal and complex.
I really enjoyed your tips!
