They're not underrated at all... They're highly respected by their peers and those in the industry know just how talented they are... They're just not as "acclaimed" as they should be because they have sound that is too complex, intricate and experimental for the average persons brain that's been dumbed down by basic 4/4 time pop, rock, hip-hop, rap and baby metal etc... Those in the know fucking know... They aren't underrated, just underappreciated by the troglodytes in society and the troglodytes that control the music industry!
Mastodon is really unique. The later you get in the discography the less raspy it get, but it gets super melodic on the 4th album Crack the Skye. Highly recommend any song off that album
Don't let this be the last Mastodon track you listen, man. Big discography and 3 vocalists brings a lot of variety. Add some Clutch and All Them Witches to your daily spins and you'll find alot of great tunes. Keep 'em coming, really enjoy your posts \m/
Brann Dailor is a legit monster behind the drum kit. And he also sings while drumming like that! 😮. Will be seeing them this summer with Gojira and Lorna Shore
The Mastodon rabbit hole is vast. Every album sounds different and yet they all sound like Mastodon. 3 singers, Brann the drummer is a monster, Bill Kelliher writes amazing riffs.
You definitely have to check out their song "Tread Lightly" or just the entire album Once More Round the Sun. It's my favorite album of theirs as a whole.
Mastodon gets wild, man. Their album "Crack the Sky" was written because the singer at the time was in a brief coma and apparently Rasputin visited him in his coma and inspired the album. When he came out of it, he wrote the album over the course of a year while he recuperated. 6 Grammy nominations and one win, they play interesting music for sure and usually put on a pretty good show. Great reaction!
More Mastodon! I love this band. Crack the Skye is my favorite album from them. I'd love to see you do the track Crack the Skye. Their drummer, Brann Dailor is one of my favorite of all time. His drumming is so unique and fluid. He has a great voice too.
I recommend Gigantium from their latest album. They have evolved since those early years. The drummer now sings too. Gigantium is heavy and beautiful at the same time. Go check it out. Great band.
This song is based on Moby Dick. The whole Leviathan album is based on that concept. It's fantastic. All their albums are great The Czar is my all time favorite from them from the Crack the Skye album. You gotta do more Mastodon please!🤘🤘🤘
Mastadon is worth a deep dive. They get more and more progressive as they go. Similar to Tool in that regard. Great drums and guitar work throughout their discography. Vocals are an acquired taste.
What I find interesting in Mastodon is that none of them were actual singers when they started. Now we have three of them doing leads (with Bill being a competent backing vocalist on his own), each one with a very distinct and unique voice and they're getting _better_ with each new album (and fortunately live as well, since it's one of the things that kept people from them: the live vocals).
Mastodon is not for everyone, but they have built a mass following on their brand of Southern-fried guitar riffs and heavy delivery... This was one of their early tracks from 2004... Vocalist Neil Fallon of Maryland rockers Clutch did co-vocals on 'Blood & thunder'... This album ('Leviathan') was based on the novel 'Moby Dick' by Herman Melville... A lot of their work is based on fantasy fiction. Hailing from Georgia, Mastodon were formed in 2000 by Brann Dailor (drums), Troy Sanders (bass), Brent Hinds (guitar) and Bill Kelliher (guitar)... Sanders and Hinds started w/ the bulk of the vocals, but Brann Dailor also added his lead vocals from 2009. Mastodon began recording and releasing original music independently before they got signed to indie metal label Relapse Records and released the first album 'Remission' in 2002... it was followed by the 'Leviathan' concept album in 2004, which got them on tour opening for Slayer eventually and Mastodon began building a hardcore fanbase. 'Blood mountain' was released in 2006 on a major label Reprise Records and Mastodon were on the road constantly as the album charted in the US at #32... the single "Colony of Birchmen" (feat. Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age) became a fan fave. Mastodon graduated to a headlining band w/ the release of their 2009 album 'Crack the Skye'... the single 'Oblivion' was a huge success and the album featured drummer Brann Dailor contributing lead vocals... Dailor said he named the album after his sister who took her own life because of a painful mystery illness that was undiagnosed (It was likely an autoimmune disorder that can be impossible to diagnose by standard physicians)... 'Crack the Skye' charted at #11 in the US and was a global success. Later Mastodon albums have been more polished, sonically diverse... and commercially successful - 'The Hunter' (2011)... "Once more round the Sun" (2014)... 'Emperor of the Sand' (2017)... and their latest album "Hushed and Grim" (2021) which charted at #20 in the US... #14 in the UK... Mastodon is still a major headlining act on tour. Some of the heavier Mastodon songs - 'March of the Fire Ants'... 'Aqua dementia' ... 'The wolf is loose'... 'Quintessence'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 And Mastodon's newer tracks - 'Show yourself'... 'The Motherload' ... 'Curl of the Burl'... 'Teardrinker'... 🤘🤘
What a fun thing to come by on my subscription feed. Love mastodon! Higgly recommend checking out more of them esp newer stuff. Their progression is fantastic.
Probably my favorite as well! Absolutely love this track. This was the first mastodon album I bought. Took a little to grow on me due to the vocals, but I’ve been a fan for a long time now. I think I prefer the earlier stuff overall, but there are some real bangers later on. Crack the Skye is a great album, too.
Everyone else has said it, but you will likely like the vocals more on the 4th album, Crack the Skye, and later, when the drummer adds his vocal talent to the mix, and the other two vocalists begin using more melody in their singing as well. You absolutely must hear their masterpiece "The Last Baron" from Crack the Skye- though it's a 13 min runtime. "The Czar" from the same album is only 11 min, but also fantastic. Several songs on the album "Emperor of Sand" are great ones to react to as well, I hope you'll hear "Sultan's Curse", "Ancient Kingdom" and "Steambreather" someday. I feel like this is a band you might one day want to do the whole discography, every album has good stuff on it.
Fuck yeah! Hearts Alive is epic Sleeping Giant changed my life Mother Puncher is heaviest The Czar is transcendent The Sparrow is graceful Asleep in the Deep is super cool Jaguar God is godly Their new album is so full of Soul They live rent free in mine. Kind like Tool w you
IMO Mastodon is the probably the most interesting metal band of their generation. They have a unique sound that evolved over time to become more melodic and take advantage of the members talents (Drummer Singing etc). A true progressive band that are both punishingly aggressive but beautifully melodic. Real musicians making music they feel! Please do more (Crack the Skye)
The mighty Mastodon... love it. There are too many awesome songs to recommend. Also, a little FYI, the singer in the middle of that track was none other than Neil Fallon of Clutch(whom you should also check out)

When you mentioned not knowing what he's saying, that whole verse was Neil Fallon of Clutch. They're not this kind of heavy these days, but Mastodon knows what's up. Saw these guys play tiny rooms back in the day. Saw them opening for Clutch later on. This entire album is fire.
It makes me happy that mastodon clicked with you. Good entry point. I think that they have many songs that are not well suited to new listeners…. Obviously not the case here. 🤘🏻
They are fantastic. I guess watching Tool gets you used to weird time signatures already so that helps. If you're talking about that chugga chugga sound it's called a palm muting guitar technique. I'm sure there's a UA-cam video of someone doing it for 20 seconds. It's delightful
Mastodon is one of those bands that makes me wanna be able to listen to more bands like Mastodon. I just cannot get past the constant scream/growl. The music is fucking great, though.

It appears that this song is about the novel, Moby Dick, possibly a an inspired narration by Captain Ahab, himself. Incredible concept for such a hard song, and incredible lyrics. I can visualize them chasing down a giant whale right now as I listen to the song.
Lyrics
I think that someone is trying to kill me
Infecting my blood and destroying my mind
No man of the flesh could ever stop me
The fight for this fish is a fight to the death
White whale, holy grail
White whale, holy grail
What remorseless emperor commands me
I no longer govern my soul
I am completely immersed in darkness
As I turn my body away from the sun
White whale, holy grail
White whale, holy grail
Split your lungs with blood and thunder
When you see the white whale
Break your backs and crack your oars men
If you wish to prevail
This ivory leg is what propels me
Harpoons thrust in the sky
Aim directly for his crooked brow
And look him straight in the eye
White whale, holy grail
White whale, holy grail

That technique at the end is called a triplet. It's definitely a great way to add some punch to something that's already really punchy.
More Mastodon please! This band is terribly underrated.
100%
One of my top 3 for sure.
Not sure they under rated. They are one of the most respected metal bands in existence. Over 1.2million monthly listens on Spotify. They are great.
Yeah, it seems that only slightly old school rockers know about Mastodon.

Mastodon is really unique. The later you get in the discography the less raspy it get, but it gets super melodic on the 4th album Crack the Skye. Highly recommend any song off that album
This is my favorite Mastodon track. They are phenomenal live too. I've seen them 3 times.
It still on my list. Watching this track from Roskilde 2011 here on YT, omg what a experience
Don't let this be the last Mastodon track you listen, man. Big discography and 3 vocalists brings a lot of variety.

He needs to hear clutch - elephant riders 👍
Brann Dailor is a legit monster behind the drum kit. And he also sings while drumming like that! 😮. Will be seeing them this summer with Gojira and Lorna Shore
Mastodon honestly has one of the best evolutions of any metal band, they're great, can't really go wrong with any of their albums.
One of the best discogs ever in metal
I will be seeing them in Aug. I bought the tickets for Gojia but have been listening to them more and more while I am anticipating!
@@TheATOMICGOBLIN you’ll have a blast, both bands were on fire on the first leg of the tour, easily the best metal show out there currently
More mastodon, you won't be disappointed! Their new stuff is amazing!
I captured TearDrinker live in Cleveland… hop on over to Wolfram Reactor74
The Mastodon rabbit hole is vast. Every album sounds different and yet they all sound like Mastodon. 3 singers, Brann the drummer is a monster, Bill Kelliher writes amazing riffs.
Shout out Bill, Brent gets most of the love for his solos and stuff but Bill is a godly riff writer, one of the absolute best in metal
You definitely have to check out their song "Tread Lightly" or just the entire album Once More Round the Sun. It's my favorite album of theirs as a whole.
"the drummer going absolutely apeshit" yea bro he is really HIM

Yes! The title track is probably my favorite song by mastodon!
The Czar and The Last Baron are my favorites.
Crack the Skye was written about the drummers little sister who died. Her name was Skye.
@@MaximMelamed it's actually both! I hadn't heard about the homage to his sister, I had only heard about astral projection and Rasputin. TIL.

One of the greatest metal bands of all time. Atlanta legends.
Mastodon - The Sparrow. Completely different feel but absolutely mesmerizing.

next by mastodon you should try more than i could chew! been in love with the song since it came out recently
Wow 😮❤❤❤❤❤
We need more metal songs based on classic literature.
"I wasnt quite ready" is the most genuine reaction I have heard to this track. Glad you gave it a fair shake and ended up liking it 🙂
My introduction to Mastodon was the track March of the fire Ants when they released their Remission album, been a fan ever since 🤘🏼🔥🔥🤘🏼
You may like their more melodic songs better. Try - Oblivion.
A must
Let’s goooo favorite band in the world! Masto-fuckin-don!

Mastadon is worth a deep dive. They get more and more progressive as they go. Similar to Tool in that regard. Great drums and guitar work throughout their discography. Vocals are an acquired taste.
As they developed, the had more members of the band take turns singing, for people who prefer "clean" vocals over the metal growl.
@@tonyzahn8911 Yup, even with the clean singing the vocals are an acquired taste. Vocals aren't the strong suit for Mastodon.
@@dfbovey i disagree with that entirely. Their layering of the 3 vocals is one of my favorite parts esp in their newer stuff
@@jleighwolfe Cool. You've convinced me.
