I know I'm late to the party today, Geebz, but if you enjoyed that drumming from him, check out their song Ember City off of _Once More Around The Sun._ A fantastic masterpiece of a song from them (as good as _Oblivion_ imo!) with fantastic fills, and chugging relentlessly. Their drummer Brann Dailor did a vid with Meinl Cymbals (ua-cam.com/video/f_reZZxP7N4/v-deo.html) on that song and another of theirs to showcase his work, and it's just phenomenal.
As you probably have heard by now, the musicianship all around with Mastodon is on another level even compared to so many headlining acts in rock and metal. Bassist Troy Sanders is the "frontman" and main singer, holding down more of the deeper vocals. Brent Hinds their Lead guitarist always loves to go crazy with their solos and find ways to add flair to their work, as well as doing backup vocals. Their more rhythm style guitarist Bill Kelliher has shown time and time again to experiment religiously with guitar tones, pedals, and everything else under the sun to create masterful tracks that hold their own place among all their other work. Oh yeah, Brann Dailor also does lead vocals in conjunction with Troy.
Crazy band, exceptional musicians, and phenomenal albums. Love them to death!

The outro riff feels very much like a melody you'd hear in a sea shanty but with the aggression of storm ravaging the waters. The production as a whole evokes images of the ocean in my opinion. Matt Bayless, who produced this album, did something very similar with Oceanic by ISIS. The entire drum sound on that album sounds like it should be on a pirate ship sailing towards the horizon.

A lot of songs just take titles or characters from popular culture and then make nothing about them in the song, but what I love about this one is how it captures the essence of Ahab's insanity in audio form. His obsession, his rage against the white whale. Instead of stealing, it adds to the appreciation of the character

It adds so much that isn't captured in the novel. They took Ahab's insanity and rage and dialled it up to appropriate, almost cartoon levels for a man who brings others to die with him hunting a colossal whale.
"Split your lungs with blood and thunder - when you see the white whale!
Break your backs and crack your oars, men - if you wish to prevail!"

Brann is an amazing drummer, one of the best in the business. And even more impressive is that he does vocals on a ton of tracks. In fact, there's no "lead singer" in Mastodon. Troy Sanders (bass) and Brent Hinds (guitar), all contribute their own voices to the music. And boy, do I love these early tracks from them (this was the album that introduced me to them). They sound like a bunch of angry, drunk sailors. Appropriate, since the album itself is based on Moby Dick. But you'll get to hear an amazing evolution of their voices, and the overall music, as you dig into more of their stuff.

Definitely think my top 5 metal bands of 2000-2010 in no real order are: Mastodon, Tool, Protest the Hero, Every Time I Die, and Opeth. All 5 are progressive while still being heavy and keeping those catchy hooks and riffs in just about every song.

@@redaffix7320 interesting list. Tool is probably my favorite band but I wouldn’t consider them metal at all. Maybe that’s just me. On the other hand Protest the Hero is not my thing. Can’t stand them personally and never got into Every Time I Die. But Opeth, Tool, and Mastodon are brilliant. I would throw in Deftones and NIN as 2 other favorites of mine that aren’t quite metal imo but get very close to it at times like Tool.

@@redaffix7320 Technically that's a tough category. Considering Tool only put out 10,000 Days in 2006 would make it hard for me to choose them specifically between 2000-2010. Opeth is a definite, Dream Theater is an easy choice for me because they released at least 4 different albums which were also their heaviest. I would probably take Avenged Sevenfold, I just love City of Evil and their self titled was really good too. Still many more to consider, Mastadon, Gojira, Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Dillinger Escape Plan, Strapping Young Lad, Nevermore (one of my personal favorites), and LOTS more.

The breakdown of Bran Dailor's drums and snare work is so overlooked in this album. Love the video and love this band. I remember first coming across this track 16 years ago, and it completely changing my life for the better. Other amazing Mastodon songs to consider: Crack the Skye from the album "Crack the Skye", an homage to the drummer's sister, Colony of Birchmen from the album "Blood Mountain", Dry Bone Valley off of the album "The Hunter", any song from "Once More 'Round the Sun" is pretty solid.
All those tremendous songs aside, by far, Toe to Toes from "Cold Dark Place" is the song that has peeled apart my heart the most. I listen for lyrics in metal quite a bit, and the lyrics in that song, coupled with the most beautiful sound coming from those wonderfully talented men, almost brings me to tears every time I listen to it. Not hyperbole, actually cried the first time I heard it.
Once you have done "enough" videos about Mastodon, or if you feel you must know more about the drummer, I implore you to look up the a bit of the life of Brann, he is my single favorite human being and drummer. Got a chance to meet him, and at least to me, it was a very powerful moment. Nothing against Troy, Brent or Bill, they are all equally phenomenal humans and I love them as well, but Brann is just... something else. I'd love to see your reaction to the easily most progressive Mastodon song "The Last Baron". That track is such a masterpiece with tons of twists and hooks.

The Last Baron really shows off their musicianship and has sections where they just sound like a jam band. That's my recommendation for your next Mastodon breakdown.

Leviathan was the first Mastodon album I listened to, really blew my mind ..I gotta say tho the best drums I heard in a Mastodon album is definitely on Remission. Not a lotta people talk about Remission enough...it's a technical masterpiece an my personal favourite Mastodon album just for the drums , tied with blood mountain.

One of my favourite Mastodon songs, they have definitely mellowed on more recent albums, but they are also growing as songwriters and exploring more territory
Ole Nessie and Naked Burn are the two I'd love to see you react to
