Chef's Night Out: Malört Shots, Duck Frites, and Quesadillas (Fat Rice)

- If you do a Chef's Night Out in Chicago and don't take a shot of Malört, were you even in Chicago? We head out for an epic evening with the duo behind Logan Square's Fat Rice, Abe Conlon and Adrienne Lo. The night begins at a Logan Square classic, Lula Cafe. After three courses of Chef Jason Hammel's delicious farm-to-table food, the crew visits Café Marie-Jeanne for porron waterfalls and duck fat frites.
Then it's off to Rose's Lounge, the ultimate Chicago dive-bar, for Old-Style in frosted mugs and shots of Malört and Slivovitz. The night ends back at Fat Rice with pork chop sandwiches, oyster "omelettes,” "poor man's sushi”... and more shots of Malört.

This chef is legit. I was lucky enough to work under him in one of his summer programs during high school. All this hate in the comments saying "hipster" chef as if it demeans his work. Go taste his food, bet it blows your mind.
People are calling this guy a "hipster"? lol! It's funny everyone's definition of a hipster is different depending on your perspective! Come to Portland. I'll show you some fucking hipsters.
'hipster' just means anyone who doesn't make burgers or pizza or any other basic fast food shit, and incorporates other cultures into their cooking.
James Green except everyone calls anyone from The Pizza Show a hipster 😂
lol wtf?
@@BassssicBasssssssss i feel like the problem is these type of people who are of this ilk always complain about cultural appropriation then are the biggest offenders of it. It's always these super hipster type guys who make Japanese and Chinese and Vietnamese and any other Asian type food and have maybe been to the countries a month total. Like at least live there a year then you aren't a hipster for cooking the food. you don't know shit about it if you stay there a month. But dw, they will complain about "cultural appropriation" of other shit
Adrienne is one hot chef. Asian man of mystery knocking back the fountain of booze is a hero. Wish I could eat and drink like these guys on Chef's Night Out... but I would be tapping out after the first place.
Man of mystery. Dude straight up stole your guys drink and dipped out.
That's PK! He works for Off Color. Used to do some dope craft beer chug vids!
I loved this one, makes me wanna go to Chicago and spend a lot of money I dont have on food
This is definitely one of the more underrated episodes.
I drove Abe too high school he has always been a great person im so happy for his success
I appreciate this episode so much. My ex was a chef. We used to have some really great times. But it’s true what they say chefs don’t have groceries at home. Lmao.
Love munchies chef night out episodes. They give some damn good insight of where good food is in their cities.
Bars in Chicago - Do you have any Merlot? No, but we've got Malort.
You're kidding right? :(
I like how carelessly international this episode is. Fat Rice folks are the future.
God I hope not 😂😂😂😂
these shows are awesome, keep it up munchies
He sounds like Anthony Bourdain.
Dead?
Eric Yes he has passed away unfortunately. :(
Really? That got real pretty fast...
I was about to say it too.. miss the guy!
Ert Kat I miss him too 😢.
Ha, used to love going to Rose's when I was in Chicago, highly underrated, which I think is what kept it cool, miss that pool table
I lived on Wrightwood and Sawyer and used to go to Lula's all the time (this was 2012~). Glad to see they're still thriving!
More of these! I miss them
1 of the best episodes. Really enjoyed
These guys seem great as well. Lovely decent chefs and foodies xxx
I’m amazed with the variety of dishes.
My dude was flexing on everyone with that omelette.
This was LEGIT! Loved it!!!!
Amazing thing about dining is that you can have two vastly different mind-blowing experiences I remember tasting the Dover Sole amongst other dishes at 11 Madison as part of set menu one of the most expensive meals I've ever ate that blew my mind and I also remember eating tacos Al Pastor in Mexico City for tacos for 20 pesos and I still dream about those tacos. I must have ate about 20 of them.
The fat rice food looks incredible. Looks like that fusion of cultures could be my absolute favorite flavors!
Glad that Munchies is doing my hometown!
Yes. Great job munchies!!!!
As a Portuguese American man, I love seeing any version of our cuisine being highlighted because in the states unless your in San Jose, CA or the various places in Mass you just dont see it often. I got way to stoked off of the Sardines at the end.
Lula Cafe is one of my favorite spots in the city. Highly recommended
One of the best chefs night out
Yeah, this was one of the best ones
Haha this popped up on my recommended list. Love u guysssss!
Fffffff everything looks so good. Havent gotten to spend much time in chicago, hope to eat my way through soon!!
Looks incredible
this was amazing!!!!
Love the chef’s of Fat Rice vision they are very daring
Mre chefs night out please. love this series
Wow Malört snaps! Did not think it would get outside of Sweden.
That's because a Swedish dude founded Jeppson's. Frankly, I don't get it. Malort is to akvavit as diarrhea is to hot chocolate.
That was awesome!!
Damn, so far they have done a pretty dece job of capturing Chicago in this era. Love it.
That’s the real chefs night out kinda stuff !
Great episode
Holy hell, I definitely need to go to Chicago.
Dude sounds like Vin Diesel
Hipsters Night Out. Much more appropriate name.
This was a fun one
Wish my monday's were like this lol
Anyone else getting a Bourdain vibe from this guy? Give us more of this guy.
please do more in Chicago!!!!!!
Only been to Lulas once! And I grew up in Logan square! I live about 2 hrs north of there now, but after watching this, I think I need to take a trip back!
This food looks great
I wish you guys would get up to Boston for some episodes
The chef is the most genuinely fun guy on any American CNOut. Most are boring sticks in the mud.
I can't even cook toast when I'm drunk... top effort!
Lmao it’s wild to see how much has changed since this video for these dudes, apparently the head chef dude in this video Abe was super racist and bullied a bunch of his employees. Some wild times man
No way lol
Its true
This food looked so good I’d love to eat there
I know this episode was focused mainly on Abe but I felt that this video should've captured more of the relationship and chemistry between both Abe and Adrienne specifically since they ended up working together but also ended up building this business "Fat Rice". Of course I know it was Abe's motivation to start this gig but to acknowledge Adrienne's interest to join along his journey and to hear from it would've been more admirable and enjoyable.
U kno got talent when ur hammered and still makin quality meals
Bakery opens at 8am... LOL!
9:28 - HAM AND BUTTER. Wtf, never would I have imagined such a dish existed. Sounds kinda like a perfect drunk snack though, especially with a pickle in the middle.
BenRangel its absolutely delicious
adrienne could get it fo sho
Brett Carroll fr
Haha for real homes
She can get that fsho!
Bang tidy
PIG
Wish I was there!
The bartender at Rose's is the clear winner of this episode
16:41 took me out😂
those duck frites daaaammnnn
this was nice
More chicago chefs please
My friends and I take bottles of malort to any city we go to
that duck with the fries and the omelette omg
These guys know how to party.
Bring back chefs night out
This dude Abe has a vibes! Get him hosting a show
That dude was drunk as hell and just kept bar hoppin and cooking great food all night.
Now I'm hungry. 😋
His voice is eerily similar to Bourdain's
The food look delicious but I couldn't stop looking at those glasses!
Yo that's Hao Jian at 15:18! Egg, starchy stuff and oysters stir-fried with lard; super unhealthy but oh so wonderful after a long night out. I thought the dude was a little hipster at first, but it's one of those things that you can only try to cook if you've had it and he does a pretty close rendition from what I see. Nice to see some of my hawker favourites being made halfway across the world.
fire
I was living in Chengdu around the same time these guys were there. and im from Chicago lol
This is one of my favorite ones and ive watched about 40 of them
Those weird bottles would make great bongs
so many of the Korean American chefs at the end lol
coincidence they were all hanging out?
"hipster" is now officially the biggest blanket term on fucking earth
Every time he say's Portuguese, take a shot. Internet drinking games!
that Mullet Though
13:19 Golden Years - David Bowie
Settling in to watch this with a biig glass of water 😢
Why the hell have I never seen a Macao-style restaurant before?
The combo of Portugese quisine (some of the best shellfish dishes ever imo) and Chinese quisine seems like it would appeal to a lot of people.
nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where's the Pizza Show gone?
Just get a polish sausage and a beer in Chicago, you're good
my neighborhood!
I KNOW that ginger tofu tastes so fire
0:45 Whoa whoa! I didn't know Dee Snider from Twisted Sister ate at Fat Rice!
This is fucking awesome.
Why do these videos come out every time i am fking hungry
Holy shit this episode looks good. Portuguese and Chinese huh? How neat
This chef’s voice is just like the late Anthony Bourdain
Ahh yes. Logan Square where you can find all the vegetarian hipsters
i heard from multiple inside sources abe is one of those classic angry chefs :( charlie trotter style
The hammeredness starts at 8:13
For those who aren't swedish, Malört is kinda pronounced like "mahlert". Think the word "alert" but with an M in the beginning.
whats the waterfall drink they are doing at 9:00?
