    What the review fails to address is that when the motor is mounted to the head, it puts the weight far from your body and causes twice the fatigue. As for dust extraction, with a half decent vac, my porter cable will suck itself to a wall...
    Porter cable is a fiberglass pole and aluminum head mount, the festoon is plastic...
    My opinion is you can pay for the name and a bag... or just buy a tool that works extremely well (7 years now) for half.

      That's a good point, I have the Planex easy and it definitely does cause a lot of fatigue, and I'm thinking now that could be the reason.
      I'm always hearing good things about the PC from guys who have both, I'm thinking getting one at some point.

    Thanks for the review! I am sold and will purchase the Festool knowing now that I know the motor is directly mounted and it has better dust suction. I currently have the Porter-Cable but feel it suffers from lack of power at times.

    I used both and own the porter cable. I like the porter cable better. It's more balanced and I get the pads at home depot tool rental and they even sell the sanding screens there too. The fest told does have a better articulation . I never need to go past the second speed on both of them. They both work really good

      I've used Porter but not Festool. Does the Festool do better with dust extraction?

    • @davidlopata7532
      @davidlopata7532 5 років тому

      @@deputyja1 I would say about the same. The full head must be on the wall 100%. So if you doing around a open door way and the head is of the wall a little bit they will both throw dust everywhere. The most important part is the vacuum. I us the ridgid wd 1956 16 gallon stainless steel. With the good hepa filter "it says for drywall dust" from home depot its like $32 and i use the bags with that filter. Double protection!

    Thanks for that vid I've been thinking of getting the planex vac combo, what is your opinion with the suction on the festool planex vac combo that they talk about in thier demonstrations is its any benefit at all or is it just a gimmick

    • @drywallnation
      @drywallnation  6 років тому

      A bit of both. it can hold itself to the ceiling, but you can't really work like that. The combo is awesome though. If you buy the Planex you're going to need a good dust extractor anyways, so may as well get the one made for it. Its the combo we've been using for years now.

    You mentioned sanding popcorn ceilings. Have you had success removing popcorn ceilings by sanding as opposed to wetting and scraping? I have a project coming up that involves removing popcorn on cathedral ceilings and think there would be less damage if you do not have to wet.

    • @drywallnation
      @drywallnation  6 років тому

      Sanding popcorn ceilings works great, especially if it hasn't been painted. An unpainted popcorn ceiling will come off fast and easy with a power sander, and usually the ceiling will just require a skim and be perfect. . if its painted it won't go as fast but still works awesome

    • @zachwagner1838
      @zachwagner1838 5 років тому

      Also forgot to mention that the ceilings should probably be screwed off. Depending on when the house was built, they use to hang sheets with nails. So 70 and 80s for sure.

      Chris Fallon ,you can scrape the majority with a 14"or larger blade and some touch up, with minimal pole sanding. Or get one of these grinders and make a hell of a mess. Good luck on yer choice. Sorry nobody answered you before now.

    Carlos Havens is full of it. These are indespinsible when going level 5 over a heavy knockdown or orange peel. Especially if its high volume and high ceilings. Half the time and half the fatigue. Which is the goal in the design of all Fesstool products. Ask any career, journeyman finisher abt his shoulders and he will begin to talk about torn rotators and or bursitus, just overall destruction of the joint. One thing only is the culprit. Sanding. Overhead especially. Shocker I know. As for any scratches or whatever left by sander is easily delt with by applying one coat of Prep Coat or a similar product. Any finisher worth his salt would be doing that anyway. But what do I know Ive only been doin this for 30 years.

    How bias can you get. This wasn't a review it is a passive-aggressive advertisement. This guys a joke. Both are equal in power. The Festool has the motor at the head, so it feels heavier ( center of gravity issues ) When it comes down to it- personal preference.

    Sanding ain't that hard, these things are overkill. If a "popcorn ceiling is painted just go over it with 1/4" rock or mud it. If not it scrapes with ease. There are sanding companies that charge 3 cents a foot. What I'm saying is the best way to become a good finisher is by sanding yer own work. Yer not grinding welds

    • @renaissancemen1

      Sounds like someone can’t afford the Festool. Sanding isn’t hard, however it is messy. Working in new construction, who cares. Nobody lives in the home. If you are a remodeled or work in occupied spaces, it is almost necessary to use dust collection on the job site.

      Renaissance Man , I'm a finisher, not a grinder. I have worked in hospital trauma floors and E.R.floors that had 0 tolerance for dust and paint fumes. One remodel was at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Tejas. Where JFK died. I have worked in every state,and have been fortunate enough to work with some of the best finishers in the trade, overtime I learned to be a very good finisher as I dislike sanding immensely. I have walked onto a job or 2 and saw a couple of Y T VIDEOS of these things in action. I couldn't believe the mess these grinders make. Something has been done wrong if a guy has so much mud on the wall that he needs to grind it before texture,this isn't made for smooth wall. The price is irrelevant I wouldn't accept 1 if you gave it to me and offered to grind every job I had. And if you bid on any work, even a garage and mentioned yer grinder, no matter how cheap you work for you wouldn't get any work from me or anyone across the country that I know in the trade. I've talked to quite a few contractors and shared the a few vids with the grinder in action, same response across the board. I have nothing against Canada but this looks like something made popular N. Of the border, alot of strange ideas come outta there . anyway keep practicing, a little common sense and someday you'll get it. I would explain the easiest way to a dust free job, but I appreciate the process more because I had to figure it out early in my career. It's not rocket surgery, I'll help with one item, it is a pole sander attachment for a shop vac, but as we know Trauma and E.R.are not only dust free but noise free also. Until then happy grinding and clean up.
