    When I first started my deconstruction, I had my own “therapeutic blasphemy” moment. At the time, I didn’t know that this is what it was but the description is spot on. Basically alone in my car I whispered “Jesus Christ” to myself as a curse. Taking the lords name in vain. This was always a hard boundary for me and my family. We would say “oh my god” all the time but NEVER Jesus Christ. After that first whisper, I said it a couple more times with increasing confidence. And nothing happened. But the words lost their power over me. And that was a huge step

    I started with Satanism by reading the Satanic bible in 1985 at 15 in a small town in the midwest. It was the first time I read something with religious or spiritual connotations that made sense to me. I was then drawn to TST as it was not the libertarian version of Satanism that the COS is.
    It's sad though I live a little more than a mile from where Anton's wonderful Black Victorian used to stand. I drive by and see the the house that was erected and want to knock on the door and ask if the people have any idea of the history of where they live and what their house has blotted out.
    The modern day SF denizen has almost zero connection to the counter culture and radical beauty that the city once was---they would probably just say, they got the property for cheap and be proud that the Tech Bro Colonization is complete.

      Can you really have a black victorian as a Satanic HQ(With exception to TST HQ in Salem Mass)in a rural or suburban area in the US without the threat of potential violence? Meanwhile the wealthy and tech bro WFH peeps can live anywhere they choose. Most of our brick and mortar stores are closing because most are WFH and do all their shopping online.

      @@biogopherI think Jeremy is talking more about acknowledging the history. There are lots of buildings all over the country that are dedicated as landmarks that have some sort of special value due to the history associated with them. Sometimes even just putting up a plaque, there are subtle ways to help the next generations remember significant places and ideas that came before. In fact sometimes they aren't even real. Last summer my Dad went on a motorcycle trip and sent me a photo of him standing next to the white washed picket fence from Huckleberry Finn, which is not actually real, the book is fiction so it's just totally made up, but it still has cultural significance and celebrating that is perfectly acceptable in my view.

    I had a little pocket Bible that my grandmother had given me when I was about 7. I didn't believe in Christianity, but I kept it because it was a gift. When I found out what she had done to my father when he was a kid, I saw the pocket Bible on my shelf and was furious. So I burnt it. One thing that should be noted regarding pluralism, and tolerance in general:
    A tolerant society is only tolerant if it does not tolerate intolerance. As soon as you accept intolerance, you impact the tolerance of that society. If you accept more extreme acts of intolerance, like the idea of bombings, then you have an extremely intolerant society.
    I raise this point because many bastions of intolerance use the outcry against their intolerance to try to sabotage claims of tolerance by those who are acting to oppose various forms of bigotry.

    • @n484l3iehugtil
      @n484l3iehugtil Рік тому +12

      I've recently been introduced to that paradox's name: the paradox of tolerance.
      One thing I'm wondering about though, is that by throwing away that theoretical purity in the notion of "tolerance", it then becomes an important question what constitutes "intolerance", such that intolerance of intolerance is allowed and even encouraged. What stops intolerant people from justifying their intolerance by accusing their target of intolerance with intolerance? I think it can and has been used by far-right groups accusing the other side of doing it first.

      @@n484l3iehugtil The simple answer is to not view tolerance as a moral imperative, but as a social contract. At its core, tolerance is nothing more or less than the agreement that "I will allow you to live your life as you see fit, as long as it does not cause harm, as long as you agree to allow me to live my life as I see fit, as long as it does not cause harm."
      Intolerance is a deliberate refusal to accept those terms- "You must live your life the way that I think you should." Once that happens, the agreement is null and void, and the one who refuses to agree to the terms is not protected by the agreement.
      Basically, tolerance is offered as long as it is returned. The instant that another party deliberately chooses not to abide by the terms, no party is obligated to the other. As an example for this video, while I am not a part of TST, they are willing to allow me to live my life as I see fit, and so I am willing to let them live their lives as they see fit. Conversely, fundamentalist Christians are not willing to allow me to live my life as I see fit, and therefore, I am under no obligation to tolerate them unless and until they are willing to meet that basic agreement.
      Hope that helps resolve the paradox for you!

  • @meatharbor
    @meatharbor Рік тому +103

    I'd like to expand on a concept that was touched on around 25:30. I think Christians interpreting the destruction of the bible differently than the Satanists is rooted in a phenomena that isn't just exclusive to religion but applies more broadly to any ideology that deals with authority in general. Ideologies with an authoritarian bent tend to blame the things they see as problematic in the world on _people_ while more egalitarian ideologies tend to blame problems on _systems._ Just like Christians blame Satanists/secularists/"evolutionists" for the things they think are problems in the world, imperialists blame socialists, Nazis blame Jews, conservatives blame "leftists," the LGBT community, immigrants, etc. etc. On the other hand, Satanists place blame on the institutions and practices of Christianity moreso than individual Christians, socialists and anarchists place blame on systems of oppression like capitalism and imperialism and antifascists place blame on (obviously) fascism, racism and bigotry as a whole.
    I think this is where a lot of the misunderstandings about things like destroying a bible representing the destruction of Christian _people_ specifically rather than the symbolic destruction of a tool of an oppressive system comes from. Christians, viewing things from an authoritarian standpoint, just aren't going to be thinking about systems as separate from people. That'd challenge the very concept of sin by allowing for things like violating the commandment against stealing because a corrupt political and economic system forced you to steal food from a despotic oligarch to feed a starving child. The problem is with the corrupt system and not the person doing the stealing, but that's not an acceptable conclusion to draw in Christianity because the commandments come from an absolute authority and have no caveats.

      @@Ploskkky yes I can Firstly let's start with the following. The quran has been preserved down to the letter and this can be proven because to this day there is only one quran. If there were mistakes in copying that made it through. Then you would see many versions of the quran like you see with the Bible today. This means that the original message of the quran and the exact words have been the same. Next let's start with the actual proof. Firstly, the literary miracles: the quran has a level of eloquence that makes it so that it can't be replicated in quality. The quran has challenged people to produce a chapter let alone a book like it. (Objective criteria is used) but for 1400+ years. Not even the best arab poets could do it. Next, I'll talk about the scientific miracles, for example it talks about life coming from water or something along those lines. We now know everything is made up of cells. Which are mostly water. Another thing is the prophecies, for example rome being defeated but winning a couple years later. All of these prophecies have come true. All of this evidence leads us to the conclusion that there can be no possible author for the Qur'an other than allah. Muhammad (S.A.W) was an illiterate man in the desert 1400 years ago. He couldn't have known all this.
      I now challenge you to disprove my argument. An "easy" way to do this is to find a mistake or contradiction in the quran or find some other way the quran was created

I may never get over the stigma that hearing "Religion" stirs within me, and no matter how many times she tried to explain that they are not a Theistic Religion, I could never grasp that. I still can't, to be honest. To me, without the supernatural part, Religion becomes 100% synonymous with "Club". I understand the concept, and Lucien Greaves might be one of the most charismatic speakers I've ever seen, so I'm proud that I was able to meet some really cool people through TST. Although the last Saturnalia Celebration (for the local chapter, anyway) was... weird. I mean, even for the most progressive minded among us, a few segments were... unsettling. The only thing that I truly enjoyed when I went to church was that sense of community and belonging. Just so everyone is clear, I wasn't shitting on TST. I actually like the concept. I just want to clarify because I did meet a few members who mistook "I Love what you guys do and what you stand for, but I just don't personally want to officially join." as a personal attack or something. One of the problems I have found when you ridicule another's perspective or belief through a hypothetical spectacle.
    They take you seriously, when you in honestly mean the complete opposite. They REFUSE to see this.
    They want to believe the worse. They want their beliefs confirmed. They want to feel justified in their hatred, their righteousness.
    They believe they stand for good. Nobody else can stand for good unless you believe what they believe.
    When your beliefs start showing that you stand for good, this is exactly why they get upset about it. They feel they hold the monopoly on "good" or "Moral".
    They will intern paint it as a lie, to re-affirm their view, often with more feverish distain.
    I feel that this basically allows Christians to destroy their own values from within, keeping a false belief because it no longer reflects what it was originally.
    People will always show you who they are and what they stand for when you criticize what they believe.

In modern times, some people don’t call them myths anymore they/we call them, stories, testimonies, theories, assertions, or claims.
      The TV shows we watch with the characters and archetypes, climaxes and arcs that help portray certain facets of society, the testimony is that one person has of another person that they know that they are telling someone else as a cautionary tale, or to further help drive a point home, or our theories and assertions that use other facets of that field of study, that we already do understand to help fill the gaps between what we don’t using similarities, similes and metaphors. The Pluralism he's talking about made me think of ancient Greece. There was the Greek Pantheon with Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Ares, Hades, etc. But there were different temples and orders devoted to the various gods, but as far as I'm aware there wasn't generally dismissive or disrespectful attitude if one didn't follow your preferred god; it wasn't like you would deny the other's existence, rather you just had reasons to prefer your chosen god. That was a kind of pluralism, if under a large umbrella of the pantheon in general.
    Of course, I don't know just how prevalent the belief in the pantheon actually was, nor how respectful people were generally, so maybe I'm wrong about my impression.

      Rome was always at war and they never needed a religion. Same with America. The homosexuality thing is basically true but a lot of straight people just hate homosexuality. I would say the main cause of war is the lack of consensus on who should be the authority. India and thibet never go to war so the religious motive is easily debunked by real religions. In case you are wondering god is the authority and any time you want to go find god and obey you can. Til then you will live in a world where might makes right and people will threaten you with torture to make you obey. Satanists try to replace god with morality, but there will always be conflicts. Atheists try to replace god with science but science cant solve the issue of who should rule either. Hitlers, trumps and ghenghis khans abound in history.

There's some good nuggets of wisdom in there, but the man shouldn't be revered. He was a con man, (and not too kind toward animals) and was definitely a product of his time. I got more out of The Satanic Witch, which is basically a spooky self-help book for women. Keep on making awesome content! 🤟 I'm adding "Speak of the Devil" to my wishlist for sure :3

      The devil is literally just supposed to be the archetype of the prideful intellect that is a contrarian to the peace in a society,is an adversary or instigator of conflict instead of a resolver. Satanism literally tells you to do the thing and be OK with doing the things that will make you more like the archetype of the devil. A.k.a. prideful beyond all repair, believing that they know better than anyone else that dares oppose them, and are willing to instigate, cause drama attack and belittle that person.
      Satanists are good at playing semantics just like any human being in any field of study or “religion” that is trying to monopolize power for themselves while also manipulating the people who don’t know much about it. If you go back and look at their original beliefs and then you start following how they changed it overtime even if you start in modern times you can see within 10 to 20 years. They have been less open in the forefront with what they believe. And
      It used to be, “Satan wasn’t the bad guy. He was actually the good guy and you should believe in him.” Then it became “God and Satan aren’t real. God was just a tool used to manipulate people into not doing the things that Satan did”, which were actually good things.
      When in actuality, if you are doing good things you are a follower of God it says so in the Bible if you’re doing bad things you are a follower of the devil. It’s so clear that it’s not a matter of a label that you give to yourself or you give to someone else, but what’s in your heart.

      @King.Ambrose the satanic temple has never believed God or the devil are real, physical beings. Just like the church of Satan they belive individualism and religious freedom, and one of the things they most often speak out against is the blatant disregard for separation of church and state in the US. You're thinking of devil worshippers because you're talking like these organizations have been around for centuries but the satanic temple is only a couple decades old and Anton Lavey started the church of Satan in the late 60s, early 70s. These aren't ancient religions.

    4:30 it is very Western. In Japan, they’re said to “be born Shinto, marry Christian and die Buddhist.”
    Meaning they have Shinto birth and childhood traditions (as Japan started out Shinto), Christian weddings (they’re way cheaper than Shinto) and Buddhist funerals (death is considered unclean in Shinto, but natural in Buddhism). There’s no contradiction there.
    Likewise, in the Journey to the West, the Confucian Jade Emperor of Heaven has a Taoist sage on the payroll, and when neither of them can stop the rampaging Monkey King, they appeal to the Buddha…who traps Monkey under a mountain for 500 years no sweat. The author was Buddhist, but didn’t deny the other gods existed. They just weren’t as cool.

    • @Ajehy
      @Ajehy Рік тому +1

      It’s also a very modern notion in the west. Before that, the default assumption was that either every god everywhere was real, or that it was the same pantheon under different names. Egypt, Greece, and Babylon swapped gods like crazy, while the Romans claimed every deity was the same core group under different names. So Mercury was Hermes, Thoth, and Odin. Jupiter was Zeus, Amun and Thor.
      Christianity was a huge threat to Rome because it couldn’t just add Jesus to the pantheon (although several cultures, like Japan and the early medieval Norse did just that). Belief in the one god meant you couldn’t also pay homage to the gods of the state or the divine emperor. Plus, they preached the impending end of the world (many thought the Great Fire of Rome was judgement day) which was even more destabilizing.
      Note that Judaism didn’t pose the same threat-it was already ancient by the time of Rome, so it got by on a grandfather clause-and it was very insular. They didn’t proselytize to other citizens, or make grand self-sacrificing martyr displays.

    I personally always define religion as the glorification or deification of an idea. I do think some element of a god of sorts is involved at all times, just that what constitutes as a god isn't always clear. For example, I would say, the most practiced religion is, without question, that of money. Money is an idea, it's very much man-made. Money isn't coins or paper, nor is it numbers on a screen or data on a server. People with power decide the value of money, but those people only remain in power as long as they have enough money. Money has all the elements of a god, it has near absolute power, yet it doesn't have a consciousness. Very few of us question the power money has, but what is it really? You can say that despite of its power, it isn't anything physical or even metaphysical. All of its power is given by its believers. Without believers, it would cease to exist entirely.
    Anything that can be described in a similar way, is a god. The practice of granting power to such a concept, is religion. All religions have that same thing in common, that all the power it has, comes from those who believe in it.

    As an atheist studying satanism, there aren't types of satanism. This is a myth born of a lack of understanding. Prior to 1966, no religion existed that called itself, Satanism.
    What now tries to brand itself as spiritual or theistic satanism is devil worship. It's people who believe the Christian fables and choose to worship the losing side in that belief system. The term, satanism, was a prejorative, an accusation, mostly levied by the church, against those that they decried as enemies.
    Anton LaVey created what is specifically Satanism (which is a non-theistic religion of the self) with the creation of the Church of Satan (as no prior religion identified this way). They're atheists who see Satan as a literary figure that best represents them. They have numerous books on the topic, and plenty of information on their website.
    Satanism is apolitical. Satanists come in literally every political stripe, and never does the religion take part in political actvism. If an individual Satanist holds a view strongly enough, he, she, or they may (and do) take whatever lawful action that they feel is necessary without forgetting the highest law, self-preservation.
    TST's antics are humorous on the surface but ultimately self-defeating. Let's go put up religious monuments on government grounds to challenge religious monuments on government grounds! It's a joke that wears the name of satanism, which anyone who bothers to dig and do their own reading can see for themselves.
    I could go on about how they're (TST) a PAC masquerading as a religion, but the main takeaway is that no, none of these other groups were ever self-described as Satanism. The other groups are dark Christians who worship the devil, or PACs playing at being Satanists without knowing what Satanism is. The fact that this self-deacribed "expert" calls these other groups Satanists calls his supposed expertise into question.
