It is one of the best books I had ever read at the time.
I was a teenager in Alabama during the infamous “Satanic Panic” era. I was also a very nerdy and rebellious teenager who had actually read almost everything about all theology by the time I was 13. I was labeled as so many ridiculous things by people who had ZERO clue what any of these books actually said. Most of my friends knew the deal and the kids that didn’t could easily be gotten rid of by simply playing “Stairway To Heaven”. They were convinced that it was subliminally inviting the devil into their lives or some shit.

The Satanic Temple has 7 tenets:
    I
One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
    II
The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
    III
One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
    IV
The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.
    V
Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.
    VI
People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
    VII
Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

"The Revolt of the Angels" has had a significant cultural influence, particularly in French literature and philosophy. It is considered one of Anatole France's most important works and a masterpiece of French literature.
The novel's exploration of free will and rebellion against authority has resonated with many readers and has been seen as a precursor to existentialist and surrealist thought. Its critiques of traditional institutions and values, such as religion and politics, have also been influential in shaping modernist and postmodernist literature.
In addition to its literary influence, "The Revolt of the Angels" has also inspired other forms of art, including music, theater, and film. For example, the French composer Florent Schmitt wrote an opera based on the novel, and the American filmmaker D.W. Griffith adapted it into a silent film in 1918.

Its still Christian monotheism just turned on its head. Demons are not Fallen Angles and they are not the evil spirits of the Hebrew Bible!
"Daimon or Daemon (Ancient Greek: δαίμων, "god", "godlike", "power", "fate")[1][2] originally referred to a lesser deity or guiding spirit such as the daimons of ancient Greek religion and mythology and of later Hellenistic religion and philosophy.[3] The word is derived from Proto-Indo-European daimon "provider, divider (of fortunes or destinies)," from the root *da- "to divide".[4] Daimons were possibly seen as the souls of men of the golden age acting as tutelary deities, according to entry δαίμων at Liddell & Scott.[5] See also daimonic: a religious, philosophical, literary and psychological concept.
Daimons are lesser divinities or spirits, often personifications of abstract concepts, beings of the same nature as both mortals and deities, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature, or the deities themselves (see Plato's Symposium). According to Hesiod's myth, "great and powerful figures were to be honoured after death as a daimon…"[6] A daimon is not so much a type of quasi-divine being, according to Burkert, but rather a non-personified "peculiar mode" of their activity.[citation needed]
In Hesiod's Theogony, Phaëton becomes an incorporeal daimon or a divine spirit,[7] but, for example, the ills released by Pandora are deadly deities, keres, not daimones.[6] From Hesiod also, the people of the Golden Age were transformed into daimones by the will of Zeus, to serve mortals benevolently as their guardian spirits; "good beings who dispense riches…[nevertheless], they remain invisible, known only by their acts".[8] The daimones of venerated heroes were localized by the construction of shrines, so as not to wander restlessly, and were believed to confer protection and good fortune on those offering their respects.[6]
One tradition of Greek thought, which found agreement in the mind of Plato, was of a daimon which existed within a person from their birth, and that each individual was obtained by a singular daimon prior to their birth by way of lot.[6]
In the Old Testament, evil spirits appear in the book of Judges and in Kings. In the Septuagint, made for the Greek-speaking Jews of Alexandria, the Greek ángelos (ἄγγελος, "messenger") translates the Hebrew word mal'ak, while daimónion (δαιμόνιον; pl. daimónia (δαιμόνια)), which carries the meaning of a natural spirit[citation needed] that is less than divine (see supernatural), translates the Hebrew word shedim as well as the word se'irim in some verses and words for idols (foreign deities), and describes the being Asmodeus in the Book of Tobit.[9] The use of daimōn in the New Testament's original Greek text caused the Greek word to be applied to the Judeo-Christian concept of an evil spirit by the early second century AD."

A stronger rebellion against Christianity would be to bypass it by not even acknowledging it through embracing what it opposes.
Embracing Satan acknowledges the power of "god".
Embracing older/different ways, erasing and ignoring Christianity is a stronger way to embrace the "satanic" ideal.

I got a job at a Christian organisation, and my supervisor turned out to be for me the caricature of how religion makes someone a self rightous, judgmental hypocrite. She would go on about how she knew how to rearly pray and how "God is god of order", she used to to justify continually micromanaging and slandering me to the CEO.
I went to the CEO and my church pastor very unhappy and they both emphasised submitting to authority. I then caught both the supervisor and CEO lying, to each other, and to me when i raised it.

Hey man, I hope you understand that this women if she had treated you wrongly did not abide by the Lord's commandment for loving your neighbor as yourself. This is not God's way to berate, lie, abuse, and ignore you nor is it how God is described in the Bible. The church is just a congregation of like-minded individuals and if they are not following the Lord's commandments then I would argue they A) Need to re-evaluate or B) Are not Christian, C) A combo of aren't a Christian and use the Church for power(power corrupts).
I urge you to look deeper and stray away from Churchs who do not have the values of the Lord, and I know this might suck but you might have to read the Bible to see what exactly I mean. I have had plenty of friends who have been turned away from Christ because of the Church and I once again want you to know that is not God. He loves you so very much to the point its incomprehensible, your fellow neighbor may not have the same love for you, that is in our nature, we are humans, in-perfectible in nature. It is best to adhere to the laws of the Lord as best we can to attain as close to a "perfect" nature as possible.
I promise that what the Jesus teaches is about as close to non-judgemental as it gets, we are called to love one another regardless of job or struggles with sin. I myself have sinned many times and will sin more, but I made a promise to the Lord that I will try to do better and reduce the amount of sin in my life.

I've been a practicing Witch for 48 years, and only recently "came out " 2 years ago at age 60, for that very reason: I didn't want people to be afraid of me, or to think I was mentally incompetent. I am overjoyed at the acceptance, tolerance, and more often than not, interest I am met with! This could never have happened 30 years ago. We truly are evolving!

I joined the Army Infantry in 05 as a still somewhat practicing Mormon. In bootcamp to duty stations and all the way to Iraq 2007 I served with my Army brother who was a Satatinist. We maybe brought up religion/Faith maybe one time. Outside of that, are bond was as strong as Iron. He would occasionally yell out a "Hail Satan" to me and I would respond with a smile. Sadly, in April 2007, my Brother in Satan was killed by a sniper we were hunting. And the last I seen of him was carrying his lifeless body to the Black Hawk to give the "Final Salute". But he is from Los Angeles like I am so I am able to go visit him.I stopped going to church after the war. Recently all these years later and admitting myself to PTSD treatment at the VA, supernatural events started to occur so I took to the solitude of the woods for prayer as I found myself looking to Jesus saying "I am trying Lord, but why does my heart love my Brother in Satan more than it loves your Angels?" And a voice responded saying " John chapter 15 verse 13." To any Satanist out there that is reading this, our Champions name, was Jason Morales. K.I.A April 18th 2007 Baghdad Iraq. 1st Battalion 28th Infantry. If you ever find peace to practice your Faith in American society, it will be because of heroes like Jason. As Jesus told us, we're supposed to pray for those who wish harm upon us, that they're hearts may change to more peaceful ways. Now, you're brother in arms, the satanist, you love, it doesn't matter he was a satanist, we're not supposed to love only those who love us or are the same as us. So your love is not wrong. You saw him fighting for you, perhaps saving your life or risking his. But what we don't see are the angels & demons at work. The more faith & love you have for GOD, the more you will feel angels on your side, steering you from danger. However if we give into the temptations of demons, the less angels can help us if we've given authority to demons instead of angels. Every sin we make was a demons work, he plants the thought & we decide to carry it out through free will. Anyone can be redeemed, just ask GOD for forgiveness, confess our sins for we're not perfect & sin without even knowing it sometimes. I'm reaching out to you because the Holy Spirit told me to, I don't write this much on comments. Maybe this will answer some of your questions or remind you that you're in GODs grace, and your military friend too. RIP

But on the other hand, humans are inherently sinful and corruptible because they are not God?
To my thinking, it has two possible answers that would not be entirely in conflict with the Christian philosophy: either God did not create us, just came along to sheperd us at some point; or He once was just as vulnerable and faillable as us, but then transcended it, and now is trying to teach us to do the same.

I'm not so sure about that last part. Absolute power is ridiculously hard to use responsibly even if you wanted to, and in general, the desire for that power can be a corrupting influence as well, but over all, power is not the only thing that shapes who we are. I would not want to wield absolute power; I would regard it as a burden and a responsibility that I could not possibly live up to. The people who would see it as desirable, meanwhile, are those who would see wielding power as a benefit in itself. Anyone who does that is not going to wield it responsibly. To put it another way, power is most appealing to the corrupt. Anyone who would _want_ that level of power is someone that the rest of the world very much would want to not have it. Anyone who the rest of the world would want to hold that power would view it as a horrific burden and a source of alienation, and probably would not be able to handle the burden for long. To put it yet another way, to be able to hold such power, one must be or become corrupt and uncaring. Anyone who is not so will abdicate, until eventually someone who is corrupt takes that position. While I am reluctant to identify myself as belonging to any particular ideology, doctrine, tradition etc, mythological or otherwise, there is none I have discovered that I feel such internal resonance with than the Promethean principles expressed by Anatole France in the masterpiece that is Revolt of the Angels. I feel that TST has beautifully and intelligently adapted the message of the text into an overarching guiding ethical and rational framework embodied in abstraction by the Eternal Rebel. I feel such kinship with this archetypal spirit and deeply appreciate the work you put into this video. As a fellow ex-christian it was moving to watch. Thank you for helping others to understand more clearly the widely misunderstood figure of Satan as he is embraced by TST and like-minded people. The values he represents are to my mind so integral to the achievement of true liberty and human flourishing. Much much love, hail Satan and be well ❤

Getting kicked out of Sunday school when I was 6 for having the audacity to ask why Satan was the “bad guy” for testing and punishing the wicked. Well, after calling my teacher an ignorant b*#%! After she called me evil and kicking me out I knew our definition of evil wasnt the same. I’ve been confused since so I give fealty to nothing but myself. Safer that way. Honestly, if Santanist ever wanted to, they could adopt and make the "Book of Enoch" canonical, (I have been upset at Christianity for not making that book cannocle for years despite its relevance to the actual bible.) Since the literal fact that it talks about the first falling of the angles before the rebellion, the first witches, and the nephelim which are apparently giants, and how that may or may not be related to giants in the roman mythology

First book of Enoch is the only one found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. The word Grigori is what turns into Giant over time, but the translation means Watcher. The Watchers who come with Shemihaza give gifts that are identical to the gifts given by the gods at the wedding of Zeus and Pandora (Sorcery, Swords and the like). Aza then rebels against Shemihaza when Shemihaza sets himself up as Elohim. Aza gaining the title of Lord (El) and becoming Azael shows how the ancient people appreciated his defiance against the Malevolent One (Elohim or Yaldabaoth).
The book of Job is very mistranslated and depicts Satan and the Sons of Elohim trying to turn Job away from Yahweh and to turn to Elohim.
There is an argument that Yaldabaoth (Elohim) and Yahweh (God) have been mixed to the point that no one should tell you how you should live or pray when they themselves don't even know Elohim isn't Yahweh.

the satanic temple is NOT a religious organization as they have nothing to do with satanism.
TST was created as a ''fake religion'' for a mockumentary that was titled ''the satanic temple'' and Lucien greaves was the casting director.
they use satanism and satanic imagery to gain attention and the POLITICAL organization TST is now a cashgrab.
to further this claim is that their website claims they don't believe in a literal satan but when the TST website was created in 2013 it was SPECIFICALLY created to worship the devil.
Lucien himself has also stated that TST is satire and a ''darker yes men.''
the ONLY correct satanic organization is the Church Of Satan as their former leader Anton LaVey codified the religion of satanism in 1966, and there are several academic studies proving that. the Church Of Satan does not condone what TST does nor do they accept TST as a satanic organization

It's meant to be shocking, and confusing. It helps to point out the hypocrisy of the dominant religion when they lobby for equal representation in public spaces. A Satanic display is exactly what Christians would not want displayed publicly, and yet under law they must accept it. It's not as effective a troll if their symbol is something else. However, the image of Satan is culturally so fraught, I can't help but wonder if it's a mistake. I do not believe Satan is a real entity, but I personally do not want to be wearing a symbol of evil personified as a badge of honor.

Ultimately, many Christians believe Atheists and Humanists are just Christians who are pissed at Jesus because they just love sinning so much. Declaring yourself a Satanist however carries much more weight for them because it means you are a Believer, but you play for the other team. You are the enemy, your soul is owned by Satan and you are actively working against them in their Spiritual War. TST isn't trying to get Christians to understand their point of view but respect it.

I really like the idea that Jesus and Lucifer were originally both referring to the same person or concept. Lucifer meaning shining one or light bearer and Jesus saying he is the light in the book of john. That sin (anything against god) is necessary, as god is what brought evil into the world and allowed it to take root. While really this has no evidence to stand on besides the romancing of such ideas, it makes much more sense to me that the rebel against god is the same person (or concept) that rebelled against societal thinking (i.e. hanging with prostitutes, lepers, and caring for the poor).
Honestly it wouldnt surprise me if over many years we completely mistranslated everything even past the dead sea scrolls and these books tell entirely different stories from the original traditions, maybe never being intended to be religious at all. Would love to see a modern take revolving around this idea.

I think the way I see TST is they are one of two things. A place for, or a stepping stone between people who were religious to/and those who aren't, so they can transition without the immediate lack of any ceremony or belief at all. For people who love the community, the good done, and/or the ceremony of an organized religion, but have fallen out of love with a god of any kind. People who want to live for themselves while helping others who can't do just that, to do just that. I would join but I don't need the crutch as I have never really believed in a god. I researched many religions in hopes of actually believing in any of them but at the end of the day, the rituals felt immature or silly to me. I felt ridiculous preying and talking to myself at night. I felt so silly laying there pretending I could have an out-of-body experience, when the most I was doing was causing my eyes muscle strain while they were closed from looking upward too far. I felt uncomfortable with biblical verses, or singing from the Torah... it all just felt so, wrong. So I don't feel like I need something like TST personally.
That said, I do love what they're doing for their communities, the people who do need them, and society in general with how they fight against an impending theocracy. It helps that I live in Canada, but honestly, we're only a step or so behind the US in everything going to proverbial hell so...

I am an anti theist, meaning I believe we are better off without religion, having said that, I believe as well this goal should be achieved by reason, not by force. I am not going to try to convert religious people, but I hope to be a spark for them to leave their religious beliefs behind, if they're willing to discuss it.

Yeah. It’s frustrating, and I especially struggle dealing rationally with religion all around me, but we cannot win through force.

OK but "Goth ACLU" is a better brand than many world religions.
Jokes aside, this was an incredible deep dive. I can appreciate the literary and intellectual connections between Anatole France and later developments, I had no idea that this work was revered as such. How neat.

I actually haven't really heard of this book. I DEFINITELY want to give it a read now. I generally like Satanism. I was personally very moved by The Satanic Bible. After I left Catholicism I was able to fairly easily move on from a lot of its teachings and had made some good progress by the time I picked up The Satanic Bible. The Satanic Bible just helped knock off some of the more stubborn bits of useless mental debris I had collected from Catholicism. It's an amazing book and I really could recommend it to anyone but particularly for ex Christians. It just really helped me really let go of Catholicism more fully. Reading it doesn't mean you should or will be a Satanist. It's just a great pallet cleanser. And I do still hold some of the idea from that book. Very empowering and self loving. Self-respecting.

I dig what you’re saying and I completely agree except the church of Satan (satanic Bible) has literally nothing to do with this book by the satanic temple!! They actually don’t support TST at all so pls don’t get them confused !!

But even if you don't think about religion at all, this book is quite intriguing on a purely philosophical stance.

I’m glad it’s available since I almost exclusively listen to books, but the performance seriously lacked. It is public domain so I’ve thought about producing an audio version of my own, but with someone more professional than me narrating.

If you haven't read it yet, I recommend Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. They keep trying to make it into films/tv shows. Forgo all that and just read the books. The ending of the third book is incredibly poignant and relevant to this video.

TST is kinda weird for me. On one hand, I’m not sure if I can bring myself to join the actual organization given some bad/questionable things I’ve heard about its top leadership. On the other hand, I agree with basically everything TST teaches and I found this video extremely encouraging and inspiring.
Regardless, I’m glad that there are people like Dex and Chalice to discuss these ideas and I definitely feel myself being drawn closer to Satanism as time goes by. I’ll definitely have to read the book!
