Hi Roger I slide mullet alot for Mulloway or Kob as we call it in South Africa and managed to catch a 10kg yesterday. I see you hook the fish behind the dorsal fin which I wouldn't recommend especially if there is current. Try hooking it the same way but just behind the skull bone, the meat is nice and tough there and that way the fish is much easier to slide, more streamline and it's head will always face into the current. Even better you can use 2 hooks, one behind the skull and another by the tail as Kob/Mulloway tend to grab the fish from behind, well that's my experience.
Another great thing to use is a tooth pick. Take the tooth pick and break off a scale just towards the head from the dorsal fin going length ways down the body, then put your hook just under the tooth pick. Less damage to the mullet and the head then looks up the line as an anchor so the fish always faces into the current. Having a second hook by the tail is a good idea 👍 The other way I have tried but haven't hooked anything yet is a cable tie through the eyes (left to right) and then you cable tie your hook to the head... Greater chance of your bait staying into current and staying alive ,👍
Rule of thumb for me is to give the rod 100 continuous wiggles right from the start. Point the rod tip straight up and wiggle. It moves the non return slide every-time you wiggle, the fish swimming down the aids the slide.
His rod seems too soft/light action. Better option would be to increase the length of the trace line on the slide (the trace line is very short in this video anyway). Fish has more line to play with to gradually take the non-returnable slide to the o-ring.
A reasonable sized crane swivel clip attached to your rig would be a less cumbersome way of sliding. They always worked perfectly for me and are quick to clip on to your main line
Next time you’re going to connect the slider, take your bucket of water and mullet to the rod holder, bring your rod down and connect with mullet still in the bucket to keep it fresh then pull your line tight to pull the mullet out the bucket and gently shake the tip help it slide down your main line and keep the line tight as you set your back in the holder, incredibly important to ensure your break away sinker is well set.
Roger, Temu has these amazing LEF glowsticks for really cheap. Amazing things and great quality. Can even get ones with rechargeable batteries and even ones with a combined bell. Highly recommend them!
Hi Roger, in England most fishermen would be envious of your ability to catch fish at the rate that you do, our beaches are not as productive as those in Oz.
Not all beaches here are that productive. From the vids he posts it seems Sydney is a great spot for fishing. He does better than I have ever done on the beach although I've found a good river on the Sunshine Coast in S E Queensland
Subscribed about a week or two and not only have you taught me a-lot but you have e also inspired and motivated me to fish and enjoy the water and nature more also so thank you and looking forward to more great content from you Roger ! Also if you happen to read this it would be amazing if you gave us a tour and run through of all your gear for us beginners and Im sure even the more advanced guys would appreciate it. Thanks again your a legend !
To help the mullet work it's way down the line on the slider. Walk the rod up current, so the fish is sliding down the line in the direction of the current.
Salmon ( kahawai here in nz ) are so underated.... biggest I've ever caught was 4.5 kg....on soft bait....took up the whole smoker....lol....( whip them through the tail for quick efficient bleed )..Often off the beach, I use a grapple sinker on 1m trace to a multi swivel then 1m trace with soft bait on a long shank 6.0 hook floating in the current.....👍
Hi Roger , love watching your shows and even at 70 , I'm still learning new things , can you please give me a list of all the terminal tackle used in making those slider rigs please
You should try out putting a keeper net with burley in it and tie it to your rod holder. Throw some old fish frames or pillies in it. You should also try using salmon as bait.
Hey Roger. Just asking why you don't tenderise the squid by beating it with a 'chokka' hammer. In South Africa for the Mulloway or Cob we beat the squid a bit to help release oils and smells.
I have found some of my best Mulloway were on the horrid beaches with heaps of swell, wind and white water and on the new moon. Not a comfortable way to fish mind you but they love it rough😂
Hi really enjoying your kids have you considered slide baiting live baits from jettys as I have a lot of success when I do it in south Australia for kingfish.
It would be an effort but I think making a video sometime comparing a slider rig with a traditional live bait rig would be interesting. Good luck catching your mulloway, I'm still looking for my first one.
Great fan Roger, question re the gang hooks on the pili, doesn't look there is much presentation of the barbs out of the bait, does this matter in terms of hooking the fish?
The idea is not to rely on the bait to swim out on a slide rig, next time stand "upstream" so you use the current to a certain degree and wiggle that rod to get the slide working. Small wiggles to start with but once he is down start doing bigger sweeps with the rod
I have to admit, with multiple rods and the distraction of presenting to a camera.. I feel like even during the daytime the bells might even be worthwhile... Jag a few Christmas-themed ones.. your present will be at the other end once you reel it in!
Hey mate, love your vids. My son and I always keeps arguing which beach you are at. I’m guessing you are a Burleigh heads local … if you can say or somehow include beaches you fish at we can try and replicate your successes. It’ll be greatly appreciated
Try a bigger range of motion with the rod as if you are setting the hook and not so rapid jerks. Imagine the bait is at the bend of the line and then you pull the line tight and it straightens and the bait slides, drop the rod tip so the line bends and pull tight repeat and so on…
While it is true you will get jew in the daytime and evening. Usually jew sit on the back banks of the beach in the daytime. Then at about 11 to 4 in the morning they come off the back banks and come in close to hunt. It's usually during those hours we get most of our fish. But whiting and mullet and bream that's mainly what there feeding on. Whiting in particular I've caught a lot of jew on live whiting but don't be shy to use bream because jew certainly will smash them
I tried slide baiting my local estuary. Mullet barely swam anywhere. I had same issue with sideways current and the fish wanted to swim sideways. Better off using a drone.
@@RogerOsborneFishing no dramas. I tried it again yesterday evening with a dead bait, trying to use the 'shake the rod' method. I reckon it would've worked after about half an hour of shakin, but aint nobody got time for that! It would've been quicker to paddle out my bait with a kayak... After I got sick of slide baiting, I caught some live mullet, cast them out with a bog standard running sinker setup, and nailed 3 mulloway in half an hour. I only managed 3 because the mullet were so hard to catch. If I could've managed 10 mullet, I would've caught 10 mulloway - no bait lasted longer than 5 minutes, never seen anything like it. Long story short - it aint broke so I won't be fixing it with slide baits.

Hey Rodger still enjoying your fishing video's watching from Port of hueneme beach California the Pescadores 🎣
Thanks David 😊👍
You’re going to catch Mulloway Roger.
I’m looking forward to this.
All he catches is salmon salmon salmon hahaha.
@@KermitTheFlogga He's on the right track salmon won't eat a big mullet. Just takes a slob to swim passed
Yes Alistair, I am expecting some good fun and eating.
Great video. I love how one squid bait can catch multiple fish. Little strips pull in mullet after mullet in my own experience.
Thanks 😊👍
How about a video on rod and reel care post fishing?
A reasonable sized crane swivel clip attached to your rig would be a less cumbersome way of sliding. They always worked perfectly for me and are quick to clip on to your main line
Thanks Justin, I will try it out!
@ they work a treat, and larger ones deal with leader knots well too.
@justinlambert4937 how large of swivel? I've found that it tends to twist while on the mainline, however I'm using braid as mainline usually.
@ I’d suggest a size 2/0 - mostly as this will allow a wide contact point on the line which allows it to slide easily
Thanks again Roger great video
Great session on the pesky salmon Roger . Good to watch your methods. Thanks👍
Glad you enjoyed it

Another good video Rodger 👍
How are the estuaries fishing in your area and will we see a video on estuary fishing anytime soon? Cheers
Yes Garry, more estuary vids coming up.
Hi. There is nothing better than large live baits.👍
I totally agree!
28:48 nice fish
To help the mullet work it's way down the line on the slider. Walk the rod up current, so the fish is sliding down the line in the direction of the current.
Very good fishing session
Thanks 👍
Niceee Roger, love these videos targeting bigger fish, inshallah a big one soon!
Can't wait!
Hi Roger! At 23:45 you seem to have forgot to clip the slider, I hope you could get it back!
Yes, I realized that.
Hello, one of your best videos.
I found it. 🙋🙂
Wow, thanks

So informative.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always take the bucket with water while you put your slider on. That way the mullet stays healthy.

Okay, I was not sure why you beat it but releasing the scent is a good idea.
Hi Nathan, any recommendations for tackle shops in the Western Cape?
I have found some of my best Mulloway were on the horrid beaches with heaps of swell, wind and white water and on the new moon. Not a comfortable way to fish mind you but they love it rough😂
Hey Roger, good video. Do you do in person beach fishing classes? If not, would you consider one I would be willing to pay for? Thank you mate
Great idea mate, i wonder the same thing. Would be a great way to interact with the viewers and a positive way to gain some experience for newbies 🎉
On his web sites.. had one recently... fun day I believe... not cheap
This dude hasn't even caught a Jewish.
Damn, its $530 for 3!! Didn't expect that much. At this point I should find one of his subscribers to coach me for free 😂
Yes, I do, I charge standard fishing guide rates.
Keep those big baits and bells ringing Roger, really exciting content.

Cool idea
I tried slide baiting last weekend. There is so much seaweed off Victoria's beaches it is really frustrating.
Seaweed is a pain.
Bought some lights from temu for night fishing clamp on rod like bells they are led light green glow like glow stick last about 15 hours on one charge
Thanks for sharing
Why don't you use the led lights from Temu they are so bright and the battery will last all night and they are rechargeable
Agree mate! They even have ones that also have a bell and even ones that go from green to red when you get a bite! Cheap as chips!
Great fan Roger, question re the gang hooks on the pili, doesn't look there is much presentation of the barbs out of the bait, does this matter in terms of hooking the fish?
Pilchard flesh is quite soft, I have never found it to be an issue.

Are advocating catch and release on salmon? If so, gamakatsu inline circle hooks catch fish in a safer manner. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🎣

I will check it out

Highest Coefficiency in some time. 🐟 🐠 🎣
Yes, I have been looking at the conditions.
How do you find that out please?
9:42 I find they swim better with a tie eye baiting, he won’t go in a straight line unless the hook in the head so they swim down.
Thanks Howie
The bells have a hole to place a glowstick in it
Do they? Sounds great!

Try putting bait attraction next time on your bait (squid)
You left a scale on the hook tip when you rigged that 2nd mullet, fatal error. Good vid mate.
Thanks for highlighting that.
been successful with catching jewies turn of the tide run out or in
When catching and keeping fish, it may help to marinate the new bait in fresh blood. It has worked for me ... not that I have been scientific.
I notice you don't use a braided line. Or maybe I've missed that video.
Stonker mullie next time
Thanks
Ps ebb of the tide
Thanks Howie, 👌
Sliders can be fun but where you are I would toss a live bait, big fish often come in close.
Okay

If you cut the top tail fin he can't dive down so he stays in the high water of the bottom
And visa versa
Also spray the rods from the tip to first eye with glow in the dark spray paint
Hi Greg, where do you buy glow paint?
Great video Roger. One day you will catch something other than Salmon on your ghost hunts 😂. Central coast has been on fire lately for ghosts
How you catching them
Thanks, mate, my brother lives near the entrance.
Videos not kids
Fact of life, big fish eat little fish nature can be deemed to be cruel.
The natural world is quite violent.
Jesus Roger you must be sick of catching Salmon? Goner have to start calling you the Salmon king.
Live baith seems too much for the fish I like you fishing a lot but maybe something nicer could be a bit better cheers mate
Live bait is very good for specific applications
