- "I am speechless", Josh Ritter (@joshritter) retweeted when he got the note that Bob Dylan sang 'Only A River' in Nagoya, Japan on April 20, 2023. And he added "I wrote that song in the stairwell of my dorm in college, 25 years ago. Music is a blessed traveler." Next day he tweeted "When I learned yesterday that Mr. Dylan had sung a song that I’d written, I was washed over with a feeling that that can only be described as a cousin of vertigo. So many songs, and all of them rambling around out there. Somehow, this one found Dylan’s pasture. How beautiful.
I wrote Only a River in my dorm in college. Like all my favorites, it came unbidden, and I just wrote it down. Many years later, as I got the amazing opportunity to work with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, this song rose to the top of the pack, asking to be let out the door.
I sent it to Weir and Josh Kaufman, who beautifully arranged and recorded and performed the song that Dylan eventually must have heard".
Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir released the song on his excellent 2016 solo album, Blue Mountain (Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros).

I was front row in Nagoya. I also saw Bob Weir do this song at Marin Veterans Auditorium ( possibly a debut) on the Campfire tour. I could not believe my ears when I heard this. It is very, very special to me.

If you have not listened to Bob Weir's Blue Mountain album, find an hour to kick back or take a drive and listen to it in full. That album is a high water mark for any and all of the massive amount of music Bob Weir has sent our way over the last 6 decades. It is epic. I live in the eastern Columbia Gorge in Oregon. I take late summer/autumn drives solely to absorb and listen to Blue Mountain in it's entirety while traveling in that late afternoon and early evening Kodachrome lighting, always driving out east just to come back listening and driving towards the setting sun in the west as equinox comes and goes. I look forward to those couple of autumn road trips I take to listen very specifically to the album Blue Mountain more than I do Christmas in these later years of my life. Thanks for all the uploads, neverendingbobfan. A rich blessing for all.
