  • During our trip to the West Coast, we decided to end our last two days at an incredible spot on the Pacific Coast Line. A stunning white abandoned mansion sits on a super busy highway right on the Pacific Ocean. It was built in the 1950's and has some nice architecture despite the inside being completely gutted. We haven't exploring any abandoned mansions so this was a treat for us either way. Its very rare to come across an abandoned mansion on the beach anywhere in the USA. We had an amazing sunset both days and got to hang out by the beach while we got to know our new exploring buddies while taking some incredible photos. It doesn't get any better than that!

    I lived and worked at this property for 6 months as one of the general contractors. I knew the owner and we became friends. A great person single and very generous. He lived in Beverly Hills and spent his weekends here in the main house on the beach. Once the apartments/bedrooms were finished the main house was taken down and a new residence was built. I lost contact with him in the early 90s. The only person he ever talked about was his mother and I just assumed he was an only child. He had some health issues in his eighties. He always showed up at the house on fridays in his yellow convertible rolls Royce with his chef and girl friends.

      ELIZABETH LOSEE did the house have a view before they built the neighboring homes? It seems like it would be one of those classic hollywood homes from the 20’s...also, any thoughts on it being haunted, considering its age??

    Be neat to see a general map showing where this is in Malibu. Like where to other homes like Johnny Carson. Perspective.

    Highly unlikely that a default on the currently unpaid property taxes would result in a “Sheriffs Sale” for back taxes - if there is a lien on it, besides taxes (ie mortgage, etc), no doubt that this party would pay them, as a last resort, to secure their status as a secured lien holder....

    The location is amazing! But the house itself looks extremely poor quality and cheaply constructed. I would never dream of paying $16 millions for a house that seems like it's just made out of cheap wood frame. This is a stick house which would normally be how a garden shed is built and not a multi-million $ mansion.
    If I was paying this kind of money I'd expect a properly constructed house made out of stone and bricks and solid concrete floors throughout.

      Wow, my father and I photographed this house when it was done in the mid 90s. My dad was an architectural photographer as I am now. The architect was a guy named Ernie Yoshino. It was an amazing house at the time. It had a lucite staircase that lit up in different colors. We stayed their while we shot it, in one of the suites located on the property. Each suite had a theme, and ours was “safari”. I believe the owner at the time was Elizabeth Taylor’s attorney. Pretty sad to see it like this, but it has been renovated recently.

So yes, theres a ton more i wish i could of done. I did the best i could with a hour at the location. I live 3 thousands miles away from this place. This isn't something that was planned for us to even shoot. We just threw this together the best we could before rushing to the airport and almost missing our flight. Owning ANY property that faces the ocean in Malibu is insanely priced. Even really expensive property is narrow and long. People build site barriers when possible. If the owners are really wealthy, they spend maybe a few months out of the year... Notice that this house has a limited amount of sand in front of it. This is the big issue: big storm hits, the ocean will win and the house most likely will be shortened.

    The mansion isn't really a mansion at all. It's listed on the county assessor's tax roles as a multi -family residential. There are two buildings on the property: The first one was built in 1957 and (renovated in 1990) and there are 4 bedrooms and 7 baths. That is the main residence. For a total square footage of 3,941. The second building was built in 1958 (renovated in 1965) and has 6 bedrooms and 6 baths. Six one bedroom units with 6 baths with 3040 sq. ft. For a combined total of 6,981 square feet.
    Sold in June 2015 for 14.5 million and current estimated value is $25,029,141. (WOW) $10.5 million appreciation since purchase. But they are having a hard time paying the taxes.... go figure. Property taxes were due as of February 1, 2018. And delinquent asof April the 10. Hope the checks in the mail.

Tragic story might had happened to this mansion :( moral of the story: don't buy huge properly like this because you don't know what life brings... bankruptcy or expensive sickness to a member of the family and then you can no longer afford the maintenance. How interesting I saw this in my news feed. I used to work for the City of Malibu years ago. We called this house the “Sea Shell House” due to the ginormous large hideous shell plastered on the front of the house. The house is located on Carbon Beach, AKA “Billionaires Row”. Here’s a frontal view - to the right of the house with the large green yard. www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=201309713&mode=big&lastmode=sequential&flags=0&year=2013

You might have to get on the intercom and say, "Hey honey I'm lost...come & get me" and your husband laughs as he climbs the stairs to rescue you from the guest room at the other side of the house. • @abandonedcentral
      @abandonedcentral  6 років тому +4

      I disagree with that statement. Every single abandoned building in the world sits on a property that is worth some type of money if that abandoned building is removed. Same in this case. This house has sat for years untouched. If the house wasn't there, the land would of been purchased right away and a new house would've been built.

      Of course this property has an owner, in the legal sense.... whether the structure on the property is inhabitable and can legally claim to have a certificate of occupancy from the local governing authority, is something totally different.... the property is not abandoned, but rather, it’s structure is not inhabited, no different than if the lot was nothing but raw/undeveloped land.... someone still has legal title to the defined lot

    • @abandonedcentral
      @abandonedcentral  6 років тому +1

      That is because everything is gutted out of the house.. The house obviously wasn't all wooden inside. Thats just the structure of the building. I personally think this house is amazing. We all have our own opinion. A rooftop jacuzzi on the beach is just incredible to me.

    • @patricec.2957
      @patricec.2957 6 років тому +1

      I agree that jacuzzi on the rooftop is great, but not when your neighbors who are five yards away can see what you're doing in the jacuzzi. After a wooden structure by the sea, I'm not sure that's the best idea.
      Finally there is a big difference between Europe and America when it comes to house building.

    • @abandonedcentral
      @abandonedcentral  6 років тому +1

      Its funny because the house across the street from this, not on the beach, is probably less money and is a huge mansion that sits on the top of a mountain. All the beach front properties in Malibu are very close together. As you get out of Malibu you start to see properties with more land on the beach.
