  • On a visit to Sacramento, CA, we met two ladies who share a friendship and passion for roses. A love of roses brought them together and they've been friends ever since. We had a great time talking to them and hearing their story and thought you would enjoy it also.

Thanks for the video, Beauty of friends. I'm new to roses because I live in Canada 🍁 and well, but the time has come, I'm encouraged. I have 2 rose bushes. I say they are really stubborn, not only because of the climate. I do protect them in the winter, but the truth is that I don't think my pruning is the best. So if you have a video where you can see that method, my rose bushes will be very grateful.

A beautiful friendship. Thank you for making this video. Yes, a garden tour of both gardens is a wonderful idea. We are “building up” our rose garden. Once you’ve got the bug, you cannot escape .... it would be great to see and learn the names of the most disease resistant roses that the two ladies grow.... thank you.
Organic fertilizer, yes. I do have problems with aphids in Southern California. I use 100 percent Neem Oil, mixed with a little dish soap, and pure cedar oil - all mixed together. It is a good idea to start with a little warm water at the bottom of the spraying bottle. This allows the Neem oil to properly dissolve before you add tap water. Aphids are found only on new leaves and new growth, which eventually lead to new rose buds ... flowers. If the aphids are left to their own devices, you will lose new buds; and therefore no flowers. I spray and then run my fingers, very gently, along the new leaves and remove the aphids.
I do find it quite a chore to have to be so diligent .... but the thought of the beautiful new blooms spurs me on.

I am very new to roses and have a question for the ladies (maybe they can ask the entomologist in their group). We moved into a new home that has lots of roses. My joy turned to a nightmare when all the roses were taken over by earwigs! I know that they are a beneficial insect for aphids but they literally attacked the rose centers and when I cut roses for bouquets in my home the earwigs, even though I dunked them in a bucket of water first, came out all over my house!! Then I UA-camd earwigs and did earwig traps, which helped a lot, but what can I do now in the winter to prevent this all out infestation this Spring? HELP!!!

We reached out to Linda and Charlotte. This is what they had to say - If it were me, I would make sure that I fully clean up the area this winter and rake away any debris. I would want the roses and other plants to be at their healthiest. I like to use alfalfa pellets after pruning. Most importantly, I would use a lot of organic mulch and fertilizer when the soil warms up, in order to encourage birds. Organic fertilizer such as Dr. Earth. Attracting predators through healthy plants and flowers. If the garden has not been organic (such as a lot of Miracle Gro and pesticides) it could take a couple of years to re-establish a garden for birds, pollinators, and other predators.
