Wow! That seems like a big garden instead of a small one as the title of the video states. It's beautiful. Very interesting.

The back yard is smaller than the images portray but big on plant material!

The lot size is 5,000 sf. You can do a lot if you stay focused on dual purpose in your spaces. Leave enough room for plants so it can obscure the edges of the garden. Go tall on perimeter plantings.

Thank you for the presentation of a stunning garden and design hints. Interesting that Lisa mentioned the loquat leaves can be used for tea - I was only aware that the fruit is edible. I'll be raiding my Mum's loquat tree for leaves next time I visit her. Prosanthera cuneata (and many other Prosanthera species) can also be used for tea or a mint substitute. A slight variation on the flavour compared to mints in the Lamiaceae family that most people are used to, but still makes a very refreshing minty drink.

I loved the issue of Garden Gate with this garden highlighted, so it was a real pleasure to hear of the owner/designers's thought processes. I'm in the process of creating a garden and have been struggling with a particular area. The big takeaway for me was the concept of the "heart of the garden". I realized that I just need this area I'm struggling with to reveal itself to me in time as this space is in fact the primary heat of the garden. Many thanks

Sherri, nice interview with lots of great follow up questions. Lisa, your reminders to think about focal points in the garden from the inside of the house were resonating with me. I try to think about that as well as using focal points for the outside flow of the spaces. I like your ratio of evergreen to deciduous, also. I live in New England so we need a lot of winter interest! I loved listening to your ideas, it is clear that you had two artist parents so your art medium of choice is plants. Another great point you made, that I need to remember, is unifying the spaces with long drifts or borders of one plant. It does, indeed, provide a respite for the eye. I truly enjoyed hearing about your beautiful garden, thank you. Do you have any suggestions for homeowners with a passion for garden design but a limited budget? I have 3 kids in college and can't afford a designer so I am often seeking professional advice on formats like this. Are there any resources you can recommend for do-it-yourselfers? Perhaps you have some favorite books or designers to follow. Thanks, Ellen (from Massachusetts)

    • @GardenGateMagazine

Seattle is Zone 8 & Zone 8b. We can grow a lot of plants here including some Genus of palms. I have Trachycarpas fortunei, Chinese Windmill palm and Butia capitata in my garden growing well. Trachycarpas wagnerianus also can grow well here. I think the palms do better when not in exposed in the wind, where their leaves can become tattered.
