    Kath is a delight and so is her garden. Her garden philosophy and practical approach to plants proves that you can have a beautiful garden without being a slave to it. Thank you for the tour.

    Two feral cats came to live in my garden and since their arrival squirrels, bunnies, moles, and ground squirrels are no longer a problem for me. The cats are a better deterant than the dog when she was with us.

    Thank you for garden tour, will never tire of these. Your property is beautiful, love the sitting area and fire pit, looking over the meadow....I can so relate with having to say goodbye to long time favorites and choosing less maintenance. I've been pondering that this year....I appreciate your honesty about still loving those plants, but can't do it anymore. Same with dog....we have also chosen not to get another pet....although our dogs were loved!

    I greatly enjoyed the tour of Kath's lovely garden. It is so helpful to hear and see the names of the varieties she chose to grace her garden. I live in zone 5b and so seeing the combinations and textures and hearing how they perform is beneficial. Thank you!

    Love your garden. Just wondering what lavender you have growing. I live in zone 4 also but can't find a lavender that will come back the following year.

    • @GardenGateMagazine

      We reached out to Kathy and here is her response, "That little hedge includes a mix of at least two English lavenders: Munstead and Hidcote.
      Most of the plants were started from seed many (25) years ago. Others were picked up over time from a local nursery that sells field-dug divisions.
      These are the hardiest lavenders available, but they are only winter hardy to zone 5. Since I garden in zone 4B, I sometimes lose a plant and need to replace it. Some of the plants are very old now, but they don't seem to mind being cut back quite severely. They are planted proud and on a slope as the soil here is quite heavy and we usually get a lot of precipitation.
      Depending on the amount of snow cover, there is always some die-back. Selective pruning to remove dead stems or sections of the plants that have died takes a good two hours each spring, but it's well worth that effort to have lavender in my garden!" Thanks for watching!

    What species of lavender winters well in Vermont? I live in N. KY and have not found a lavender that survives our winters. Thank you.

    • @GardenGateMagazine
      @GardenGateMagazine  2 роки тому

      Lavender is a Mediterranean native, so it thrives in drier, hotter climates. If you can provide a very loose, gravelly or sandy soil for your lavender, that might help keep roots drier going into wet, snowy winters. Also mulch with gravel to keep the foliage from getting moldy and staying wet in summer. You may have to resort to planting your lavender in containers, then moving them to a sheltered spot that doesn’t freeze hard over winter. Thanks for watching and commenting.
