My elderly friend developed shingles on her side and the nerve pain was very severe for months. She was treated with an oral medication and a topical cream. After witnessing her distress, I got the shingles vaccine. Thank you for clarifying so many aspects of the virus.

I had shingles in my early 40s a few years after having breast cancer. Woke up one morning to a quarter-sized patch of blisters on my forehead. Went to the doctor same day and he diagnosed me immediately with Shingles. Put me on meds and suggested I see the eye doctor to be safe. Later that night before the meds kicked in, I had severe pain up into my head and down into my ear. Thankfully I went to the doctor so quickly and was able to start the meds immediately. I am now almost 60 and received my Shingles Vaccine last year.

I had it many times on my face. In the last 10 years. So, even if I'm quite young, I decided to have the vaccine. It works 💪.

I'm 64 and just found out I have the shingles virus and it started out with the rash on my back, then the pain set in on my entire left side of my back and front left side as well. The emergency room prescribed me VALACYCLOVIR HYDROCHLORIDE 1g 3x daily for 10 days. I'm much better now but the entire left side of my skull hurts so bad. It's a piercing shooting pain that is unbearable and it leaves tears running down my face.

I got shingles at age 29 when I was going through infertility treatments. I wasn't able to take any medications or treatments to help for the pain or discomfort as they could interfere with the fertility meds and treatment. This was definitely an insane amount of stress, but my son will always be worth it.

I got my first outbreak in 1983. I was 23 yrs old. It appeared only on the right side on my forehead, palm of my hand and my knee. I got it at average 4-6 times a year. Stress seemed to be my trigger. I had the vaccine 3 years ago and I do still get it but only twice. Its mild by comparison to before vaccine and I only get it on my forehead now. My Dermatologist took tons of pictures and wrote a paper on Shingles to submit in a medical journal. Thank you Dr Ellis for ALL of your videos. You are very very appreciated!!❤❤

I had the vaccination shingrix and was sick the first time for 3-4 days (felt like I had the flu) the second shot, I had no issues. My husband was exact opposite, he was fine first shot, felt crummy second time. Glad we both got it, my dad had shingles and it is very painful.

Thank you, Dr. Ellis! This is such an important video. I got shingles when I was 71. I was on a work trip across country, and at first it felt like a headache, then a stabbing pain in my left eyebrow, then like an electrical shock in my eyebrow and forehead. I kept taking ibuprofen and tylenol, to no avail. Finally, on the day I was to fly back, I woke up with some blisters on my hairline on the left side, and pain all over my head. I have worked in public health and my husband is a doc, but I was away from home. By the time my plane landed in California, I was in terrible pain and just crying. I checked where the nearest Urgent Care was and had a taxi drop me off there. I walked in, said I think I have shingles, and the NP took one look at the rash that by then was down to my eyelid and on the side of my face to my temple. She had equipment to check inside my eye, and it was OK, but she recommended I follow up with an ophthalmologist.
Fortunately, I could pick up the Valtrex immediately and called a friend to pick me up to go home to bed. Over the next week, the blisters got worse, but did not migrate too much further. They were all over my head too. But, the pain and itching were awful. I could not stand to have water hit my head, I could only stand a little cool water. I asked my haircutter to give me a buzz cut, because my hair actually irritated the rash. I could not sleep at night. The pharmacist suggested benadryl cream on the rash, which did help a lot. I took benadryl during the day to try to stop the itching, which felt like ants under my skin. My neighbor introduced me to cannabis gummies, which helped with the sleep. The itching and redness lasted for almost a year. I still have a pink streak down the center of my forehead. I have a chickenpox scar between my eyebrows, so of course that would be the spot!!
That was in 2018, and at that time I looked everywhere on line on what to do for the pain and itching and there were NO videos. There was very little about shingles on the face, yet I have heard from friends that they or one of their relatives had it on the face and did not seek care for at least a week.
I was lucky that I guessed what it was, that I got help within 48 hours of the rash appearing. I also got the first shingles vaccine when I turned 65, but it is only about 40% effective. I think it made my case less severe. Since then I have received the Shingrex vaccine doses. I have told everyone I know to get vaccinated.

I've had both the doses of the vaccine and still got shingles a month ago. It only broke out in a cluster on my thumb but it was still shingles. I went to the ER because I thought I had MRSA or something because I had the shingles vaccine. So just know you can still get it even with the vaccine (prolly not as bad though).

The fact you can get the rash on the face and chronic pain was enough to convince my 70 yr old mom to get vaccinated. And the vaccine was so expensive so the US is lucky that you get it for free.

Thank you so much for this video. My mother had shingles, but because she didn’t immediately break out in a rash, was not diagnosed soon enough for the anti-virals to help. She now has had PHN for several years that has left her with constant pain and burning and has ruined her life. 😢

Thank you ! I have shingles now , I’m age 74. I had it before ina different place years ago . Before it was in my waist and this time it’s in my neck and shoulder . I saw my Dr today and she gave me Lyrica for pain and Valacyclovir to lessen the spread of the rash . Also she said I should still get the vaccine. It is very painful and I have had some sleepless nights , and all over body weakness. I’ll be so glad when this is over .

The first time I contracted shingles I was in my mid 30s and it was on my left jaw. I was so devastated since I'm a lotion and potion freak. I take care of my skin, always have. I can't remember if it was before of after, I had an operation to remove my left wisdom tooth, coincidence??? Unfortunately, I contracted it again I was in my early 50s on the exact same spot, my left jaw. But the second time, I saw a doctor very early to get the correct medication. I'm happy to report that I have no scars. I'm now 63, I did not get the vaccine, I'm hoping shingles will just move along without stopping on me again.

I had shingles in my late 20's. Had a weird rash that felt like a bad sunburn on my back/shoulder blade. Thought I had been bitten or stung by some bug. Only 30 odd years later am I realizing that is what it was. I was also "lucky" enough to have had chicken pox twice (as a kid with a very mild case and a much more severe case as a college kid). Yep, I have had the Shingrix vaccine. The 2nd one did make me feel bad but definitely could have been worse.

I have had shingles 3 times. First was Ramsey hunt syndrome at age 5. I had it at 25 and then again at 31. I don’t know exactly why it happened. I think the second time was stress induced. I am paranoid about shingles so I have been able to get the anti-viral meds right away. I was able the second and third time to avoid taking narcotics. I don’t remember much about being 5 but I do remember taking a liquid medication that tasted like white chocolate and to this day I cannot eat white chocolate. I did also have bells palsey but for some reason it cleared up by the time the shingles ran its course. I was only able to bear the pain the second 2 times with constant lidocaine application. The hardest parts for me is the extreme fatigue. I also have residual nerve damage that never resolved itself. I went on gabapentin for a different reason, but it treated my shingles pain. I had been miserable with nerve pain for 5 years until I got on gabapentin. I didn’t know I could live this way, pain free. Itch free.
The best bday present a person could get is the shingles shot.

I got shingles when I was 15. Getting shingles is actually what made my pediatrician test for dysfunction in my immune system because I also got strep throat 3-4 times a year and had multiple upper respiratory infections. It turns out I have two immunodeficiencies. I don’t know when I would have found out about those had it not been for the shingles.
I got the two Shingrix shots this last year. It was truly miserable. But I’d still take that over another bout of shingles.

Beware if your doctor does a swab and sends it for lab testing. Mine did and I found out later it was some kind of experimental test not covered by insurance. This was not my usual GP and the $400 I had to pay for that lab was an expensive mistake. My actual GP later told me that shingles is typically just a visual diagnosis and she wouldn’t have ordered that lab. I did get shingles several months after the shingrix vaccine. The pain and rash was GREATLY reduced. My rash didn’t even weep any fluid. Get that vaccine!

Thanks so much Doctor ; I am 65. And had chicken pox vaccine as a kid. Shingles appeared , very first behind my ear. Then two small spots in the head. While scalp was hurting. The nerve under the ear shingle went upwards towards the head. And was very painful. Like a toothache infection could be felt. But 4 days later it developed on right cheek and right side of neck. Luckily I started antiviral medication Valacyclovir 500mg tablets. It’s been 3 days now on this medication, seems like. They are not getting worse. But that nurse pain ending deep in to head is very painful, comes and goes. I have been taking antibiotics unnecessary I think. Cephalon 500 mg. Every 6 hours. Pain was the nerve affected by shingles. Not any other infection in the ear. Think I should stop antibiotics

Hi, thank you Dr.Eliis. I’ve never had the chickenpox but I did get the vaccine before it was approved by the FDA. I worked for a hospital and then I didn’t have immunity anymore after 10 months. My doctor strongly urges that I get the vaccine, I know I’ve possibly been exposed to it most likely, but I’m thinking about getting the vaccine.

I had it when I was 25 after a particularly rough month, diagnosed on my birthday of all days, ugh. They area it was in to this day feel off, like scratching it thru a thick blanket at times.

I did got the face paralysis at 33 years old. This form of Shingles is called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and is no joke, that's pretty scary to experience. It did takes 3 months to recover partially and an other 6 months for the rest to go away. I needed to sleep with my eyelid taped to keep it closed so my eye does not dry out. I could not eat properly and my hearing was damaged but recovered after a while. I was terrified to get stuck like that. Because it is possible to keep aftermath. Im lucky to have 95% recovered, only me can see it now. Recently I’ve got vaccinated for it (shingles vaccine)

Last week , i bathed with unclear water and had skin infection at the neck. I thought that it would be fungal infection. And thus I put antifungal cream on it . But I feel burning sensation from this and rashes become filled with fluid . At that time , I remembered that I had chickenpox at the age of 9 years old and these vesicles might be shingles . I went to the medical shop and asked about acyclovir cream but stocked out. So , I put on acyclovir 800 mg tds for 5 days at 4 days after onset of rash . So, I worry about late starting treatment and post herpetic neuralgia.

I had them a couple of years ago on my face! It was miserable. It began on my eyelid, so I had oral meds and eye drops to protect my eyeball. Thankfully my eye was fine. My doctor wrote me a script to get the vaccine early since I'm in my early 40s. My insurance still wouldn't cover it, so I paid out of pocket. Worth it. I never want to experience that again.

I was 18 the first time I got shingles. We (mother and I) had gone horseback riding for my birthday and a couple of days later I had the rash on my forehead. We thought it was a spider bite so didn't think much of it and didn't get it checked out until it turned black. Went to Dr's and he took one look at me he said it was shingles and why do I have it at 18? I still break out from time to time when my stress level is highly elevated for an extended amount of time. I have rashes as we speak, but this one is so different even from the first time getting it. It's the second time in six months I have had it and the pain this time is almost unbearable.

I remember having this constant aching, stabbing, and burning nerve pain on my back and not being able to sleep in one position for no more than an hour. Had to go to an urgent care the next morning to get started on some meds and it went away relatively quickly. 10/10 don't recommend

❤😂 I've been wrestling with shingles off and on for about 4 years definitely a lot of learning goes into dealing with it which now I've learned to do.. this is what I do now BHT powder in coconut oil a quarter of a teaspoon in about 2 tbsp of melted coconut oil it will dissolve take that about three times a day that dissolves the covering around the viruses so that they're destroyed it works really well there's other things too but I'm going to say this is the most effective😅

Had shingles at 34 years old. Pretty sure it was due to stress. It was across my chest & down one side. It was horrible - couldn’t bend over/down etc or my nerves would LIGHT UP! I thought my breast implants had exploded & silicone was throughout my chest which hurt like heck. Nope. Shingles. It lasted a long time. Did I mention it was horrible?? I couldn’t sleep - laying down hurt. Everything hurt. I’m now 41 & doctors still won’t let me get the vaccine - I’m not old enough😑 (Probably the last time I’ll ever say I’m not old enough for something!)

I feel like there's not much we can affect here. We cannot control what sex we are, what skin color we were born into, nor what year we were born. All we can really do here is sit around and hope we are one of the lucky ones who never get shingles. I got the Shingrix vaccine, since I had chicken pox as a child. I will be 60 in less than a month, and I have Hashimoto's Disease. I take thyroid meds, but those don't depress my immune system, thank the universe. Also I thank the great spirit that the gene that flipped Hashimoto's on wasn't triggered until perimenopause. I know women who have it who got it in PUBERTY or AFTER CHILDBIRTH. So we can't control Puberty or Menopause, but we can certainly chose not to have children. Again, thankful I never had kids or I might have been dealing with Hashimoto's for a lot freaking longer.

Then 3rd day I wake up with a rash on my left side/stomach area and on my back (where the sciatica area is) Now I guess I get to look forward to lovely blisters :( Do I cover them up? Do I put medicine on any of this? Dr cant see me till this is all over

Get on antiviral immediately, I am using clear calamine lotion Have been using ibuprofen to get some relief to sleep. I started supplementing L lysine, Zinc, VitD3, Mg, NAC & melatonin. Haven’t missed any work & can still do easy exercise. Rash is mostly gone already. Good luck!

I had decompression back surgery a few weeks ago and broke out with shingles a few days ago on my back but it is not close to my incision. I caught it early and it is only about the size of a quarter. Could this be related to the surgery? I had a similar outbreak about a year ago in almost the same place and same size.

Great topic, but you left out one of the most important points…if you think you have shingles, get to a doctor asap because Valtrex medication treatment works best if started in the first three days and that can make all the difference.

I got Shingles at 27. I was working out a lot and the pain in my spine was so bad that I thought I slipped a disc or something. I had a dime sized pink spot and the doctor diagnosed it immediately and put me on antiviral meds. Thankfully the rash never developed. But the pain toward my left side (ribs) was unimaginable. Advil did nothing. It was mental torment. I will get the vaccine when I turn 50.

My mom had shingles, she went to the doctor and was told that she'd have them for a couple of weeks. Well she went home got her oatmeal out of the pantry and filled her grinder with the oatmeal. Then she went to take an oatmeal bath, the next day her shingles were starting to dry up. She took two or three oatmeal baths a day and her shingles were gone in a little over a week. Her doctor was amazed at how fast she was getting rid of them and asked her what she was doing. And she told him.

I'm 59 and got the vaccine last year and didn't feel great after but let me tell you, I'm an RN and worked in the ED and shingles SUCKS!! Do yourself a favor and get the vaccines, I've seen many people with it and it can be horrifically painful and actually had a patient with post herpetic syndrome and that is something you don't want.

I got my first dose of shingles vaccine on Monday. I was sick in bed for 24 hours. Couldn’t move my arm. The next day I broke up in the most severe shingles rash I’ve ever had in my life. Currently still dealing with it and in severe pain. I thought the vaccine was going to help. I feel hopeless.

I had shingles in my late 50s probably due to extreme prolonged stress. It first appeared as zings on my lower back that I thought were big bites. It was up my spine from my waist, down my left sciatic nerve and around my waist on both sides with a sprinkling on my right torso. My PCP was astonished because I had no pain. I had excruciatingly insane itching which no doctor could explain. I recovered in a few weeks luckily. When I got the first shingles shot I developed the rash on my lower spine and waist on my back within 72 hours. I got pretty sick too. Doctors have dismissed my claim despite seeing it with their own eyes. The second shot 6 months later was fine. Not every case is the same. My mother’s friend lost vision in her one eye from shingles. My cousin and my SIL both had shingles when they were about 25.

I'm 43 and have a friend that is about 60 now that got the Shingles vaccine twice and got Shingles twice! Hearing that from her was disheartening to me but now hearing from you that getting the vaccine makes you 90% stronger against it makes me feel better. She was just very unlucky and probably genetically more susceptible to getting Shingles. My mom is 80 and my father passed away when he was in his 60s and both have not had Shingles. I'm hoping that once I'm 50 and get Shringrix that I won't get Shingles. Thank you so much for this video!! I'm such a big fan of you and your videos. :)

I have just been diagnosed with shingles and the symptoms started, I think last Thursday it’s been a roller coaster of a variety of symptoms, including neuralgia, and of course, the rash and pain . I just came back from the doctor, and I just started medication’s, which hopefully will reduce the length of time. I have it. As far as I know I have never had chickenpox in my life. I’m now 87. My daughter had chickenpox. My two grandchildren had chickenpox my 97 year-old mother caught chickenpox from my granddaughter even though she wasn’t any closer than 15 feet. I didn’t catch chickenpox at that time.I must’ve had chickenpox somewhere along the way but I had absolutely no knowledge of it. Well, now I’m here with very painful shingles.

I have had shingles 3 times before the age of 40! 😮 once in my 20s and twice in my 30s. My doctors believe being under tremendous stress was correlated to each outbreak and as we all know stress can wreck all kinds of havoc on us mentally, emotionally, and physically. So follow Dr. Ellis’ advice and also do whatever (in a healthy way) to keep your stress levels as low as they can possibly be. I hope this helps❣️

Dr. Sam, one thing I have always been curious about (as far as shingles goes), does exposure to chicken pox cause susceptible people to have a shingles outbreak? TY Cindy
P.S. I had shingles at 18 during my state final exams on the back of my right hip. My groin glands were so swollen, that I had to wear a pair of farmers overalls! It hurt SO bad.
I HAVE had the Shringrix vaccine.

Just got it recently. Thought I had a pulled lat/shoulder blade muscle. On my third night of restless, painful inability to sleep, I noticed the rashes. For me, the rash is on the outer side of my pectoral (chest) muscle as well as on my back/shoulder blade area. The rash is only on one side of body. I just took my first anti viral pill on day 3 and am hoping it does not get too severe. The pain at night is the worst. I feel like I cannot get comfortable; have throbbing pain that hits me in my shoulder blade area mostly; and thus prevents sleep. Ibuprofen may assist with some inflammation, but it does not seem to do much for the pain. It is unbearable and primarily towards my spine/shoulder blade. I might try lidocaine patches on the rashes to assist in relief of nerve pain. Loved your video. Thank you

I never had shingles but heard from a friend that it can affect vision. His mother lost much of her vision after shingles affected both eyes. She was able to see general shapes but was not able to read printed materials due to the damage to her eyes. This unfortunate impact for my friend's mother motivated me to get the first Shingrix shot, and I will definitely get the second after 2 months have passed since the first vaccination.

A PCP recently diagnosed me with Shingles which was a HUGE surprise to me because nobody I know ever had it. Also, I've never had chicken pox nor anybody in my family. I am now 42, no rash(common for shingles) but I suddenly suffered an excruciating pain, tenderness on my left lower hip area that lasted for weeks. I had fever but no rash at all. She prescribed me a medication for the pain and I had one shot of Shingrix. Idk if I got the correct diagnosis but it makes me so sad hearing about it 😢
