  • For anyone who has experienced shingles, or been around someone who has, you know this can be an incredibly painful condition. Symptoms include rash, hives, and nerve pain. Shingles are caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. This virus tends to hide, or almost hibernate, in nerve cells long after someone has recovered from chickenpox, and can re-emerge as shingles down the line. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss why supporting the immune system is so critical when it comes to preventing and treating shingles, and much more.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency, he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health - a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

You focussed on quoting the drug-like cocktail of supplements, you skipped the part where he said she still had another bout of shingles but he then included meditation, increased protein, sleep therapy, etc. When you use supplements as a drug/silver bullet, you will be disappointed. Those supplements have been around for 40+ years for candida treatment, etc., not new. Realize that you often will need individual testing before adding supplement treatments to act like drugs. His overall message is to get under doctoral care like at the Ultra Wellness Center. Be careful, peace and health.

The day before the shingles rash started, I woke up with the word "ashwagandha" repeating in my mind. It took me a few days to realize the rash was shingles. I then had a dream showing me killing the shingles virus (symbolized by a spider) with repeated stabs of vitamin C over 3 days. I took liposomal C 3 times a day for 3 days and the rash stopped progressing. I also took ashwagandha for several months afterwards.
Of course, just like the case study example in this video, I had underlying gut issues, including H-pylori, SIBO and candida overgrowth to address too.

I’m 30 now but I had shingles when I was 24. I lost a lot of family/friends growing up, had a lot of other traumas throughout school ages, and at the time of the shingles had just lost my best friend and a 1st cousin. At the same time, I was heavily in debt, just dropped out of college reluctantly, and just went through a rough break up. The shingles were painful enough to where I couldn’t even hardly wear a T-Shirt or sleep with a blanket.
Doctor told me I was the youngest person he’d seen with shingles and told me that it was due to stress.

Yes I agree it’s all down to stress, my life is been very stressful the last 9 years, I need to try and handle my stress levels so the neuralgia stays dormant but it’s not that easy when dealing with certain family members.

    • @johnm3435

@@susancolclough5138 I understand the family aspect well! I’m sorry that you’re having to have stress with family when they’re supposed to be a shoulder to lean on. I lost my dad when I was 7 and my own mom was such a cause of my stress since then that finally at 24/25 I realized that we just couldn’t communicate any longer or have a relationship (after opening up to her, trying to get her to seek therapy, etc).
It’s not my ideal life not having her in it, especially since she’s still alive, but my life is so much more stress free now after blocking her from my phone, email, socials, and just becoming as stoic as I can about the situation.
I hope things turn around for you! Healthy diet, exercise, proper hydration, and reducing stress levels goes a long way.
      Good luck! You got this!

What has helped immensely is a diet high in lysine and low in arginine..certain nuts are a dead ringer for me except macadamias and small amount of walnuts. I reactivated the zoster virus after my booster mrna vax. As I was aware of the fact that this was happening quite a bit with the covid vaccine I was keeping an eye out. I was already boosting with zinc,c,d,k2, NAC for covid (added L-lycine and melatonin after shingles diagnosis) I got my antivirals when the first three rash dots (front, side back) showed up. (Thank goodness I was looking out) The rash completed the band and started retreating 3 days after that. No blisters started. The whole thing finished in a week and I only have some nerve pain left now at day 7 after diagnosis. Combining functional medicine, Wim Hoff breathing and antivirals really knocked it sideways. I'm a 58-year-old white woman so really fit the profile :)

I think i have an odd form of shingles ---- in my eyes ----- i am 90 years old ------ with years of chronic and unnecessary STRESS.
Adrenalin for fright and flight ----- when one's voice prepares to scream for help ----- is dangerous ------ Adrenalin for fight lowers your voice and stops people from from telling you to calm down ------ instead of listening to you when exasperation raises your voice even higher.
Meditation ---- especially on the Passion of Christ ----- reduces anger completely ----- well, almost ---- as when an intractable situation that needs to be addressed is ignored for years ---- so that praying becomes difficult. For this we need TRUST and HOPE.
    Then miracles do happen.

Oh gosh, was that ever painful! Have been doing Keto for 2 1/2 years. I think that really helped with it only lasting a few days. I got my first "Shingrix" shot 4 days ago and I still feel crummy. First couple days (Thursday and Friday) I kind of wandered around and slept. Tired, joint pain, muscle pain in and out. I finally broke a sweat later on the second day and thought I was nearly done. Now the side effects are kind of moving around. The injection site was pretty sore for a few days. It feels better (but not all better).
    I really feel irritable/bitchy too.
In and out of feeling 'achy" all over. Stomach was bugging me, then lower back muscles, now it's deeper inside like maybe lower GI track.
This vaccine is much more demanding that I had expected. I wish the pharmacy would have warned of side effects. I would have chosen a different set of days because some co-workers are depending on me trying to finish and launch a project.
It's been a very taxing time since COVID took hold. I lost my contracting job, I got COVID-19 in early March 2019. I just thought I had a flu and wondered after learning more. I tested for antibodies about 5-6 months later and showed that I had COVID-19 antibodies. When the vaccines became available fo the general public, I kept looking around if any doctors would say "don't vaccine yet." After a year, I tested and still had the antibodies. So, I decided about a month later I would sign up. The first Moderna shot was pretty rough for a few days. And the second shot 4 weeks later was about half as bad. After a month, I signed up for Shingrix shot one, not knowing it would be so rough. I'm just wondering if all this is just a lot to put on the immune system in such a short space of time.
Ironically, I just learned there is a medical/scientific debate about giving the COVID-19 vaccine to people with antibodies still present. Maybe too much of a good thing.
Currently, I'm taking some ibuprofen for pain, and a couple nights took a benadryl to sleep.
Thanks for the insights. I'm doing most of the advice given. But I did not know about the Selenium supplement. I just thought that was for shampoo.

The web of the left thumb is the pressure point for the nerves in the right shoulder. But triggering that does not relax the area where the nerve is being triggered for pain. Good for other nerve entrapments in the right shoulder.

I have never had shingles but the skin on my left waist felt just hurt last month for a few days. Thought it was muscle or organs so was worried but it was just skin so sensitive and just hurt to even touch that area for a few days. Very uncomfortable but noticed blisters started to form on that area and very itchy. Didn’t know what it was and didn’t even bother to visit a dermatologist. I am thinking that it was shingle. The blisters are gone and healed now but it was so weird though. Do you think it was shingle? Can anyone reply?

This video has been really helpful, I started with the mushrooms tablets before Christmas and then I stopped so I need to get back on them as I can’t actually eat mushrooms 🍄.
I do think 🤔 it’s time now to meditate 🧘🏻‍♀️ and ask the question 🙋‍♀️ what do I need to do or let go of to release this neuralgia. I hope 🤞 you feel back soon Molly. Sending lots of love 💕 & hugs 🤗

I was wondering this as well. I had the sensitive skin but no rash and not the severe nerve pain. I had shingles a few years ago and this new pain was all post spinal adjustment recently. I now have deep muscular pain in the same area of my upper back. I thought my shingles came back but no rash or nerve pain.

No rash but the way they describe the shingles skin pain symptoms is what I experience. I didn't get a rash either of the two times I've experienced it. The skin pain eventually goes away -- like 3-4 wks -- so not terribly worried about it... just wanted to find a clear explanation as to WHY it happens.

I jammed my leg, started having symptoms of sciatica, the next thing neck pain then a shingles rash behind my ear and on my chin. I think jamming my leg activated the virus in my spinal cord.
