1. No ear training: Singers should train their ears to identify notes and intervals. 2. No daily warm-ups: Warming up your voice every day is necessary for good vocal health. 3. Singing with your speaking voice: Don't rely on your speaking voice for singing. You need to learn how to use your chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice. 4. No focus on shruti and tala: Shruti is the pitch of the notes and tala is the rhythm. Singers need to focus on both. 5. Not enough repetition: Repetition is key to improving your singing. 6. Singing random gamakas: Gamakas are ornaments used in Indian classical music. Singers need to learn how to use them correctly. 7. Poor posture: Good posture is important for singing. 8. Self-learning: While self-learning can be helpful, it is not enough. Singers also need feedback from a teacher. 9. No multia training: Multia training is the practice of singing in different ragas. This helps singers develop their control over all the notes. 10. Voice abuse: Singers need to be aware of how they use their voice throughout the day, not just when singing
I m a senior citizen. Retired at the age of 60. I love music n like singing. Now I m 66 n joined music class Dugan sangeet. I can sing in a group but don’t hv confidence singing alone. But I want to learn. Any suggestions pl.
Sir it's great to hear you have started your journey at this age, My suggestion is you can practice is the key, what you can do is you can sing song along with playing it on any device, must consider that volume of the song which is playing on your device is around 50% or as per your convenience, This helps to build your Confidence
Superb and very useful video ma'am. I usually miss ear training, repeated practice, daily warmups, singing random gamakas and multi raga training. Will focus on these definitely to become a good singer. Thanks again🎉
Madam We know we are doing some mistakes but when you counted the number reached 10. By Knowing our mistakes 50% done. Rectifying is important. With your help we can win. I've confidence on you.

This is one of the best lectures I have heard on how to learn music, and more importntly how to teach music, especially Carnatic music. Hats off, Pratibha Ji. As the husband of a lady music teacher, I could identify with every point you make in this superb list of mistakes that completely ruin music learning. Thanks. I have forwarded this to my wife , to let her know she can now say these things more authoritatively to her students (she says many of these, but no one listens!)
This video is a really good awareness for every singer. I am a seasoned singer and Carnatic teacher and I can relate to each of the 10 points mentioned here. Absolutely relevant and important for every singer and teacher. Very good video. 👏👏
Superb and very useful video ma'am. I usually miss ear training, repeated practice, daily warmups, singing random gamakas and multi raga training. Will focus on these definitely to become a good singer. Thanks again🎉
*Good one Ji. Thank You. I am 65 years old, Panchapakesan from Mumbai. I think I have a good voice. But have (had) great inclination for singing. When I learn a new song or a song not sung for very long, first, I sing it to myself so that I get the tune right and then I go to see the lyrics as second and finally meaning of the lyrics to give right emotion to it. These days I sing karaoke singing of film songs of Hindi and Tamil. I also feel knowing the lyrics by heart is also important* *Please comment on my approach* Thank You.🙏
Thank u so much, started learning at 60, long way to go, but this video has helped a lot, i dont even know till how much ill learn but definately ill practice not to do this mistake
I am 78. After a couple of months of self learning, I joined four months ago a studio to learn karaoke singing (one to one training). I don't know the fundamentals of singing/music that you have explained. Still I think I am making some progress, because my teacher is a kind and talented person. I have shared your video with him. Is it necessary for me to take other lessons in singing, such as those you offer? I will consult my teacher also. Thanks for your lucid explanation.
Thank you mam for the information I guilty on all 10 mistakes I’m singing since long time but I never noticed these mistakes I’ve learnt many things from you I’m from Pakistan God bless you abundantly you are doing a great job 🙏😇
Mam really sharing your experience in singing makes me push for and the guidance you gave that is really helpful for me and also mam you have told that to avoid the mistakes especially i usually make mistakes in these 10 by your guidance i am getting some idea about vocals thank you so so much mam god bless you 😊❤
Honest Amazing video on mistakes committed. Thank u. Does certain foods one consumes have an effect on one's voice. Hos about aging process....how does an elderly person prevent strain or develop a reasonably voice of quality. Many thanks😊
Yes definitely diet plays an important role in voice quality. Particularly acid reflux is very harmful to the voice so maintaining good gut health is a must. Yes aging does affect the voice in the natural flow, but aging of the voice can definitely be slowed with proper training and regular vocal exercise. The earlier you start, the better.
Hi, I don't agree with number 3. You can sing in your chest very high , if you know how to do it. It's all about technique. I can comfortably sing in chest up to C5. Then, and only then, I'll switch to mixed/head voice. I couldn't do it before, but now I can and my voice is super healthy even if I sing for 2 hours a day. It's all about vocal technique.
At what point we need to transition from chest voice to head voice differs from person to person. Some people can sing higher notes without much of a transition because their registers are well connected. But some people feel the break at a much lower point. The idea is to understand your voice type and its behaviour and shift accordingly.
Hello Ma'am, I dont know much on vocals as have been mostly playing an instrument, however recently i have started to learn some krithis for navarathri to sing, I am not able to understand this head voice, I thought voice must come from Nabhi /navel with proper compression of stomach. Also this breath control and knowing when to draw breath is also something i realised is something one needs to be more aware of, something like breathing exercises/pranayama helps
Ma'am I am guilty of 2 and 10 .. and sometimes 6 .. I am lucky that my teacher is very particular about feedback, correction and repetition .. so takes care of 4 and 8 😊
