I can't thank you enough. We came home tonight in our ford and found the alarm in my Bug going off in the garage couldn't make it stop. noticed the light flashing on one of the fobs and figured out that the panic button somehow was stuck on. Had to disconnect the Beetle battery ran in the house watched your video took out the battery on the sick fob hooked up the Beetle battery again and all was OK. I'll get that Fob checked tomorrow! Thanks again.
No problem! It may not be the key fob though. Volkswagen door sensors can fail after a while, causing the alarm to trigger. Mine would do that from time to time.
Thank you everyone for the compliments and support!!! Don't forget to like my video and subscribe to my channel. Also please follow me over on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Pinterest.
Thank you so much for this video tutorial. I purchased a used Passat and the key never worked. I was gonna take it to the dealer, but only God knows how much they would have charged me to do something so simple. 5 minutes of my time and $1, and I'm good to go. Once again, thank you. :-)
At $158 per hour of "labor", I would want that job. It's like they're obstetricians. Labor. Right. The last time I took my older VW to the dealership, there was a woman in the customer waiting area. The Service Advisor called her to tell her she needed to have a light bulb replaced on her car. The anticipated charge: $65.00.
Thank you for the video. I was having trouble with my remote fob, and I needed to read the FCC ID reference numbers, which is why I tuned to your video. Then, while I had the first part open, I decided to put in a fresh battery CR2032, which turned out to be missing from my battery "inventory". I'm one of those who doesn't like to wait until a battery operated device conks out before buying a battery for it. Anyway, while I looked, my VW fob sat without the battery inserted. When I reassembled the fob and tried it, it had corrected itself. Prior to that, it would not unlock the car. It would just lock it. Computerized gadgets are wonderful, but they can go bat$#÷+ for no apparent reason. At times like that, walking up to your car to put the key in the doorlock doesn't seem like such an inconvenience.
Thank you very much for the clear explanation. I did it at first time and you helped me a lot! It was clear how to separete the up and bottom part, but then I stopped and did not find any mark to split the half into two pieces (2nd separation). Then I found this video. At the side I used a mini crowbar (wider than a screwdriver appr. 10,5 mm wide) and it worked. Thumbs up! :)
For some time now the car was only locking with the fob but I had to manually unlock, so I decided to replace the battery and now the unlock button works! Thanks!
Thank you! My 2009 Scirocco 2.0 TDI would not unlock. Thought I would change the battery in key fob. Followed another video for '2009 onwards Scirocco' only to find the key fob was different. My key fob matches the fob in this video. Knowing I had the same key gave me the confidence to apply more pressure to open up. All sorted in a couple of minutes and tested out OK. I have had my Scirocco for 14 years and 136,000 miles now and have not had to change the battery before. Think I should complain to VW 🤣.
Thank you for the video. I just put the key fob through the laundry. Duh! Didn't dig deep enough into the coat pockets. A little moisture in the battery compartment. Dried it out with Q-Tip and snapped it all back together. Still works.
As for your seized door lock... Sometimes you can get a good quality penetrating oil which will unseize the lock. But if it's too bad, it'll need to be replaced. Friend of mine ordered a new lock assembly for his and I believe it was about $100 from the dealer. Now for reprogramming your key fob, you will need a working lock. You can use the lock on your hatch or if they're both seized, you can in behind the lock and push the micro switch manually.
Thanks for the video. My 3rd party remote key wasn't being recognised by my car so it wouldn't start. Watched the video and replaced the battery and it works fine. Cheers!
@scottgitech Thank you for the comment! It's just a small chip that slides into a slot in the plastic casing. I believe you can just pop it out and transfer it to the new casing.
If you have another key programmed to the car, you can reprogram it yourself. Here are the instructions w w w .myturbodiesel.c o m/1000q/a4/vw-smart-key-remote-replacement. h t m (removed spaces)
@dntcd The spring should clip in the button mark of the key. There is a tab which sticks past the outside diameter of the spring(shown at the pics in the end of the video), that part goes into the plastic casing.
The sprung action of my flip key got weaker & weaker over time, often failing to hold in the closed position. So being shown how to dismantle the key fob and add spring tension was really useful. But my key had other problems. The three small arms on the opening button were sticking in the guide holes, stopping it popping out fully. Some sandpapering and cleaning up old gunge was required, along with three twists on the spring. Now working like new, so a big thanks for your inspiring video.
@brightbr I believe you can buy just the buttons on Ebay. You would have to remove the circuit board itself by cutting away the little plastic nubs in the corner holes on the circuit it. After you would have to glue the circuit board back in.
hey, I just tried, and yes, you CAN remove the little electronic board without cutting the plastic. Just pry it a very little bit and it comes off easily, just like that. Then, push it back in.. Thanks for the video.
Glad to help out :) As for the immobilizer, it should just pop out. It just sits inside that little slot, so you might need a small screwdriver to give it a nudge to come lose.
Thanks for posting this video. I sought it out and watched it and then tried without tools to open it and it popped right open. No tools required for just battery replacement. You might try to edit the video with that caption early on to prevent people from damaging their key fob.
You can swap the parts directly over with no problems at all... The worst case scenario would be you having to reprogram the fob, which can be done yourself. Just make sure that one of your door key locks do work and aren't seized. But this only applies if your vehicle forgets the coat for that key fob. You most likely won't have any issues though.
lol I ended up just using my hand strength to open the case to replace the battery. Once you see the back of the battery its a quick pluck and replace, and snap all back together. Thanks for the video!
I had a 2013 and well, she went back to VW cause she was a TDI. Luckily I found a 2005 VW Jetta TDI. Unfortunately the key fobs are COMPLETELY different. I guess the battery completely died after 242k miles Thank you for this video. :)
@tigre909 Sorry for the late reply... You might be able to pull it apart and dry the components out in the inside. Some of the electronic might have also shorted out in the inside, so it'll be too hard to repair. I would think you should be able to purchase one of those ebay fobs, swap your key over, and reprogram it according to your car. Although I'm not 100% sure if this would work with reprogramming the new fob though.
@laronwilliams16 You would have the cut out the small plastic pieces which work like rivets at the corners of the circuit board. Then you would probably have to glue it into the new fob case.
If it opens up the same way, then I would assume it's the same, but I'm not 100% sure though. I know there is a few different variations of this fob that look identical, but they are held together differently.
Great video! Glad I watched it as I thought that it was to be split in half like all other fobs and not pulled apart ( German cars always have to be different 😂) Thanks my man, saved me from breaking it! You rock!! ✌🏻
Great video and instructions. Thanks. I had known how to replace the battery for a long time but not the actual key part. that part of my fob had been damaged and I didn't want to completely destroy it so I never pryed too hard. I never would have known there was a screw behind the emblem. Thanks!
The key fob itself might need to be reset. In section 3-1, page 29 of my owner's manual there is a paragraph about resetting the key. To reset the code, Press button A or button C one time for one second. The vehicle remains locked. The control unit recognizes only one key code via the master key. Lock or unlock the vehicle with the master key. The resetting procedure is now complete. A is the bottom button to unlock and C is the top to lock.
Great video!! Thanks for doing it. FWIW...I had trouble with the immobilizer kicking in (i.e. shutting down the engine) even though I moved the RFID chip to my new FOB. I don't know if it was coincidence but in the end I made sure the cleaner enough of the RFID chip (the one that was more clear) was the closest to the dash (via how I arranged it in the case) and suddenly I had no more problems.
Your key needs to be reprogrammed into the car. It is possible that the key you disassemble wasn't the car's original key, therefore it has a different code. Once you replace the battery, it resets the fob therefore you have to reprogram the key. I love how the manual says "take it to a dealer to replace the battery". Thanks for this!
Lol, yep they want to avoid owners doing it themselves. Happy I could help!

"you wanna make sure it's turned counterclockwise when you put the spring back on"... YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR THANK YOU
Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback!
Very clear and well explained! I had completely no idea how to open it. Thanks for your step-by-step advice!

Thank you so much. This really helped me out as my partner works on the other side off the world. Kind regards from Scotland UK

Thank you for the feedback and tips!
It's just a sliding fit in the case. You should be able to slide in a small flat screw driver along side it and pop it out.
As for your seized door lock... Sometimes you can get a good quality penetrating oil which will unseize the lock. But if it's too bad, it'll need to be replaced. Thanks for the tutorial! Battery hereby changed. 🙂
And a thanks to UA-cam, for providing this platform for EVERYTHING!
Happy to help!
Now those are exactly the tips I need to know to when taking it apart and putting it back together! Thank you so much for making this task smooth.
Thank you for the feedback and kind words :)
Thanks for the video. My 3rd party remote key wasn't being recognised by my car so it wouldn't start. Watched the video and replaced the battery and it works fine. Cheers!

You have to swap the demobilize chip from the old fob to the new fob. The only way to disable it as far as I know is through VAGCOM.
Simple language.... great technique!!! That's really very good.
Saved me money.
Wish you all the very best!!!!
Thank you so much!
Was able to change my own battery! Thank you so much! Save my freezing hands in winter fumbling with the keyhole 🙌🏻
Why has everything gotten so complicated! Move the emblem, etc. etc. etc. It used to be so simple. Those days are gone.
But thank you sir
thank you for being thorough all the way through the entire process.
+FnlPrblm Thank you for your compliment.
Once again... Years later... Thank you.

Nope, if you're only replacing the battery, you only need the first part. The second part is if your removing the immobilizer or key.

Glad it helped!
Great video, I like the way you did the slideshow of photos at the end showing the parts more clearly.
Just successfully changed my battery after watching. Thanks!
Thank you for this Video. Made my day. Just replaced my battery without a problem. Thanks.
Thank you, your video saved me from damaging the key fob
Excellent. Manual showed nothing, this saved me all sorts of experimental levering and prising and probably causing damage. Thanks!!
Glad to help out and thank you for the feedback :)
perfect tutorial! This helped me greatly in transferring all the internal guts to the new case.
Excellent to hear and thank you!
How did you get the rfid out?
@laronwilliams16 You would have the cut out the small plastic pieces which work like rivets at the corners of the circuit board. Then you would probably have to glue it into the new fob case.
Dude, I followed your directions, read all the comments.....locks worked.....car started....then shut down. It deprogrammed my car!
If it opens up the same way, then I would assume it's the same, but I'm not 100% sure though. I know there is a few different variations of this fob that look identical, but they are held together differently.
Yea. Mine looks very similar but that central seam doesn’t follow al the way around. It’s definitely only half way (the back non button side)
Thank you, a real saviour of time and money!
Glad to help out :)

My fob was acting up
Now fixed due to this video
Awesome to hear and thank you!
Excellent! just bought a 2003 golf and the key is a bit past its best. great tutorial will refer back for sure.
Congrats on the purchase and don't forget to subscribe :)
Thanks dude. This helped me swap out my battery.
No problem!
Thanks! It was very useful, changed the battery without doing any damage :D
Happy to help :)
Thank's, my key broke and I was able to fix it with this! saved me 40$
I'll always be adding new car videos... Some generic which applies to most car manufacturers, others model specific. Thank you :)
Thanks very much just saved me £50 at the dealers !!!! Subbed
Awesome to hear and thank you for the support :)
Excellent. Now I have a new battery in place and all is functioning again.
The key fob itself might need to be reset. In section 3-1, page 29 of my owner's manual there is a paragraph about resetting the key. Thanks a lot mate, just got a quote from VW but I thought I'd check here first! Perfect!
290 idiots gave a thumbs down. Are they not capable of following this well explained video?
There are probably 290 commission paid VW service managers who saw this video.
I needed to change the battery in my VW T5 keys, so this is just what I needed to know, thanK you.
Good vid! VW wants the owner to bring the fob into the dealership for a battery swap, which is a joke.
Thank you!
It may or may not work depending on the year of your MKIV. If the car doesn't recognize the key, it will start and then shut down right away.
Unfortunately I haven't worked with the previous model key fob... Your best bet would be to go on a VW forum such as VWVortex and make a thread there and see if anyone responds.
Cheers bro, you just saved me AUD$21 :)
Glad I could help!
Best trick I have ever found
Thank you!
Very clear and nice voice :) Thank you very much, helped me a lot :)
Thank you and excellent to hear!
Great job, straight to the point. Helped a bunch. Thanks!!
No problem and thank you for the feedback!
You're a genius my friend. Thank you very much ......
Glad to help out and thank you :)
I actually sold the car about a year ago. Unfortunately I will no longer have videos on a VW MKIV unless I buy another one or work on a friend's car.
Thankyou very much. That was a very good explanation.
You are welcome!
Thank you. Just done it today myself. Thanks alot again
thank you, saved a lot of time...
Happy I could help!
@ jkjerome1 Excellent tip, thank you for sharing!
Thank you!! Was worried about braking my key cos of being too heavy handed, so your vid really gave me confidence to get on and do it! :)
Super helpful! Thanks for taking the time to make this video!!
No problem, happy I could help!
Very helpful video. Works perfectly now. Thank you.
Awesome to hear and glad to help out!
Thank u. Cheers from Denmark 🍻
No problem, happy I could help!
Just cut away the little plastic rivet pieces in the corners with a knife or very small drill bit... Then glue in the board in the new case.
The info you gave was good, but I feel like I've just seen the first act of a play. I was hopeful you'd also show me how to re-assemble. I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I find UA-cam videos helpful for step by step walk throughs.
I was able to replace my battery so thank you very much!!
Awesome to hear and thank you for the feedback. Don't forget to subscribe!
Thanks for the vid!! it really helped out!!! Replaced demobilizer chip and original key works perfectly thanks again!!!
Worked like a charm. 'Thanks' for the help!
